Want Poppies? Time to start sowing. All the seeds of the true poppy species we sell at Marders (but not California poppies — those aren’t real poppies) need cold stratification to germinate. So it’s time to sow them NOW. Pick a spot in full sun w/ good drainage & weed/rake the soil until it’s a level, clean, bare spot. These seeds are going to sit on the surface of the soil so you’ll need to rake the surface to create a texture that’ll prevent seed from being washed away by rain, but not make it too deep as poppy need light to germinate. Poppy seeds are ridiculously minuscule — be extra careful when sowing or you’ll end up with clumps. Some folks mix the seeds with sand to give them more volume when they toss. I pour mine into a ramekin & sow by pinching a few between with my thumb & forefinger in tiny amounts (as if I was adding a spice to a recipe) then sprinkle them. I start in December, sowing in batches, until a month before our last frost (normally around Mother’s Day) — any later & I’ll have to refrigerate them first. It’ll take a while for seedlings to emerge but luckily, the blue tinge of their foliage helps determine what’s a poppy seeding & what’s a weed. You may need to thin (although with my method I don’t) to allow each plant room to grow. Poppies resent being transplanted but I’ve gotten away with it by digging up a big chunk of dirt while they’re still fairly young & they didn’t seem to notice. These poppies are popping! . I was super lucky to have a special garden helper visit me back in May. . This kiddo has spent many days in the garden with me in the past and I sure do miss her help harvesting ground cherries. . When we were lucky enough to have @rolling.home.adventures visit us in May, we of course had to take them to visit @froghollowfarmww . . While we were there my gardening partner picked out these poppy seeds. . I love poppies but have struggled in the past to get them to start from seed. I loved this seed selection that my garden partner picked out but to be honest, I was worried if I was going to get them to grow. . After their visit was over and they headed East, I kept watching these seeds, eager to send updates to my garden helper. . It's poppy season, and I am more excited about this flower every year. The only ones left to bloom are the gigantic breadseed poppies! . My biggest piece of advice for growing poppies is to plant them in the fall and keep cutting them to keep them in bloom for more than just a week or two! Poppies, fabulous poppies. One of our favorite flowers for design work. These Icelandic poppies (Papaver nudicale) are our favorite of the poppies to grow. A few of the varieties we like are ‘champagne bubbles’, ‘pastel meadows (floret), and Colibri or Hummingbird types. We usually plant two rounds- one fall planted and one late winter planted. They look fragile but actually hold up quite well. We typically harvest them in cracked bud stage, dry store them in bags in the cooler and then hydrate them and use them as needed. #growingpoppies #growingicelandicpoppies

What’s this? Thousands upon thousands of poppy seeds sprinkling around the garden on a cold and overcast day ☁️ These tiny seeds have been hanging out in the fridge over winter to make sure their cold stratification has been successful (sometimes it doesn’t get cold enough in Sydney). Poppies begin to show their colors in April and can last through June depending on heat and humidity. This is Gramma, one of my very best friends & absolute inspirations. I often say how she seems in better shape than I ever could be. 😂 She has been gardening for many years. She even had a huge azalea garden, mostly grown from stem propagation in the creek behind their cottage. (More on that paradisiac cottage later, with photos!) It’s her & my other grandmother who have helped shaped me into who I am today, my love for the earth & creation. It’s from her mother-in-law, my great-grandmother, that my “Tiger Eyes” marigolds from my shop came from. 🌼 Here, she’s showing off her latest garden accomplishment: growing poppies for the first time, Hungarian breadseed poppies, that is. The seeds came all the way from CA from a fellow, generous gardener, Jenny from @the_happy_herban. 🌞 I had to document just how tall these beauties got! 😲 And, the color is just gorgeous. I’ll definitely be growing these next year. I’ve yet to have success with poppies myself, but I keep trying. How can I not with that color?! Leave it up to Gramma to be able to grow just about anything!
