Event announcement! Join us to discuss this electric debut novel, The Safekeep, with author Yael Van Der Wouden on Tuesday 25th June at 7pm at our bookshop, wine bar and social space. It's 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the war is well and truly over. Living alone in her late mother's country home, Isabel's life is as it should be: led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis delivers his graceless new girlfriend, Eva, at Isabel's doorstep-as a guest, there to stay for the season... Eva is Isabel's antithesis: sleeps late, wakes late, walks loudly through the house and touches things she shouldn't. In response Isabel develops a fury-fuelled obsession, and when things start disappearing around the house-a spoon, a knife, a bowl-Isabel' suspicions spiral out of control. In the sweltering peak of summer, Isabel's paranoia gives way to desire - leading to a discovery that unravels all Isabel has ever known. The war might not be well and truly over after all, and neither Eva - nor the house in which they live - are what they seem. Tickets are on sale at our website now.

"There is a time in all our lives, usually in our late teens, early twenties, when we're trying to find our place in the world and make sense of who we really are. New Beacon Books (@newbeaconbooks) on Stroud Green Road in North London helped me in that quest as a wonderful resource for black writing. It's where I learned of C. L. R. James and Darcus Howe, Benjamin Zephaniah and Linton Kwesi Johnson, writers who helped me understand who I am as a black Briton. It was at New Beacon Books where I got my copy of Samuel Selvon's 'Lonely Londoners', which brilliantly captured a changing capital city becoming multicultural, and George Lamming's 'In the Castle of My Skin’ about the alienation of a black man in a white world. But further afield, I gained a deeper understanding of the Caribbean and Jamaica, the land of my Windrush Generation parents, from books like Roger Mais’ 'Brother Man' and Sylvia Wynter's 'The Hills of Hebron'. V. S. Naipaul was also a favourite writer. Could I have found all these titans of letters in one place elsewhere? Like the very best independent book shops, New Beacon's inventory served its community and reflected that community and so it was fitting that when the store was threatened with closure a few years ago, that same community stepped in to save it. That is testament to New Beacon's own place in the world, its importance in the hearts of so many." - @thereelclivemyrie Everything is Everything by Clive Myrie is shortlisted for the Indie Book Awards Non-Fiction Award. "There are so many independent bookshops I adore: I love Primrose Hill Books (@primrosehillbooks), which is small and beautiful and immensely welcoming. I love Roundtable Books (@roundtablebooks) in Brixton, which champions Black writers and under-represented voices. I love Mostly Books (@mostlybooks_shop) in Oxford, where I have spent some of my happiest hours at events. But I think my favourite is The Children's Bookshop in Muswell Hill (@childrensbookshoplondon), which is run by the brilliant Sanchita Basu De Sarkar. It holds free story times - a riot of babies and toddlers and a real delight. They have a children's book club which is so hotly in-demand that the waiting list is a year long. The booksellers at the The Children's Bookshop work so hard to be part of the beating heart of their local community, and I admire them passionately for it. Nobody runs an independent bookshop for the glory or the money: there will always be easier ways to make a living. It's done for love: and you can feel that love vividly at work in The Children's Bookshop." - @katherine.rundell The Golden Mole: And Other Vanishing Treasure by Katherine Rundell, illustrated by Talya Baldwin is shortlisted for the Indie Book Awards Non-Fiction Award. "Stoke Newington Bookshop (@stokeybookshop) was my first local indie when I moved back to the UK after some time back home in Canada. I was nursing a broken heart (don’t know if you heard, but I got divorced rather young) and went in and bought Aftermath by Rachel Cusk in a way that was very emotionally intense for me and of course completely normal for everyone working there. I have come back for less heart wrenching reasons in the years since—birthday presents, cookbooks for dinner parties, lockdown puzzles—and often leave with something unexpected and wonderful suggested by the shop’s funny and thoughtful (and immensely knowledgeable) booksellers. I don’t live nearby anymore but it’s always worth the trip. Plus there is usually a dog or two in there." - @monicaheisey Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey is shortlisted for the Indie Book Awards Fiction Award. Kuninkaallinen perhe on pysynyt asiakkaana Kuningas Henry III ajoilta. 5 kerrosta, laaja valikoima. Kirjailijat tulevat tĂ€nne signeeraamaan uusia teoksiaan. RHS eli The Royal Horticultural Society on perustettu tÀÀllĂ€ v. 1804. 7: Ihana Kew Bookshop heti Kew Gardensin overground-aseman ulkopuolella. Kivat nekin, perjantain markkinoilla rauhallisempaa. NĂ€iden kuvien kauppojen lisĂ€ksi kĂ€vin ainakin Richmondin The Open Book -kirjakaupassa ja tietysti Kew Gardensin myymĂ€lĂ€ssĂ€, josta hankin kaksi Kewhin liittyvÀÀ kirjaa, vinkkikirjan pieneen puutarhaan sekĂ€ oppaan lauhkean vyöhykkeen kasveista. Ostin myös yhden matkakirjan, jossa vinkkejĂ€ retkikohteista Lontoon ulkopuolelle, kyliin ja rannikolle. TĂ€llĂ€ matkalla jĂ€i lĂ€hikaupungit ja kylĂ€t vĂ€liin, joten uusi reissu mielessĂ€ lĂ€hivuosina. Englannin puutarhoja unohtamatta

