🌹 Lesson number 10: The Importance of Integration 🌹 The real change only happens when we bring the retreat experience into our daily lives. It's about translating that inner peace into our everyday interactions. Imagine someone says something triggering. Your usual reaction might be anger, sadness, or anxiety. But what if you observe the bodily sensations that arise? Your heart races, palms sweat, and breath becomes shallow. There might be some tightening in your throat, a contraction in your stomack, some heat coming in your belly. When you get even closer to the sensation, you might realise those are vibrations of energy, an information to your brain. Then your brain might start interpreting those sensations, labelling them as pleasant or unpleasant. By simply being aware of these sensations without labelling them, something shifts. They lose their intensity and soften. You're no longer reacting but responding with calm and awareness. Integration involves bringing this awareness into our daily routines. Whether through meditation, reflection, or simply staying present, we continue to cultivate equanimity in "triggering" situations. This is how we truly set ourselves free. There are days that are easier than others. 🌿 Lesson 9: Embracing Discomfort for Growth 🌿 The so dreaded silence was not the hardest part of the Vipassana retreat. The sitting was. In yoga, there's a saying: "The pose you avoid the most is the pose you need the most." This rang true during my Vipassana experience. Sitting cross-legged may seem comfortable at first, but holding the pose over 10 hours a day, discomfort inevitably sets in. Intense sensations arise, testing our ability to stay present. The key is to observe these sensations without aversion. 🌼 Lesson 8: Embracing Equanimity 🌼 During my Vipassana retreat, I immersed deeper in the art of equanimity—finding peace amidst life's ever-changing flow. Equanimity isn't just about remaining calm; it's about dissolving the labels we attach to our experiences. It's releasing the resistance, aversion, and craving towards what arises within us. For example, during one meditation session, I felt intense discomfort in my legs. Instead of immediately labeling it as "pain" and resisting it, I tried to observe it with equanimity. I noticed how the sensation changed, intensified, and eventually faded away. Through this, I realized that every sensation, every emotion, is impermanent—it arises and passes away like waves in the ocean. Equanimity is like being the calm observer in the midst of life's storms. It's recognizing that everything—our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations—is transient. By letting go of our attachments and aversions, we can navigate life's ups and downs with greater ease and peace. Lesson 7: The Power of Awareness Awareness brings about equanimity. By deeply tuning into bodily sensations, we can release stored emotions and patterns (samskaras) within the body. This deep awareness sheds light on these patterns, allowing us to release them. I'm not talking about a superficial awareness, but a profound connection with bodily sensations at the deepest level. It's incredible to me how this awareness helps release these deep-seated patterns. 🌻 Lesson 6: Letting go of perfectionism 🌻 During the retreat, I realised perfectionism can show up within the meditation journey! Perfectionism in meditation can manifest as feeling inadequate, having too busy of a mind, or not sitting still enough. I came deeper in the learning to be kind to myself and accept where I was at at that time, at each sitting, at each moment. My mind was often busy, and my early morning and post-lunch meditations sometimes turned into the most divine naps :). And that was okay. I embraced being imperfectly perfect. I also noticed my mind's tendency to seek validation and acceptance from others as a student of meditation. I caught myself closing my curtains to sleep instead of meditating, or feeling ashamed if I missed the 4am session. 🌺 Lesson number 5: Silence is golden. 🌺 During the retreat, we experienced a unique blend of togetherness and solitude. Despite being in a group, we couldn't communicate verbally or non-verbally, mirroring the superficiality often found in everyday interactions. Being alone in noble silence became an important part of our learning. True healing comes from being with ourselves, without distractions or external influences. Many of my clients resist being alone, associating it with loneliness and sadness. But being alone doesn't have to mean loneliness, it can be profoundly rejuvenating. The silence I was dreading the most before the retreat, was actually the easy part of the retreat. Noble silence was incredibly rejuvenating. Without superficial conversations or unnecessary noise, we could truly connect to the inner world without adding noise from interactions. In many ways, we were not in total silence. Nature sounds surrounded us, offering healing and tranquility. Learning to be comfortable in silence is a profound journey. We don't need to fill the void with unhealthy distractions. 