Sabercat, most sharpest of beasts- I drew this last night inspired by the work of my brother in arms @sergeimerjeevski Popularly known as saber toothed tigers, machairodontines were a separate branch of the cat family, that diverged from the rest of cats around 15 million years ago. They were not simply tigers with longer fangs; they were very much their own thing. Their fossils caused confusion at first. Megantereon was initially thought to be a bear with particularly sharp teeth. Smilodon was initially thought to be a giant hyena. They went from leopard size to bigger than lions or tigers and most had blade like fangs with serrated edges, very different from the conical fangs of modern cats. They didn't strangle their prey, or dislocate their necks; their bites were lacerating, their kills would have been too bloody for Animal Planet. :B There's evidence of them preying on large animals from glyptodonts to mammoths, and yes, also hominins. Megantereon and Dinofelis were eating our australopithecine ancestors. Homo erectus sometimes fell prey to Megantereon. When humans arrived to the Americas they faced Smilodon itself, a monster cat up to maybe 500 kg. Sabercats, prominently among Carnivorans, contributed to feed humanity's fear of the dark.... #sabercat #smilodon #megantereon #homotherium #drawing #art #machairodontine #hodarinundu #paleoart #carnivora #predator #cat #pleistocene #prehistoric

If industrial man continues to multiply his numbers and expand his operations he will succeed in his apparent intention, to seal himself off from the natural and isolate himself within a synthetic prison of his own making. We are slaves in the sense that we depend for our daily survival upon an expand-or-expire agro-industrial empire—a crackpot machine—that the specialists cannot comprehend and the managers cannot manage. Which is, furthermore, devouring world resources at an exponential rate. We are, most of us, dependent employees. Armed with an extremely noxious chemical defense, the Ice Age Brachyprotoma has no trouble scaring even the king of kleptoparasites away from a carcass... Brachyprotoma was a prehistoric skunk that lived in North America during the Pleistocene. It is one of the very few small mammals that went extinct at the end of the last Ice Age- most other known extinctions were of megafauna. The skunk was unusual in that it had a short skull and very powerful jaws. It also had curious vertical grooves on its fangs which, when I first read about it, made me immediately think "it's venomous!" (which you know, it likely wasn´t, but imagine a venomous carnivoran!). The grooves are supposed to be structural reinforcement of the teeth which coupled with the powerful jaws and skull suggests Brachyprotoma was feeding on something quite tough. It may have been a scavenger, using its chemical powers (common to the entire skunk family) to protect itself from other large carnivores and even evict them from kills. The strong jaws may even have allowed it to chew on frozen meat, a handy skill for a skunk that lived all the way north to Yukon and Alaska during the Pleistocene. I like to imagine the skunk was particularly noxious because of the fearsome predators it had to deal with. Why did it go extinct? Nobody knows. It may have been very specialized- maybe it depended so much on megafauna carcasses that it went out the same way some vultures and other scavengers did. Or maybe it was so noxious humans arrived to the Americas and were like, "Nope, this thing has to go". The Asian stink badger (not really a badger, but a member of the skunk family) is said to have such a powerful chemical spray that dogs have been known to asphyxiate to death when harassing one. So who knows... #brachyprotoma #skunk #carnivoran #iceage #pleistocene #scavenger #mephitidae #zorrillo #hodarinundu #megafauna #extinct #wildlife #paleoart #aposematic

