🥚 2 whole eggs + 4 egg yolks with a bunch of butter and Redmond real salt. Yay! That’s all so nourishing! Energy drink- not so much. If 1 can a day is the worse thing I do then no big deal. Like if I could ration myself then maybe not so bad. But with addictive tendencies the #caffeineaddiction #sugaraddiction kicks in! I wish I had never tried the first one! See if any of these sound familiar: a quick donut in the doctors’ lounge, even though you’ve sworn you’re going to cut back on sugar; doom-scrolling for “just a minute” on Instagram, only to find that 30 minutes has gone by; drinking three or four glasses of wine before, during, and after dinner because your glass is never empty; bingeing on Netflix for four hours on a day off. All of these quick fixes give us little hits of dopamine, and we instantly feel better. The problem is, that “better” doesn’t last. It’s not sustainable much beyond 10-20 minutes. So, we look somewhere else, or back to the same place, for the next hit, and the next, and the next, and if we can’t get satisfaction when that craving arises, we snap at a colleague or yell at our kid or flip off someone in a traffic jam who cut in front of us. A fundamental thought loop underlying all of this for me sounded like, “I deserve this”…..whatever “this” might be, from the list above, and well beyond. It turns out there is a better thought to consider in these moments, and it’s actually a question, rather than a statement: What is it that I need, right now? Back home after a very interesting London Conference on Food Addiction - 17th May at Royal College of GPS in Euston Square. It was fascinating to see the tension growing between the eating disorder v addiction debate and again the same between the new nomenclature around food addiction, becoming ultraprocessed food addiction after a "consensus" meeting with a group/quango of around 40 experts in the field. It is still sugar that is the issue which ever way you look at it! However I do see the merit of the regulatory approach to ultra processed food and being able to piggy back on the work of the anti- tobacco industry to create laws to protect our children from exposure to these industrially produced food stuffs. But like I say, it is still sugar that is the problem. And beyond that - wow - to hear an expert stand up at the conference and say that in his opinion over 75% of those diagnosed with an eating disorder were suffering from the disease of addiction was HUGE. Why does this matter? Because in the field of eating disorder the approach is to manage the food intake - all food - including grains and porridge for breakfast, fruit and more - which still contains sugar. This is incredibly unhelpful for the disease of addiction. Like it or lump it, food freedom comes from abstinence and moving into recovery - and for anyone with the disease of addiction it will never come from moderation. Ever. It is a profound mindset shift. People miss this point. The key to recovery starts when we learn how to move out of diet mentality - to let go of the restriction piece. Once the food is down, what can happen is the re-surgence of co-occurring diagnoses. This is why it is key to stay open and alive to this possibility that in that clean headspace, the issues that were confronting you have not gone away. Sure, it gives kids that instant burst of energy, making them feel like they could run a marathon in the living room. But what goes up must come down, and a sugar crash can leave them feeling as cranky as a cat in a bath. Irritability, mood swings, and general grumpiness often follow, making your life a bit more challenging than it needs to be. Processed Food Perils Next up, those ever-convenient processed foods. We’re talking about crisps, ready meals, and anything that comes in a packet with a list of ingredients longer than your arm. These foods are often packed with artificial colours, flavours, and preservatives. While they might be easy to prepare, they’re not so easy on your child’s mental state. Studies have shown that diets high in processed foods are linked to increased anxiety and depression in children. Yikes! Caffeine Chaos Now, you might think caffeine is just for adults, but don’t be fooled. It sneaks into children’s diets through fizzy drinks and even some sweets. While a fizzy drink might seem like a harmless treat, the caffeine can make kids jittery, anxious, and irritable. WOWZA! 🔥🎊What a week it’s been (Ok actually it’s been a full and intense last 3 weeks or so over here). If you can never stick to the one bite, one piece, one meal that you vow to eat off plan then you are not a moderator. There’s no shame in this. It just is what it is and acceptance of that will bring you peace. Yes, you will grieve that you are not the moderator you desperately want to be, but if you work on your mindset and put food in its proper place you will get over that sadness and gladly embrace abstinence. Why? Because abstinence brings you true freedom. I know that is a difficult concept for many to wrap their brain around, but I speak from experience. Life is so much better trying not to control portions of things that I have a long history of losing control with. It was never just one Hershey bar, one piece of cheesecake, or one six piece McNuggets – no it was multiple candy bars, the whole cheesecake in 24 hours, and the 50 piece McNugget binge in my car. I am so much more free just avoiding those things all together. Packing my case and gathering my thoughts as I prepare to leave for London and the International Food Addiction Conference 2024. Something has changed overnight. There is stress present - solo travel, social situations and new challenges does that to me - there is anxiety there too . I can feel it in my tummy where it has always lived and am grateful, it is a good reminder that this disease of addiction will travel with me. When I take time to be still and check in with my body, I can understand what is driving my thought process. This is one of those days where the red dog (my addict brain) pokes his head over the edge of his basket. I see you, Red but not today. On days like these I remember Blue (Dog - my recovery mind) and cuddle up to him in his basket in every single moment. I am blessed by a new community that challenges me and moves me back into my body. It reminds me the power of the breath and reminds me that at any moment I can choose to sit down and breath into the space that surrounds me. I have a network of close friends who understand this disease and will listen when I reach out and I own the fact that this situation challenges me and I struggle to feel safe. Pre-verbal trauma does that to you. I own it but just for today I choose for a new experience. I choose a growth mindset and to follow my path. Sending love to anyone else who is reminded of these feelings but wants more from life. Sugar cravings is a constant battle I face, I could live off dessert, but I’m well aware of the problems that come with that. Apart from all the obvious physical ailments sugar causes (like inflammation, gut damages, skin and hair concerns, and all the major diseases) it deeply impacts our moods too. Constantly being on a sugar merry go-around is actually exhausting, everytime you come off the high and hit a slump, you will reach for more sugary foods. 🍦🍨🍪🍫🧁 It’s one of the hardest foods to get off; some studies show rats who were given electric shocks every time they reached for sugar, however, still didn’t stop, but with cocaine they did! The withdrawals are real, the lows are bad, headaches and moodswings too. Once you aren’t dependent on it you can feel the difference within a few days!
