“How do you know she’s autistic, she’s only 2?” Signs of autism are usually seen in children between the ages of 12-18 months. One of the first signs for us was Leona didn’t respond to her name. She then had a huge eye contact regression. Eye contact is one of the most prominent signs noticed in a child with autism. Not all children with autism struggle with eye contact, but it is very common. After she turned One, Leona pretty much had no eye contact at all. Today she still doesn’t always look you in the eye, but working with her and being in her space, by her side has tremendously increased the amount of eye contact we get. Its so special when she looks you in the eye. Eye contact was a HUGE milestone for us! It still is every time she locks into my eyes, and better yet someone else’s. She still does not recognize/respond to her name but every once in awhile. The days are huge for her. She learns so much everyday. Something that comes so easy to everyone else is HUGE to us and celebrated daily in her little world “good eye contact” is a sentence used quite often here🥹❤️👀 #eyecontact #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #learning #praise #therapy #autismmomlife #milestone #patience #everyday

An invaluable resource for college students on the autism spectrum, is getting peer support to walk through the process from college to the workplace. Besides a career prep program, you can consider is getting peer support 👥 Getting connected with a peer who has walked through the process already, and can walk you through the transition is an invaluable resource. 👣 It’s helpful to learn from a peer when you’re stepping into these new spaces like going for a job that we might feel really intimidated by. For instance, at University of Delaware, they have spectrum scholars where there's peer support. At this university, they provide programs that are more supportive to people with autism who might need peer support and other programs to make college feel more accessible. Within a peer support group, you can also get invaluable advice from peers who have already been through or are going through the transition from college to the workplace. 💌 Forward this post to anyone who could benefit from our content. We appreciate you sharing our message! 👉🏼We'd love for you to follow us in this month's series on thriving in the workplace as a young professional with ASD >> @chesco.wellbeing #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #autismsupport #autismstrong #autismacceptance #autismadvocate #autismlove #worldautismday #autismawarenessday #autismmom #autismmoms #autismmomlife #mentalhealthforteens #teenmentalhealthadvocate

Parents of neurodivergent children often find themselves caught in a cycle of recurring thoughts that contribute to the recycling of experiences. Here are some examples: **I am being selfish for needing a break:** Prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential! Challenge those thoughts that make you feel guilty for taking time for yourself. Remember, you deserve to recharge and nurture your well-being too. **I am too overwhelmed to try something new:** Don’t let fear hold you back! Explore new approaches, seek support, and embrace personal growth beyond your familiar routines. You’re capable of amazing things, even beyond what you think. **My own goals can wait until my child reaches theirs:** Your dreams matter! It’s time to release the belief that your goals can wait. By pursuing your passions, you’re not only nurturing your soul but also showing your child the power of resilience and determination. or **”I’m not doing enough”:** Release the weight of self-doubt and know that you are doing your best. You are a loving and dedicated parent, constantly learning and growing alongside your child. Give yourself credit for the progress you’ve made. **”Why isn’t my child reaching the same milestones”:** Each child is unique and has their own path. Release the pressure of comparison and instead celebrate your child’s individual progress. Embrace their strengths, focus on their journey, and believe in their limitless potential. **”I’m responsible for my child’s difficulties”:** Take a deep breath and let go of self-blame. Neurodivergence is not your fault. Instead, focus on providing love, understanding, and the necessary support to empower your child. You are their champion! If you’re looking for personalized guidance and support in reframing your mindset and breaking free from the cycle of recycling experiences, send me a DM. Today was a hard special needs mom day. Whenever we have to talk about Maxs future, I get sad. Kids like Max get phased out the older they get. They can’t go to Math or Science. We’re not setting a writing goal. It’s always a really emotional and hard day for me. Especially as we near the end of elementary But. Tonight. I chose to take Max to his class concert. We were in a HOT jam packed room. Filled with babies and curly haired littles (max target). But I felt it was important to do. I’ve never been so happy or content in a moment (in a hot overcrowded humid room). Max LOVED the concert. He got to see his teacher. His paraprofessional. He got to see classmates. And instead of forcing Max on stage, he sat in front of and danced and waved his snake. And clapped. And it was perfect. At one point he sprinted across the stage to which if you’re ever with Matt or I know you know we jump sprint and tackle max. So I sprinted across the stage convinced he’d found a baby he was going to go grab. Nope. He’s spotted his teacher. Mr. Warren who he loves so much that he had to get to him. Well as you can see Mr Warren walked max back with me. And came and sat with max and Mrs. Powell for the show. Max would sit on his lap. Then would get up and hug Aimee Ziebell Powell his para. Then would dance. And repeat. This to me is inclusion. We didn’t forced max onstage. We made Maxs space fun for him. Made him feel part of the community. And tonight I was reminded again. As I always am that I can’t worry about the future. I’ve fought so hard for what we have. And I’ll never stop surrounding him with the best. And doing things to the beat of our own drum. ⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #autismmomlife #autismproud #empoweredwoman #empoweredwomanempowerwomen #empoweredwomanlifestyle #exhaustedmommy #exhaustedmommyanddaddy #teengirlmom

