Ryan and Dan did a two day camping trip with school in Arkansas, and they had a great time. Weather was sketchy the first night, but they had fun with friends, did some hiking and a ten mile rafting trip down the Buffalo River. One of the most valuable aspects of a Charlotte Mason education is the love of literature that we are able to foster in our children. Sometimes, a hike with friends turns into bonding over trying to catch minnows ❤️🐟 I love our homeschool friends! We could have said no, we could have told them not to get wet, I could have gotten upset when my 5yr old ended up soaked from the waist down but instead we said yes to their curiosity and both moms have learned to keep extra clothes in the car. It was a gorgeous sunny day and they were all mostly dry by the time we packed up. In return, we were gifted engaged kids who played and laughed together. Reflecting back on this homeschool year, I am so thankful for being able to do it year round. It’s only been the last 2 years that we shifted from the traditional school year to year round and the benefits are far beyond any other measurement. ✈️ We get to travel during off season when prices are lower and destinations less crowded. ☀️ We can school during the summer when life slows down and all of our non-homeschooling friends are traveling. It’s also WAY too hot to do much else. 🏖️We can take breaks when we need to, if our friends want to get together, or we just need a change from the school routine. Do you school year round? I’m not complaining, but can I just be real for a moment? It’s a good hard, but being a homeschool mom is hard. It’s time consuming. It’s a full-time job. You’re the math teacher, history teacher, science teacher, grammar teacher, music teacher, art teacher, cafeteria crew, bus driver, school nurse, principal, and janitor – and, if your house is like ours – you’ve got students in different grades that you’re teaching simultaneously. In my head, I should be able to get other things done during the day, too…like lots of things. But the reality is, that doesn’t always happen and it’s not because I’m not trying. It’s because homeschooling is full-time work. Work I love. Work I’m so incredibly thankful for. But legitimate, time-consuming work. So, if you know a homeschool mom, please don’t wonder what she does all day with all her time. Don’t assume she can “do that” because she’s just home with her kids. Or maybe do wonder. Wonder long enough and diligently enough that you really think about what it would mean to teach several different grades multiple subjects each while watching younger kids, making meals, keeping a house, and doing all the normal things adults have to do. And if you’re a homeschool mom beating yourself up for not getting more “other stuff” done during school days, just give yourself grace, and look over at those young ones who you get the privilege of teaching and training. Work will wait for you (sadly laundry will never get fed up and do itself!) and will always be there, but your children won’t. They’ll grow up. They’ll graduate. And eventually you’ll “retire” from being a schoolteacher. But what you’re teaching today – both the school lessons and the life lessons – will continue on and shape not only your children’s lives, but your grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s and so on. It’s in our children that we leave a legacy that outlives us, and contributes to the world long after we’re gone. Sometimes we toss our books to the side a take a field trip for the day. Ok, maybe it’s more often than not, but who would love science and history when this is what their science and history class looks like?! I surprised my son with taking an impromptu trip to the Fort Worth Science and History Museum last week for a hands on lesson in dinosaurs, space and much more. Bonus points for us, the Noble Planararium was running a show on flight - seeing as we are in North Carolina this week it seemed fitting to learn where “first in flight” comes from! France Day Trip We got to walk with Barbary Macaque monkeys at La Montagnes des Singes, “Monkey Mountain!” This was so incredible! The monkeys were walking right alongside us, munching on apples, sitting along the fence within arms reach just watching us, wrestling, and a mama was nearby with her itty bitty baby. Then the kids enjoyed a ropes course, some games, and neat playgrounds. After walking with monkeys we walked within the walls of a medieval castle! Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg is a mountain fortress that dates back to the the 12th century. It was absolutely breathtaking and you felt transported back in time as you walked through the furnished castle. We ended the day in a near by town, Riquewihr, which was first mentioned in 1094. It’s an enclosed town that is part of the Alsace wine route. You would see miles and miles of vineyards in every direction. It is also one of the two towns that inspired Beauty and the Beast! We enjoyed some crepes and shopping! This week we enjoyed hiking four miles on the Hexenklamm Trail - Witches Trail. There is a folklore about witches that roamed this trail and today you can hike it to find some of these witches! It was really beautiful trail and a bit adventurous to walk narrow ledges along the gorge. Such a BLESSING to have the freedom to design our own week! 🙏🏻 Had a spontaneous trip to Cleveland in the middle of the week to hang with friends, workout, & talk business 💯. Got to introduce our kids to some of the incredible people we look up to & get a great workout in as a family with our friends. We of course spent some time in the pool, the kids LOVE to swim! These moments are a perfect example of balance – between family, business, and homeschooling. Cherishing these moments with our kids, it all goes by so quick. I always get questions about my school schedule since I give an entire day to the outdoors, but getting outside hiking, moving, and exploring is a huge part of our homeschool, especially at this age and for these boys. They are learning so much in so many different ways and that’s not even acknowledging the benefits to mental and physical health. We get one childhood with them, and yes, school is important, but we need to stop pinning school and being out in nature against each other.
