Porcupine Facts: North American porcupines are the second largest rodents in North America (beavers are the largest). One porcupine may have as many as 30,000 quills, each of which possesses tiny backward-pointing barbs. Each quill is specially adapted hair made stiff by its shape and spongy core. When relaxed the quills lay flat against the body, but when threatened the quills rise to make a pincushion defense. Porcupines do not shoot their quills but will back into and whip their tail at their aggressor. Once stuck into the victim's skin they detach easily from the porcupine's skin and are replaced within a few weeks. Bonus fun fact: Poppy shares her birthday with her trainer, keeper RoseMarie. Jeg har blandt andet valgt fag om adfærd, ernæring og forsøgsdyr - ja og et kun om fisk 🐟😅 Der findes mange andre muligheder og det er det der gør det SÅ fedt! Man kan skræddersy sin uddannelse helt til hvad man vil ende ud med at specialisere sig inden for. Da jeg startede på uddannelsen synes jeg at ernæring var røv kedeligt, men nu er det den verden jeg allerhelst vil arbejde indenfor - en stor del af mine valgfag har haft med ernæring at gøre, så man kan også skifte mening undervejs og det er kun godt. For mig er bacheloren bred og det skal man udnytte til at finde sine egne interesser, såsom at finde ud af at ernæring faktisk er spændende 😂 Jeg skrev selv bachelorprojekt om avl af service hunde og det tænker jeg ikke jeg skal arbejde med, men det er fedt at have skrevet om genetik, fordi jeg helt sikkert vil kunne bruge det på en eller anden måde igen senere. Mange er også stadig i tvivl om hvad de vil arbejde med efter kandidaten og der kan man med valgfag også vælge stadigvæk at ramme bredt ud, så ens muligheder vil være meget åbne. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas!! Today I had the chance to visit FRWC and go on one of their safaris, and I got hear and learn about their facilities and about their 1000+ animals! FRWC has one of the largest breeding programs for cheetahs which has been established for 40 years. Since all the cheetahs in the world are related in se way, they work to find the least related cheetahs to breed. It’s cool how they do it here..the hallway of love! They have bachelor cheetahs in the enclosure and allow the one female cheetah to peruse the hallway and then she makes her pick! FRWC also houses black footed cats (BFC)!! I was particularly interested in them because I had the opportunity to work with bfcs in South Africa with another zoo. FRWC has a BFC that is 18 years old!! I got to enjoy FRWC with my girl Alexis, a fellow future veterinarian with me!!! I know it’s crazy numbers, but do you have an idea on how they are raised? 🤔 There are 2 types of poultry farms: 1️⃣Commercial farming which is usually handled by large corporations 🏭; and 2️⃣Backyard farming, a low-input operation and is usually managed by households or small-scale farmers 👩🌾🚜. In raising poultry, many factors should be considered and monitored for the chicks’ comfort and health 🐥, but how though? Backyard rearing may be tough and require more effort than automated commercial ones, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for you! Here are some tips and tricks on caring for your backyard broilers 🥰❤️🐔! ✅Feed them the correct type of diet based on their stage of growth. ✅Supplement their diet with proper nutrients or feed additives such as multivitamins and electrolytes for added immunity! 🐣 ✅Correct temperature for brooding, adequate space, and proper ventilation.♨️🌡Adjust the housing temperature depending on the time of the day through fans, heating lamps, and tarpaulin curtains 🌤🌙🌧 to ensure that the chicks don’t get stressed (especially with our elevated heat index nowadays!) ✅Disease prevention and control through vaccination and biosecurity measures (such as proper housing sanitation 🚮). If these simple things aren’t done, your chickens may be prone to certain illnesses 😷🤒 such as infections caused by bacteria like fowl cholera 🦠, or protozoa like coccidiosis which may manifest as watery discharge from the eyes 👁, diarrhea 🤢, and even depression 😥. 🐶 The lovely Prada recently visited the clinic after showing signs of a very sore mouth. Unfortunately like many Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, she was found to have a loud heart murmur. Chest X-rays and a brief heart ultrasound were performed by Dr Justin and it was found her heart had indeed enlarged from normal size due to mitral valve disease, and she was started on heart medication. Thankfully her sore teeth were successfully removed under anaesthetic and Prada’s heart disease is now being managed. All dogs with a moderate grade heart murmur will benefit from chest X-rays and a heart ultrasound because life saving heart medication may be needed if the heart is found to be enlarged. Why is animal testing still occurring when it’s cruel, highly unsuccessful, and wasteful and when there are resources that already exist that remain unaffordable and inaccessible to people who need them?? Because the public’s concern and opinion about it is NOT allowed to take place.