🤭This is it…don't get scared now🤭 I have taken the plunge and created a podcast to talk all things Lupus and Autism related as well as other parts of life. If you haven't listened to @_notso_typical I really believe you are missing out. Áine is a local girl from my neck of the woods (or Priory) who talks through her life experiences as someone with autism. She helps me to see things from my boy's point of view, and she is worth a follow and listen. But it got me thinking about my own experiences and how I could document everything and put myself out there to share and hopefully educate or enlighten or just to look back on as a memory. So I did it. I recorded myself talking to...myself talking through my diagnosis of Lupus. It's my first one so hopefully I will get better with time and practice 😁 here's hoping.

When it comes to transitioning from the college setting into the job setting as someone on the autism spectrum, you can find several different supports either on campus or within the community. ✅ Join a career prep program ✅ Get peer support to walk you through the job process ✅ Book sessions with a career counselor Let's first dive into finding a career preparation program within your college. These programs can be tailored to individuals on the autism spectrum to discover the skills they need for work. Plus, they can enhance your ability to seek out other skills to be employable. They can also help you gain confidence as you’re seeking a job and navigating the market. And so this can include workshops for: 📄 building a resume 🧑🏽‍💼 honing interview skills 🧑🏻‍🏫 getting training and job placement assistance If you want to see what supports and resources are out there, in addition to career prep program within your college, then go to the PA autism resource website for more resources >> https://paautism.org/resource/employment/ Know someone who could benefit from our content? 💌 Forward this post to them 👉🏼We'd love for you to follow us in this month's series on thriving in the workplace as a young professional with ASD >> @chesco.wellbeing #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #autismsupport #autismstrong #autismacceptance #autismadvocate #autismlove #worldautismday #autismawarenessday #autismmom #autismmoms #autismmomlife #mentalhealthforteens #teenmentalhealthadvocate

Being a mom is tough. Being a mom to a neurodivergent child is a whole new ball game. It's like playing a video game in expert mode without knowing which way up to hold the controls, let alone how to play the game. But guess what? You're doing a great job! I know it can be overwhelming to learn all the information you need when it comes to raising a neurospicy kid. It's okay to feel like you're screwing up sometimes. Trust me, your love and dedication are what matters the most. I'm here to remind you to take care of yourself too. Self-care isn't selfish; it's necessary. When you're feeling good, you can be a better mom to your child, and perhaps feel like your getting more things right than wrong for a change. Remember, you're not alone in this journey. Reach out to other moms who are going through similar experiences. Join support groups, attend workshops, and surround yourself with positivity. Together, we can conquer anything! If you'd like to know more about how I can support you, comment with 'help' and I'll be in touch. * * * * * #stressparenting #neurodivergentfamily #overwhelmedmum #autismmomlife #neurospicy #raisegoodhumans #overwhelmedmom #exhaustedmommy #survivingmotherhood #parenthacks #autismparenting #mumproblems #tiredmum #autismmoms #parentingdoneright #adhdparenting #parentingproblems #parentingskills #autismparent #parentsupport #momtips #tiredmama #parentinggoals #autismsupport #momstruggles #neurodivergent #parentingtips #GetWildfit #PositiveIntelligence #FastLikeAGirl

