Have you been Quiet Quitting? I remember hearing this term sometime last year. It made sense to me, because I had been there. But by 2022 I was in full-on burnout. Quiet Quitting is not the same as burnout. Think of Quiet Quitting as a more intentional decision, a choice to decrease the energy you put into your job. This can be for many reasons - the pay, the leadership, the culture, or a whole host of other reasons. Burnout is a much more severe issue, as you can see in this graphic. ✨ Mindfulness and Technology ✨ Dust got Olivia a iPod dupe. Here's how we processed this decision, mindfully...What we know: she loves music, especially songs she can sing too. She enjoys wearing her headphones and is learning about different genres in preparation for what instrument she might like to learn to play first as well what kinds of music help us with with what (e.g., pick me up versus slow down and reflect). We love: we can manage what is downloaded onto it, it is an activity she can do all on her own, it is helping her spend time with herself and have some control. She doesn't know how to adjust the volume...yet 😉 I've read about and experimented with the benefits and dangers of technology for young children. Summary of my findings: ✨ RESEARCH: iPods and simple cells have not been shown to have the same ill effects as the social media and online marketplace cell/devices children are given today ✨ Last yr we gave O my old iPad from gradschool. Even though it wasn't super capable we saw a night/day difference in her behavior, within the week. She was obsessed, always asking for it. Insisting she have more time with it when time was up. Refusing to do much of anything without taking it along. Choosing it over other highly preferred activities and social opportunities. We worked through as much of this as possible, for a whole month, and then we called it. No more iPads, no more games on our cell phones. She had withdrawals for a week or so, and hasn't asked for them since. Lately we have been noodling over reintroducing it, but how, what, and when? Her life is full enough, we didn't want to add tech as an activity back in. And then Dusty remembers the iPod!! So for now, in our house, we choose low-tech, not no-tech. Teaching mindfulness to 3 little ladies in our hustle-grind world is hard enough. We'd rather not compete with a device intentionally created to require the users full attention. Als je deze 5 dingen goed doet… Zit je in de top 1,5% in de omgang met je kennis. Dit is natuurlijk een bedacht getal, maar je begrijpt dat we de top bedoelen. Het komt namelijk zeer vaak voor dat iemand vol trots zijn Systeem om kennis te managen (ook wel Persoonlijk Kennis Management genoemd) laat zien en dat het dan eigenlijk op dezelfde manier gebruikt wordt als Word-files in diverse mapjes. Oefff, de piek voor de zomervakantie begint! Gelukkig heb ik mijn overzicht in mijn Breinpaleis. Een werk-dashboard voor alles wat ik rondom moral design strategy doe op de Fontys. We are in a state of constant distraction impacting our ability to focus, retain and recall Information. In his book, Kwik breaks down the main hinderances we are facing impacting our focus and memory called the 4 digital horsemen: Digital Dayluge We consume as much data in a single day as the average person in 1400 would have consumed in an entire life lifetime we are in a critical state of information overload Digital Distraction Average person consumes 3x the amount of info as people in the 60’s did We are always on leading us to be exhausted and burnt out Multitasking causes the brain to burn through fuel making the brain feel exhausted and disoriented. We’ve literally depleted nutrients in the brain causing us to have compromises in cognitive and physical performance Digital Dementia When was the last time you had to remember someone’s phone number? we don’t give our minds the chance to do the work taking away our brain’s ability to do the memorization for us = prevents long term memories Our brains are a muscle and the more you use it, the more it can store. I love, love, love my Newsletter Fam. Every Monday I send a letter to the fam with musings, what’s what, and sometimes a letter with not too much in it at all. It’s not spammy and you can come and go as you please if you feel like you need some space in your inbox. This is one thing I did consistently during my time off Instagram and one of the MOST IMPORTANT ways of cultivating community and keeping connected away from social media (well actually social media aside I think it’s the BEST way to keep connected). There’s also something truly special about receiving emails from the fam - knowing they’ve taken the time to read your letter, hit reply and then type a response. REALITY CHECK: One has become trickier to do than the other, BUT not impossible. We have to WANT to prioritise being “together, together” more than being “alone, together”. GREAT NEWS: We can indeed prioritise being together, together. It doesn’t even have to be all the time, we can carve out time and space to do so AND we can respect each other when we’re together.  Think of a time you’ve been sitting in a room, perhaps at home in your lounge room or out at dinner where everyone is together, but in their own world? Head down in their phones, and you kinda shake your head wondering how it got like this? You’re all alone, even though you’re all together. How did that make you feel? Now think of a time when you’ve been in your groove, connecting with others, having the best time…and your phone is a distant thought, so much so you don’t even take photos? You’re buzzing. This is everyone being together, together. How did that make you feel? Have we forgotten how to be together, together OR do we just need a little love nudge reminder every now and then? The Sacred Connection Circle is a devoted online space where we get to be together, together.
