📚 Book review - Grief is the thing with feathers by Max Porter Well. I picked this book in the bookstore because I was in love with the cover but I knew very little of it. I just figured there's a crow so it should be good. Turns out i was absolutely correct. It’s the story of two boys and their father who lose their mom/wife and suddenly have to navigate through the grief of a life without her. The chapters are very short and most of them read like poetry. They’re divided between three point of view: The dad, who have to get used to a life without his wife ; his two boys; and a crow who acts like their 'grief counselor'. I have to admit it took me a while to get used to the writing style (it’s a bit ‘experimental’). Some sentences didn’t quite make sense to me, sometimes I was left intrigued and confused, sometimes straight up lost. But then some chapters hit me in all my feelings and I just couldn’t put it down. I really don’t think anything I can say would do Max Porter’s prose justice, but I just wanted you all to know that it’s a very special book and even though I do think it wouldn’t be right for everyone, I took the liberty of tagging some friends who I think could love it just as much as I did? Leaving you with a quote I loved: ’Moving on, as a concept, is for stupid people, because any sensible person knows grief is a long-term project. I refuse to rush. The pain that is thrust upon us let no man slow or speed or fix.’

Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter is weird and experimental and I'd expect nothing less - this is Porter's debut but for some reason I've only got to it years after reading and loving his second novel Lanny. After the sudden death of beloved wife and mother, a human size crow comes to stay with the remaining widower (a Ted Hughes scholar) and his two young sons to distract / annoy / help them through their initial months of grief. Crow is raucous, naughty and inconvenient, but somehow it does seem to help by the end. The book is really short. I read it in a strange period whilst off sick, so I didn't necessarily enjoy the experience - naturally given the subject matter there just wasn't the joy I found in Lanny here - but I applaud his creativity. It made me think about human and animals, our responses to tragedy. Perhaps it's inevitable to want to escape the worst hyper-reality imaginable with a dose of unreality, embracing the bizarre and uncanny.  Maybe a giant foul-mouthed crow might just be the temporary ticket out of the darkest depths of despair... Please tell me your thoughts if you've read this - and I'd also love to hear about any good books you put off reading for far too long #griefisthethingwithfeathers #crow #maxporter

Just finished reading this. Grief personified as a crow to help a father & two sons cope with the loss of their wife/mother. It was an unusual read, the prose took some getting used to but it definitely touched on stages of grief in often humourous ways. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ . #Book #Books #Bookstagram #Bookish #Paperback #Bookworm #Read #Reads #Reading #CurrentRead #CurrentlyReading #GriefIsTheThingWithFeathers #MaxPorter #Grief #Prose

In “Grief Is The Thing With Feathers” by Max Porter, a father of two young boys is trying to process the unexpected/accidental death of his wife. He tried to work through the grief and figure out how he and his kids can exist in the aftermath of her death. Filled with despair, they are visited by a supernatural/dreamlike character called “Crow”. Although Crow’s intentions are somewhat unclear at first, he end up helping the father and his kids work through their grief. From the very beginning i was taken in by Porter’s evocative and raw writing style — and this continued to the last page. Overall this was a very moving and visceral portrayal of what it’s like to experience loss and with an excellent narration by Jot Davies I almost felt some Neil Gaiman vibes (with the narrator’s accent, and the story’s symbolism and fantastical elements). Thanks @nonfictionfervor for the recommendation! 🙏 #GriefIsTheThingWithFeathers #MaxPorter #JotDavies

Loss is hard. Grief is hard. Invisible grief is harder. Grief doesnt always show up because of a death. There are many losses that throw people into grief without them or others even noticing! Lost jobs, children moving out, or even being someone who does not “normally get emotional” are reasons someone’s grief may go unnoticed or not be taken seriously. This can leave the person feeling invisible. The lack of validation is a very heavy load to carry alone. This is what we refer to as disenfranchised grief, and there could be a million reasons someone is experiencing it. Without being publicly acknowledged or socially validated, the griever feels lonely and isolated in their sorrow. As therapists, our job is to help clients: 🖤 name their grief 🖤 understand it is valid, 🖤 support them through it. I encourage you all to take some time to reflect on your understanding of grief, especially disenfranchised grief. 🤔 Are you equipped to recognize the signs of grief in your clients? 💫As I'm journeying through understanding how colonialism has shaped my worldview, I've been really leaning into embracing grief. You might notice I talk about it a lot on my account because it's such a big part of moving forward and staying present. When you feel disappointed, it's like you're not stuck on some picture-perfect outcome you had in mind. It's about recognizing that maybe your needs weren't met by the people you care about or by society. Feeling the right amount of sadness and anger when you're disappointed means letting those emotions flow through you, really feeling them in your body, and letting them pass. When we bottle up our feelings, it can show up as blaming others, holding grudges, being easily annoyed, or having really intense mood swings. And that disconnects us from others and even from ourselves. But when we give ourselves permission to grieve, it's like this whole new world of being fully present opens up. And that brings so much more opportunity and freedom into our lives. 🌳Don't forget this Sunday I am co-hosting a workshop just for AAPI individuals. It offers the AAPI community a valuable opportunity to delve into their experiences of grief while navigating their sense of belonging. And just a heads up, tickets are still available for purchase!

