Ben decided I had been good 😊 . So we went for some lunch at @thekingsheadinn this afternoon. Ben got an amazing looking Peri Peri Chicken Pizza (photo not included as it was inhaled 😅). I had a kids fish and chips. It was a brilliant size for my little VSG tummy, and I had a bit left over. I have brought a goodie bag home with the fish in so I can enjoy it later. The food is always good quality and locally sourced. It's nice to just get out the house for a little bit. This is also the 1st time I've tried fish and chips in almost 3 months! Today's main feeds . So today I went with some bigger meals. I devoured the salmon but ended up leaving some of the kieve and broccoli. Last night's Tea 😊 . After having a reaction to eating some butter icing from the cakes I made (less than a tsp for anyone wondering), we made a Stir Fry for Tea. Caroline + butter icing = bad 🤢 . So, I made cupcakes (last picture). After the jam incident in the 1st few weeks after surgery I've been really careful not to overdo my sugar intake. But as we are now heading into Week 9 post Op, I thought I'd try some of the butter icing I made. For research purposes 🤣 it did not agree with me at all! Que the 1st picture. I felt sick, dizzy and a little light headed. This was at around 2pm today. Ben made sure I got upstairs OK and had fluids. The dog even came to check on me as he was really concerned. I fell asleep around 3pm and woke up about 6pm. I feel so much better now. But I will be avoiding high sugars going forward. I'd like to say this was the 1st time this has happened. But if we include the jam, and another incident at the weekend (again involving butter icing) I am now at 3. I think I have finally learnt my lesson now 😕 . What a difference a month makes! . Well, 3 weeks 😅. I sat yesterday looking at how much smaller my knees were. Couldn't believe it! I wanted to see the difference but then remembered I had taken a photo of my pyjama bottoms for my best mate to see. Que comparison picture 😊 I wish I had one from before surgery, but this will more than do to see what is happening to my body right now. I know this isnt the end result but it is so encouraging to see. I have seen a great increase in the amount I can do now compared to before surgery. My arthritis doesn't hurt as much as it did before, and I am able to stand/walk a lot longer and further than I have been able to in the last few years! This is massive for me! Let's try a sandwich today 😋 . ●Tuna with light mayo and cheese. Very mushy so I can digest it better. ●50/50 bread with a little Clover Light. . I was able to eat half a sandwich before I had to stop. I know it's the bread that is filling me. I didn't even use all the tuna mix I made. There is half left in the fridge for later if I want it. The individual cans are great but I can only manage half at a time. I will think of something to do with the rest later. The dog was very much wanting the other half of my sandwich but he was denied. Let's talk about nails 💅 . So I take great pride in my nails. I take care of them and love the length that they currently are, as they are practical for me. But here is the problem... see my little finger, the white spots all over my nails? Well, that's the trauma from surgery showing in their growth. But what does that mean? Well, my nails are very thin at the moment and very prone to breakage, shown in the fact the nail on my little finger has lost its length. The white spots are the lack of vitamins and minerals I had for the first few weeks after surgery (I was making sure I was taking my vitamins and minerals as well as ensuring I had what I needed when I was eating but this is still the result). I knew this was going to happen. This is a common side effect after gastric surgery. I have yet to experience one of the other main side effects. The loss of clumps of my hair. What I ate yesterday... . ●Plenty of fluids. My trusty Hydrate M8 bottle means I can keep track of this. I have between 1.5 and 2L a day. I also had a glass of fresh orange juice (not pictured). ●Breakfast - Muller Light Strawberry Yoghurt. I can now finish the pot. Something I couldn't do a few weeks ago. ●Lunch - Scrambled Eggs with mustard for taste and a bit of cheese. I do love my scrambled eggs, that and omelets are my favorite kinds of eggs. ●Tea - Fresh Salmon with Broccoli and Potato Salad. Honestly enjoyed this so much! I do love Salmon, but it is a treat as it can be expensive to have all the time. ●Snacks - the ever trusty Babybels are a staple on my snack game now. I had 2 of these throughout the day. I also had 4 chocolate buttons in the afternoon and a small brownie after my tea. I scrub up well 😅 . Taken on Saturday before we went to people watch in Whitby. It's good to get our the house. . So, I'm not feeling up to making a video today. I'm OK. I just feel a little more tired than usual. I am still in shock from my weight check a week ago. I knew it would be dramatic, but I didn't expect that dramatic 🤣 I am absolutely stunned and extatic at the same time at the progress so far. My next weight check is at the 6 month mark. I will be avoiding scales until then! . I have been given the all-clear to go to the gym to do light work. I do have issues with 3 areas of my body specifically that I carry a lot of my weight. My thighs, my stomach, and my bum. So I will be trying to focus on them, as well as increasing my stamina over the next few weeks so that I am ready to go back to work and cause mayhem! 