Fritillaria is a genus of about 100 species of bulbous plants. The flowers are usually bell-shaped, nodding, and come in a variety of colours. Here we have the orange, Fritillaria imperialis or Crown Imperial, and also the Fritillaria persica or Persian Lily. The Fritillaria persica can have over 30 pendant bells. These plants are hardy and thrive in zones 4-8. Plant them in groups to add a dramatic element to your garden. They need full to partial sun, and are drought tolerant once established. Take a walk in the gardens and look for these showy flowers. Or you might take a walk in the hillsides in the Okanagan and find another kind of Fritillaria, Fritillaria affinis or Chocolate Lily. @levenshall We made a special trip up to Levens Hall last weekend for my birthday. It was a great day The Hall was beautiful and inviting especially with the open fires in the rooms. Nicely decorated All the staff were fantastic and welcoming giving lots of history and talking to everyone. They must have been tired after a long day. They kept sweeping the snow off the steps into the house. As a gardener my shots of the garden will speak for that. The topiary garden is magical and one could easily spend hours looking around whatever the weather. Great shop and cafe A new addition since our last visit was the bakery. We had coffee and flapjack which was beautiful. Silver variegated holly tree The leylandii hedge was finished so I moved onto the holly tree which was considerably higher than the leylandii. The houses behind the leylandii hedge are 2 storeys so that will give you some idea. I don't normally go this high these days 😂. I had both Luke and Tom footing the ladder and tbh the holly had a great holding point so it gave me the confidence for the climbing and job. First I used the echo HC 2020 followed by an echo pole hedge trimmer to get the reach as this holly was very wide. I finished the top but we will have to do the sides next time. The laurels also will get a trim so they finish just above the hedge. Like I say ' it's not bad for me ' I'm happy with that job especially at that height. New garden I was out with one of my team's at this new garden in Horbury. It is a beautiful garden with a lot of interesting shrubs and trees. It has a lot of David Austen roses most of which are a traditional old style. I've not seen so many varieties before and I had to just confirm with the customer on the pruning of these as some could well have been none pruning varieties. Winter flowers There are so many flowering plants in the winter to choose from. In this garden we were working at today it was full of colours. Nearest is a viburnum bodnantense which is deciduous but has beautiful white to soft pink rosettes of scented flowers from late October throughout the winter Followed by mahonia possibly japonica as this one flowers late autumn to early spring. The view of our garden this afternoon before I went out to our second garden of the day. The autumn colours are still looking great although the orange leaved Acer palmatum dissectum has dropped it's foliage Love the blue 💙 sky reflection in the pond and my neighbours window. Weeding Thought it was time to weed this border after I had picked the pumpkin. I use a fork hoe. Great for digging weeds out. Better than any other type of hoe. Strimming Last Friday was a great test for our new starter Beth to know we carry on regardless in the rain ☔☔☔ We all know what type of day it was. Those clouds really show it. Spring planting It's that time of the year when the summer bedding is either dying off or needs moving to a dry and frost free place without too much condensation so it doesn't rot off like a room in the house, conservatory or slightly heated greenhouse. Now I'm preparing the seasonal pots for planting with a great selection of plants and bulbs I've bought from @harpinsgardens garden centre today. Luke and I trimmed this hedge yesterday we Stihl hedgetrimmers I used the Stihl hedgetrimmer HSA 100 for the sides and used a petrol medium handle Stihl for the top. This looks quite amazing. Great job my Luke with the top. Super sharp and smooth. Tom did an excellent job of cleaning up our mess. Total team work. We used Milwaukee blower's to tidy up. The Milwaukee blower is quite awesome as is probably the best one on market from what I have used so far. Sunny seating area The chrysanthemums really do make this seating area look pretty. It was quite a pleasure sitting here for a few moments of reflection of the day. Changing the outlay of this display from time to time does give the garden and sitting area a different look and design. Softening the hardness of the wall and paving gives a more tranquil and relaxing outlook. One doesn't really notice the path going into the seating area. Nice warm day It's been a beautiful day here in Horbury, the first sunny day in nearly a week with some autumn 🍁 warmth. The greenhouse reached 24c which has brought the aubergine back into flower. Sunday office day My usual Sunday working in the office. Preparing for the week ahead and sorting out some new gardens which need putting into routes. Stihl hedgetrimmer HSA 100 I thought I would take out a new hedgetrimmer HSA 100 which was supplied by @balmers_gm on Monckton road industrial estate in Wakefield. It's so quiet 🤫🤫🤫 It cut through the pyracantha hedge in the front garden of this house really well. Struggled a bit on the euonymous near the house so I had to use another. Overall I was happy with it. I've been working with a couple of my team's today in multiple gardens In Sandal, Walton, Wakefield and Thornhill near Dewsbury. Another pumpkin I've found another pumpkin starting to grow since I picked the large one. We will have to see how it grows and if it will mature before the end of the month. It has to mature before the first frost. As you can see the plant has basically taken over the bottom of the garden I think I might have to drastically reduce it and see if it puts all its growing energy into the pumpkin. Greenhouse produce Red peppers have come on well in the last few weeks and now they are ready for picking so the next group can ripen. Normally you would pick them as soon as they are ready except we have been eating tomatoes and aubergine 😊 The cucumber has decided it wants to come away from the window where I was trailing it and now growing on the chillies and peppers. If you open the picture up you will see plenty of cucumbers coming on. I still have plenty of chillies which I can't give away 😂. Maybe they are too hot to handle 😜. I'm trimming a laurel hedge at a property adjacent to the hotel next door. This echo hedge trimmer HC-2020R is just great Light and durable for topiary and soft trimming and still able to do hard graft as well.
