By now, we all understand that cults operate on psychological manipulation - often times hooking people in by starting with a base line principal or thought that actually seems reasonable or understandable. Once your in, the brainwashing begins, and we slowly make our way to crazy town from there. However this cult, in my opinion, sounded crazy from the start, and certainly didn’t do much to mask their unorthodox behavior. The series documents the Love Has Won religious movement (aka cult) which was led by Amy Carlson, referred to within the group as "Mother God", who described herself, among other things, as the creator of the universe. Amy grew up in Texas, from a far from perfect but regular family, had 3 children, a career, and a seemingly normal life. Until one day, she decided to get into new age philosophy - which led her to completely abandon her family, and follow around a leader who told her she was God, eventually leading her to create her own movement. What is unique about this documentary is many members of the cult participated - many of which are still believers - giving us a true inside look into how things operated. They shy away from nothing, warts and all - yet come across so far away from reality, it’s almost comical. 🔥🗣: The opening sequence is one for the ages. I don’t want to give anything away, but OH BOY. Truly, what in the world, would possess these people to get to this level of delusion? As indicated by the tortured dust jacket, I’ve been fighting with finding time to read this book for the past month. ‘Conspirituality’ is a collection of tales from the dark side of self help and spiritual wisdom. It covers the questionable/harmful beliefs of the biggest names in the “Conspirituality” sphere — ranging from YouTubers to present presidential hopefuls. Conspirituality refers to when people fall deep into spiritual wormhole (via internet, yoga, self-help, religion, etc etc) and come out the other side with a tight grip on harmful ideologies like anti-vax, covert racism, protecting abusers, and belief in things like q*an*on. It does a lot of work to expose the harms done by the so-called Conspiritualist influencers of the day. While it fall squarely into my personal interests and fascinations of the last few years, I don’t know that I would recommended this book as your first delve into the crazy underbelly of society due to its density and niche references, I would highly recommend it to someone who has some prerequisite knowledge of the sphere. One of my favorite documentaries is Einstein's Brain (1994), which chronicles one man's obsessive and utterly unrelenting quest to find Einstein's Brain. Replace 'Einstein's brain' with 'forgotten film', and this becomes a quest many, many of us can relate to all too well. Directed by Kevin Hull, this is the Japanese Pony Canyon VHS release. The film was originally screened as part of BBC Arena's Relics series, received some festival play, and later also aired on Swedish TV. THE DEEP END - 2022 DOCUMENTARY "A look inside the world of one of today's most controversial spiritual teachers and her dedicated followers." PK REVIEW: New age spirituality can be a real shit show. This documentary shows us how people who see themselves as chosen ones or prophets seems surprisingly to not having it all figured out. This lady is scary because she organizes role play session for reliving trauma and random people come up with souvenirs that they attach to abusers they never met. I don’t see the appeal in wanting to feel worse and letting strangers invent trauma that is untrue. I mean you will never be sure of people’s intentions or mental state. Modern age medicine has its own limits but at least there is a system that more or less is there to protect you. In those cults, I mean the moment they are making tons of money out of « healing » you can never be sure of their intentions. This lady has no answers for people who are not able to heal with her. She basically tell them to end their lives and to exit her life asap. Any methods can work if you believe hard enough, it doesn’t make it true or false, it makes it true for people who believe it’s true. So the moment it doesn’t work on someone, well they will blame themselves and possibly act on their darkest thought. As all the cult they don't seem toxic until you join the elite committee that lives and breathes with the leader. You can witness domestic abuse happening live in this documentary which can be triggering. If someone is not aligned, enlightened enough, they will see outsiders as ennemies. The series starts with his childhood in Indiana to his journey of gaining followers and moving to California, all the way to creating Jonestown in the Guyanese jungle. The entire series is told by authors and Jonestown survivors themselves. The footage used, especially in his early days, is also incredible; to really feel like your watching history and your experiencing his evil presence is so eerie yet mesmerizing. Myself being born in the early 90’s i only ever heard of the mass suicide, i knew nothing of Jim Jones really, but most importantly i knew nothing of the mass murder. I was solely under the impression it was a mass suicide. The importance of this documentary really is the fact that these people were murdered. They did not take their own lives willingly. This had to be the best mini-series documentary i’ve recently seen. Looking for a cult-theme true crime documentary? Here are some I can recommend 😃 Jonestown: The Life and Death of the Peoples Temple (2006): This one I saw some years ago. It provides a in-depth look into the cult lead by Jim Jones and the mass suicide of his followers. A crazy and sad tale on how people can be swayed to do things they normally wouldn’t do. It’s a PBS video so it may be harder to find. Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (2020): This one was quite interesting and bizarre. Focuses on the UFO cult Heaven’s Gate. It goes into detail with videos and audio along with firsthand accounts. I really enjoyed this series. It can be watched over on HBOmax. Wild Wild Country (2018): This one focuses on the Rajneesh cult that took up residence in Oregon. Most of the craziness came from Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh’s assistant Ma Anand Sheela. She would spy on the members, have crazy publicity stunts and even tried to release a biological “weapon” against those who didn’t like the Rajneesh cult. This one was truly wild! WeWork: or The Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn is a documentary that tells the story of the company WeWork. As someone who has had a variety of jobs, seasons of unemployment, and been self-employed over the past 5 years, I was familiar with WeWork. From my understanding they were co-working spaces designed specifically for freelancers and small business owners. If you need office amenities but don’t want to commit to leasing a building, or if you want to get out of your house and network with fellow entrepreneurs, WeWork provided an office space where people could come work and network. Admittedly I saw the appeal of these spaces, yet could never bring myself to pay to go work somewhere when I could just work from home. . I had no idea that WeWork’s founder was promising to change the world. I had no idea that the company was grossly overvalued and burning through millions of dollars at record speed. I had no idea that the company resembled a cult with a leadership team who essentially demanded to be worshipped. This may seem like a documentary about a boring startup company, but if you’re a fan of true crime and cults I highly recommend taking a trip down the WeWork rabbit hole.
