This is my very first ever oil painting. I’ve been trying to expand my skills and learn different techniques and styles. Ultimately i’ve abandoned my creative self over the last 10 or so years and every once in a while I tell myself i’m gunna get back into it. I know we’ve all said that very same thing to ourselves many times. The truth is, i have been dealing with some severe depression, anxiety, and major downs for a very long time and this past year was really really hard. On the flip side, I started seeing a therapist over 6 months ago, got on medications that have helped immensely, and things are looking up. I feel much more regulated and I have been out of the heavy clouds of a severe depressive episode for at least 4 months now. I’m feeling much better overall and more optimistic and healthier and happier. This pikachu floating over the clouds happy as a clam is definitely a representation of how i’ve been feeling more lately. I know it’s derpy and not very good, but i’ve never used oil paints before and painting has never been my strong point. I’m excited to continue learning about the world of painting and hopefully i can actually commit and start posting more art on here! Anyways, I just wanted to share this little accomplishment. There is this belief that artists must have a style. Which is funny, because the pressure created by the word must for something that is naturally inevitable is ridiculous. Our drive is to create. Period. And, I will always create through my lens because that's how I see the world...hence my style. But that does not mean that I must create the same way, use the same materials, or present the same subjects forever. So this is happening. I have decided to switch my practice to watercolor. And I have no idea what that means yet because I don't know how to paint in watercolour. I just know that it's something that feels right for me. I will continue making my acrylic works until I am out of materials and then it's a full switch to watercolour. Hopefully I will have figured out some things by then. I have found a wonderful teacher who's work I adore, so I know I'm in good hands at least. This is a scary jump, but one I really want to take. So I invite you to follow along on my journey as I learn this new way to create. Keep in mind that my art education is bespoke and not classic, so there is a learning curve for me. There will definitely be some humorous results and some triumphs. I am trying to work through one tutorial per day. Eventually, I will feel confident enough in my work to move those creations to this account, but I am definitely not there yet!
