We did it! Traveled all the way across the USA in two months! From CA across the southern states to Louisiana, then up to NY, then back across through the middle states. Feels wonderful to be home, but also sad that that big adventure is behind us. Feeling so very grateful that we had no breakdowns, illness or injury. That we got to visit family, see national parks, experience history.. so many things! I'm glad I kept a journal. I already can't remember all we did! I only wish we had had more time to explore in each place and not have to move on so quickly. Some day we'll need to go across the northern states and the few we missed on our journey, complete our map. Just when you thought Las Vegas couldn't get any stranger.. enter #Area15 - "where nothing ever happens. If you heard of strange things happening here, you have been misinformed" according to the loud speaker outside. . We were all excited to enter the outrageous, alien-invaded grocery store of #OmegaMart. We found one of many secret entrances through the not quite normal store into the alternate dimension - #ForkedEarth. My girl gleefully ran through the strangeness where things just get weirder and weirder, looking for clues, trying to solve a mystery. . There is a whole story to follow, a mystery to solve, but it was again SO overwhelming for me. I walked through with my ears plugged & couldn't have tried to think if I had to. I would have really enjoyed the weirdness of it all if it wasn't so loud it was painful. The rest of the building had shops & other activities, but it was even louder outside Omega Mart. . We were beginning to lose our last thread of sanity, so my son & I finally went outside in the parking lot to wait, where it was just as loud! We sat as far from speakers as we could with eyes & ears closed, deep breathing. We really struggled to remain composed until our non highly sensitive people rejoined us. Another on the list of #placesHSPsShouldNeverGo My girl had really wanted to come here and she had a blast. #VivaLasVegas! We had tickets to the #LasVegasSphere Experience. It's pretty cool watching #theSphere change on the outside. Inside, was interesting, with robots to talk to or learn about new tech, but there wasn't nearly as much variety as I was expecting from the online description and it was SO loud, SO crowded, all flashing lights... There was nowhere to sit down until we went to our theater seats. I was completely over stimulated and had a meltdown. I'm sure hiking 3 miles across Zion this morning contributed to that. I tried standing in a corner with eyes & ears closed and slow breathing. I had to apologize to my family for snapping at everyone and being unable to function. They enjoyed it. Even my boy, who is also highly sensitive. I was a wreck. #placesHSPsShouldNeverGo I was better once we had some delicious Gluten-Free pizza later on at Flour and Barley, of all places. So good! And the highlight of our night was when Darth Vader (so random) came up to talk to my girl on the #LasVegasStrip. Dad valiantly challenged him, cane against lightsaber. No one talks to his baby girl, not even Vader. Oh, and that's Batman texting on his phone right behind them. I think we had more fun at The Rock Shop just outside the Royal Gorge, CO, than we did at the gorge itself! My #rockhound was in heaven. She talked rocks & minerals with the lady that worked there, looked at all the fabulous rocks and chose a few she didn't already have in her collection. We watched our geods get split open.. there were also fossils and local art. The Summit One Vanderbuilt experience is pretty amazing. We zipped up 100 floors in seconds in a dark elevator! Like being transported to another world. Walking through all the cool reflective surfaces felt like being in an M.C. Escher drawing. It was SO cool on a fogged in rainy day, I can't imagine how awesome it is when the NY skyline is reflected over all the surfaces. Almost every wall is window from floor to ceiling. Definitely would need sunglasses. Wish we could do it again to see the difference, but it was worth it even in the worst weather. Kids had never been in an #Ikea before, so of course we had to stop in to one in MD near our campground. It was actually suggested in our geography curriculum for Sweden to go to one, but we don't have one near home. Learned so much at the #Huntsville Space and Rocket Center in Alabama. I loved the Planetarium show and the retired #rockets. #spaceshipspaceshipspaceship !!! How HUGE they are! Just in case anyone can use this tidbit of knowledge from this 42 year old woman who has raised a billion kids at this point - If I see Sierra struggling with something my go to question- “ would you like my advice and help or would you like to figure it out on your own?” Obviously this is not for all situations, and I am always there as a sounding board etc but more often than not this question calms her down and 99% of the time she wants to and does fix it on her own successfully. We joined Harvest Hosts where we can stay at a variety of Farms, winerys, brewerys and places of interest. Last night we stayed at The Great Canadian Cider Company.
