“In 7th grade, I began the 2 year journey of orthodontics. And let me tell you, it was an uncomfortable one to say the least! My pallet was narrow, thus I started off with a lovely appliance that was placed at the roof of my mouth, complete with a key, that my mom had to turn every day to expand my jaw so that teeth that were unable to grow in had room to do so. Ouch! Then they added the braces, and finally, to top it off, I was given headgear to wear 14 hours a day for 6 months. Talk about an awkward stage for a girl! But I was dedicated to the process. For a temporary season in my life, I looked pretty funny to myself and my classmates and went through some physical discomfort. BUT! I was faithful to do everything they asked. I never gave up even when it was tempting to do so, and at the end of 2 years when I was 15 years old and a freshman in high school, they took off those braces revealing a perfectly gorgeous smile; the one I’d envisioned a couple of years earlier when I began what felt like a really long journey. It didn’t just end there, however. I had to maintain the work that had been accomplished with a retainer so that things wouldn’t go back to the way they were. Thankfully the maintenance wasn’t nearly as involved as the process. That part was relatively easy. But you see, in the process, the stretching of the expander was painful at times, but it made room. It took me a while to call my cancer by its proper name. It hid out in euphemisms, metaphors, genteelisms and scientific exactitude. It was interesting to meet a side of myself that I’d seen before but not got properly acquainted with: if not a coward, then definitely afraid. Last week, according to blood tests and no small amount of pain, I had a heart attack. I’ve processed it now, but it took a while and a weekend with my daughters. Writing this, I caught myself about to describe the attack as “a cardiac event”, because it was mild enough for me sit on for a few hours and, well, the coward hasn’t gone away – somewhere in my system, Robert Ford, the rat, is still shooting Jesse James in the back of the head. Anyway, yeah, that happened, but, honestly, I feel better than I’ve felt in months. It’s like my body didn’t want to give me any more grief, but I forced its hand by needing to explode to get well. If English writing isn't your forte (see previous post), then we have mathematics. Math is concrete; it has answers: 2 + 2 = 4; it does not change, one cannot effectively argue disbelief in this statement. They can deny its accuracy all they want, but that does not change the truth, the reality of the solution. When something doesn't add up, it's false, an inconsistent equation. If X is a preceding number to Y in a sequence starting with X, Y...Z which has Z somewhere in the sequence; then the event of X cannot succeed the events of Y or even Z, when we know X is the first integer in the sequence. Similarly, if A > B + C, then A ≠ B + C but also A ≠ B and A ≠ C; thus, B and C cannot define A. It might seem like it fits logically, but it cannot be an accurate calculation mathematically with the information we know in fact to be true. Perhaps you overlooked such problems before because you wanted the components to add up; if you didn't try to figure it out by yourself, you had no reason not to believe the equation given was correct. It was easier to listen to what you were told, as you assumed (or wanted to believe) it had a high probability of accuracy. But, once you sit down with your own pencil and paper or get out a calculator to check the math, there is no denying the validity of your computed answer. It might be a better idea to follow the river back against the current, sometimes to its very source, to clean and heal it.
