Homeschool Philosophy: This is sort of a hard prompt to put into words. I’ve been homeschooling for 13 plus years, so my philosophy has changed some - but it’s basically the same as when I began! The main thing that has changed is our family style learning has evolved into Mercie being independent and Silas and Titus working together. It works well this way! The boys are close in age and best friends, and Mercie enjoys getting her work done on her own. I definitely believe in several Charlotte Mason-ish practices: - living books instead of textbooks - short lessons hold attention more effectively than long, drawn out lessons - narrations are great tools for gauging your child’s retention - nature study and outdoor time is a huge part of our life - we do lots of scripture memorization A few things we practice that aren’t CM: - my kids love hands on crafts and experiments so we do plenty of those - we like lapbooks and interactive notebooks My husband and I also enjoy teaching my children practical life skills such as: - cooking and baking - cleaning and organizing - gardening and outdoor work - farm chores - responsibility - handicrafts So I’m a nutshell, our family’s homeschool philosophy would be Charlotte Mason flavored with hands-on activities and (gasp) paper crafts!