"South London is spoilt for choice when it comes to independent bookshops, but my favourite has to be @backstory.london in Balham. Not only is it a bright and beautiful space with a dazzling array of books for every reader, it also has its own cafĂ© and bar! Books, coffee and wine, what more could you want? Owner Tom Rowley and his staff are super friendly and eager to share recommendations: so much so that Backstory has a newsletter, a fiction book club and a non-fiction book club. The team is also brilliant at championing local authors, and I’ve been really touched by their support for Weyward at every stage of its publication journey. It’s been a thrill to see my book gracing its shelves, and I’ve popped in to sign copies and browse the latest offerings quite a few times! (I’m now the proud owner of several branded tote bags.) Backstory is a real jewel on Balham’s high street and I feel privileged indeed to live close by. Definitely take a look if you’re in the area!" - @emiliahartbooks Weyward by Emilia Hart is shortlisted for the Indie Book Awards Fiction Award. Discover the #IndieBookAwards at your local bookshop. Hiding behind a Ladbrokes, this charming time warp of a bookshop has been selling rare and out-of-print publications for over 50 years. Outside the striking bottle-green 18th century shopfront are tables of second-hand wonders for as little as ÂŁ2. Inside, you’ll find an old curiosity shop filled floor to ceiling with first editions, antiquarian allsorts and general miscellanea from which readers can unearth stern instructions on 1950s etiquette or dusty, jacketed collections of Christina Rossetti poems. Foster Books @fostersbookshop, as featured in An Opinionated Guide to London Bookshops by Sonya Barber @sonya_barber and James Manning, available to pre-order on our website now. đŸ“·ïž Ellen Christina Hancock @ellen.christina.hancock