The power of storytelling! “Rose in the Machine” was a moving play that had me reliving part of caregiving journey that I had blocked out. It was 2 hrs of watching my life played back to me - those early days with Summer - the time when I was treading water in the ocean of despair, desperately trying to keep my head above water as life around me continued as usual. The most poignant part was the interviews with the 2 autistic adults. A small window into Summer’s world. After the play, my overwhelming desire was to hug Summer and apologize for focusing on the wrong things when she was younger. She has so much to teach me and the world. Every parent of an autistic child should watch this play. @nac.cna #nac #ottawa #ottawalife #ottawaarts #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismmoms #autismmom #autismcommunity #autismmomlife #autismfamily #autismlove #autismparent #autismparents #autismparenting #autismfamilies #autismfamily💙

Mombie zombie no more I started doing a few other things that I wasn’t normally taking and I’m shocked at the results. I was nervous and hesitant because in the past anything I ever tried gave me chest pains and stomach pain you name it Within 15-30 min I felt like a calming effect over me completely relaxed and had energy to focus and take on the day at the same time. I’ve never had results right away after one dose of something. I’ve never seen harmonic frequencies in a product before and was intrigued to see what it was all about. All my irritability went away which is amazing because I’m normally the most irritable first thing in the am getting the kids ready for the day Do you struggle with 🍄 brainfog? 🍄 focus 🍄 irritable? 🍄 Energy 🍄 Mood They are so happy to have a happy and healthy mom back instead of an irritable and frustrated one. Let’s get real!! When it comes to restroom usage with my autistic son, Makai, we’ve encountered quite the adventure. Here are just a few challenges we’ve faced: 1️⃣ Makai’s bladder control can be a rollercoaster ride! Last-minute dashes to the bathroom have led to, well, some unexpected accidents and the occasional UTI scare. 2️⃣ Wet floors and countertops? Oh, no-no for Makai! His aversion to stepping on anything damp turns restroom visits into a minefield of careful tiptoeing and creative acrobatics. 3️⃣ The volume of those toilets flushing in public restrooms can practically wake the dead! Makai’s sensitive ears go into full-on panic mode, making potty time a symphony of stress. 4️⃣ And let’s not forget those electric hand dryers! They might as well be jet engines in Makai’s world. The noise level sends him running for cover faster than a superhero on a mission. (FYI: Makai does use noise canceling headphones, but they don’t provide him much relief to certain sounds.) But fear not, I’ve discovered a secret weapon – a portable camping toilet for the car! It’s been an absolute game-changer and a true lifesaver. With our tinted backseat providing Makai with the privacy he deserves, he can comfortably handle his business on the go. So, whether we’re on a long journey or just a quick trip around town, having a portable camping toilet in the car has made all the difference in ensuring Makai’s well-being. Makai is 12-years-old so we found one that is a good size and that he feels comfortable using. It’s a Neuro-Ninja Mom tip that brings peace of mind and makes restroom adventures a whole lot easier. Of course, we still brave the public restrooms from time to time, and let me tell you, it’s a challenge worthy of a true ninja! Honestly, it’s easy for so many college students to be so immersed in their school work and college life that they haven’t thought too much about starting their transition into a career during the final years of college. As a junior or senior in college, you’re fully immersed in the college experience⤵️ ✅ going to class ✅ completing short and long-term projects ✅ studying for exams In the final years of college, you finally feel like you’re in a routine, and you’ve got the right accommodations and accessibility to thrive in college. But lurking in the back of your mind is the next big transition coming – graduation and entering the professional work space. And that’s what we’d like to dig into this month. We’re going to dive into understanding and advocating for yourself when it comes to transitioning from 🏫 college to the workplace, as an individual on the autism spectrum. What it comes down to is that we want you to know the types of support, on campus and in the workplace, you can take advantage of. 💙 With the right support, you can make the transition from college to work easier and more successful. As Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month comes to a close, it's crucial to remember that our support and understanding shouldn't end with April. Autism isn't just a focus for one month; it's a part of everyday life for many individuals and families- for my son... for my family. Let's carry the spirit of acceptance, inclusion, and understanding beyond April. Let's continue to educate ourselves, advocate for acceptance, and create spaces where Autistic individuals feel valued, empowered and understood year-round. Together, we can make every day about Autism Acceptance! #AutismAcceptance #BeyondApril #EverydayAwareness #specialneedsmomlife #actuallyautistic #specialneedsmommy #specialneedsmomma #autismwarrior #specialneedsmoms #differentnotless #autismadvocate #blackmommies #momssupportmoms #mommymode #momsunite #realmoms #supportmoms #blackmomsbelike #autismfamilies #autismparent #autismmomma #autismmoms #autismmomlife #autismmom #specialneedseducation #specialneedsmama #specialneedsmum #inclusionmatters #asd

