Autism does not have a face. It doesn't look like any particular thing. A person can appear to be "normal" and be on the spectrum. So, be kind.. because I won't play about mine! 🤌🏽😘💯 #autismawareness #autismacceptance #blackandautistic #mentalhealthawareness #blackmentalhealth #momlife #mommabear #donttrymyboy 😅

Something I make a conscious effort to do is to focus on the really GREAT 🌺 Every day will not be wonderful, but prayfully we have the next coming day for another chance at happiness ☺️ another opportunity for joy ❤️and another day to fight again 🫶🏽 Even though it may get extremely hard, never give up, know the pain WONT LAST FOREVER , and HOLD ON 🙏🏽Forget all the rules written for autistic people ♾️ and live your life the way your heart desires for you to live it. *i misspelled the word autism on the sixth slide at the bottom, just so everyone is aware! this post is slightly rambly, but it's been on my mind lately. people in my family frequently ask how they missed my autism, but they don't realize just how much culture played into it. with this post, i'm trying to explain how. ✏️ this also leads into a deeper conversation about how autism is consistently seen through a solely white lens, and that tendency needs to be dismantled. black autistic people exist, nonwhite autistic people exist – and being aware of how we may express autism differently compared to the white guidelines is something that is highly important, yet also frequently overlooked. 💭 how have you all been? i've fallen into a warframe fixation and i cannot seem to stop playing 🥹 do any of you play warframe? #autism #autismacceptance #asd #autisticadult #autizzy #blackandautistic #autismspectrum #autismawareness #autisticpride #autisticwhileblack #autisticandtrans #transautistic #neuroqueer #autismspectrumdisorder #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurospicy #actuallyautistic

As we come to the end of Autism Awareness month I just wanted bring you a little into our world. Aaliyah was diagnosed with Autism recently but her dad and I saw signs in her long before the diagnosis. We noticed that she was having trouble with simple things or wasn't hitting her milestones on time like her peers which caused us to have concerns with what was going on with her and how to get help. Once diagnosed I went into a dark place beating myself up about what did I do wrong to cause this how I was a terrible mom and a failure. I grieved the fact that the dreams I had for her were stripped away right before my eyes out of my control. But it wasn't about my plans it was about God's plan and will. Through lots of patience, love and prayers plus help from our support system Aaliyah is beating the odds and I know that's nothing but the favor of God. She's so bright beyond her years and so sweet, Resilient and loving to everyone she meets. She's on track with everything but we still have a lot of work to do. To anyone who has a child on the spectrum I see you and feel for you some days are tough and you want to give up and others are easy but it's all part of this beautiful colorful journey. I'll never stop fighting and standing up for you to be understood Aaliyah Mommy loves you with everything in me ❤️🌈🧩 #autismawareness #autismbeauty #autistic #rockthespectrum #autisticmom #blackandautistic #autismacceptance #ilovemyautisticdaughter #autismlivesmatter

May is #mentalhealthawareness month 🙏🏽 just so you know #autism is NOT a mental illness it’s a neurological disorder! However many autism people LIVE with mental illnesses, remember I said live not suffer! I live with Anxiety, depression, PTSD & dissociative disorder, I’ve had several suicide attempts I may or may not have had these conditions if I wasn’t autistic or not! Suicide , anxiety , depression & many more mental health illnesses are very real! most ppl won’t ask for health in fear of being laughed at, judged, misunderstood and called crazy Try being understanding Try being a listening ear Try kindness You never know what a person has gone through & possibly still going through Suicide is not funny Anxiety is not funny Depression is not funny Mental health issues are not funny Suicide should not be judged Anxiety should not be judged Depression should not be judged Mental health issues should not be judged If you are struggling you can call the National suicide prevention hotline at 988 🙏🏽 #youarenotalone #mentalhealthawareness #meantalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalillness #anxiety #deppresion #ptsd #cptsd #autistic #actuallyautistic #neurodivergent #wearthepeace #autizzy #neurospicy #blackandautistic #autisticandblack Sweatshirt by @wearthepeacesupport

