Just another day at the plant indeed. 20 varieties of squash were transplanted today (along with some direct seeding just in case and because why not lol)... along with peanuts and soy beans in the trial beds... cukes, dill, and Kentucky wonder pole beans are in... basil starts are tucked around the tomatoes... and we added 2 more fig trees to the back corner. Our first chicken tractor! Currently, our chickens are pretty much free range. Our dogs are their protectors for the most part. However, having our dogs around is not enough. Our chickens also love to get in our garden and feed off our vegetables🫠 We ordered this simple tractor online and assembled it over the weekend. During the warmer months, our chickens will be living it up in their new quarters around the farm… and in the cooler season, we are gonna wrap it to make a greenhouse to sustain us during the winter. Love the versatility/simplicity of this tractor. You become creative quick when living off the land. 😂

Today we want to take time to talk about what we mean when we say our chickens are “rotationally grazed”. We will touch on what we feed our chicken in a future post! . By definition from Merriam-Webster, rotational grazing is the shifting of livestock to different units of a pasture or range in regular sequence to permit the recovery and growth of the pasture plants after grazing. . For our “meat birds” as we call them we follow that definition very closely. For us, once our birds reach the size they can safely survive outside (for Cornish that’s typically 3.5 to 4 weeks old and/or fully feathered), we put them outside in what we call our “chicken tractor”. This “tractor” is a mobile house/coop for them that is easily moved. You will see various designs for these but the main purpose is for easy movement of birds while keeping them safe from predators! Once the birds are in the “tractor” we typically move them once a day for the first few weeks and then twice a day the last week or two before processing day! This ensures they get new fresh grass (and bugs) everyday and that our grass gets a break before we rotate a new set of birds grazes on it. Chicken poop is high in nitrogen and great fertilizer! . Every homesteader/farmers “sequence” or how often they move their livestock will look different. I will say we had two main reasons for choosing to rotationally graze. First, it seemed like it was best for our birds. They get a new fresh area everyday to scratch around and act like chickens. Second, meat birds poop A LOT, and when I say A LOT I truly mean it! 😳😳 By rotationally grazing we spend a short amount of time moving the birds rather than spending a longer period of time constantly cleaning a single confined area. . I know that was a ton of info so if you made it this far kudos to you and thank you! We hope that you learned something new today! We also hope that when you’re buying from your local farms that you ask questions, most of us will happily answer questions about our practices! 🥰

This five-day farm summer camp is from 9am to 2pm daily for kids ages 5 to 13. Campers will learn a wide range of skills necessary to live and work on a farm. Summer camp days include working together to complete a farm chore, a farming lesson where they will learn a new skill related to farming/animals/nature, a daily craft or food related activity-AND, fun on the rock wall, treehouse and trampoline. Campers will also get to enjoy plenty of play time & animal time, balanced with down time. Or maybe Wilderness Survival Summer Camp July 8-12 or July 15-19 is more your child’s style. This five-day camp is from 10am to 3pm daily for kids 7 to 13 will teach basic skills necessary in a survival situation.