Being an autism mom is so hard. This past year has been the hardest on me mentally, physically and spiritually. I’ve lost myself . Ive decided I have to better care for myself so I can take better care Layla. So yesterday morning I had a breast reduction. I knew this would be hard on Layla not understanding why mommy wasn’t doing all the things in our routines. I didn’t realize how depressed and sad she would be. Brad took the week off work to be with her and to help take care of me. I couldn’t have done this without him. I miss my girl. Ive never been away from her this long. We have such a bond seeing how she reacts without me is hard but it also can be a good thing. It gives her and her daddy time to play and bond since he works out of town. We have also had the discussion about how we both need to take better care of ourselves to better care of her. We aren’t getting any younger. All of those questions about the future hit me hard this week also. We just have to keep faith and keep praying . #autismfamily #autismmomlife #mommymakeover #autismparent

A great quick snack or meal! I use frozen fruit for my smoothies 95% of the time -even in-season. Frozen fruit is not only available year-round, but it's also picked and frozen at its ripest. it's full of the same nutrients fresh fruit contains and it's very convenient to have on hand. Having a variety of frozen fruits in your freezer will help you keep your smoothies exciting to enjoy and this recipe for a mango-peach smoothie is no different! Doesn't it look fresh, tropical, and fun to sip? Mango Peach Protein Smoothie! Kickstart your day with this refreshing Mango Peach Smoothie! It’s full of fresh fruit and delicious flavors. Servings: 2 INGREDIENTS 1 ½ cups almond milk 2 Scoops your favourite protein powder (I use VaVa Voom Vanilla powder)not chalky 👍 1 cup diced peaches, fresh or frozen 1 cup chopped mango, fresh or frozen ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup ice INSTRUCTIONS In a blender, combine almond milk, peaches, mango, vanilla. Any marriage is difficult and requires attention and hard work. Marriages of couples with a special needs child require even more time and hard work. Check-in with your partner on these topics: 1. Are we spending enough time together as a couple? Could we ask for help from our family or friends in order to get an hour or two alone? 2. Is one partner carrying too much responsibility? What tasks or even mental load could the other partner take on? Are there tasks or appointments that may be better balanced by having both parents present? 3. Has one partner had to sacrifice more than the other? Maybe had to change jobs to allow for more flexibility or give up a career you loved to move closer to a school for your child? Allow time for adjustment to any big changes in your life. Be ok, with feeling out of sorts. Talk it through to allow everyone to be heard. It may not change anything, you may still need to leave that job, but having the ability to talk about it will result in feeling less resentful. 4. Could we benefit from counseling? Would a third party looking in have a better perspective and provide us with feedback that could be helpful to our family? #autismmom #autismmomma #autismmomsrock #autismmomlife #autismdad #autismdadsrock #autismdaddy #autismdads