Very much looking forward to reading these stunning @faberbooks editions. @maxmaxporter Is high on my list of new authors to dive into. Thankyou @nonfictionfervor and @thewrittenroute for making my decision to start. Shy: This is the story of a few strange hours in the life of a troubled teenage boy. You mustn’t do that to yourself Shy. You mustn’t hurt yourself like that. He is wandering into the night listening to the voices in his head: his teachers, his parents, the people he has hurt and the people who are trying to love him. Lanny: Not far from London, there is a village. This village belongs to the people who live in it and to those who lived in it hundreds of years ago. It belongs to England’s mysterious past and its confounding present. It belongs to families dead for generations, and to those who have only recently moved here, such as the boy Lanny, and his mum and dad. Grief Is the Thing with Feathers: In a London flat, two young boys face the unbearable sadness of their mother’s sudden death. Their father, a Ted Hughes scholar and scruffy romantic, imagines a future of well-meaning visitors and emptiness. In this moment of despair they are visited by Crow - antagonist, trickster, healer, babysitter. This sentimental bird is drawn to the grieving family and threatens to stay until they no longer need him. The Death of Francis Bacon: Madrid. Unfinished. Man dying. A great painter lies on his deathbed. In seven extraordinary written pictures, untethered from reality, Max Porter translates the explosive final workings of the artist’s mind. #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #book #bookish #bookcommunity #bookphotography #bookcover #bookclub #bookaesthetic #bookcollector #maxporter #thedeathoffrancisbacon #shy #lanny #griefisthethingwithfeathers #goodreads #truckingatnight #fiction #literature #faberbooks

I finished #TheAxemansCarnival by @catherinechidgey on the West coast of Australia- a long way from the Otago highlands of Aotearoa New Zealand where it’s set. The story is told from the point of view of Tama, a rescued magpie chic nursed by Marnie, who works at a local store, longs for a baby and is married to sheep farmer and titular axeman Rob. Tama is keenly observant, learns to mimic humans, a trickster and a smart arse. Through Tama we learn the house that shelters him is one of strain, apprehension and violence. This book is one of gloriously spectacular storytelling, memorable not only for the magpie narrator, but the clever juxtaposition of old farming ways with new technology and the delicate balance that always breaks the horror of domestic abuse with gleaming shards of humour. This is a novel for readers who loved #OnlyTheAnimals by #CeridwenDovey and #GriefIsTheThingWithFeathers by #MaxPorter (continuing the tradition of smart animals and birds) but also anyone who just loves a rollicking domestic rural yarn well-told 🪶 #books #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #amreading #Aotearoalit #fiction #bookrec

The silver lining of suffering with migraines and having to stay off screens is the time I've had to read - I managed to finish the top 3 books in the last 24hrs (reviews to come when I'm less 🥴😵‍💫😴), I'm halfway through Grief is the Thing with Feathers, and when I want something different I'm enjoying the short stories of A Manual for Cleaning Women and bits of the - very important and topical - non-fic book How to Do Nothing. Nr. 14 Kamilė🦋 : 2/5 ⭐️ ........ [EN] Got this book from my roommate and thought it would be a quick read, considering it only consists of about 115 pages, so I gave it a try yesterday. I did read it in about an hour, however, I did not like the book that much. Grief is a natural response, when losing a loved one. Here, it was the mother of the two boys, the wife of their dad. In "Grief is the thing with feathers", grief is embodied in a Crow. The whole book rotates between the Crow, dad and the boys perspective. From all of their perspectives, the only one that was clear enough for me to understand, was the boys. Other than that, I could not tell you what I was reading, because almost nothing made sense or was super unclear to read. Sad to say, that this book was probably the worst read this year (at least so far)😞 . #griefisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter #bookstagram #book #booktok #bookreview #romancebooks #bookrecommendations #booklover #books #bookstagrammer #bookaddict #bookcommunity #knyga #romance #reading #bookrecs #booksireccomend #read #bookstoread #allthebooks #bookdump #photodump #booknerd #booktrend #knygosapžvalga #skaitau