📚 What this Week 📚 📖 What am I reading? Really enjoying The Cloisters so far. I’m just over halfway through. It has all the dark academia vibes I was after and I love the museum setting. The suspense is real. Also couldn’t resist the newly released King of Sloth ebook - Ana Huang has a hold on me 🙈 đŸ“ș What am I watching? Just went to see The Fall Guy last night and it was so much fun. Ryan Gosling can do no wrong and also loved the rest of the cast especially Winston Duke. I devoured The Flatshare adaptation. Such an endearing, lovely show so now I’m tempted to read all of Beth O’Leary’s books. 🎧 What am I listening to? The Tortured Poets Department. Mostly I have So Long London, Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?, and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart on repeat. Still obsessed with Stick Season especially The View between Villages, Northern Attitude, and You’re Gonna Go Far. 🎉 What am I looking forward to? Season 3 of Bridgerton is almost upon us!! The weather is finally warming up. I’m here for all the sunshine, iced lattes and lazy strolls through bookshops. Went to Daunt books in Marylebone this week and look how gorgeous it was! Love how they organise books by country too. How was your week? BOOKSHOP SPOTLIGHT Join me on a gorgeous bookshop tour of this stunning bookshop in Nottinghill, London đŸ€© @landragency A bookshop (and literary agency) founded in 2009, you can find this indie gem close to Portobello market road on a nice and much quieter Kensington Park Road and neighbourhood. They display shelves and tables of fiction, non-fiction as well as special sections on children’s books (downstairs), poetry and art books (upstairs balcony section). They also have other stationery accessories like gift cards and own branded totes. On their website they state that: The emphasis is on excellence in writing and narrative across a broad range of genres. The core stock was put together by canvassing hundreds of readers – writers, publishing contacts, friends (both adults and children) about which books they would most like to find in a bookshop. Every book stocked has its place because somebody loves it and has recommended it. Highly recommend a visit to browse the books and enjoy the beautiful interior of this bookshop. When I went yesterday it was a lot quieter than expected as I think many people visiting Nottinghill pop to see the famous Nottinghill bookshop (from the film). I much preferred this one!! Other was packed and overrated 🙊 Swipe to see all the photos I took. I loved the book decorations adorning the ceiling đŸ˜» The shelves of new hardback fiction definitely caught my eye! Postcard from my trip to London 💌 I am just back from a few days in London and man, I say it every time but I love this city so much, my favourite place on Earth. This time, I was staying in East London so I was very much looking forward to exploring the bookshop scene in the area. On the first day, I stumbled upon this wonderful vegan cafe (The Gallery Cafe) where I had some delicious waffles for breakfast (I’m seriously still thinking about them) which fuelled a day of hopping from bookshop to bookshop: Jambala, Common Press, The Brick Lane Bookshop and Libreria. Then it was off to Kings Cross where I boarded the magical Word on Water. The rest of the day was spent in Angel. On the Day 2, I met with book blogger extraordinaire @jacquiwine at the gorgeous Daunt Books Marylebone where we had a good browse and natter. Then it was off to Kentish Town which is a great area for second-hand book-shopping. I also finally checked out Walden Books and it did not disappoint, such a dreamy location. Finally, a little bit of culture with a visit to the Garden Museum. Day 3, which was the last full day, was spent thrifting in Kilburn, then a walk around in the always inspiring V&A and the trip ended with a thorough browse in John Sandoe, another mighty good-looking bookshop. Books were of course bought, tomorrow I will show you the titles that came home with me! 💌

BOOKSHOP SPOTLIGHT 📚 Closer to home today and spotlighting the beautiful @bookshopontheheath in Blackheath which is a secondhand bookshop with everyday reading copies to collectable modern first editions, fine bindings and antiquarian books. It also has original and high-quality reproduction maps and prints with original art by local artists. When the weather is nice as it is in these pics, the bookshop puts out boxes of secondhand books that you can pick up for ÂŁ2 or 3 for ÂŁ5 so a real bargain as I’ve found some new releases (even arcs as there seems to be a book blogger in the area
besides me..) Swipe right to see the beautiful shelves stocked with lots of vintage and rare books. In pic 3, you can find at the back of the bookstore to the right signed first editions of contemporary books in great condition đŸ€© Perfect for collectors. Don’t you just love visiting quaint old bookstores and shops lined up on a cute street? Swipe to see my sketches of two of them - Barn Owl Books and Octavia’s Bookshop. â˜ș I took this wonderful free class by Lucia @wildinksketch recently, in which she showed us how to sketch a couple of lovely bookshops in Cotswolds area, UK. She shared some interesting techniques to simplify our sketches, following the beautiful shopfront examples by UK artist Eleanor Crow (she has a book called Shopfronts of London). I was so fascinated by Eleanor’s sketches - they are so inspiring. I learnt how to simplify the curated window scene inside these shops, which is always the hardest part for me. Thank you very Lucia for your lovely class! â˜șïžâ€ïžđŸ™ #wildinkartclass @wildink_artclass #jayashreeusk2024 - all my urban sketches #bookshopsoftheworld #bookshopsoflondon @barnowlbooks_uk @octavias_bookshop #cotswoldsliving #cutebookstore #lovebookshops #marylandartists #artistsoninstagram #drawing #lineandwash #watercolor #watercolour #watercolorart #penandwash #watercolorpainting #watercolour #aquarelle #drawthisinyourstyle #drawthisinyourstylechallenge #dtiyschallenges #virtualtravelsketch #dailysketch #uskathome #watercolorartist #artchallenge #inkandwatercolor #aquarelle #sketchbookdrawing #handmadesketchbook

