Hey there, lovelies! Today, I wanted to share a bit about my recent travels. My time in NYC was a whirlwind. A lot of rushing around, some health issues, navigating bureaucracy, and braving some rather cold weather. NYC is an intense city, one which I love dearly but also a place that I feel is easy for me to disconnect from myself. 10 days into my trip, I realized that I felt drained and overwhelmed, like I was functioning on auto-pilot. I was checking things off my list of to do’s but wasn’t feeling too much. I was completely focused on external demands, and was losing sight of my own needs. That is when I realized that I really needed to create some more time for myself. Because let’s be honest, if we don’t make time for ourselves, it’s way too easy to become swallowed up by the daily hustle and bustle of life. So, when I realized that I was nearly running on empty, I made a decision to change the way I was doing things. I made some simple shifts like waking up earlier so I was sure I had time to meditate, to move my body, and to do things that nourish my soul, like reading, spending time with dear friends, appreciating nature and taking in the vibrant NYC art scene. These little changes had a big impact, aiding in my reconnection with myself, keeping me much more grounded and helping me deal with some challenging situations more gracefully. There is nothing new in any of what I am sharing here, it is more of a reminder that sometimes, small adjustments in our routines hold the power to bring about significant changes in our overall sense of wellbeing and presence. And I am also writing this to be completely transparent here that I offer self development work because I need to do the work too. I am currently writing this post from Portugal. Upon my arrival, meu amor took us to a beautiful spot in nature that felt very fairytale-esque. I am definitely feeling more #centered now and appreciating the simplicity and beauty of nature here. Surrounded by new moms, I felt both blessed and isolated, often asking myself, “What is wrong with me?” As many seemed to be navigating it with a lot more ease than I was. This question wasn’t helpful and sometimes led to a downward spiral. I had envisioned a certain kind of motherhood but often found myself deviating from it, facing harsh self-criticism as a result. Three months postpartum, transitioning from a passionate professional life decades prior to being home full-time with a baby was tougher and lonelier than expected, highlighting the importance of a supportive tribe and getting curious about why that is. In my weekly Shamanism class during that time (Divine timing), my teacher would remind us all, “Focus on your own dance.” This became my mantra and a reminder that our journeys are unique. Here, between not being who I used to be and not yet where I hoped to be, lies the bridge I’ve been intuitively shifting through a lot of inner work, healing, and growth. This wasn’t my first rodeo with mental health, yet it was a powerful reminder: We can never fully know someone else’s experience, but you don’t have to go through it alone. There’s no shame in seeking support—I have plenty, but the journey of transformation is deeply personal and something only you can walk. You must be willing to dive into your heart, be honest with yourself, listen closely, and intuitively feel the next step that feels right for you and then take it. Reflecting on the darkness and resilience of those days, I am grateful for the lessons and revelations that are still continuing to reveal themselves. The whispers, and invitations have gotten clearer and I believe it’s come from asking for support, doing the inner work, and inviting in what wants to emerge. I’ll admit it. I always loved watching Oprah. Her guests, the wisdom, the alternatives, the woo... the magic. She was a pioneer at the time, having a daily show, and I used to tune in faithfully at 4 PM from a very early age. Growing up with Oprah, I was introduced to seekers, teachers, and an alternative way of experiencing the world. It was like opening a door to a realm of endless possibilities. Oprah was a student of Maya Angelou, and there’s a quote of hers that’s been a mantra for me over the last decade: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” These words resonate with me. They remind me to continuously strive for improvement, and healing to acknowledge that growth is a journey, not a destination. Here’s something you might not know about me: I used to wrestle with ruminating and intrusive thoughts—a real uphill battle at times. Movement became my refuge, my escape from the mental exhaustion. But now? I don’t have the feeling I need to escape and I move daily because I want to, not because I need to quiet my mind. Copy is about connection. We want to create a connection with customers, and sometimes this can be achieved with a simple shift in the words we choose to use. In John Berger’s book “Magic Words,” he talks about the power of turning actions into identities. Turn that verb into a noun. Turn a step to take into a role to step into. This creates a picture in your readers’ minds, making your message more memorable. Consider this: “Will you help?” vs. “Will you be a helper?” The shift from a verb to a noun paints the picture of a person, a role to embody. It’s a subtle tweak, but it changes how the message lands. Another example: “Buy membership” becomes “Become a valued member.” Suddenly, it’s less transactional; it’s an invitation to join a community and be part of something. Receiving sounds simple, doesn’t it? Yet, for many of us, including myself, it’s surprisingly challenging. We excel at giving but struggle to accept what’s offered, often feeling the need to reciprocate or earn it. I’ve noticed this pattern in myself repeatedly. That familiar feeling when