Finished Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter Description: A father and his two young sons find ways to cope with their wife/mother’s sudden death. A crow becomes the mascot of their grief… I guess? Hard to know quite how to describe what the crow is. Liked: It’s a weird take on grief but it does kinda chime. A couple of bits felt very deeply insightful, especially the relationship between the two brothers, and how they process things. I really liked that the crow sort of ended up feeling like a shared family resource. Hard to say more on that without spoiling things! Disliked: I definitely approached this trying to relate it as much as possible to my own experience of grief, which is not a very fair measuring stick, but for this reason I found myself a little disappointed at some of the stuff which felt more specific and personal to the characters, and, I assume, Porter’s own experience. I will stress that this is absolutely NOT a fault of the book, just a downside from my own perspective! Less personally, I found some of the crow’s sections a bit too hard to parse, and could have gone for a bit less in the crow’s voice. Would recommend: a very interesting exploration of grief and family. Business card: Whilst I don’t think this little mascot is a crow, it COULD conceivably be this trickster crow dressed up as a chicken. I think that’s in the spirit of things, here. I got it with a cute sticker from @yas.petit.poulet 🐓 #griefisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter #fiction #books #bookstagram #novel #novels #review #bookreview #bookreviews #igreads #instabook #instabooks #booklover #bookishcommunity

From spring to late fall, crows are extremely territorial and will defend their family’s home turf against much larger predators and competition. In the winter, they spend their nights huddled together in large roosts; and Portland’s roost is particularly massive – about 15,000 crows nightly at its peak. This roosts help ensure their survival when days are short, resources are scarce, and threat levels are high. Solo birds and murders begin to arrive before sunset, flying in from all directions. It is a raucous affair as they gather, vocalize, and engage in flight displays. By the time it gets dark, the crows are settled into the buildings, bridges, and trees and it gets eerily quiet until just before dawn when they depart to forage for the day. This daily migration continues until they return their breeding territories as the weather warms up and days get longer. Portland is currently setting a national example for living with crows in an urban environment. The city is using falconers to haze the crows with small teams of Harris Hawks that push the crows from downtown to greenspaces like the riverfront park where the noise and droppings are not as problematic for downtown businesses. #ProbableCaws #GriefIsTheThingWithFeathers #WhenMurdersTurnIntoHordes #Oregon #Washington #PacificWonderland #PacificNorthwest #TheGreat_PNW #DestinationPNW #PNW_Moods #WashingtonExplored #OregonExplored #ExplOregon #NWAperture #BestOfTheBeaverState #CascadiaExplored #GiffordPinchotNationalForest #CascadeMountains #HikeOregon #OregonCoast #PNWDiscovered #UpperLeftUSA #ChasingWaterfalls #WildSplendOR #PNW #Crow #Crows #PortlandCrowRoost

S H Y by Max Porter 🦡 This is the story of a few strange hours in the life of a troubled teenage boy. He is wandering into the night (and into ponds) listening to the voices in his head: his teachers, his parents, the people he has hurt and the people who are trying to love him. As much as I enjoyed Max Porter’s previous works I have to admit that SHY was not really the novel for me. Whilst I am familiar with Porter’s experimental form I felt as though SHY pushed this particular envelope too far and strayed into the territory of style over substance. I truly feel that this would have worked very beautifully as poetry (Porter’s use of language is undeniably stunning) but personally I found that as prose it felt somewhat forced; the language seemed to me a barrier to empathy - obscuring rather than enlightening. That being said, there is plenty to get stuck into here if you’re a fan of Max Porter but ultimately SHY was not a book that resonated with me as a reader. #bookreview #maxporter #shy #lanny #griefisthethingwithfeathers #supportindependent #indiebookshops

