This morning Marco read me fews very depressing news related to the climate-crisis . Earth is warming fastest than we thought it would. The future looks even grimmer than it did before. In the midst of this ecological grief I deeply feel, I turn into the Polar Regions, the very places climate change is hitting the hardest, the places I love more than anything I have ever loved in this world. I look at the eyes of my fellow Polar critters and I can’t help but feel ashamed. I know deep inside, me frequently visiting these regions adds up to the problem but I can’t help but crave for more Polar Wilderness. I don’t have much hope, I never have had much hope, maybe fools hope. But somehow going to those places, witnessing a very small instant of the extremely difficult lives of the perhaps most resilient critters of the Planet Earth warms my heart, brings me the greatest joy. I know they will fight to survive until they can’t. And their fight becomes my moral imperative.

L'edificio del museo D’Orsay fu progettato dall'architetto Victor Laloux a partire dal 1898 dove in precedenza sorgevano una caserma di cavalleria e il vecchio Palazzo d'Orsay. I lavori furono terminati dopo soli due anni, perché la stazione fosse pronta per l'Esposizione Universale del 1900. Nel 1939 le grandi linee ferroviarie furono spostate alla stazione d'Austerlitz e la stazione continuò a servire solo il traffico locale. Negli anni successivi, lo stabile ebbe vari usi: nel 1945 fu destinato a sede di transito dei prigionieri di guerra e negli anni 1950 cessò completamente il servizio. Nel 1961 ne fu decisa la demolizione. I provvedimenti presi da Pompidou nell'ambito del progetto di rinnovamento della capitale prevedevano che al suo posto nascesse un grande parallelepipedo di cristallo (già molti anni prima era stata progettata al suo posto una piscina coperta con pavimento mobile, come sede di eventi sportivi); ma gli sforzi di molti cittadini illustri che si battevano per la sua salvaguardia fecero sì che la stazione venisse risparmiata dalla demolizione e che venisse classificata monumento nazionale. Nel 1973 fu scelto come sede stabile della compagnia teatrale Renaud-Barrault e nel 1974 divenne sede della casa d'aste Drouot. Nel 1978, sotto la presidenza Giscard d'Estaing fu finalmente decisa la trasformazione in museo. Al celebre architetto italiano Gae Aulenti venne affidata la disposizione degli spazi interni e la progettazione dei percorsi espositivi. A lei si deve la scelta della pietra calcarea chiara, che fornisce luminosità alle sale sfruttando al meglio la luce proveniente dalla volta in vetro e metallo e che nello stesso tempo rende unitario l'insieme. Il percorso si articola su tre livelli, utilizzando la navata centrale (quella lungo la quale una volta correvano i binari) come tronco principale da cui si dipartono terrazze e passaggi. Il Palais Garnier fa parte della grande ricostruzione parigina del Secondo Impero francese voluta dall'imperatore Napoleone III, che scelse il barone Haussmann per seguire i lavori. È uno degli edifici più grandi e rappresentativi della sua epoca, tale da aver segnato molto Parigi, con la sua grandiosità e ricchezza, divenendo proprio simbolo di bellezza della città in quel periodo. Nel 1858 l'imperatore autorizzò Haussmann a demolire i 12.000 metri quadrati necessari per costruire l'opéra. Il progetto fu nel 1861 assegnato a Charles Garnier (1825-1898). La prima pietra fu posta nel 1862, seguita dall'inizio della costruzione nel 1862. Si dice che la moglie dell'imperatore, l'imperatrice Eugenia, chiese a Garnier durante la costruzione se l'edificio sarebbe stato in stile greco o romano, alla quale l'architetto rispose: "È in stile Napoleone III, Madame"; uno stile molto ricercato alla ricerca di molti dettagli e commistioni, che si può definire eclettico. Ricco di velluto, foglia d'oro, e cherubini e ninfe, l'interno è caratterizzato da una sontuosità barocca. Il ridotto, o foyer, è l'emblema della ricchezza dell'edificio, insieme allo scalone interno, costruito apposta affinché gli spettatori dei palchi potessero mettersi in mostra nella società.
