We did it! Traveled all the way across the USA in two months! From CA across the southern states to Louisiana, then up to NY, then back across through the middle states. Feels wonderful to be home, but also sad that that big adventure is behind us. Feeling so very grateful that we had no breakdowns, illness or injury. That we got to visit family, see national parks, experience history.. so many things! I'm glad I kept a journal. I already can't remember all we did! I only wish we had had more time to explore in each place and not have to move on so quickly. On our hike yesterday, we came across a couple of foundations of old houses and some cool old bottles. The girls have been busy researching their finds this morning. The poison bottle appears to have been manufactured somewhere around 1900! The other bottles are old beer bottles, mostly from the 1950s and 60s. Something interesting we learned this week: during floods and heavy rains, fire ants can form "rafts" made of floating ants, which can stay afloat for weeks. They will also form towers of ants around stems and branches that stick out of the water. They are able to do this because of a waxy coating and small bubble-holding hairs covering the ants' bodies, which essentially makes them waterproof. The ants rotate position as they float, allowing the ants at the bottom of the raft to come up for oxygen. We got the opportunity to actually see this interesting phenomenon happen at our local wetlands this week. Due to drought conditions and a clogged pump, the ponds have been empty for several years. A peek at our homeschool week: -We saw a bald eagle while running errands, which led to some research about bald eagles and some eagle art! -We learned about pollination and some of the different adaptations that plants have to attract pollinators. -We learned about ocean currents and did some nature journaling with our forest school group. -We did some reading. L is still working on both Harry Potter book 4 and The Magician's Nephew. Red has been reading some Wild Kratts books. I'm reading Harry Potter book 1 aloud to Red and Birdy. -L and Red learned about Paititi and life in the Andes, Viking sun stones, the search for Amelia Earhart, and the ancient Mayans by watching several episodes of Expedition Unknown. -L and Red did some math puzzles. A peek at our homeschool week: We're still on break from all our more formal type lessons this week, but plenty of learning is still happening around here. -We did some reading. L is working on Harry Potter book 4 and is also wrapping up The Magician's Nephew. Red is working on a Wild Kratts book. I'm reading By the Shores of Silver Lake aloud. Birdy and I read several picture books together. Her favorite this week is The Eye Book by Theo LeSieg (aka Dr. Seuss). -We met with our homeschool co-op group and planned out activities for the next few months while the kids roasted marshmallows and played on the playground. -We met with our forest school group and did an experiment about the effects of ocean acidification. -The kids worked on lots of crafts. L tried out her new zodiac resin molds. Red learned how to finger knit. -We practiced our math skills playing Yatzee and Monopoly Jr. -We took a couple of short hikes. One was just the kids and I. August is going to be a really great month for night sky gazing! There's a full supermoon tomorrow night and a second full supermoon August 30th (this one will be the closest full moon of the year). Plus the Perseid meteor shower peaks on August 13th! The August moon is called the Sturgeon Moon because this is the time of year that sturgeon are most easily caught in the Great Lakes. This week in the garden: -We saw this gorgeous bright yellow differential grasshopper, which we relocated away from my garden. 💛 -We started some seeds for our fall garden: pumpkins, sunflowers, cucumbers, and garden beans. We'll be starting them in a sunny window and will keep them inside until this intense heat cools down just a bit. 🌱 -Most of our spring plants are about done for the season (it has been hot and dry) but we're still getting lots of cherry tomatos and peppers. And our herb garden is still doing pretty well. 🍅 -We have our first (and probably only) watermelon of the season. Learning in the garden: -We've been learning all about these cute but hungry yellow woolly bear caterpillars we've been finding all over our sunflowers. We even found some of their eggs to observe for a few days until they hatched. -The kids have been measuring and tracking our sunflowers' growth. We noticed a bunch of yellow woolly bear caterpillars (Virginia tiger moth larva) eating our sunflower leaves this morning. While picking them off our plants so we could relocate them away from our garden, we found eggs and an adult moth! A peek at our homeschool week: -L has been working on a toadstool hat made from cardboard, tin foil, and paper mache. -We continued our study of the carnivore order. -Lots of reading. L is currently working on Little House on the Banks of Plum Creek. Red is working on another Bob Book set. L and I are co-reading Percy Jackson book 4.