😜 We have a gym right across the road that is 24 hours, so I can go whenever I want (or when it's quiet), which suits me very well. And I know my parents, specifically my mother, will be making sure I am swimming again. All this will hopefully help reduce the amount of loose skin I have as I loose weight rapidly. We met up with my best friend and another friend and had something to eat and drink (I enjoyed another peppermint tea) while we people watched at all the lovely Goth people in Whitby. Weight Check 6 Weeks Out 🥳 . So, while I pick myself off the floor, as it hasn't quite sunk in yet. This is what I have lost in 6 weeks. I am beyond pleased, and so are the team. A few things we have agreed on: 1. I will be going back to the soft solids and mush phase as my stomach isn't quite ready for solids yet. 2. My internal bruising means no driving for another 2 weeks. New Nightly Routine 🌙 . I noticed my wound sites are getting a little dry. So during the day I have been putting vaseline on them. Before surgery, I was also suggested Bio-Oil to help reduce scaring. I'm not too bothered about scars, but with how dry the wounds have been, the oil seems to be helping overnight. So, in addition to the nightly washing my face with soap and cleansing, I am now applying Bio-Oil to my wounds to sink in while I'm sleeping. I have seen a difference already in the 1st 3 nights. When you just need a little extra... . So I feel like I am getting protein but not enough. So we got these. It has taken me 3 days to finish one. They are very filling and my poor little new tummy can't handle more. They don't taste too bad, although you can tell there is no added sugar to them. Taking a trip down memory lane. . Got a timehop on my Facebook account tonight to a picture I had forgotten about (left). This was when I was at Uni. The picture on the right is from me at a friend's wedding in 2022. I am so glad I decided to go through with my Gastric Sleeve Surgery when I look at these pictures. What I typically eat in a day... . •Breakfast - Muller Yoghurt (usually Berry flavoured) •2nd Breakfast - Scrambled Eggs. 1x egg, splash of milk, 1/2 tsp mustard for flavour, grated cheese. •Plenty of fluid. I like apple and blackcurrent from Tescos. Bottle is 900ml, so I aim to drink 1.5 of these a day. •Lunch - 1/2 mug of soup. The smoother the better. This one is chicken and mushroom. •2nd Lunch - the rest of my soup. •Tea - pre made puree. I currently have a few ice cube trays with my lasagne mince and vegetable mix left to use before I make my next batch (see previous post for what's in it). I can manage 3 or 4 cubes depending on how hungry I am now. •Before Bed - I try to drink either fresh orange juice or milk. Not much, as I don't want it to sit on my stomach while I am sleeping. . I'm not really snacking in between meals. Anything I don't eat either goes in the Bin or the dog gets, depending if it is safe for him to eat. My stomach can hold between 200-400ml since my surgery so I have to be careful to not over do it. You can still enjoy a meal out ❤️ . It's sisters birthday on Sunday, so we decided to go out for a meal tonight (as we always do for family birthdays). While everyone else was able to enjoy a starter, I stuck with just a main dish. Tonights offering was salmon. This is a great meal as it has the proteins that will help with my healing, as well as essential nutrients that my body needs right now. It's also quite soft and easy to eat right now. The staff at Virgos are amazing, and kindly put the sauce on the side for me in case I couldn't manage it. I ate about half and left with a goodie bag for tomorrow. So I could eat more than I though... . This isn't to say that I did. I made sure I was having what I needed, along with my daily Multivitimins. Usually pre opp, patients can be put on this diet for 1-4 weeks depending on their surgeons requests. I only had to do 1 week. But I won't lie, I did feel quite irritable and headachy 4 days in. But needs must. I'm not sure how much I lost on the diet as I avoid scales where I can. My weight checks