Late afternoon woodland walks 🌳 Grayson’s packed off for a weekend with his nanny, leaving us to have some quiet time with Ottilie. It’s odd - I feel both relieved to have a calmer home but super guilty that he isn’t here with us. Motherhood with two has been such a crazy mix of emotions, far more than I anticipated honestly. Frank is back at work as of Monday so I’m looking forward to gaining a little routine and figuring out how our days are going to run from now until September.

Florida might not be for everyone, but I don't know where else you can live down a dirt road on 10 amazing acres and also get to a beautiful beach in 15 minutes! As a parent and a physio, I feel a huge responsibility to teach my kids how to keep their minds and bodies healthy. Keeping them active, showing them new sports and activities, and allowing them to experience different challenges are so important. This can be a huge juggle though! We’ve recently had some new success with orienteering. Having rocked up to the next event last night, in a solo parenting situation (Ali was dealing with a water leak of unknown origin 😬) with three kids in tow and only one who wanted to do the course, I had a brief moment of ‘how am I going to do this??’. I couldn’t leave the older two in the car as it was roadside parking, which I just wasn’t comfortable with. Luckily for me, we weren’t far from The Grandparents and they swooped in to save the day 🥰🥰. So, after dropping the older two off, Neve and I shared a lovely hour of evening sunshine running around a fell top talking about navigation, how to read a map, what features to look out for, and just enjoying each other’s company 🥰. 💛 Hello Spring 💛 Life on our allotment is pretty epic 🙌 It is an absolute work in progress 🙈🤣 But all of the Little Buds are LOVING spending time there, digging, watering, bug hunting - it's fabulous. The sandpit, wildlife pond and investigation station that were on the Little Buds wish list are now permanent fixtures and we've taken on the neighbouring plot too 🙈🤣 so there's even more space for us to dig and grow. One Little Bud brought in his own bug box today to collect specimens like Darwin himself, and we did some research in our nature books to identify the creatures we found! Credit to @kayteshouseplaycoach 💦 “This is wonderful!” 💦 We get so many incredible comments from passers-by when we are out who often stop and engage with the children; we LOVE our community. What really stands out though, is how many people say it’s so rare now to see children out getting muddy, wet or messy, and engaging with the natural world around them. THIs is why I’m so driven to do more and more to get back to basics whilst supporting all areas of development. There is SO MUCH value in natural, stripped back, messy, risky, outdoor play. We know we can extend it to meet every need, but at the same time the children are more engaged, more creative, more resilient, more independent, more content. I love that the early years supports a natural, slow pedagogy, and I love that this is how we spend our days. 💚 P.s; Today we packed our books received from the REACHout Early Years Stronger Practice Hub East of England training that I took part in on Saturday. Another beautiful and adventurous day in the forest. We’ve loved watching the seasons change this year during our weekly forest day. Right now the tadpoles are growing legs, the buckeye trees are flowering, the grasses are tall and thick, and the creek is surprisingly full for this time of year in California. I noticed today how much the children gross motor skills have really developed since September. Their balance, coordination, climbing ability, body awareness, and endurance for longer hikes is really evident. We only have 3 more Forest days in this school year, so we are soaking up every wonderful moment.

So, following on from my previous post about tackling Ingleborough in a storm…yes we did reach the summit! And this is how you descend…with a hop skip and a jump! 😄 But…lil man and I did get lost on the top (second time it’s happened 🤦♀️)! Swipe for those trig point views 😬 That’s us walking off to tap the trig. Lil man had trig fever and it’s not obv a full climb until you tap the trig! Clare offered to stay at the edge so we knew which route to descend on. But we somehow ended up unable to find her in the fog 🤦♀️ Turns out What’s App works at 724m !! So I asked her to share her location with us and it worked 😂

What is 'place-based pedagogy' and why is it important? Pedagogy is the foundation for educator's practice impacting curriculum decision making, relationships, teaching and learning. 'Place-based pedagogy' involves educators' knowledge of and connection with the setting, community or context. This knowledge influences their planning and practice to support children's engagement with, connection to and learning about the land, places and community. Children's connection and learning is supported through experiences both inside and beyond the service gates. Learning outcome 2, of the EYLF states, "Educators support children's learning by providing experiences connecting children with the community and environment beyond the early childhood setting..." (V2.0, 2022, p. 41). Place-based pedagogy has been linked as a distinct feature of early childhood education and care in Australia. The EYLF V2.0 describes, "This pedagogical approach is particularly important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their connection to land and places should be explored with local Elders and community members in culturally responsive ways" (2022, p. 67). Ironically, the animal I swore I'd never try again is the first one I've brought home! We have baby ducklings! Six 4 day old baby girls that will eventually get to free range on our pond during the days! The kids and I are over the moon, and the entire experience of ordering baby ducklings from a professional hatchery has been amazing.
