I'm a huge proponent of exercise, especially for older people, for all the health and mental benefits that it provides. Exercise is the best physical and mood booster that exists. No pill, no drug, can even touch its manifold benefits in terms of sheer efficacy. I had a medium-serious injury from a half marathon and could barely walk and was in a lot of pain, and my injury was entirely healed in three days because--I believe--of all of the exercise I engage in daily. My Friends! I had some thoughts on the half marathon that I just completed--"Run for the Zoo 2024"--that I wanted to share. Being in any kind of a race at all has been quite an adventure at my age. I think that I grew up with the mindset that any kind of a runner/marathoner/half marathoner was an "extreme" kind of person and that maybe such extremes in personality/behavior were to avoided in the interests of "balance" (whatever the heck THAT is?) and sanity. Suddenly, I find myself as part of one of those "fringe" groups that I avoided when I was younger though I'm doing only 13.1 miles, NOT hundreds of miles. For me, "extreme behavior," even on this miniscule scale, feels absolutely GRAND. At the age of sixty-six, I find myself enjoying a plethora of reignited ambitions in athletics, visual art, and writing, NOT necessarily in that order. The half marathon almost killed me. And, yeah, I'm injured. SO WHAT????????? I'm on fire!!!! We oldsters can BE on fire!!!! I'm more passionate about my life than I was in my twenties. Wherever your finish line is, fellow oldsters, go, go, GO!!! We can do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We can embrace our lives with the utmost fervor and passion and JOY in just BEING ALIVE!!!! Two years ago, my endocrinologist said pretty much these exact words to me: "It's almost impossible to put on any muscle at your age, so don't be hopeful. Also, use Barbie weights ONLY: two-five pounders. Under no circumstances should you lift OVER ten pounds. You will probably break a bone if you do. Also, if you fall down at all, you will probably break your hip and die."" Apparently I am not good at following directions. I was sixty-four then. I'm sixty-six now. Today I lifted a ninety-pound barbell. I also rowed for four hours. And completed two hours of strength training, including forty-pound overhead dumbbell presses. I'm 4'10."
