There’s much more to this, and these are some reasons why Autism can go unidentified in female-identified folks. Girls and women are socialized especially to follow certain norms. This can be expectations around smiling, pleasing others, etc. Many learn quickly that certain behavior and ways of relating aren’t considered acceptable (e.g. being direct and honest, not smiling and/or making eye contact, fidgeting). Masking is often occurring in an attempt to be accepted, not face punishment, form relationships. This contributes to many not picking up what that girl might be experiencing and all the effort she is expending to mask. And, some special interests can be socially accepted and non-stereotypical (such as interest in other people, which is common in part due to wanting to figure out humans like a puzzle). Unfortunately, many women have gone unidentified for decades in part due to lack of understanding by providers, educators, parents about Autism and neurodivergence, in general, for those who are not cis men/boys. “There’s a lot to untangle” ✨ I am receiving the most amazing messages from other adults who have figured out they’re autistic, with internalised PDA, and trauma of the possibly OCD variety. This is all blowing my mind. I feel I am getting closer and closer to understanding the truth of my life. The ‘spooky’ stuff I have always had in my life has never quite fit the psychosis/ schizophrenia bill. But it feels in that realm. And I’m starting to realise that it’s very probably OCD. Layer upon layer upon layer. How unbelievable it is to me that we can live/survive SO many years with no name, no language, no framework, no tools, no knowledge, no expert help. No wonder so many of us don’t make it. 😶 My body feels safer than it ever has these past 24 hours, because I have asked for help and the cavalry came. Because I have space for the first time in my life. No demands. Freedom. I have been signed off work for 2 weeks by the GP. It’s been a loooooong time coming. And it’s not under the radar. My boss, my colleagues, my team all know it’s long term mental ill health. If anyone thinks I am not going to talk openly about this, they have another think coming. I’m going to Glastonbury, alone, for 3 nights today. I have always wanted to go there, on my own, for no reason. I am staying in a little barn in a garden where sheep wander around and look in the door. I may go outside, I may not. I may walk up the hill, I may not. I may do some yoga, I may not. I may swim in the owner’s pool, I may not. I will very likely write, post, talk to myself, dance around to all kinds of music. I will probably do Tension Releases Exercises because my body is finally letting go. I will sleep, I will dream and I will listen to the dreams. The feeling of being “too much” is a tough, painful one. You might have felt this from childhood experiences with family, at school, in friendships. Sometimes that message of being too much is internalized and becomes a belief we hold about ourselves. We all have needs. This is actually about the problem of misdiagnosis, misinformation, the pathologizing of differences, the importance of identity and ego development… and so many other things. I went through such a shitty journey of misdiagnosis from a young age, being put on so many different psych meds, feeling so damaged and depressed and suizidal (and I have white and middle class privilege) Then I had kids, learned about adhd and autism. Felt a little bit better. I’m just different, not damaged. Then I learned about giftedness and 2e and it opened Pandora’s box and completely shifted my relationship to myself and my chaotic inner experience. I went from wondering what was wrong with me to now knowing there’s nothing wrong with me and a whole lot of things that need to change in our society. The “gifted” label is still super taboo, like many DSM labels, the difference is that one actually empowers people… (yeah yeah, they can both be empowering, but one prefers to keep people thinking their sick when really their environment has just failed them terribly). And whether or not you’re “actually” whatever label you prefer or have been given, you’re an amazing being, first. Like many autistics of a certain age, I have been conditioned to hide my passions. Between 75% and 95% of autistic folks have what are known as "special interests". These intense, focused interests have been pathologized and often parodied. If you were asked to imagine a stereotypical autistic child, you might be forgiven for picturing a (white) boy monologuing about trains while everyone around him rolls their eyes and backs away. (In case there's any doubt: trains rock 🚂🤘🏻) Engaging with special interests can bring the autistic person relief from anxiety, increased self-esteem, and a sense of delight approximating joy, especially when we can share the interest with others. Conversely, not being able to access the special interest causes distress. Being shamed for the intensity of our interests and having the interest itself judged as "weird" or "nonproductive", can lead us to suppress this integral part of ourselves, resulting in anxiety, depression, and disintegration. April is #autismawarenessmonth. To help myself heal from a lifetime of masking my autism, I made a list of all the special interests I've had in my 46 years. (I counted 21 total.) I used the prompts I post here from Devon Price's terrific book, Unmasking Autism. For the last three years, my special interest has been the 1945 🇬🇧 novel, Brideshead Revisited. I read the book and watch the sumptuous 1981 TV adaptation over and over. At any given moment, there's a good chance I'm suppressing a desire to talk about Brideshead's themes of queer love, male friendship, Catholicism, the decay of the English aristocracy, aestheticism, and so on. Currently, I'm formulating three fragrances inspired by this work and writing a fanfiction indulging my romantic crush on main character, Sebastian Flyte. Do you have a special interest?