🌟 Leaning into trust 🌟 The first few days of my 10 day Vipassana retreat were tough. I missed my boys and I felt uncomfortable in the silence and long hours of sitting.... so much I had thoughts of packing up and heading home. I tried to push those feelings away thinking that would allow me to stay longer, but then I remembered something I teach! and coach... Allowing myself to feel the feelings! 💭 Once I leaned into the feelings of miss, the sensation in my stomach, the contraction of energy, with compassion and honesty, I felt my body relaxed. Slowly but surely, with the simple act of observing with no resistance, the essence of those feelings, the vibrations, the sensations faded away. Now, as I return home, I'm reminding myself of those three valuable habits: 1️⃣ A deeper awareness of my feelings, at the sensation level. 2️⃣ A reminder that allowing those feelings to be felt, without judgment, is the path to liberation. 3️⃣ A reminder to celebrate my boys, my husband, and the beautiful life I've created. Life isn't always perfect, and that's okay. 🌿 The gift of boredom 🌿 No phone, no guitar, no yoga, no friends, no kids to take care of, no books! and this for 10 days. Just the gift of being. At first, it felt a bit uncomfortable, my mind was racing in all direction, but eventually, it became spacious. In that space, reflections, yearnings, and growth can flourish. There's room for creativity to blossom. I found myself composing articles in my head and even writing a new song. Boredom is truly a gift! 🌿 3 Habits to Create More Mind Space! 🌿 1 - Set Boundaries with Technology, Work, and Commitments: Coming home I am taking more control of my time by setting clear boundaries with technology ( #1 definitely!), work, family and other commitments. 2 - Schedule Moments to Just Be: My Fridays are dedicated to just being... I am not filling that day off with other classes and appointments or chores. I am allowing myself lots of moments of quiet reflection, relaxation and creation. I am saying no more often than not. 3- Decluttering my mind: I intentionally and consciously practice mental decluttering by letting go of cravings and aversions. Each time I observe my mind craving, clinging, worrying, disliking, hating, judging, I acknowledge this with kindness and often humour! It is funny where the mind can go. If the thought has already been embodied and I feel some sensations from the thought, I allow and observe without resisting. And by softening, this allow the sensation to lessen. It was an accident. The long weekend camping trip we took last weekend landed us in a spot with no phone reception or wifi - except for one person in our group who had to walk a fair distance to *maybe* pick up a signal. In the journey of yoga and life, there’s a profound wisdom in the discomfort. We often find ourselves avoiding certain poses, instinctively steering clear of the ones that challenge us the most. And yes, there are valid reasons for that avoidance—past injuries, intuitive feelings that a pose isn’t right for us. It’s crucial to honor those signals, to listen to our bodies and not push beyond our limits. Yet, there’s another aspect to consider: the discomfort itself. It’s said that the pose truly begins when we want to leave it. In that moment of discomfort, whether on the mat or in life, lies a rich opportunity for growth. During a Vipassana retreat, where I sat in meditation for hours each day, I encountered intense discomfort. There were moments of sharp sensation, of almost overwhelming discomfort. But as I persisted, something shifted. The discomfort ceased to be labeled as “pain” and transformed into mere sensation, sometimes just a gentle vibration. It was then that I felt deeply connected to the truth—we are vibrational beings, connected to a universal source of energy. Staying still, especially for someone like me who finds it challenging, became my greatest teacher. I learned that discomfort can be observed without judgment, that it can become okay. Through the discomfort, we release our labels of pain and connect with something deeper within ourselves. Change can be hard, but small changes over time mount into bigger changes and therefore bigger outcomes. I watched a documentary the other day called "Touching the void" about a mountain climber trying to get off the mountain whilst injured. He didn't think he could make it, but he just broke down the descent into small achievable goals such as "I just need to get to this next section" and would set his sights on that goal. This is a technique adapted to so many different situations. (great doco, highly recommend, may have been on prime or Netflix). Baby steps! Don't