For those who are new here and want to get to know me, my name is Yorel Brown-Gertman. My first name is of Hebrew origin and it means “The days of God or the Lion of God” including “God will uplift.” My first name even has multiple meanings such as “The Light of God”…”Fire of God”…”God will raise you up”…and also…“The Lion I Am”. I live to empower and share my story to enlighten and uplift others because that’s what I do. I guess you can say according to my name I embody the spirit of true omnipotence. When I was diagnosed on the autism spectrum for the first three years, I knew at an early age that I’m gifted and a deep thinker. I also love to read a lot, because filling my brain with information and knowledge empowers me. For instance…music, ancient history, and anthropology. Also, my thoughts may uplift you…or offend you…depending how you take it. Some may admire me. Some may fear me. Not everyone gets the same version of me, so I act accordingly. I am someone with good intentions regardless if I’m liked or not. Most may not like my honesty. Not how others feel about me matters. I’m also very self-conscious with the words I use and I know the power of words, what they do to people, and how they manifest. Unless it’s music-related or has to do with my gift for music and my multiple talents, I’m not the type who lets words get to me. I understand others view me as the biggest threat because of my maturity level, I never let words get the better of me, I see through people, my soul is strong, and I never live in fear. My brain differs from other people. My belief system has always been that actions speak louder than words and words are meaningless to me if your actions don’t align with them. To me it’s way more important to pay attention to people’s actions rather than their words. I also remember I was once told by a dear friend of mine I am literally the embodiment of every ancestor who came before me, the future, key, and the survival of the African race lives within me. Well, I guess it’s about time I prove it. #blackmaleintellect #blackboyjoy #blackmenarekings #proudblackman #blackandautistic #blackmaleintelligence #blackmenaregods #iamblackpeople

It is officially my birthday! I turn 36 today. 🎉 In my typical Autistic style, to avoid being overwhelmed in the morning I am doing my birthday post now. As someone with pathological demand avoidance and rejection sensitivity this is how I can manage the demand of big days like this. For someone like me even positive feelings can feel very overwhelming so I am giving myself grace. 🥹 Thank you everyone for the early birthday wishes. I have so much to say but at the same time I Dont need to put pressure on myself to have the right words for a day like this. Within the last three years there were many chances I won’t be celebrating this birthday. I came close many times to thinking my child would be without a mother and advocate. That truly is what I am celebrating today above all else. As a child refugee I learnt that life is fragile especially at the intersect of health, disability and systematic marginalisation in the last two years that became clearer. I Dont want anything more in life than to have the opportunity to raise my child to the best of my ability, fight for the disability accommodations and support they need to thrive. A gentle reminder, social media is superficial and only shows our highlights. We are all a mess doing the best we can. Most of us feel like children masquerading as adults. No one has it figured out. Don’t let social media make you discontent with your life and determine your worth. Your life outside of social media is important. It is impact over attention for me! Impact is what I seek. I leave you with none of us are defined by any singular one thing. It’s the sum of who we are and our stories, our strengths, our wins and our losses that make us who we are. Cheers to 36! My hands are up in gratitude for all your support and solidarity. Gratitude for life! It is privilege to celebrate this birthday and to grow old. Many are not afforded this from Palestine to Sudan. I think of them today and everyday day. We are not free until we are all free! Food, cake and presents! 🎁 Pic @alicehealyphotographer Makeup @unveilthebeauty123 #birthday #blackandautistic #explorepage #positivity #instagood

🦋Non Speaking does not mean no communication🦋 👌🏽 I chose to write about non speaking episodes in my children’s book ‘I’m Autistic & I’m Phenomenal’ because there’s a misunderstanding that a person who is non speaking is non verbal, has no way to communicate when in reality there are many ways, drawing ✍🏽, writing things down ✍🏽, texting 💬, sign language 🤟🏽& there are many many AAC apps for adults and also kid friendly ones, AAC apps are augmentative/alternative communication programs that allow a person to communicate with those around them without speaking 🙏🏽 it’s important for these things to be normalized & not only familar to #autistic children their families & other non speaking people ❤️❤️❤️ #nonspeaking #nonverbal #autismacceptance #autismacceptancemonth #autistic #autisticwomen #autismingirls #blackandautistic #autisticandblack #blackbabybooks #autisticart #autisticcreator #autisticcreatives #blackcreatives #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurospicy #asd #autismadvocate #autismadvocacy #autismadvocates #illustration #illustrator #childrensbooks #kidlitart