Grief is the thing with Feathers by Max Porter It is difficult to categories this book as it is very unique and not at all what I thought it would be. It is described as psychological fiction, but I also feel that it could be accurate to describe it as a poetry collection. This story is told from the perspective of the Dad and his two sons, as well as a crow that visits the family. This book illustrates, in a really interesting way, how this small family processes the sudden and unexpected death of their wife/mother. It is, at times, confusing, particularly the portions from Crow's perspective, but I loved to see how Crow symbolised the engulfing grief that these characters went through. I felt the most connection to the dad in this story, and found his sections to be the most tragic and upsetting. It was an amazing feat how the author managed to make me feel invested in a character in such a short amount of time. It's a very quick but impactful read and I would encourage anyone to try it! . . . . . #maxporter #griefisthethingwithfeathers #psychologicalfiction #poetry #booksofinstagram #shortbooks #bookishpost #sadbook #sadbooks #readersofinstagram #tbr #bookish #bookrec

Aloha friends, if you could please hold me in your heart during this tender period leading up to my beloved fathers 2 year death anniversary on 3/22 I would be ever so grateful. 🙏🏽 My father in many ways was my best friend and a deep soul ally to me. My dad died tragically fast with a tumultuous thunder, much like his robust Portuguese personality, within a few weeks time. We didn’t know that his life was in danger and wecould potentially lose him till two weeks or so before he died. It was a ginormous shock and trauma for my entire family, especially as he died 4 months after my sweet mother. I am doing a shit ton of inner work now to heal this trauma and other family related wounding. It’s not easy. It would be much easier to distract myself with alcohol or other forms of addictive behavior, (Well, I have bought some cute clothes here and there, but that’s ok right?! 😉) but I know that MY CONTINUAL HEALTH depends on me getting stuck energy & unresolved emotions out of my body. Death anniversaries, birthdays and holidays can be tough when grieving a beloved. That’s just how it is. Grieving is normal and healthy. 💦 In this time period, all sorts of suppressed memories are coming up about what happened two years ago. I am riding the waves of emotional memorial father love. 🏄‍♀️ 🌊 ♥️ Thank you for holding my heart tenderly. ❤️‍🔥🙏🏽❤️‍🔥 Thank you Dad for being such a wonderful, fun, confusing, dramatic, world wind, unpredictable, intelligent, loving, gregarious, adventurous, wild, challenging father who pushed to know I could do whatever I wanted to do if I put my mind to it. Love you forever ❤️‍🔥 This is the family house in Kapa’a where my dad and my grandma grew up in and my cousins now live. 🌺 #fatherlove #fatherlove❤️ #grief #deathanniversary

BOOK REVIEW📖 GRIEF IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS BY MAX PORTER Grief Is The Thing With Feathers is a study in grief and sadness. It is part essay and part poetry-sort of. When I listened to it on audio,I didn’t realise this. I loved how the narrator changed his voice to suit the human beings and the Crow. This is a weird, little book and the narration alters between the Dad who is grieving his wife, the Boys who are grieving their Mother and the Crow who is trying to help them ease through it. A complete picture emerges only after the story progresses to an extent. This was such an odd and fascinating book. I’ve never read anything like it. Even though it’s quite a small book,it took me around 2 to 3 sittings to get through it. It was difficult to comprehend the Crown at times but this is a well written book. It truly is one of a kind. Grief Is The Thing With Feathers • 08.02.24 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book changed things for me. I’ve never read something so bizarre before, the words so random and poetical that they are almost nonsense - except they’re not. My scribbles are all over this book now, and I will almost certainly read it again. ‘Fig Rolls. Dance-offs. Fig Rolls. Patchwork for Beginners. Invisible ink. Chase, I mean, tag, catch, you know. Rope swings. Her dad’s massive hands…’ This books exploration of grief and life is beautiful, gut wrenching, and funny in the hardest way. The last page will stay with me forever. #griefisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter #grief #dark #Crow #poetry #fiction #reading #bookstagram #firstposts

