Red River Road is the new psychological thriller from Anna Downes and it is intense! It had me staying up way too late to find out where it would end. Solo traveller Katy is trying to find her missing sister Phoebe, who disappeared along the WA coast a year ago. Following the route she believes her sister was taking, Katy soon realises that things are not as they appeared on Phoebe’s Instagram posts and that perhaps there were secrets that her sister didn’t share. As she heads into the remote wilds in her campervan she discovers she is not as alone as she first thought and the paranoia and fear begins to mount. Perhaps the truth is darker than Katy could have imagained? Wow, this book was dramatic and fast moving and I spent most of it with my heart in my throat. Everyone was under suspicion and not to be trusted and I was getting creepy Wolf Creek vibes as I sped through this wild tale. Definitely not a book to read while on a solo trip, but one which will have you questioning everything and rethinking posting that next holiday selfie. Anna Downes has written an action packed and twisty psychological thriller which is shocking in its brilliance and I will now be delving back into Anna’s previous books to see what I’ve been missing. 🌟 BOOK REVIEW 🌟 THE ALONE TIME By Elle Marr ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️ Suspenseful. Wild. Unsettling. It's been 25 years since Fiona and Violet survived the small private plane crash that took their parents' lives. They were just children at the time but miraculously managed to fend for themselves in the woods for three whole months before they were rescued. The harrowing experience changed the girls forever, but not in the way you might expect. The bond between the sisters was broken beyond repair when they left the wilderness with some deep, dark secrets about what really happened during their "Alone Time." Doesn't the premise of this one sound so enticing? So original? For the first half of the book, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. The suspense was alluring and intense - I just had to know what happened after the crash! Unfortunately, it did lose me a little along the way, and I was left scratching my head in bewilderment by the end. 🙃 I don't want to give too much away here, but I feel it's important to also mention that when handling sensitive topics such as mental illness, writers need to be well informed, and very careful, appropriate and respectful in the way in which they portray particular disorders. THE ALONE TIME was offered as an Amazon Prime First Reads option last month, so I'm really looking forward to reading all the reviews that are sure to start rolling in! Overall, if you're a fan of twisted survival stories, wilderness thrillers, and the movie Alive, you might enjoy this one. Early Sobrieties by Michael Deagler (Out now, thank you @astrahousebooks @netgalley for the #gifted ARC) I am sober. I’m not as early in my sobriety as Dennis Monk, the main character in Michael Deagler’s Early Sobrieties, but I can definitely relate to many of the experiences Dennis encounters in his first year of sobriety. After his parents ask him and his brother to move out the novel follows Dennis as he moves from couch to couch in Philadelphia, making sobriety his sole focus. The structure of the book feels a bit like short stories; they are firmly connected through Dennis and a few recurring characters, but each chapter places Dennis in different situations and settings as he inches closer to the one year sober mark. Normally I might be put off by this style but it brilliantly fed into the unmoored feeling of being newly sober. The feeling of separating yourself from the thing you have centered your life around (in this case alcohol) is so well represented by Monk’s movement from place to place, never settling anywhere, just drifting around trying to find somewhere to anchor. At the same time, it creates a sense that a steady anchor isn’t necessary because really all that matters is the present. I sometimes talk about books that have the ability to evoke not only thoughts but feelings and this one does both. Undoubtedly some of the feeling for me comes from a personal connection to the story, but I’m sure some of it is more universal. The depths of emotion Deagler pens faithfully depict the highs and lows of life, which is the gift many get when they decide to stop using their substance of choice and feel their feelings. It’s definitely been that way for me. I appreciate that this depicts a journey to sobriety outside of the 12 steps which is often centered in recovery stories. It reinforces the fact that journeys to sobriety are as individual and different as the people taking them and regardless of the path there are still shared threads of common experience. It also depicts the reality that sober people still have to figure out how to exist in the world; just because a person changes doesn’t mean the environment they exist in has. (Continued)

Spiritual gifts belong to our dharma, the highest version of our life and how we're meant to serve. Unfortunately, there's no glossary with the name of the wound on one side and the potential strength or gift it represents on the other. It might take some digging and contemplation and watching yourself over time to see it more clearly (especially if, like me, you came in multi-gifted and experienced the pain of having to discern which should be the real points of focus). But there's a reason you're able to perceive an injustice where you do, and why you experienced the hurt where you did and in the precise shape that you did. Study the shape of the injury and how it appears over time. The wound has created a shape that you're able to respond to, like the interlocking edge of a puzzle piece. Another way to put this is: what are you most sensitive to? Another way to put this is: your perceived "weaknesses" also contain your greatest strengths. What killed you, Achilles? That's where you were most receptive to something. It's the thing you can see that others can't. This is why it's important that we all honour our own unique gifts for where we are called to take action in the world. Action demands a payment of your body, time, and energy. Where you're struggling the most is likely also the site of what you're here to bring. Studying the patterns of our dreams can help with this. Intensive journaling. Just watching yourself over time, really. ✨️ BOOK REVIEW ✨️ This was a good debut novel! It started out fairly slow for me, but I quickly got pulled into the story and wanted to know if May was going to unravel the mystery of what happened to June and to their mom. I liked that we got June's POV through the letters she was writing to her mom and that we got some chapters from their moms POV. Sam was my favorite character! May was likable, but I didn't really connect with her too much. The ending was quite twisty but left me with a few questions. 