i posted about this on my close friends story, but i wanted to discuss something that's currently happening in my life: losing friends. ☁️ it's been really hard to find my place in everything again after i lost these people. and convincing myself that getting away from these people would be worth it was hard, it really was. but i'm quite relieved that it ended, and i'm lucky to still have people that show me that friendships can be rewarding, despite how badly my track record is with them due to my communication differences (and trauma, but that's for a different time, lol). 🤍 how does making friends go for you if you're autistic? 🦈 #autism #autismacceptance #asd #autisticadult #autizzy #blackandautistic #autismspectrum #autismawareness #autisticpride #autisticwhileblack #autisticandtrans #transautistic #neuroqueer #autismspectrumdisorder #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurospicy #actuallyautistic

Thank you for the feature @a_moment_of_me 🫶🏿❤️ #repost @a_moment_of_me Khadija Gbla is a human rights activist, TEDx speaker, mentor, coach, model and content creator, is a real powerhouse. They are warm, friendly and generous with their time as they told us their story about finally finding the space and safety to declare their disability at the age of 34. Having escaped Africa to the safety of Australia with their mother in the early 2000s, Khadija wasn’t afforded the luxury of acknowledging their disability. But recently, they shared their experience coming out of the disability closet with ABC Everyday. Positive role models can be hard to find in a society dominated by ableism and as an individual with a platform, Khadija understands the power of representation and revealing your true self to the world. In claiming their disability and choosing to tell their story, their way, they are providing a strong example to others living with disability who may not yet have found their voices, including their own son. The following words/excerpts are by Khadija Gbla, as told to Carol Raabus for ABC Everyday: “I am disabled. I said those words for the first time last year. It took me 34 years to be able to have the space, the opportunity, the safety to give that to myself and say I am disabled. My mum had no room in her refugee experience for disability. She didn’t have room to have an imperfect child. I learnt to prove I wasn’t defective, to prove I have worth, to prove I was worth saving and bringing to Australia, to prove that I was worthy to be loved as a child, as a daughter. When my son was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, it was like the word disability, the word that was banned in my childhood, banned from my home, this unsaid word, came rushing in. I am the mother I wish I’d had and I’m grieving for little Khadija and what she didn’t get. So I gave myself what I gave my child, I am reparenting little Khadija. I think for me the first thing was owning the word disabled. To go out into the world and say I am proud of who I am, take me or leave it. I’m here and I will take up space. I will be seen and I’ll be heard.” link in bio.

I have a new library card, a dental clean, IUD removal and adhd medication appointments all organized and booked. Last month I finally picked up my glasses after 6 months + of waiting. I have put these appointments off for so long due to my caring role and burnout. I have had no capacity to have my most essential needs met as I am in survival mode. Grateful for the functional capacity to meet my needs today! To get some needed dopamine I will do my birthday wish list. My birthday is on the 26 April. Crashed! I don’t want to talk for the rest of the day! Hello situational mutism and pda! Support needs fluctuate because Autism is a dynamic disability. As a level 3 Autistic those changes happen second to second, minute to minute and hour to hour for me. My Autistic/adhd/cptsd/anxiety/ brain loves what it can control and hates what it can’t control. Control - regulated No control - unregulated. I hate any interference with my autonomy and I hate demands. Hello Pervasive Drive for Autonomy. Appointments are giant demands. Instructions from those appointments are giant demands. Time for a dark room, soothing sound, cuddle with my Gbla bear and no talking for a while to recharge. No spoons left! I bought Gbla Bear at an opshop this week. ❤️ #blackandautistic #blackandautisticlivesmatter #blacklivesmatter #autisticlivesmatter #racism #asd #autism #policebrutality #blackautisticlivesmatter #love #photooftheday #picoftheday #bestoftheday #instagood #explorepage #viral #positivity