SQUIRRELS AND CHIPMUNK 🐿️ ⚫️🐿️⚫️ 🥜🔴🐿️ March/April 2024 These different types of squirrels and chipmunks are constantly out and about now that it’s spring. 🐿️⚫️The first picture of the black squirrel looks like a gigantic rodent from the #pleistocene era. 😀🐿️ This black squirrel is always digging up the bulbs in our flowerbeds, digging up the sprouted vegetables and the vegetable seeds in our garden. In the video, at the end, you can see it take the entire suet ball, made of animal fat and bird seeds, with him probably to its nest 🪹. 🐿️🔴The greyish/red squirrel seen in the forest, in the tree, actually looks pregnant with her first litter of young. She was timid. 🐿️🔴⚫️🐿️ The chipmunk and the black and greyish/red squirrels in the park, by the lake, are always playful and seem to always want to put on a show while begging for food. #squirrel🐿 #squirellsofinstagram #easterngreysquirrel #easterngreysquirrels #blacksquirrels #blacksquirrel #chipmunks #chipmunk #squirrelvideos At the end there is a #squirrelvideo 🎶 of all the different #rodentsofinsta that we saw. #canadiangeographicmagazine #springtime2024 #northernontarioliving 🇨🇦 #animalphotography📷 🐿️🐿️⚫️🐿️🔴🥜🌲🌳🐿️🐿️⚫️🔴🐿️🐿️🌳🌲🌳🌲🔴⚫️🥜

Megatherium is one of the most famous creatures of the Pleistocene and the poster child of giant ground sloths. Measuring 6 meters in length and 7 feet tall at the shoulder when on all fours, with a body mass of 4.5 tonnes, it was one of the largest sloths to have ever lived. 🤘HIMALAYAN HELL PIG 🤘 These absolute units are far more omnivorous than their aquatic cousins. Actively engaging in predation, they've been documented hunting in small quakes (the name for a group of hell pigs) to take down the largest of Mastodons. Tail up, this alpha woolly hippo is defending his territory. Recent wounds illustrate their constant need to defend their quake from younger usurpers. For anyone wondering, these woolly hippos never existed. Or did they? The Armley Hippo was discovered along side Woolly mammoth bones. - Yorkshire 1851 Although theorised that warmer watercourses allowed the hippopotami to travel to prehistoric England and even lived among early tea sipping hominids! Happy #MinnesotaMonday from Procyon lotor - the raccoon! Raccoons are medium-sized mammals that are native to North America, and have been introduced in parts of Europe and Asia. Depending on their environment, raccoons vary widely in size, and can be up to almost a foot tall at the shoulder and anywhere from 4.5 to more than 57 pounds! Raccoons are omnivores and will eat many kinds of foods, from acorns to fish to human garbage. These intelligent animals have a very well-developed sense of touch, thanks to whisker-like hairs on their front paws. In fact, nearly ⅔ of the sensory region of a raccoon’s brain is dedicated to the sense of touch! This specimen is a Procyon lotor dentary (one half of a lower jaw), and was found in north St. Paul in 1974. While it has not yet been carbon dated, it is likely around 10,000-20,000 years old. Scale is in centimeters. Specimen SMM P74.20.1. Modern Procyon image is public domain. . . . . . #MNIceAge #IceAge #Pleistocene #Raccoon #Procyon #Jaw #Dentary #Bone #Teeth #Fossil #Paleontology #Geology #STEM #Museum #MuseumCollection #NaturalHistoryCollection #NaturalHistory #Minnesota #TwinCities