are done at appointments only. My portion compared to Ben's 😅 . So we made Cornedbeef Mash for lunch. There's loads left over, so I have a few days meals for me or another helping for Ben. I didn't finish my portion as the potato was quite filling, but it was really nice to have something familiar and comforting. . Easter Dinner. I didn't eat a lot. . So in my family, we do Easter Dinner like we do Christmas Dinner. It's rather a lot of food but leftovers gets made into a soup and eaten for a few days after. . I was given my nephews pirate bowl to use and tried a few soft options. Mashed potato, turnip, cabbage, bread sauce, a tiny bit of stuffing and 1/3 of a very soft sausage. Picture 2 shows how little I actually managed but I did eat my protein and some vegetables. If in doubt, protein 1st. This is what helps with the healing process, so it's rather important and the 1st thing I try to eat. I will be taking some home to blitz in the blender and and to my ice cube meal collection. . Food pep for my pure 👍🏻 . 2 nights ago I made Lasagne for Ben for his tea. I do make a mean Lasagne, if I do say so myself, but here's the controversial thing. I don't actually like it. The combination of pasta and mince feels wrong to me and I really can't stand the texture. But Ben likes it so I make it as a treat for him sometimes. Propper comfort food. . I kept some mince back and added it to my blender with some Stir Fry vedgetables I had in the freezer. It was still a bit too solid after it was blitzed so I added some crea cheese (added dairy and protein) to make the puree a little more runny. The fun part is putting the mix into the ice cub trays. Once they are frozen, I just pop 2 into a ramekin dish and put in the microwave, 30 seconds at a time, until defrosted. This 1 meal of Ben's will last me around a week. . The other day we went for a drive to Saltburn. . So to get me out the house a bit more, we have been going for random drives out in the local area. The other day we took a drive to the beach. I ate too much 😫 . I also shouldnt have eaten the mushrooms! So we went for a drive and had breakfast out for a change. Got a Full English for Ben (picture not included) and I got his scrambled eggs and mushrooms. Sharing is caring. Won't lie... I ate too much and had to sit for 20min while my body digested. I had a little bit of reflux, but it was not bad enough to be sick. I had stopped and put my fork down earlier but went back for a little more scrambled egg. My eyes were definatly bigger than my belly. This was my mistake, but I'm still learning and it will take some getting used to. I was able to eat the mushrooms as they were very soft and I could chew them quite a bit. I wasn't sure if I could, but after having one I was OK. Both the mushrooms and scrambled eggs were amazing. Mince and Vegetable Puree . Not the most appealing to look at, but at this stage I really don't mind what the appearance is as long as I am getting the nutrition I need from it. This is my reality. 2tsps of this is pretty much all I could manage 2 weeks ago when I was straight out of surgery. Little and often is the way forward. Gone are the days of feeling hungry. Instead, it is replaced by a new sensation that I can't quite explain yet (as I don't quite fully understand it myself). Back in bandages 😕 . Stitches have been removed today. Its been 11 days since surgery now. 3 are healing quite nicely, but the one on my left is being a troublemaker. I will save the pictures of the wound sites and not show them, but needless to say, the left one is not the greatest. This is the one I ended up at the hospital again for, so I'm not surprised. But on a positive note, stitches have now been removed and they can hopefully heal nicely with little to no scaring. Nurses said they were a little red so have put some anti septic on under my bandages and told me to keep them covered as long as I can. We have a wound check booked in for a weeks time. I'm just glad they are out. My @hydratem8 bottle really has been a lifesaver after surgery. One of the most important things is to keep hydrated at all times, but because I can't gulp down fluid as I used to I have to be very careful. Hospital Log Day 3...Freedom Day Part 2 . FREEDOM!!!!