#justread — Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter In a London flat, the mother of two young boys suddenly dies. Their father remains, but the entire family is stricken with a grief that seems impossible and unending. In their bereavement, they are visited by a crow that is attracted to the family’s grief and insists on staying until they no longer need him. And, slowly, they begin to heal. Tightly plotted and well-paced, this is an insightful and poignant examination of mourning. It was a bit unbalanced — I found I wanted more about the kids and less about their father — but the crow metaphor was particularly well done, and the narrative left me thinking about the story for a while afterwards. The book gets a few demerit points for heavily featuring Ted Hughes scholars saying nasty things about Sylvia Plath. But, out of the four Max Porter books I’ve read so far, I’d say this was the best one. Originally published in 2015, this edition was published by @graywolfpress in 2015. I miss this man 💔 My beloved father Stolen away with a harsh and tempestuous blow A dear family friend is going to Tanzania, East Africa with @cheesemansecologysafaris the safari biz my parents started. She will scatter some of their ashes in the place they adored and led safaris to 80+ times. Tonight, I spent time transferring some the beloved ashes of my parents into individual plastic bags labeled ‘Mom’ & ‘Dad’. I still don’t understand. These people that held the root of my foundation daily for my entire life are gone in the blink of an eye. How can that be⁉️ This set forth a wave of tears I have not allowed myself to feel for a long time. There is you Dad. The wound that is still so fresh Stolen away almost two years ago The regrets I have for not being able to save you and hold you together after your queen, my mother died I am a mere mortal, nothing more I cannot stop death in another, even though I temporarily stopped it from stealing my soul. After transferring the ashes, I asked my spirit father for support. He told me to listen to another Kaua’i Hawaii native (like my father) @officializhawaii music My father LOVED IZ 🎵 For years it was all he listened to After my dad died, I claimed his old tattered Bruddah Iz CD’s, even though I don’t have a CD player. I wanted them as I knew he loved them, wearing down the plastic and paper to shreds I am listening to Iz, for the first time in years. I could not listen to this endearing music till now as it reminded me too much of my dad. 💔 As the hot tears slide down my face, I feel his love I am not alone, even though I miss his booming voice, enthusiastic love & intense moods. He was everything to me. Long live your bright presence. I love you forever Dad. 📸 These photos were taken 20 years ago on a safari trip to Tanzania. My sweet mother & son are shown here too. Of course I miss my mother as well, yet I had years to grieve her loss with her slow decline with cancer. My dad was gone in a matter of weeks. They both are dear to my heart. ♥️

Here's a little secret--in January I try to goose my year's forthcoming reading total by consuming really short books, sometimes re-reads. Hence, I am now quickly re-reading Max Porter's quirky Grief is the Thing with Feathers, which is a brisk 114 page novel (novella?). If the title sounds familiar, it's because you're probably up on your Dickinson, specifically her poem 'Hope is the Thing With Feathers.' And, if you remember your Kierkegaard, you know that despair is the sickness unto death, and despair, of course, is the absence of hope. Phew. So Porter, in short, is having a little intertextual fun with his sly inversion of Dickinson's title. Such smarty-pants references don't stop there. Throughout the book are winks to Ted Hughes and his poetry. (The father character has written a book about Hughes). You don't need to know all of this to enjoy the tale. The narrative's central premise is heartbreaking--a father of two young boys has lost his wife. In the grief that follows, an anthropomorphic and mischievous crow invades their lives. It's a tripartite narrative moving from bite-sized chapters narrated by the crow, the father, and the sons, using sometimes salty language (almost entirely by the crow). There are surrealist and heart-rending moments. The crow, of course, is there to teach them all about themselves and how to carry on after their loss. And there's a poignant scene toward the end with the father, his sons, and the memory of the lost wife and mother, that is worth the price of admission. (Unless your heart is cold. Which, y'know, aye.) Do you have any short novellas (fewer than 200 pages please + thank you!) that you would recommend? (As opposed to, y'know, long novellas.) #griefisthethingwithfeathers #hopeisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter #emilydickinson #amreading #novellas

Well I've spent the first day of 2024 blasting through these 😆. So good though, one about the facets of grief in all its awfulness and humour; the other a wonderful mix of mysticism, devastation and loveliness in one. Such interesting use of language and non-conforming structure too. Hard to explain! But definitely recommended. Great way to start the year 😊. . . . #bookrecs #maxporter #lanny #griefisthethingwithfeathers

Caw-caw-cawrazy look at grief and the stages we go through to get over death (not our own, but the death of other people duh). It’s also very loving and triumphant and it’s got a great big crow in it. #instabooks #bookstagram #books #literature #booksbooksbooks #literaryfiction #experimental #reading #griefisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter #crow