Shedding Light on the Overlapping World of OCD and Autism! • Did you know? It’s not uncommon for individuals with autism to also experience Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). These two conditions can intertwine, presenting unique challenges and opportunities for growth. • Statistics reveal that during the pre-teen and teen years, approximately 30% of individuals on the autism spectrum may develop symptoms of OCD. It’s important to understand these co-occurring conditions to provide the best support for our incredible young minds. • I want to share this knowledge because it hits close to home. My 12-year-old son, Makai, is now navigating the world with both Autism and OCD. Together, we’re learning, growing, and embracing the unique journey that unfolds. Makai’s journey with OCD began with a sudden increase in repetitive behaviors that were beyond his usual stimming. These compulsions became overwhelming, causing him significant distress and interfering with his daily life. Understanding OCD and the overlap with autism has helped us in being able to support Makai. We’ve learned that his autistic traits, such as a strong need for predictability and a heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli, can contribute to the development of OCD symptoms. The bubble graph highlights the key similarities and differences between OCD and autism, demonstrating how they can sometimes coexist. However, it’s important to note that each individual experiences OCD and autism differently, and the symptoms can vary widely. If you’re a parent of a pre-teen or teenager with autism who is exhibiting symptoms of OCD, there are resources and support available to help you navigate this journey. Here are some helpful links: • International OCD Foundation: https://iocdf.org/ • National Institute of Mental Health: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd • #autismmom #autismjourney #ocdawareness #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismadvocate #neurodivergentparenting #neurodivergentfamily #neurodiversefamily #autismparent #autismmomlife #neurodivergentawareness #ocdsupport #autismcommunity #ilovesomeonewithautism

As April comes to a close, let’s remember that autism awareness isn’t confined to just one month. Let’s keep the conversation going, keep learning, and keep supporting those with autism every day. Together, we can create a more inclusive and understanding world.

Going to work with retro vibes. As Autism Awareness Month comes to an end, just wanna give a word of encouragement and inspiration to ALWAYS be yourself. Autistic or allistic. Growing up, I never learned to mask. My mum always taught me to embrace my differences. When I got frustrated about not fitting in, she was honest about how my differences would always make this hard for me BUT how it would also allow me to find authentic people that truly love me for me. Because I do not mask, people automatically notice my communication differences and Asperger's traits; but as I meet more people that accept me and love me for these traits, even say I'm cool, I learn to love and accept these differences that I often didn't understand growing up. In short, I am so BLESSED and thankful for all the people in my circle and for a mum who never gives up; never stops believing in me; and NEVER stops advocating. She gets so happy when I find authentic people to befriend and who accept me for me. I was once told by a coworker: "To know you is to love you" and that is so true😊🙃 HAPPY SUNDAY! #blessed #christiangirlsrock #christianwriters #retro #retrowear #retrofashion #autismlife💙 #aspergirl #aspiesofinstagram #autisticdoctor #autisticwriter #autismawarenessmonth2024 #aspergers #autismmom #autismmomlife💙 #neurodivergent #autismmomlife #blackdoctors #mixedgirl #loveyourself #veterinariansofinstagram🐾👩🏽‍⚕️🐇 #veterinarylife #amateurblogger #beyourself #fashionista #bellepoque #inspiration #blackveterinarian #nativeamerican