🥳🥳🥳🥳 Biscuits for the staff. Because they are all amazing at what they do. One back for days, one for nights. My liberator arrived to release me back into the wild at 14:00, but apprantly it takes over 2hrs to stick a name label on meds. Oh well, we had fun wheeling me down to discharge. They offered me a sandwich. I really wanted a tuna one but not allowed 😓 when my meds arrived it was like I had gone shopping and raided the chemists. Then I was free! Hospital Log Day 3...Freedom Day Part 1 . Saturday, I was released back into the wild! But not before I caused more mayhem 😅 Decided to have a nose bleed very early in the morning because my blood pressure was so damn high! Sat at the nurses' station with what seemed like all of the toilet roll. Went for several walks up and down the ward throughout the night to help with trapped wind. Even asked if one of the other ladies would like to join me. She declined 😔 Was able to have some food officially! Catering gave me very mushy Weetabix, which we later found out I shouldn't have had...oops haha. Had a lovely wet wipe clean, felt better and braided my hair. Felt more me! Lunch was Straweberry Yoghurt and Vanilla Ice Cream. I made Strawberry Ice Cream. Got ready for freedom by sorting my bags. Went for a few more walks up and down the ward. Hospital Log Day 2... . Slept aweful. Not just because of the pain and discomfort, but also because my bed kept alarming every 20min keeping me awake. Went for a walk around the ward at 5am. Really bad trapped wind. The burping was unreal! Poor nurses tried until early morning to get my bed sorted. Turns out the CPR plugs were slightly loose and needed re plugging, as well as the unit at the end of my bed being faulty. So I was deflating and experiencing technical difficulties. Finally passed out. Woke up with drool down my cheek. Still only allowed water. Physio came to see me. Poor bloke. Didn't need him as I'd been moving around all night and going for walks. We took a trip upstairs and back down again so we could say we had done something 🤣 Bariatric Nurse came to see me, she was really pleased with my progress. Told me I could go home Saturday! 🥳 Gave me the extra special treat of being able to eat a yoghurt 12hrs ahead of schedule as I was doing so well. I waited all day for that yoghurt! It was worth it!!! Had visits from mam and Ben. No sick and actual conversations because I wasn't spaced out from anaesthetic anymore. Managed to have a bit of a clean but no shower due to bandages. Hospital Log Day 1 . Woke up from anesthetic. Looked like hell. Didn't care. Needed the loo. They tried to get me to use a bed pan! ABSOLUTLY NOT! Still half drunk from knock out drugs, I managed to drag my ass off the bed (with help from my mother and a nurse) and walk myself to the toilet. I remember getting dizzy half way there and almost face planting the floor. Not good 🤦♀️ but I used a wall to steady myself and continued on my mission to pee. I was in and out of consciousness most of the afternoon/evening. Ben came to see me at 16:00. I needed to pee again. Mission 2 commenced. It wasn't pretty but I did it! Got back into bed. Was given liquid paracetamol. Threw it up 20min later. Ben lovingly told me it was OK and that it was better out than in. Felt so much better after being sick and decided to wear my spare sick bowl as a hat 😅 Ben left for the night and I nattered with the ladies on the ward. Held a mutiny. Lady was given coffee instead of tea and I wanted squash. Managed to get some flavour in my water and it tasted amazing. Lady got her tea and we were all happy again. Didn't sleep much as I was super uncomfortable, but eventually passed out and slept a little. Not pretty, no filters. But this was me coming round from the anesthetic and being hit with the pain and discomfort from surgery. . My stats dropped below 85%, so I was on Oxygen for the rest of the afternoon/evening. I'm not 100% sure how long surgery took, but I was on the ward at around 14:30ish and I was the 1st surgery on the list for the day. When the surgeon came to seem me after he did say there had been some trouble getting around my abdominal wall. He had to use longer probes to get around, which has caused more bruising internally of my other organs. I can feel this everytime I move. Even when I breath. An oxygen tube was put into my lungs to help me breath through surgery and there is a bit of discomfort there as well. Considering what my body has been through I am honestly suprised I don't feel a lot worse than I do. But I'm here, the worst part is over and now the hardest part begins. Now I must learn to eat again and slowly recover. ALL DONE - 14/3/24 . Apologies for keeping the date to myself but I wanted to make sure it 100% went ahead. I was in hospital 3 days and came home last night. I am alright. Very sore and very tired. So far no sickness and I'm drinking as much as I can. Surgery went really well. A propper update will follow in the next couple of days and I will share what hospital life was like. Contemplating the choices I have made. . It's normal to second guess yourself, I know I had made the right decision to have Gastric Sleeve Surgery when I took a really good look at myself in the mirror and realised it wasn't good for me, or fair for those around me I love to carry on as I had been.