someone offers to pay for lunch or lend a hand—it shimmers a sense of unworthiness from time to time. One breakthrough in learning to receive came through massage for me. I vividly recall my first experience, nearly a decade ago while living in Mexico. Until then, I’d declined massages, deeming them a luxury I didn’t deserve. But one day, among a lot of uncertainty in early 2015, I decided to try it. That decision, prompted by an inner “yes,” was a pivotal moment. What followed was magical. In the hands of an intuitive masseuse named Christina, I experienced profound release and receptivity. Since then, massage has been more than relaxation; it’s deliberate receiving. With each session, I set an intention to accept what I need—whether it’s physical relief, emotional support, or nurturing. In a society valuing self-sufficiency, embracing receiving for me is an act of self-love. It reminds us we’re not alone and that it’s okay to lean on others. By embracing receiving, we foster a more interconnected world where giving and receiving flow freely. Recently, I seized the opportunity to embark on a day trip with a close friend and two new acquaintances I met through a WhatsApp group. The invitation sparked an immediate excitement within me, it felt like an absolute YES despite my usual reservations about venturing into the unknown aka no car of my own without a clear exit strategy. But this time, I made a conscious decision to let go of control and fully embrace the experience. Our destination? These beautiful thermal waters nestled in the Costa Rican mountains. It was a beautiful day getaway that filled me with a sense of fun, connection, and fulfillment. As a relatively new mom, I’ve learned the importance of balancing my responsibilities with self-care. For me, that means finding moments of fun and exploration close to home in this season of my life. During our adventure, I was reminded of the magic that comes from connecting with new people and places. Our group instantly clicked, and together, we co-created a beautiful day. This was the last time I breastfed my daughter December 2023 Breastfeeding my daughter for 15 months taught me more than I ever imagined. What I thought would be a simple journey turned into a series of unexpected challenges and deep discoveries. Initially, I assumed I would effortlessly breastfeed for two years without a second thought. But around the six-month mark, things took a difficult turn. My daughter seemed insatiable, demanding to nurse every 90 minutes, even through the night all while navigating my own postpartum struggles. I basically missed the cues that she needed more than just milk. I was battling mastitis regularly, unaware of its cause until months later. Those months were some of the hardest of my life, but I persisted, determined to uncover the root of our challenges. I knew I needed to heal this at a much deeper level than just the physical aspect of it. Eventually, I realized we needed to wean her off nighttime feedings. It was tough, but necessary for our well-being. However, hormonal fluctuations and illness threw new obstacles our way. After a rollercoaster of emotions, I made the difficult decision on Thanksgiving to stop breastfeeding. It broke my heart, but I knew it was the right choice for both of us. Our journey didn’t end as I’d imagined, but it taught me invaluable lessons about self-love, resilience, and acceptance. We’re both thriving in new ways, finding connection and beauty beyond breastfeeding. While a part of me wished we could have reached the two-year mark, I’ve let go of the ‘shoulda, coulda, woulda’ mindset. Our journey was ours, imperfect yet meaningful. The Pressure to Settle The world often pushes us towards contentment with the status quo, reminding us to be grateful for what we have, including our jobs. While gratitude is important, it’s equally important to recognize that it shouldn’t come at the cost of diminishing our worth. We are all born worthy, but it’s the narratives and experiences we accumulate over time that can diminish that inherent belief. I have a confession to make... I used to be a huge procrastinator. 🎶 Breaking Free from the Unhealthy Industry Loop I want to share a story close to my heart, one that may resonate with you. When I first discovered dance music, I was captivated by its power to energize me. I'd stay out for crazy hours, fueled by the music and the amazing community I found. I even took a leap of faith and moved to Berlin, Germany because of it. It was all about the music back then, and it was pure magic. But somewhere along the way, things started to change. I began to dabble in altered states, thinking it was part of the journey. It felt like the norm, it was fun, and at some point I thought it was necessary to belong. Then came a turning point. I decided this way of going out wasn’t resonating anymore so I went out sober one night, and I felt awkward, out of place, like I didn't fit in anymore. But here's the twist: no one was actually paying any attention to whether I was indulging or not. It was just a story I was telling myself, and if anyone had a comment to make it said more about them and their comfort level than it did about me and my choices. The moment I freed myself from this loop, that's when the real magic happened. I could fully enjoy the music, connect with those who resonated with me as I am, and wake up feeling better instead of worse the next day. 😅 Yes, I was nervous to step away from the wasted moments, the after-hours, the altered states because so many "industry connections" seem to happen there. But guess what? I discovered there's another way to do this. A way that allows us to be authentic, present, healthy, and still make meaningful connections. So, if you've ever felt trapped in this cycle, I'm here to tell you that there's hope.