try to run before you walk. You never hear of a toddler that is learning to walk, falls 100 times and decides that they are not going to try anymore! ☀️45 trips around the sun! ☀️ Life, as it is, with its ebbs and flows, highs and lows, has brought me to this pivotal moment. As I stand on the threshold of perimenopause, I find myself better equipped than ever before to embrace this transition. Reflecting on my journey, I realise that previous rites of passage in my life, such as menstruation and motherhood, were not met with the guidance and celebration they deserved. However, as I approach this new phase, I'm fortunate to have encountered women who have traversed this bridge before me. Together, we hold hands, sharing wisdom and reassurance with the next generation. The other side of this transition appears radiant, with women embracing their power and authenticity, liberated from the shackles of societal expectations. Sagescence. Though I'm aware that this journey will span years, I'm empowered by the knowledge and support I've gathered. With each step forward, I step into my prime years with anticipation and excitement. The cost of being well: Have you found that the basic necessities for looking after yourself and living a good life are costing you more? You're not alone. Most Australians are experiencing a crisis in their cost of living. Sadly, this pressure we're all experiencing is having a huge effect on how we look after ourselves. With increased interest rates, we're experiencing cost of living pressure in our family too. One area I have cut back on is spending on exercise 😱 I have not gone to the gym since pre-Covid, and only go to the swimming pool now and then without the kids. Now, if you know me by now, you'd know that I'm still exercising just as much, however I am choosing free and low-cost options. Here are some of the home-based activities I like to do: - walks - runs - yoga - pilates - weights/resistance bands - HIIT sessions I aim for 45-60 minutes most days a week. Even doing this though, I've realised I'm not getting enough isolated muscle training, so I'll be going back to the gym once a week. Some people have cut back on going to the gym or paid sports, but lack the motivation or self discipline to exercise at home. As a result, their exercise routine gets dropped completely. This is not a great outcome. Similarly, people are choosing not to buy healthy, fresh food in favour of cheaper, bulk-produced alternatives, such as canned fruit with sugar syrup, or skipping fruit and veg altogether. If cost of living pressure is weighing down on you reach out for support (advice, counseling, and welfare) if needed. I used to believe that spiritual healing and growth would effortlessly allow me to truly connect with most people without any drama. However, I've come to understand that growth often initiates a shift where certain relationships no longer resonate. While my compassion and understanding of humanity have expanded, my social circles have significantly changed, some relationships have ended, some circles have expanded to deeper relationships... Feeling this way signifies that you're no longer inclined or enthusiastic about spending time with certain individuals, and it's a clear indicator of personal growth. Let's approach these situations with kindness, engaging in those difficult conversations to either redefine relationships or gracefully part ways. It's important to remember that we're all on unique journeys, evolving at our own pace and in our own directions. Externally, I may come across confident & like I’ve got my shit together but internally I’m just an introvert who occasionally overthinks the next step 😅✌🏼 What I’ve come to realise is that the timing is never going to be perfect & sometimes you’ll fail a couple of times before you get it right so there’s no point holding back from doing the things that light you up. Learning to understand what 'overwhelms' me (put this in commas as it does get overused a bit like a buzz word or the new 'busy') has been so important. Not only does it force you to slow down, reflect, and show you where you need to put boundaries in place, stop people pleasing or checking in with your expectations of yourself, but it also is an indication of what you are finding hard or challenging right now. When things are hard, it means you need practice. When you practice, you get better, and when you get better, overwhelm subsides, until a new obstacle becomes overwhelming.....then you start again. Think of the first time you learnt to drive, there were the indicators, the gears, brakes, people on the road, stay in your lane, read road signs, traffic lights, music, your teacher giving directions, knowing the directions to go..... Overwhelming right!!! BUT, how many of us get in a car now and our subconscious is driving for us..... No overwhelm What overwhelms you?
