Karel’s journey began in 1948 when he fled Czechoslovakia to join his wife Sasha, a Czech national ski champion who had defected after competing in the 1948 Olympics. Their remarkable story enriches the history of the ski lift, symbolising their enduring contributions to Thredbo’s ski culture. After 21 years in Thredbo, Karel and Sasha moved to their farm on the Alpine Way in 1980, where Karel remained until his passing in 1993. Despite a skiing injury in 1961 that ended his racing career, Karel remained passionate about the sport and dedicated himself to supporting children’s skiing. He was a founding member of the Thredbo Ski Racing Club in 1972 and its first patron in 1979. Today, Karel’s T-Bar lift, situated high above Thredbo Village, is a lasting tribute to his legacy. Slowing down, seeing more… Back from three days camping with the kids at Wilsons Prom on Boonwurrung, Bunurong and Gunaikurnai Country. Moments of frantic, frenzy, tantrums, demands, frustration of course .. but also moments of wonder, joy, discovery and exploration. My 7yo’s empathy for a limping duck and her determination that we not ignore it. Her delight when a rosella landed on her head! My 2yo’s smile when he saw wombats and wallabies on our dusk and dawn walks. His fascination with every individual element of the whole and his blooming awareness of nature and his place in it. These three photos were taken while rambling along the Tidal River estuary mid morning, walking so much slower than I ever would alone, stopping so he could push his fingers into the sand, wiggle his toes in the water, point out the rocks and count the clouds. Blackdown Tableland NP, QLD @sandtosnow bringing the Saturday hiking inspo. Full of sandstone scenery with gorges, ferns and waterfalls, Blackdown Tableland lies at the NE edge of the central QLD sandstone belt. Covering approximately 47,950 hectares, this is an oasis! 🥾 There are a few great trails here - The Goon Goon Dina (Lightning Lizard) Walk. It’s a 2.5km/ 30m return loop that takes you past some Aboriginal rock art which is definitely worth the visit. Goodela is a 3.6km return walk which takes you to Yaddamen Dhina Lookout. You’ll walk into a beautiful eucalypt forest. The Mook Mook (Owl) Walk is a 2.4km/1 hour return walk and is an easy walk from the campground.Track heads east and ends the spectacular Mook Mook Lookout. The Gudda Gumoo (Rainbow Waters) Walk. This is a more difficult walk, ending at the base of an incredibly beautiful waterfall. Gudda Gumoo (Rainbow Falls) is a 4km walk down to the Blackdown gorge and past the sandstone plateau. This is the main highlight for Blackdown Tableland which takes you into the heart of Gudda Gumoo gorge and onto the famous Instagram rock pool (pictured). Horseshoe Lookout is also on the way to the Rainbow Falls car park. You can also 4WD here - follow the Loop Road, pass the sandstone outcrops, then stop at Mitha Boongulla lookout for great views of the surrounding plains. Suitable for high clearance 4WD vehicles only.
