In 1971, Stafford University run an experiment designed to observe the behaviour of 24 participants in a prison environment. Volunteers were chosen after a psychological evaluation that proved their emotional stability, and randomly assigned to being prisoners or prisons guards. The participants selected to be guards were instructed to prevent prisoners from escaping, while the participants selected to pe prisoners were instructed to obey the rules of the prison. Within hours of beginning the experiment some guards began to harass prisoners. Soon the prisoners began to have prisoners-like behaviour too. The experiment was supposed to run for two weeks, but on the sixth day it was ended due to excessive violence of the guards and emotional breakdown of prisoners. Take a minute now and think about your problem situation from Work - Ask yourself these questions about that conflict: • What unwanted behavior has my Downer been displaying? (DESCRIBE) • How can I tell my Downer the way I feel about this behavior? (EXPRESS) • What behavioral changes might I contract for? Also, what might I need to change in my behavior (SPECIFY) • What rewarding consequences can I provide to my Downer for sticking to the contract? (CONSEQUENCES) The acronym DESC (pronounced desk) abbreviates the four key phrases - DESCRIBE, EXPRESS, SPECIFY, CONSEQUENCES. You describe the offensive behavior objectively to your Downer, express how you feel about that behavior, specify how you would like to see that behavior changed, and spell out the consequences of such a change. The DESC components provide the main lines of an assertive script for your problem scene. It is not always necessary to say the entire DESC script. For some of you, standing up for yourself might not come naturally, or even feel impossible.