A Gigantopithecus has got itself a cuddly teddy bear! :D Except... it's actually a hapless pygmy panda Ailuropoda microta, which at only 1 m was smaller than the smallest bears of our days. And it is not particularly thrilled about this fate. Its only hope now is to escape while the giant ape sleeps... I doodled this inspired by several cases of monkeys and apes being quite taken with cute little animals the same way we are. What I didn´t know until @tetzoo pointed it out is that wild chimpanzees have been known to abduct hyraxes and keep them as "pets" until they get bored of them OR the hyrax dies. I can´t imagine wild chimps are too gentle! In this week’s 6-for-6-style #FOLLOWERFRIDAY: 1. A male Saber-toothed kitty (Smilodon populator) enjoys a peaceful afternoon after having a big breakfast. This species of felid lived during the Pleistocene epoch throughout much of South America, disappearing from the continent some 10 kya. It was also one of the largest felids ever! 2. A big ol’ Gastornis gigantea preens itself. It is one of many species of Gastornis, and is known from Eocene North America. It was over 6’ft tall and weighed nearly (if not more than) ~400 lbs! 3. A lanky Deinotherium giganteum. This proboscidean is a very distant relative to elephants and allies and is apart of a more archaic lineage. This species lived in what is now Eurasia during the mid-Miocene until the early Pliocene epoch. You may notice a lack of traditional tusks, and a presence of… scythe-like teeth? No, that ain’t right, right? Nope! Your eyes aren’t deceiving you! Those tusks are incisors in the lower jaw and may have been utilized while feeding, as we are aware of wear patterns on the ends of them. I hope my recon made the animal a little less nightmare fuel! 😂 4. The menacing Rudy from the third Ice Age movie. He is a cunning and highly aggressive albino Baryonyx walkeri, characterized by a missing front tooth, radiant white skin, horrid claws and and insatiable appetite! In the movie, he was also insanely oversized - even more than Jurassic World’s dinos! Love this guy, tho. 5. GahDAYUM! Have you ever woke up one morning and thought, “I wonder if whales eat sloths?”? Well, here’s a whale- Livyatan melvillei to be exact- preparing to devour a poor Thalassocnus sp. off of the coast of Perú some 6 mya in the Miocene epoch. It’s not confirmed that Livyatan ate sloths, but I’m sure that if the opportunity arose, then the deed would be done! 6. A baddie pig in the style of Angry Birds. Designed after my coworker! Celebrating all high B’s in finals, so I had to deliver sum beeg! If you’re in college, good luck on your O-Chem exams and A&P finals! 😃

Real living is choosing to be uncomfortable. Only then can all of life’s marvels and tragedies be seen and felt by your spirit. Society is about denying nature because of its brutality. But in denying it, you deny a part of yourself, a beautiful part of nature. But, do not burn yourselves out. Be a reluctant enthusiast, a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. #FossilFriday How to identify bones & teeth: The best way is comparing the find with a museum's collection 🏛 Here you see a premolar (P3) of the maxilla which belongs to the irish elk Megaloceros giganteus 🫎 I found it in Pleistocene river deposits (126.000-12.000 years old) ⛏️ I took the other photo in @landesmuseumdarmstadt , this museum has a gorgeous pleistocene collection! The "irish elk" / giant deer" had the largest antlers that have ever existed on earth (with up to ~4 metres!) 😮 #germanfossils #fossilwildlife #megaloceros #megalocerosgiganteus #irishelk #peistozän #eiszeit #pleistocene #hlmd #landesmuseumdarmstadt #iceage #iceagefossils #pleistocenefossils #deerfossils #fossils #fossilien #fossilcollection #fossiliensammlung #paleontology #skeleton #paleontologist #paläontologie #fossilnerd #fossilfreak

I found this Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) tibia a few weeks ago on the Isle of Wight coast. I’m not sure how old it is, it could be modern to be honest, but it’s still a nice found. It’s also extremely worn, which can be best seen in the last 3 images. That other Roe Deer tibia was found a few months ago by @missemiliaevans and in comparison it’s much older and in way better shape. But still, it’s always useful to have more specimens for comparison! #palaeontology #fossils #fossilwatch #fossiladdict #fossil #paleo #paleontology #pleistocene #palaeontologist #palaeo #palaeontologistinthemaking #iceagefossils #mammalfossil #mammoth #dinosaur #dinosaurs #dinosaurlover #devensian #fossilfriday