Sometimes, tears are the only words your heart can speak. From personal experience, being an autism mom can be an emotional rollercoaster. The joys are immense, the challenges are real, and the love is boundless. But sometimes, the weight of it all can feel overwhelming, leaving us speechless and reaching for tissues instead of words. If you’re a fellow mom raising a neurodivergent child, you know what I mean. Those moments when the tears just flow, carrying with them a mix of emotions: frustration, exhaustion, worry, love, and everything in between. It’s okay to cry, mama. It’s okay to let the tears wash away the stress and release the pent-up emotions. Crying isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of the strength it takes to navigate the highs and lows of this journey. It’s your body’s way of communicating when words fail to capture the depth of what you’re feeling. It’s a release, a way to process the complexities of this journey. When our children face challenges or when the weight of our responsibilities feels overwhelming, tears become our silent companions, speaking volumes when words fail. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey. We’re in this together, supporting and uplifting each other every step of the way. So, don’t hold back the tears, mama! Let them flow! And when you’re ready, reach out to me. I’m here if you need someone to talk to, cry with, or simply share a moment of understanding, or if you’re interested in exploring how life coaching can support you on this journey. * Remember, you are not alone. Behavior is a form of communication that needs to be listened to. Too many times, people judge behaviors without looking for the root cause that would provide a solution. As an educator, I see how behaviors can be transformed through connection. Each child is unique and has a right to be seen for who they are under the behaviors. It is human nature to try and talk when things are going wrong. Sometimes, the solution is silence. For many children, silence is giving space to calm down. Silence is validating that it is ok to have strong feelings, and you are there for the child. I challenge you! The next time you are presented with a child who is not regulated, try calm silence. Just be! . . . #momof5club #animallovers❤️ #momliferocks #livinglifefully #healthylivingtips #autismmomlife #workingmomlife #oneproudmomma #selfdevelopmentjourney #mentalhealthjourney

Acceptance isn't a destination we reach or a box we tick off. It's not a noun; it's a verb, an ongoing process, a series of choices we make every single day along this autism parenting journey. Acceptance isn't about pretending everything is sunshine and rainbows. It's about acknowledging our reality, even when it hurts. It's about dropping the pointless arguments with fate and embracing what is. As Byron Katie wisely said, "When we argue with reality, we lose—but only 100% of the time." Acceptance isn't about giving up or pretending everything is perfect. It's about finding peace in the midst of chaos, strength in the face of adversity, and love in every moment, just as it is. 💙 #autismmom #livingalongsideautism #autismfamily #notyouraverageautismmom #autismmomlife #inclusion #heismywhy #fcvblogsquad

Disney mom? Where are the kids? Well, here’s our story! I am a mom of three. Bart 8, Rori 6 and Olav 3. In this picture you see my youngest. What about the eldest? Well they have a severe development disorder with autism. Their mental age would probably not reach above 4 years. Both the same due to lack of oxygen during birth. On top of that my daughter has hypdysplasia and went through a whole lot of surgery. All this means that I work my parttime job and on top of that more than fulltime as a mom of these three lovely monsters. I can say that it is a lot! It is hard! But also the most beautiful job in the world! ❤️ So you won’t see my kids enioying Disney except for this little guy. Trust me, it breaks my heart everytime we visit. But deep down we know they can’t handle it. It is too much for them. The noise, the crowd, being away from home. So instead they go to respite so that we can give Olav some well deserved time off with his mom and dad. And since our life is far from a fairy tale, we travel to a world filled with it! ✨ some days I have time to post, while others I am just at home running my legs off for my kids. They don’t talk so everything has to be pointed to, signed about or walked to. So next week when you see me posting with just my youngest…now you know. Just remember that my silent days are not because I don’t want to post. It is just because my babies will always have my priority🥰❤️ #disney #disneyposts #disneyinsta #autism #autismmomlife #babybrother #momofthree #momlife #busymom #disneygeek #autismbrother #mybabyboy

Seeing how eager he comes to me saying “Mummy please cut” or “scissors-Cut mummy” makes me wonder how he must have endured in silence all these years dealing with the uncomfortable feeling of the Tags against his body. I can see the relief on his face once the Tag comes off his pants or shirt. Something as simple as the labels/tags on their shirts and plants can create full-body discomfort for our Gems 💎 A lot of children on the autism spectrum have heightened sensitivity to certain things. Even some neurotypical kids like my 4-year-old daughter do not like the labels on her clothes. Recently stumbled upon an article where an autistic adult explained how the feeling of those labels on her skin was like “to*ture to her. It is important to know that not all children can tolerate those labels in silence like Khalil. It may lead to meltdowns or other challenging issues. I’m so glad he’s expressing himself. He comes to me or his dad. He knows exactly where the scissors are and he won’t leave you until you cut them off😀😀 So moms are you going to start cutting off those labels on your kid’s clothes or what? #autismmomlife #autismawareness #parentingautism #sensoryissues #autismmomcoach