📚 The Original Twin by Paula Gleeson publishes on June 1, 2024! 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘴 by Rachel Khong [ Thanks to @prhaudio for the complimentary audiobook, and @aaknopf @netgalley for the e-arc! #gifted ] The way I had no chill in anticipation of this book that I needed all 3 formats immediately. 😂 I started this one on audio and read in tandem with the ebook which I was glad to have to go back and reference, but of course I still needed a copy for my shelf. Real Americans asks, if you could shape your own destiny, would you? How far would you go? Split into three parts (and the audio with three narrators!) between Mei, a Chinese immigrant who fled Mao's Cultural Revolution in the 1960's, her daughter Lily who met and fell in love with someone despite their opposite backgrounds, and Lily's son Nick who passes as white but navigates being biracial in America, all the while questioning his own identity. Each part was so distinct, they felt like separate books until they started to come together. I loved how each of their experiences contrasted each other's in some ways, and ran parallel in others. It made me reflect on how much of our identity is tied to our DNA, how much to experience, and how much is left up to chance. And if you had the ability to edit your identity, where would you draw the line. I was really intrigued by the magical realism aspect, and wished there had been more details; though I liked that it still made sense to the story without oveshadowing the characters. I have yet to read Khong's debut novel Goodbye, Vitamin, but it is now solidly on my list. 🙌 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🗨 Do you read in multiple formats? What's your go-to?

🤯AND THEN, BOOM!💥 This book, this author’s verse, and the narrator’s voice, and Joe’s story and how he tells it… boom! It’s in my top of April Poetry month and already in my top (that I never really make) of powerful, poignant, important middle grade books this year. I mentioned already that it made me feel all the feelings, right? I happen to be going through a few “booms” myself, but nothing like this kid. This gripping novel has one of the strongest kids I have ever read. Powering through no matter what, poverty, grief, some sorts of bullying even. The struggles kids should never have to live through, but unfortunately do. I loved the connections and self-made therapy Joe made of superheroes. This is a beautiful and positive novel-in-verse that will engage you and possibly inspire you to engage in your own community. (Also, I’m a gardener, so I fell in love with the cover as soon as I saw it! It even inspired me to try a few new flowers in my garden!) Isabel is from the Philippines, but her mother migrated to the United States before her to find employment. Isabel lives with her grandparents in the Philippines until her mother has established herself enough to bring her over to the United States. The story begins in the Philippines and transitions to California in the United States with Isabel’s big move to reunite with her mother. She holds onto her memories of gardening and cooking with her grandparents, Lolo and Lola. This is what leads her to join the cooking club and to start the gardening club at her new school. She finds a connection to home with one of the trees that is actually native to the Philippines. This inspires her to clean up her school’s old garden, especially after she hears that the elders in the community used to enjoy it. I loved the positivity in this story. A big move and reunification with a mother she rarely got to see is a tough situation for a 12 year old. But she is surrounded by loving, encouraging and positive characters from the people she is staying with in California to her teacher to the friends she makes at school. While there are conflicts that Isabel has to deal with, the community in her life outweighs them. New Review. #gifted #ad My stop for @kaleidoscopictours for Your Time Is Up by Sarah Naughton. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. Zaina is driven by the need to succeed to keep a promise to her recently deceased father that she will focus all her energy on getting top marks in her exams, securing her place at university and achieving a high-paying successful career. She has sacrificed her social life and relationships with family and friends for this goal. Zaina has only one maths paper left to complete before her A-levels are finished but her unhealthy rivalry with her fellow top scoring students coupled with the ongoing fallout from her best friends’ betrayal, finally starts to take its toll. As the exam progresses Zaina is pulled into the disappearance of a fellow student called Chanelle and the illegal plans to cheat in the exam of another student. On top of this she is unable to stop reliving the memory of what led her to ending her friendships after a recent party as well as flashing back to clues as to what might have happened to Chanelle. Will Zaina risk her academic future to assist a rival, will she follow the clues to the truth about what is happening in her school or will she keep her head down and focus on the exam ignoring the dangers and mysteries around her? 🌟🌟🌟🌟This certainly was a read in one sitting kind of story. I liked the use of the ticking clock in the exam to represent the pressurised experience both in the exam and with the unfolding events in the present day. The use of flashbacks with that allowed the reader to see what occurred to bring the main characters to where they are now and to understand their motivations. The feeling of stress and the tunnelled mindset that exams can create was perfectly expressed in the story adding a heightened intention to the narrative. I felt for Zaina as she dealt with the pressures of making her dad proud by striving to be best at all her subjects while also coping with the hurt and loneliness her friends have caused her. It was an interesting YA thriller and I wasn’t quite sure where the story was going but I was intrigued to find out.
