🧡 Sunset Rambling… 🌻 Under the warm glow of the evening sun, I took 16 ramblers on a gorgeous 3-mile stroll from St Agnes Head, up to St Agnes Beacon (yes, it was windy!), down to Wheal Coates, past the Towanroath Engine House, and back up to St Agnes Head. 🌊 After a day in front of a screen, nothing beats a scenic walk with a group of wonderful humans. I already feel a million times better for just being outside, surrounded by our incredible coastline with my likeminded ramblers chinwagging their way around the route. 🤌🏼 I’m absolutely going to plonk a few more evening rambles in the diary for June, and will continue them until the clocks change. Camassia Leichtlinii. Riverside Walk, Kew Gardens. TAKEN - Tue 2nd May'23 Camassia leichtlinii, the great camas or large camas, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae. This herbaceous perennial is native to western North America in British Columbia, Canada and California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, in the United States. Great camas is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows from a bulb. It can grow 24–48 inches (61–122 cm) tall. Leaves are long and narrow, stemming from the basal rosette. The inflorescence is a spike-like cluster on a leafless stem that is held above the leaves. It can be mistaken for the more common Camassia quamash, which has an overlapping range. It needs consistent moisture in the spring, but will not be harmed by seasonal drought after the seed pods mature and the leaves dry out. Camas stands can benefit from seasonal fires as well, as they aid in regeneration and reduce competition from brush and weeds. The bulbs are edible, but must be baked at length. Traditionally, they were cooked in fire pits for at least three hours, and ideally for between one and three days. The ruined walls of Millom Castle, and the great tower which now forms the current farmhouse. A manor on the site was granted to Godard de Boyvill, owner of the Manor of Millom, in around 1134. The manor came into Huddleston ownership in around 1240 when de Boyvill’s granddaughter married into the Huddleston family. John Huddleston was given a licence to crenellate (fortify the building) in 1335. The great tower dates from the 16th century. The Huddlestons took an active part in England’s regional warfare. In the Wars of the Roses, Sir John Huddleston fought on the Yorkist side, being present at the Battles of Blore Heath and Bosworth Field in the 1400’s. In 1460 the castle was captured by Lancastrian forces. After the accession of Henry VII, Sir John and his son Henry secured a pardon and retained the estate. In the English Civil War of the 1600’s Sir William Huddleston was a leading Royalist colonel in Cumberland and Lancashire. He was defeated by Parliamentarian forces, and Millom Castle was damaged by cannon fire in 1644. By 1739 the castle walls were in dilapidated condition, and in 1748 the castle was sold to Sir James Lowther of Whitehaven. Today Millom Castle is a Grade I listed building and scheduled ancient monument, with a moat is still visible in one or two places, and backs onto the beautiful 12th century Holy Trinity church. The history of the Huddleston family in itself is fascinating, no less for being connected to the early English royals, and for taking part in famous battles such as Agincourt and Edgehill. Rye is a true medieval city, with cobblestone streets and half-timbered buildings.