Quinkana size 😨 Quinkana is a genus of mekosuchine crocodylians that lived in Australia from about 24 million to about 40,000 years ago. By the Pleistocene, Quinkana had become one of the top terrestrial predators of Australia, possessing long legs and ziphodont teeth (lateromedially compressed, recurved, and serrated). Quinkana comes from the "Quinkans", a legendary folk from Aboriginal myths. Most specimens of Quinkana were small in size, about 3 m (10 ft), though, a fragmentary, Pliocene-aged specimen is estimated to have reached up to 6 m (20 ft) in length, making it at the time one of Australia's largest predators, second only to the giant monitor lizard, Megalania. Two specimens have been found in the Darling Downs ecosystems of the late Pleistocene period. 🔴 FOLLOW US ▶@prehistoric__planet ----------- #Quinkana #paleontology #динозавр #prehistoric #dinosaur #dinosaurs #dinosaurios #dinosaurier #dinosauri #dinomite #dinosaurio #dinosaure #dinozaur #skeleton #dinossauros #fossils #caiman #pleistocene #Australia #fossil #science #trex #tyrannosaurusrex #jurassicpark #jurassicworld #aboriginal #crocodylian #instasize #aligator #crocodile

A venturesome minority will always be eager to set off on their own, and no obstacles should be placed in their path; let them take risks, for godsake, let them get lost, sunburnt, stranded, drowned, eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches - that is the right of all beings. But that fear that haunts those in power, the fear of death, the unknown, the unpredictable, it persuades them to oppress others with this fear as well. They don’t understand those who walk barefooted, and so demonize them with slanderous “uncivilized” terms. So that others fear the natural world as well. The idea that the earth that bore me is behind a PAYWALL, is blasphemous. We are not a social security number. We are children of this world, and no one has the right to apply earth denying rules upon us, out of their fear of our ancestral ways. We are not afraid of the natural world, with all of its dangers and wonders. We are a mirror of it, animals never tamed by the concrete jungle and its defamation of those who seek the wild. We will not hide from the concept of death by engrossing ourselves in superficial luxuries and consumerism. We embrace the universe in all its fatality and beauty, living without chains and enjoying every moment spent in this improbable paradise. • • • #stoneage #paleolithic #neolithic #prehistoric #mesolithic #prehistory #primitivetechnology #stonetools #lithics #iceage #flintknapping #ancesteralskills #primitiveskills #hidetanning #rewilding #huntergatherer #copperage #bronzeage #cavepainting #earthskills #bushcraft #livingwild #primitivehunting #braintanning #rewild #pleistocene

It is as vital to our lives water and meat. Modern civilization destroys what little remains of the wild, the spare, the original, and is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of civilization itself. A man on foot will see more, feel more, enjoy more in one mile than the motorized tourists can in a hundred miles. • • • #stoneage #paleolithic #neolithic #prehistoric #mesolithic #prehistory #primitivetechnology #stonetools #lithics #iceage #flintknapping #ancesteralskills #primitiveskills #hidetanning #rewilding #huntergatherer #copperage #bronzeage #cavepainting #earthskills #bushcraft #livingwild #primitivehunting #braintanning #rewild #pleistocene

“🐺Dire Wolves of L.A🌴” 404 Dire Wolf skulls are in display of over 1800 whose remains have been found here. Because wolves hunt in packs, it is thought that most likely they were also trapped in the tar in pursuit of easy prey and as they attempted to feed on the animals that were trapped in the tar seeps, they also suffered the same fate. During the end of the Pleistocene Epoch, around the Los Angeles Basin, Dire Wolves are believed to have been the major predator species in the area. #direwolves #labreatarpits #pleistocene #archealogy #paleontology #canisdirus #losangeles #socal #california #labrea #museum #labreatarpitsandmuseum #howdoyoumuseum #socalmuseums #artsandculture

Culture has lead us to betray our own aboriginal spirit and wholeness, into an ever-worsening realm of synthetic, isolating, impoverishing estrangement. Which is not to say that there are no more everyday pleasures, without which we would loose our humanness. But as our plight deepens, we glimpse how much must be erased for our redemption. • • • #stoneage #paleolithic #neolithic #prehistoric #mesolithic #prehistory #primitivetechnology #stonetools #lithics #iceage #flintknapping #ancesteralskills #primitiveskills #hidetanning #rewilding #huntergatherer #copperage #bronzeage #cavepainting #earthskills #bushcraft #livingwild #primitivehunting #braintanning #rewild #pleistocene

Riuscirai a sopravvivere?
