My birthday is next month, which means I am a Gemini, which means that I have (at least) two sides to my personality. As expressed yesterday, I have the sedate librarian fantasy...and then I have the ‘visceral response’ to color situation. Certain colors actually make my mouth water! So yesterday, after writing about the subdued, librarian life, I went out to my studio and painted this wongo bongo bright landscape/still-life. And I named it, “Ginger Jar Beach”. I imagined that you would be beach combing on a lush tropical island, and you would come upon washed up old Chinese ginger jars (you know like those amazing glass fishing floats people find!) And really, it’s not SO far fetched, because sea captains used to use those jars for ballast (basically rocks!) in the hold of their ships. How fun for treasure hunters to vacation at “Ginger Jar Beach”! Sometimes it’s all about the cover and sometimes it’s all about the spine! And here is a ‘new to me’ book twin! This is another version of Dent’s ‘Literture of Yesterday’ editions. This time it is Pride and Prejudice, in a blue faux leather with beautiful gilt work on the spine. Published in 1944, conforming to the war economy standard. Some of its contents are identical to the orange and black version (swipe to see), however there are a few extras in this deluxe blue one. Whilst you do get the same questions and the novel is reproduced in full from the third edition, (the same as the orange one), in adition, you do gain a 16 page Dent book listing at the back together with a few extra essay suggestions. On an interesting note, my blue copy contains a sticker from the bookseller Foyles. Foyles is still going strong. And following a quick dive into their web site - did you know William and Gilbert Foyle started their independent book selling business in 1903 when they began selling off their old text books from their kitchen table? And did you know also, that they telegrammed Hitler to ask if they could buy the books he was burning in the 1930’s?! 내가 좋아하는 런던의 장소. 내셔널 포트레이트 갤러리. 테이트 브리튼 갤러리처럼 영국이라는 국가가 느껴지는 갤러리다. 국가주의적 감수성, 그래 그냥 국뽕이라 하자, 그 감수성이 차오르는 공간이긴 하다. 내 입장에서는, 서점에 가서 영국 역사책을 뒤적뒤적하게 되고. 여튼 이 공간은 내가 생각하는 유럽의 전통이 현대적으로 해석된 곳으로, 안전하게 느껴진다. 생각과 일치하는 공간. 이곳 지하에 커피숍은 머리 위 유리천장에서 탁자 위로 떨어지는 빛이 멋진 곳이었다. 비 오는 날이면 비 그림자까지 떨어지곤 했다. 런던의 모든 곳에는 경비원이 지키고 서 있었다. 미술관이나 공공 회의장소에 들어가려면 가방 검사는 필수. 새로 만들어진 동선을 따라가다 그 커피숍으로 가는 길을 잃어버렸다. 미술관으로 진입하는 환경운동가들을 뉴스로만 접했는데, 그래서 미술관은 어떤 조치를 취하고 있을지 생각하지 못했던 것이다. 새로운 시대가 우리의 걸음을 다른 곳으로 이동시킨다는 생각이 들었다. 경비원에게 가방 검사를 받고 나니, 커피숍을 찾기까지도 작은 용기가 필요했다. 내가 관광객이나 미술을 좋아하는 사람이 아니라, 그저 무해한 사람이 된 것 같아서. 이게 무슨 상관이람. 있었다. 예술은 혼자 마음껏 느낄 수 있는 자유로움 그 자체니까. 새로운 동선을 따라가니, 내 기억으로 미술관숍이었던 곳이 비스트로로 바뀌어 있었다. 오드리 그린. 이번 런던여행에서 ‘미술관 숍’이 이렇게도 인기가 없을 수 있을까 실감한 적도 없다. 사람들로 바글바글하던 곳, 아마 나처럼 용기를 잃었거나, 널리 퍼진 카피라이트로 더 예쁜 고흐 엽서를 갖고 있거나, 그런 것일지도 모른다. 오드리 그린은 분위기도 음식도 쾌활하고 우아했다. 그림을 좋아하는 30-50대 영국 여성들을 만날 수 있는 장소. 이런 코스로 수정. 트라팔가 광장의 내셔널 포트레이트 갤러리에서 올해 영국인들은 누굴 가장 사랑하고 있나 살펴보는 재미 + 오드리 그린에서 브런치. *올해의 포트레이트 수상작 전시라도 만난다면 행운. *내셔널갤러리 건너편에 세인트마틴 교회. 지하 묘지로 쓰이던 곳이 카페인데, 쌀쌀한 날에는 이곳의 수프와 감싸주는 아치형 천장이 좋았다. 근데, 통유리 입구 만들고, London’s hidden cafe라고 쓰면 되겠어 안 되겠어. 안 가겠지… 채링크로스 로드에서 북러버만 채용하는 게 분명한 포일스 서점을 몇 층을 오르내리면 달고 따뜻한 무언가가 먹고 싶으니까, 서점 안에 있는 ‘제이스 재즈’에서 휴식. 약간 시끄럽고 복잡하고 옆사람과 너무 가깝고, 그 와중에 수제 케이크 너무 맛있어서, 런던에 살고 있는 느낌이 든다. 모두 노트북을 앞에 두고 조용한 요즘, 여긴 소음과 흥겨움이 남아 있었다. 계속 직진하면 토튼햄코트로드. 역에 이르면, 왼쪽으로 갈까 오른쪽으로 갈까. 주로 오른쪽인데, 러셀 스퀘어 공원이 있기 때문이다. 그곳을 지나면 블룸스버리 지역. 대영박물관과 사랑스러운 작은 서점들, 비밀의 중정이 있는 곳. 이런 루트는, 20년된 나의 런던 산책길 중 하나인데, 변한 게 거의 없었다. 다만, 나의 동선은 수시로 이루어지는 가방 검사로 다른 동선으로 안내되고, 내가 어떤 시간을 살고 있는지 일깨워주었다. 역 근처 나우빌딩의 미디어아트를 넋놓고 바라보다가, 이 날은 용기를 잃고 다른 곳으로 향했다. 가방 검사가 없는 작은 갤러리와 서점이 있는 사우스켄징턴으로. . . #london #foylesbookshop #raysjazz #audreygreen #nationalportraitgallery #cryptcafestmartininthefields