To mark Autism Awareness Month, here's a reflection piece I wrote for Broadcast @broadcastnow_mbi 'Autism is NOT an on-screen entertainment fix. When we consider fictional characters like The Big Bang Theory’s - Sheldon Cooper, Wednesday from the Addams Family or one-off unscripted format’s like The Assembly, there is a trap of only being comfortable with a comically curated and produced concept of autism; overlooking the trivialised lived realities when the cameras stop rolling.' I said what I said. 👩🏽‍💻[LINK TO FULL ARTICLE IN BIO] #thisisteecee #autismawarenessmonth #broadcast

April is Autism Acceptance Month! At BKBC, we’re all about active inclusion, so we use the term “acceptance” instead of “awareness”. Just knowing something does little for moving toward full inclusion. You can teach kids about autism through books, of course! Shout out to Holly Robinson Peete, Black actress and author of two books about her twins, one diagnosed with autism. Swipe to the last page for a QR code to see more books for children of all ages to help us celebrate AAM! ••••••••••••••••••••••••••• FACT: Black children are diagnosed with autism later than their white counterparts, limiting access to early supports and interventions that can better prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. #blackauthors #blackkidsbooks #autismawareness #autism #autismacceptance #blackvoicesmatter #autisticvoicesmatter #blackandautistic

Learning to embrace visibility. One aspect of my autism is that any form of perception, be it positive or negative, triggers severe anxiety in me and leads me to conceal myself. I’ve concealed my true self for more than a decade, but now I’m choosing to reveal my existence without the constant worry of doing everything perfectly. I’m opening up space for mistakes and letting people witness them without caring about judgment. #autismawareness #blackandautistic #grunge #fallvibes #neurodivergent #autisticwomen

As a Black autistic individual, I carry the weight of two intersecting identities. The world often perceives me through the lens of stereotypes: the “Angry Black Woman” and the “Autistic resting bitch face.” But let me tell you, my emotions are valid, my expressions are mine, and my existence defies these narrow narratives. 🌟 “Unmasking My Truth”🌟 In a world that tries to silence me, I rise. My face, etched with resilience, holds stories untold. When I wear my “resting bitch face,” it’s not anger—it’s armor. A shield forged from years of navigating a society that misunderstands me. They say I’m too intense, too fierce. But they don’t see the battles I fight within. The weight of expectations, the struggle to fit into neurotypical molds. My silence isn’t hostility; it’s contemplation—a symphony of thoughts and feelings. And when they label me “angry,” I reclaim that anger. It’s not rage; it’s passion—the fire that fuels my advocacy. I dismantle stereotypes, brick by brick, with every word I speak, every truth I share. So here’s to the Black women who defy expectations, who wear their emotions unapologetically. To the Autistic souls with resting faces that hold galaxies. We are not broken; we are beautifully complex. We are imperfectly perfect! I am proud to be Black and Autistic. #blackandautistic #blackandautisticlivesmatter #blacklivesmatter #autisticlivesmatter #racism #asd #autism #policebrutality #blackautisticlivesmatter #love #photooftheday #picoftheday #bestoftheday #instagood #explorepage #viral #positivity

Proud mama of two autistic little ones who deserve to exist and thrive in a world that values who they are EXACTLY the way they are. My son PB likes to read, play Minecraft, and he loves to draw. His favorite thing to draw right now are logos. I put some of his actual art on the wall behind him in the illustration 🥹. My daughter J is my little songbird with a beautiful singing voice. She enjoys carrying around her purse full of animal cards and being in nature (ALL the time lol). Back in the day I had an IG account sharing my little ones journey with autism and everything we were learning together along the way. Introvert me didn’t love it, and I quickly learned that the internet can be absolute 🗑️. While I burnt out on constantly sharing my babies, I’m super grateful for the special needs families and #actuallyautistic people who take the time to educate and share their life. I figured that drawing could be a cool introvert friendly way to share our lives here and there. —- #autismfamilies #ilovesomeonewithautism #ausomekid #blackandautistic #autismacceptancemonth #autismawarenessmonth #cartoonstyle #cartoonart #blackcreative #cartoony #illustratorsofinstagram #illustrationartists #blackillustrators #blackcartoonist #blackcreatives #blackgirlmagic #cartoonists #cartoonist #blackdigitalartist #graphicnovel #middlegradeillustration #kidlitart #kidlitillustration #blackdigitalartist #middlegradebooks

