Walked around Sydney like a tourist yesterday! Proof provided by my cheesy selfies I took in front of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. It was just delightful to wander around carefree for a couple of hours, forget all the poopy life stuff, by myself, in the gorgeous sunshine. 😍 Then, I had a leisurely lunch with a book by the water at Walsh Bay. I never lunch alone (not even at home because of my canine companions) but I think I rather enjoyed it! Might make it a regular thing. 🤔 Then I hung out with one of my best writing buddies, Pip Harry. We decided against cocktails or champagne and opted for a more indulgent hot chocolate! Yes, we are officially old and boring. Writing books with Pip is the actual best, and so are our books! 😃 And then I HAD MY FIRST EVER PROFESSIONAL PHOTO SHOOT OMGOODNESS WHO EVEN AM I???!!! 👀😱 Suffice to say, despite life being super mean lately, yesterday was wonderful and offered the first of many new experiences for me. I had an interesting #kidlit chat yesterday with some fellow children's authors and the topic of non-fiction books was a hot topic 📚 There's definitely an upward trend in #childrenspublishing and the interest in this area! As a writer for children, are you seeing this? 👀 I have huge respect for non-fiction children's authors! I've been working on an idea after a meeting with a publisher at @londonbookfair but I haven't found my voice yet and I'm not going to force it 🤔 The discussion was whether #kidlitauthors should move over to non-fiction and follow the current trend? Non-fiction books are an amazing tool for children. They help with their 👉 curiousity, learning journey and understanding their place in this world 🌎 But ... Don't forget... ! 🛑 Non-fiction teaches children through INFORMATION 📈 Fiction teaches children through IMAGINATION ✨ Both are just as creative! ❤️ Both play an important role in childhood! Don't force your writing journey, trends are good to keep us from staying stagnant in what we do. The blue copy of 'Ruskin Bond’s Children Omnibus' still sits, prominently propped, in the steel bookcase in my room back home. That was vaguely my first encounter With Grandfather and his private zoo of unusual animals, Binya and her blue umbrella, Nakoo the crocodile who becomes the unexpected opponent in Ranji’s cricket match And the mischievous Pret who plays innumerable pranks. And since then, my love for the mountains has remained sempiternal. Sprinkled with the longingness to wander through the bustling bazaars of Dehra, having friends like Ranji and Koki and spending eventful summer holidays with someone like the eccentric Uncle Ken. In fact, when I first read ‘The Room On the Roof’, I had a fleeting fancy of getting a dog, only to name him Prickly Heat. And so, over the years, Book Fairs in Jamshedpur remained synonymous to buying at least one book by Ruskin Bond, as were summer vacations synonymous to sprawling on the bed with my nose buried and dreamily slipping into 'The Room of Many Colours'. Which is why, today, on Ruskin Bond’s 90th birthday, I thank him for his stories that stayed Like film reels in rickety, tin boxes Like cassettes that never got old Like letters read and re-read till memorised In the odd cracks and crevices, In the nostalgic afternoons of my sepia-tinted, childhood summers, In the English textbooks in school And straight into my adulthood, where as an ELT editor, I continue to revisit the same characters and stories. To Mr Bond, His timeless tales, And readers like me, possibly a little miffed, knowing that while we grind through office and meander through the slovenliness of everyday life, Rusty and Somi probably still cycle somewhere down the roads of Dehra.🍃
👋 So this is me! I’m not really one for jumping in front of a camera, but seeing as I have a book coming out next year I thought it might be nice to put a face to the name. I live in Aotearoa (NZ), even though I kind of feel like an honorary Aussie because of the wonderful Australian writing community. I’m a mother of two + two dogs (who are like two extra kids), and I have an amazingly supportive hubby who, when I said in 2016, “I think I want to become a writer”, encouraged me all the way, something I’m ever so grateful for. I’ve been writing seriously since 2016, but I’ve written my entire life (that, however, was purely for me). I write predominantly junior fiction and middle grade, but I also dabble in picture books and YA. And, I’m learning to illustrate picture books and junior fiction in the gaps (of which there don’t seem to be many at the moment!). Pre-kids, I was the owner of a company called Trees Please, which gifted baby trees (including native) in sustainable wooden boxes. Safe to say, I LOVED it. Prior to that, my past roles have included helping small-large businesses navigate the business excellence criteria, gym manager at a large arena, business development manager, personal trainer, massage therapist, web designer, spinning instructor, and DJ. Yes, DJ! I love writing. That’s obvious. It’s one of my most favourite things to do (other than hanging with the people I love, of course). I also enjoy art, swimming, the beach. I very much love the simple things, try to stay in the present, and I’m not only incredibly grateful for what I have, but I fully appreciate the privileged position I’m in, to live in such a beautiful country like Aotearoa. My debut middle grade novel is out next year with Scholastic Australia and I’m very excited for this book baby to appear in the world. A lovely day had. Time with my family. Lunch with my mum. A walk with my dogs. And a beautiful vibrant sky this evening. 😍 This weekend has been a complete reset. Lazing in bed, watching documentaries, eating far too much food, and just reminding myself of how lucky I am to have the family, colleagues, and the opportunities I do. It's easy to lose sight of that sometimes. Next week I will be typing THE END on this first draft and I am very excited. Of course, it doesn't mean that's it. It just means the hard bit is over and my favourite part of the process begins! This #writingwednesday I'm reflecting on all God has allowed me to do. I love to write. Rebus stories are probably my favorite. 🤩 My first rebus was published a year ago and guess what, I've got another one coming soon! I also love writing stories for boys since I'm raising a couple myself. 😉 Then, I've tried my hand at poetry and kids' devotions. Guess what else is coming soon? 😉 God has also surprised me with a couple writing awards. All glory to Him because I never thought I'd accomplish that goal. I'm still pinching myself because I just learned my debut picture book received the Christian Editor's Choice award for excellence! 🏆😮🙌 Wow God!
