1989 was the first time I completed my National lifeguard standards. I was 16 yrs old and fresh off ten years of competitive swimming. The standards were a breeze and I took my fitness level and swim experience for granted. Today, because I was off work for my surgery for the past 2 months, I had to do my standards to return to work. The most challenging for me is the brick retrieval. Especially at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre because the deepest section (where the brick is placed) is a whopping 16 feet deep and the brick weights 20 lbs. I’ve always had ear issues, so the decent kills my ears. They start squeezing and popping after about 2 metres. Once I finally reach the bottom, grab the brick and begin swimming back up to the surface I look up expecting to have reached the surface, only to see the glassy water above and know that it’s going to be a few more seconds before I can take my next breath. It feels like forever. It’s almost a feeling of claustrophobia, and I know if I drop the brick I’ll just have to repeat the whole process again from the start. As I get older and slower I get more anxious, and today was no exception. I’m definitely making progress. I’ve gone from 3 to 5 reps, and I’m able to get higher on my consecutive reps. I’ve seen the most progress with my dead hang - started at 30 seconds and up to a minute now. I also just added on hanging knee raises. The second part of the tour was a visit to the popular city markets to learn how the people of Ho Chi Minh shop for their meat, seafood and vegetables. Located in the heart of Chinatown, the Binh Tay Market is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in the city. Established in the 1880s and rebuilt in the 1920s, today it’s home to more than 2,300 stalls selling spices, preserves, baked goods, clothes, shoes, bags, household items, jewellery, silver, gold and so much more. John and I loved walking through the market, talking to the local vendors and trying a number of foods we don’t have access to in Australia.