I was diagnosed with level 3 Autism in 2022 twice! My therapist said I couldn’t be Autistic because I studied a double degree, run my own business, never miss an appointment (many reminders), raising a child who is also level 3 plus many other conditions and disabilities etc. I told them it is not my job to fit your rigid view of Autism now administer the damn assessment. They did and it was conclusive level 3 Autism but they refuse to give me a report so l had to be assessed a second time just to get my report and again conclusive Autism level 3. I am an award winning human rights activist but I asked my social worker to be present for the second assessment. I am a Black Indigenous nonbinary person I am not the default! My diagnosis was the exception for my community and that is heart breaking and why I chose to forgo my privacy to not only raise awareness but to champion intersectionality and representation! Autism is a dynamic disability! My needs fluctuates hour to hour and day to day. I don’t fit into boxes, I smash them! #repost @beyondneurowalls Did you know what the differences where? this is a very long post, and i'm sorry for it – but we have a lot to say. ✏️ (and as a note, we are referring to our alters with nicknames in this post. these are not their actual names, but we don't feel totally comfortable with having everyone know their names just yet.) today's post is one i've been planning on making for a while, but i didn't have the effort to pull it off until recently – one about living at the intersection of both autism and DID. i post about it semi-often on my stories, and this is a longform response to these common questions. 💭 do you have any questions related to this topic? feel free to post them in the comments or send a message, and i will answer what i feel comfortable with. happy friday yall 🦈🌿 #autism #autismacceptance #asd #autisticadult #autizzy #blackandautistic #autismspectrum #autismawareness #autisticpride #autisticwhileblack #autisticandtrans #transautistic #neuroqueer #autismspectrumdisorder #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurospicy #actuallyautistic #dissociativeidentitydisorder #otherwisespecifieddissociativedisorder #osdddid #didsystem

I felt guilty about being Autistic because I couldn’t meet the needs of my friends and family. This included understanding their emotional needs, in terms of knowing when they’re feeling low or content. As a result, there have been multiple occasions when I unintentionally got into confrontations due to being unable to understand their behaviour.⁣ 😣 ⁣ Additionally, I felt guilty for having people endure my awkwardness because I either couldn’t formulate a sentence or struggled to know when to get involved in conversations. This often made them resent my presence due to not meeting their social norm standards. As a result, for my many friendships and acquaintanceships, I accepted them isolating me due to believing that I was bringing bad energy into their circle.⁣ ⁣ However, it’s only been recently that I started to feel more comfortable within myself. It’s a slow process of reprogramming my thoughts, but I can finally say that there are moments when I don’t feel guilty for being Autistic. This is because I’ve learnt to accept that all of these qualities are a part of who I am and if someone doesn’t accept my boundaries or my Autistic self, then they’re not worthy of being in my presence. ⁣ ⁣ My main message is that you should never feel obliged to change or accept your boundaries being pushed to be accepted into a social group. You’re worthy of experiencing friendships and acquaintanceships that make you feel whole rather than deflated.⁣ ✨ ⁣ #autistic #autism #autismacceptanceeek #WAAW #autismacceptance #autisminwomen #autismingirls #blackandautistic

I am over Autism month already and it is day 3. I Dont know how I will survive the damn month. I post about Autism everyday on different platforms and support other Autistics Something about non autistic people watching us for a month feels voyueristic. Who wants to be so perceived? For some of our community members this include a increase in bullying and not feeling safe! It’s triggering my pathological demand avoidance. Now I feel like AutismAcceptanceMonth is a giant demand! why should we have to do so much labour? Shouldnt non Autistic people be the one doing the labour? Autistic people already have so much on our plate already We are all in burnouts in one form or another. So once this month is over, do we just go back to being bullied, made to feel unseen, invalidated, demonized and for some of us killed like precious Ryan Gainer? Actions speak louder than words! I want equal rights. I want to not worry I will get killed because I am having an autistic meltdown or my child is not getting the support they deserve at school or the Ndis targetting my Autistic participants and not protecting them from abuse or any of the other million systematic discrimination and everyday biases.
