#terrybrooks #smallmagic I know I said I was pretty much done with Shannara as the series wasn’t really grabbing me, but I wanted to read this short story collection as it included a lot of characters from the books I’d read in their own miniature Shannara tales. And despite Brooks saying in his introductions that he is not fond of writing short stories, this is easily the best thing of his I’ve read. A large collection of varied stories, his writing here was mostly much improved over the novels, snappier, more to the point and differing plotlines kept this interesting. There were a few duds - one story seemed more like a recap of one of the original trilogy novels than it’s actual own thing - but generally this was more enjoyable read, and I appreciated having more complete character arcs from the Shannara volumes I have read. 📕📕📕📕

In celebration of #indiebookstoreday I’d like to share the story behind these pictures which tells you about all the love, serendipity, kindness, community and magic there is between writers and books and readers and bookstores.🌟 Last year, we moved our whole family back across the Atlantic to be closer to my mother, who had been diagnosed with late stage lung cancer. There were so many things we embraced about British life after seven years living in the US - and other things we wanted to keep going, like finding a team for our soccer loving middle, Somer.🌟 We found THE SUMMERTOWN STARS, a lovely girls team that met, came rain or shine, every Saturday morning. The girls and the coaches and the parents became our friends and our constant. Somer had so much fun.🌟 It turned out that one of her coaches, James Catchpole, of the awesome @thecatchpoles duo, was a picture book author! Of course we fell in love with his book, his story, his family (their two little girls, Viola and Mainie, became firm friends with our trio). 🌟 And then we said a rather sad farewell as they had become such a lovely part of our weekly lives, and headed back across the Atlantic. But a few months later, we found that James and Lucy’s second book, YOU’RE SO AMAZING had come out and was on the main display case at our local indie, @gibsonsbookstorenh! I had to pull my friend, the owner, @michaelherrmann101057 aside, and to show him the book and had Somer explain to him how she knew the author.🌟 The book world is small and perfectly formed and full of magic and its crucible is independent bookstores. Go there. Often. Make friends. Buy lots of books. "like sound and song" is a piece that asks "what else is there?". it's fueled by wonder and curiosity, and it's a question without answers. it's also a question that every single thing we do is really trying to answer; everything we study, every poem we write, every piece of faith we have, every moment we stop in awe of something -- they're all fueled by that. I love science and math and things that seem to have a clear "yes and no" dichotomy. but I also love art and magic and wonder. and I don't find that these ideas conflict. "Fact and magic go together like sound and song, like ink and poetry, like truth and metaphor. A good metaphor does not destroy the truth. It brings it home to a human context". For me, magic, art, science, wonder... they're all about meaning. they're all an act of interpretation. they're all made of the same kind of wonder. while some try to attain answers sought after in reality, others try to answer the stuff of dreams. and so "like sound and song" asks what lies beyond reality, and tries not to answer. #abstractart #inkpainting #canadianartist #smallmagic

This combination of figwort, wild sunflower and clove, is said to soothe and increase the circulation of the blood. I find that it also soothes and increases circulation of energy in the home. Occasionally people give me a piece of their writing to read, people who aren’t writers in a full time, published sense but who, deep in their souls, love to put words on the page. 🌱 They write in secret, with no audience. They hand me their pages tentatively, heads bowed, often apologetically but under that, I also sense the excitement and the hope that I might like it. This happened the other day with my yoga teacher who’s written a story from his travels in India. He slipped me an orange envelope at the beginning of class. 🌱 It reminded me how brave and beautiful it is when anyone writes something and shares it. I am so moved by people who write - who create anything. We need to celebrate these tender moments, to nurture them, to let people know how important it is to put things into the world, when they share a part of who they are, of their spirit and humanity. Not because they will become bestsellers or win prizes, but because when someone makes a piece of art, it seeps into the ether of our world and makes it better. I believe that with all my heart. According to the holiday’s official website, “[Wolfenoot] is when the Spirit of the Wolf brings and hides small gifts around the house for everyone. People who have, have had, or are kind to dogs get better gifts than anyone else. I've been pretty burnt out the last few weeks, so I've taken a bit of a break. I've had deep talks with good friends, listened to a lot of podcasts and great music, gone for long walks in the woods and taken several long hot baths. And today the wee one and I went on a big adventure to explore a new forest with an interactive nature museum and a VERY high up suspension bridge. And then we ate french fries. 🦌 🦷 Yesterday afternoon, I spent a few hours making notes on an idea for a short story. It had within it a doe crossing a road with her babies. And a little girl losing a tooth. 🦌 🦷 Fast forward a few hours, in real life, and my 6 year old came home with a tooth, hanging on by a thread, ready to pop out at any moment. And when driving home from soccer with her dad, she said they saw a mama deer with her baby crossing the road. 🦌 🦷 The magic of life and fiction.