SUNDAY SHELFIE and latest new fiction and crime releases displayed by a bookshop fave of mine @foylesforbooks đŸ€© Had a simply lovely and wholesome Sunday with @savidgereads chatting all things bookish from the @womensprize longlist (faves so far and possible shortlist predictions) to insta reality check and reminding ourselves that it’s not just about numbers (the algorithm is against us all!) over lots of delicious dim sum đŸ„Ÿ (every meet up will involve food pls!) A meet up with book friends has to include a bookshop trip (hence this shelfie pic) and we did a good browse of book table displays (such good ones at Foyles!) to shelves. Simon and I heavily influenced each other on reads we loved (and maybe ones we didn’t love.. 👀) to ones we are guilty of owning but not read yet to ones that are on our wish list (spoiler: LOTS we both want to buy!) In this pic, I am spotting lots of reads I loved: Greta & Valdin, The List of Suspicious Things, The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne, Small Hours, One of the Good Guys. Ones I’m keen to read are The Night Alphabet and How to Bury Your Husband. Zoom into pic and let me know what books you spy that you’ve read and loved or ones on your wish list! #sundayshelfie #foylesbookshop #bookishfriends #bookshopping #bookshelvesofinstagram #bookshelfie

. . . . . . #bookishplaces #londonbookshops #london #londonreviewbookshop #bloomsbury #bookshopsoflondon #bookstoretourism #buchladenliebe #bookshopsofinstagram #literarytravel

It’s INDEPENDENT PRESS SATURDAY here at Waterstones High Holborn, our weekly focus on new publishing from the indies. Today we’re celebrating the release of Will Firth’s translation of ANOMALY by Andrej Nikolaidis. A future classic, Nikolaidis’ provocative and hyperactive dark comedy takes us to the very last New Year’s Eve ever. Yes, ever. If you like Bulgakov and Bernhard, this is for you. —— New Year’s Eve. The last day of the last year of human existence. A high-ranking minister criss-crosses the city with blood on his hands, a dying necrophile attempts to go clean before God, and a traumatized nurse is pressured into keeping a powerful secret. With undisguised glee, a nameless narrator unravels these twisted tales of moral turmoil, all of which are brought to an abrupt close by a cataclysmic collision of time and space. What will remain on New Year’s Day? In a cabin in the Alps, the last people on earth – a musicologist and her young daughter – search for a five-hundred-year-old musical score that might explain the catastrophe. Outside the cabin, hidden in shadow, a sinister figure waits for them to accept their fate. —— #bookstagram #igreads #bookshops #indiepublishing #highholborn #indiepresses #intranslation #translatedfiction #weekendreads #bookshopsoflondon #booksellers #lovebooks

