Today I officially hit 70 pounds down. The scale has been moving slowly, but it's going!
Parent of a toddler. Emotional, drained, and I was sat on the floor crying. He isn't eating what he usually eats, he isn't going into nursery without screaming, he won't let me do the chores and I'm at the end of my patience. As a mum, you have ten million tabs open, and all of them have frozen. Trying to organise his play room to he can try to play independently, trying to give him less screen time, offer healthier foods, trying to meal plan, keep a house remotely tidy, washing, and keep on top of my own needs too. I understand this is part and partial of being a mum, but being a mum with chronic illnesses as well as having a child with limited independent play ability is tough. I have an amazing husband who helps where he can, but he has a stressful job and doesn't totally get it. I sat on the floor crying and he came and gave me a daisy. What a kind little boy. Stalls can be very frustrating and even scary (i.e. fear of surgery not working!). Let’s take a deep breath before we dive in 🙂 We’re in this with you! I’d say around 50% of our clients message us at the 4-6 week mark after surgery saying that they’ve stalled and asking what they can do about it. Below are the most common reasons for stalls early on after surgery… 👉 You transitioned to solid food this week. Our advice: Just breathe and carry on. Your body just needs a minute to recalibrate, your weight loss should re-start in 1-2 weeks. 👉 You are under-eating. We see a lot of patients who aren’t meeting their estimated protein goal, who are skipping snacks, and who are keeping portions very low at meals and snacks despite being hungry. Our advice: Start a food journal and start estimating your grams of protein to ensure you’re meeting your estimated protein goal daily. Eat every 2-3 hours (i.e. 3 meals + 2-3 snacks). Eat enough at your meals and snacks to actually satisfy your hunger. If you feel like your portions are “too big”, reach out to your dietitian for feedback. 👉 You’ve lost a very high amount of weight since surgery. Another thing we sometimes see is when patients lose weight VERY quickly in the first 3-4 weeks after surgery, their body then just needs a break to recalibrate before losing again. Temps are rising as we head into summer. What can you drink besides plain water to stay hydrated? Any clear, zero or low calorie/low sugar beverage can count towards your water goal! - Try flavorings like Crystal Light and MiO drops - You can also drink low calorie sports drinks: G Zero, Body Armor Lyte, Propel, Powerade Zero - If your taste buds find these drinks too sweet, try broth or herbal tea (chamomile, mint, ginger, cinnamon spice, etc.) or fruit infused water (add sliced fruits into your water bottle!) - Electrolyte powders and tablets can also be added to your water for flavor as well as to help boost water absorption into your body - Don’t forget that sugar free gelatin and sugar free popsicles (not ice cream bars) can count towards your fluids. Limit caffeinated beverages as this may have the opposite effect of hydration. Coffee, energy drinks, and caffeinated teas (iced tea, green/black tea) can cause some people to urinate more often, increasing the risk for dehydration. Beverages containing protein may not help much with hydration since protein can increase constipation. If your beverage has protein: protein shakes, clear protein drinks…then count these towards your protein goal instead of your water goal. Stay hydrated everyone! And remember, aim for at least 64oz or more of water and these clear liquids daily.