I think I could have done with a Crow at one point. A distracting, protective, random, and practical Crow to overwhelm me with feathers and nudge me in the right direction when needed... Max Porter totally gets sorrow, and in 'Grief is the Thing with Feathers' he manages to put down in words some of the almost indescribable jumble that deep grief throws at the bereaved. Beautiful poetic language, dark humour, and more than one character you will love. Strangely heartwarming. Yes, it's painful in patches, but unless you're only in the early months after losing a loved one, it's definitely worth reading. Unlike Lannny, which I read earlier this year, this book didn't leave me feeling exhausted. It did make me feel sad though, and I have had a properly cathartic cry, which was definitely helpful. #maxporter #griefisthethingwithfeathers #christmaspresent #unforgettablebook

Lyrická metaforická knížka o stesku a truchlení, kdy ono truchlení symbolizuje vulgární havran. A důležitě si popostrčí brýlky a urovná tajemný černý rolák. Bohužel zřejmě nejsem asi ta nejjemnější vrstva fanoušků tohohle stylu, nesdílím nadšení ani vděk z napsání tohohle "deníčku". Ukamenujte mě. #griefisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter

Today we have Liz’s Top 5 Reads of 2023! Liz has eclectic reading tastes, but she generally reads contemporary fiction, memoir, and short stories, with a sprinkling of history and travel narratives. She says, “I seem to be a sucker for Brits (two of my top five this year).” “I love being a matchmaker, pairing customers with books they may not have known about. And I love when customers or other booksellers introduce me to new books as well. And yes, I love making any customer laugh. 🙂” Are any of Liz’s picks on your TBR list?

this one involved a lot of crying on public transport (eh, i’m good at it by now) i read #griefisthethingwithfeathers within the hours of the train ride up to manchester to see my cousin for a night of comedy, & i absolutely loved it #maxporter packs in the devastation & comfort & pain & funniness & confusion & loneliness that comes within grief. i picked this up at a pretty critical time, intentionally, & so it really hit home. but hey i believe torture via literature is good for you. i’d highly recommend, but bring tissues okayy full #bookreview pending

. 'The night is huge. And it hurts.' I've really enjoyed reading Max Porter this year. Grief Is The Thing With Feathers and Lanny are exceptional. Shy had less immediacy for me but I was still absorbed and heavily invested in this young man's night plight. Again, voices, speech and language are magnificently captured by Porter to propel the narrative and characters to his will. Once read, rarely forgotten. Enjoy.

🐋 Lanny by Max Porter 🌿 Lanny is a bit of a dream come true for me as a reader: a mythical woodland/nature creature woven into the lives of an English village, with poignant social commentary centered around a lost boy who seems to rise above the mess of today’s world. I’m a sucker for nature-adjacent writing that points out society’s flaws, so I was hooked from the start. And then add a shapeshifting earthy presence rooted in the landscape that meddles with people’s lives??? Sold. The book also has a really interesting style and structure that help round out the peculiarities of the characters and plot. It’s a weird and touching story, and I’ll be reading Max Porter again. #lanny #maxporter #lannymaxporter #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreview #bookerprizelonglist #griefisthethingwithfeathers #toothwort #deadpapatoothwort #litfic #magicalrealism #naturewriting

I will always & forever remember you dear friend. 💔 Today would have been your 54th bday. You left too young at 47. Your death has been a permanent crack on my heart, like so many whom have left this world. I will always remember your east coast sharp humor, the depth of your heart, your Scorpio zeal, how raw and real you were, how it was refreshingly honest to talk with you, how much you gave, your passion for what you believed in and for standing up fiercely for what was right, your determination (becoming a midwife), how you made me laugh, the depths of your moods, our painted nails & the indelible mark you left upon my heart. What fun we had over the years! I miss you so dear @birthfaery 🤍 #gonebutnotforgotten #gonebutnotforgotten #gonebutneverforgotten🙏 #gonebutneverforgotten💔 #loveyouforever #loveyouforever❤️

The book's title, refers to a poem by Emily Dickinson, ‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers. Poetry is a profound and punctuating tool in caring, dying and grieving. This book refuses to be boxed into just one category. Much like grief, it takes many shapes and forms. "In a London flat, two young boys face the unbearable sadness of their mother's sudden death. Their father, a Ted Hughes scholar and scruffy romantic, imagines a future of well-meaning visitors and emptiness. In this moment of despair they are visited by Crow - antagonist, trickster, healer, babysitter. This self-described sentimental bird is attracted to the grieving family and threatens to stay until they no longer need him."