April is going to be đŸȘ©đŸ•șđŸȘ© We are turning THREE this Friday (12th April) 🎂🎈 which means we will be celebrating! Watch this space for some exciting event news which we'll be announcing very soon alongside some extra perks for BookClub members. There are also so many incredible new books that have arrived in store to add to your piles: Death of A Bookseller - This 'horrible little book' about the obsession two polar opposite booksellers is as punchy as it's hot pink cover. The Husbands - When Lauren comes home from a hen party to the flat she lives in alone to find a man claiming to be her husband, she discovers that her attic can exchange one husband for another at will. Will one of them turn out to be the one? A funny, intelligent take on dating app culture. James - The new novel from Percival Everett, whose novel Erasure inspired the recent film American Fiction, is a take on Huckleberry Finn and is garnering incredible reviews. Hagstone - The debut novel from essayist Sinead Gleeson is one of the most anticipated novels of the season, about an artist who is invited to produce a piece of art for a mysterious commune of women on remote island. Caledonian Road - The brilliant new novel by Andrew O'Hagan combines a local Islington setting with brilliant writing and superb storytelling (check out our post last week for a full rec from our Manager Lucy). Our red indie bookshop editions are now in stock! By The River - Daunt Publishing's stunning series of essays collections (see By The Pond, In The Garden and In The Kitchen) continues with this gorgeous collection of essays about riversides. Contributors include Tessa Hadley, Amy Key and Caleb Azumah Nelson and we've totally fallen for the stunning cover. A Flat Place - The Women's Prize for Non-Fiction shortlisted memoir from Noreen Masud is a breathtaking love-letter to flatlands and the way that these British landscapes represent both inheritance and dispossession.

This is an all too rare First Edition, Hogarth Press 1923 printing on Duncan Grant, from the Living painters series. “Duncan Grant may almost be called a popular artist. He has not of course, a big popularity, nor is he ever likely to obtain it” If this is a rather bold introduction to the book, how pleased we are to report that they were categorically wrong ! After the most recent exhibition @charlestontrust it comes as no surprise that he remains a fascinating figure to re-appraise continuously through the years!! #bloomsbury #lgbtqia #duncangrant #bookshopcrawl #hogarthpress #charingcrossroad #vanessabell #henrypordesbooks #firsteditionbooks #firstedition @charlestontrust #booksbooksbooks #independentbookstore #bookshopsoflondon

I've been a tease with sharing this haul, but here we are now. I've done it. I've purchased it, I've hauled it across country lines, and I'm now sharing them with you. Am I embarrassed by this haul? No way, but I was embarrassed trying to move them around to balance the baggage allowances we had on the airport floor yesterday. Taylor was dismayed, looking at all 13 books (well, 14, including the book I already had on me from Melbourne). Here's the breakdown: First haul came from Waterstones on Gower Street, a purchase made with @lavelle.reads consisting of OURS, TREMOR and THIS IS SALVAGED. Second haul is from Daunt Marylebone and I picked up KAIROS for the International Booker longlist read and BLESSINGS because it's been on my list (but look at this cover, it is striking). Third haul exciting came from Oxfam Bookshop, they're secondhand but in mint condition and there, I picked up MY FRIENDS (I almost bought the hardcover version full priced at Waterstones), TASTE (because I was listening and loving the audiobook plus it has recipes that I wanna try), THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US (say no more, it's a Charco Press publication) and CALL AND RESPONSE. Final haul came from DAUNT on Cheapside and includes TAKE WHAT YOU NEED (can't find this at a reasonable price online in Aust nor in bookshops), BOOK OF ALL LOVES, FRESH DIRT FROM THE GRAVE and THE DOLPHIN HOUSE (haven't seen this in Aust too, plus the premise sunk its teeth into me). So, how did I go? Did the Leo in me go a little overboard? Mind you, this is the only haul you'll be getting for a long time as I'll be on my best behaviour again. London served me well! Currently reading KAIROS and THIS IS SALVAGED. Finished TASTE. #booksolacereads #bookhaul #bookpile #bookshopsoflondon #readingpile #bookworm

The hardback of The Orwell Tour was launched in North London (Hampstead), so inevitably the launch of the paperback must be in South London! This time at the enchanting ‘Books on the Rise’ in Richmond on the evening of Thursday 7 May. I will be interviewed and there will be talk and discussion, plus some champagne fresh from Reims following my return from France. Please PM me for an invitation if you are keen or around! I feel like my thoughts about George Orwell and travel writing seem to improve with each event, so it is set to be an interesting and stimulating evening #booklaunch #paperback #booksontherise #bookshop #bookshopsoflondon #richmond
