Chicken pepper nachos Ingredients: • 3 C of peppers, sliced • 6 oz of cooked chopped chicken • 6 oz of low-fat shredded cheese • ¼ C of green onions • 10 black olives, sliced Directions: • Lay the sliced peppers in the bottom of a pan • Evenly distribute the chicken, cheese, green onions, and black olives on top of the peppers • Broil for 10 mintues … Directions Cook meat till done, add taco seasoning and a little water. Cook for a few more minutes. Slice and quarter bell pepper into chip size pieces. Using a cookie sheet or individual dish layer in order; peppers, meat, cheese, onion. Bake at 350 for 13 minutes. Top with tomato and olives. This recipe makes 1 serving 1 lean 3 green 1 condiment 1 ———————————————— 2. Ricotta and Bacon Stuffed Mini Peppers Ingredients: 1 pound assorted mini peppers, about 18 mini peppers* (6 Greens) 2/3 cup part skim ricotta cheese (2/3 Lean) 1/3 cup reduced fat mozzarella cheese, shredded (1/3 Lean) 4 slices turkey bacon 1 egg, beaten (with turkey bacon ~ 1 Lean) 1/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese (4 Condiments) 2 tbsp fresh basil chopped (1/4 Condiment) 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (1/2 Condiment) 1/4 tsp salt ~optional (1 Condiment) 1/8 tsp black pepper (1/4 Condiment) Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 👠 B O O K R E V I E W 👠 No One Goes Alone by Erik Larson 👻 SYNOPSIS – Pioneering psychologist William James, a member of the Society for Psychical Research, leads an expedition of carefully selected researchers to the remote Isle of Dorn in the North Atlantic in 1905. The reason is to search for answers after many mysterious disappearances, most notably a family of four. Was it for physical reasons? Or is this there paranormal activity on the island? 👻 REVIEW – “Help Us” is a theme that runs through this book, but for my review it is better stated as “Help Me.” I loved the Devil in the White City, so I wanted to fall in love with this book. It is only available in audio, because, as Larson says, who doesn’t love to hear a good ghost story. And, while I, too, love a good ghost story, preferably around a camp fire, sadly, this one did not captivate me as I had hoped. The narrator, though with an eerie voice, did not vary enough for the many characters, and I felt I spent a lot of energy focusing on who was saying what. In fact, I listened to the first two chapters twice just to try and keep everyone straight. Additionally, for the description put into each scene, there were no sound effects; nothing to capture the spooky ambiance. The storyline had all the compelling elements - interesting characters with varied pasts, mysterious disappearances, secluded location, raging storms and all against the juxtaposed backdrop of an idyllic house. And, while a slow build, I was committed to finding out who or what was causing the angst on this island. However, while I liked the plot development, the action at the end left something to be desired after a long build-up. I’ve read a couple of Erik Larson’s nonfiction book and enjoyed them, and I like ghost stories, but listening to this audiobook just reinforced the fact that my mind wanders too much to listen to a book, particularly a novel. I had a hard time differentiating between the characters, especially the female ones. Book 42 of 2022: No One Goes Alone, by Erik Larson This is a rare foray into fiction for Larson, whose historical nonfiction books have proven to be really great reads. This one was apparently ONLY released in audio format, since, as the author notes, the best host stories are meant to be told out loud. But I have to say, as far as ghost stories go, this one fell flat for me. It’s the story of a group of people, from ghost hunters to mediums, to illusionists to men of science, who visit the fictional island of Dorne (which is believed to be haunted) in the early 20th century, in order to either prove the existence of ghosts or to debunk the stories officially. The problem is, the story just never gripped me, and even the unexplainable activity never seemed particularly scary. My very first audiobook ever… 👹 in 40’ish years of reading I have never ever listened to a single audiobook so I’m kind of proud of myself. 👻 The story was interesting, fun, with great detailed descriptions and characters. The ending was galloping and had me yelling at the kids to hush so I could finish, and as I was knitting while I listened, I knit super-fast in anxiety. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Four stars because Larson is a great writer but the story was a little draggy in parts. My introduction to Erik Larson’s writing was, like many of you, The Devil in the White City. I’ve read a couple of his other nonfiction works over the years, trying to chase the feeling of that first book, but never quite finding it. When I heard that Larson was publishing his first work of fiction, and a ghost story no less, I was intrigued. I thought that perhaps this might be what I was looking for. . Here’s the thing: I liked this but I didn’t love it. It’s basically a locked-room mystery—except the characters are locked on an island and dealing with increasingly spooky occurrences. I’d like to say this is And Then There Were None meets The Haunting of Hill House, but seeing that I haven’t read the latter, take that with a grain of salt. The book is published only as an audiobook, and while I respect the author’s reasoning that ghost stories are best experienced as something listened to, this reader very much wanted to hold the physical book in her hands. Flipping back a few pages to refresh my memory about characters and plot would have been immensely helpful, at least for me.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The story is only available in audio because the history of ghost stories are that they are passed on via spoken word. While I understand that explanation, the story was a bit too intricate and character-heavy for me to follow on audio. I needed a PDF with characters and locations at least if I couldn’t read the story. This is definitely a personal preference thing for me - I mostly listen to non-fiction because my mind wanders when I’m trying to follow a fiction plot for some reason. The story itself was atmospheric and spooky, I loved the blend of real people and fiction and I would read more fiction from Larson, I just hope it would be in written form for me personally! Dear No One Goes Alone, You were such a delightfully shivery ghost story. I loved sinking into the past, and searching the shadows of the firelight as the whole group tried to find the truth behind the bizarre ghostly happenings on the Isle of Dorne. I absolutely agree with Larson that the only way to experience a ghost story of this calibur is to listen, and let your imagination go wild. You are a locked room mystery, elevated, but I did struggle keeping a few of the cast of characters straight.
I listened to No One Goes Alone because…you have to listen to it. There is no print version. The author says he thinks ghost stories are best read aloud and I agree. 👻 Though it dragged in a few places but I mostly enjoyed this. The things I really liked about it were the real historical people and events referenced and the ending. The narration was great too. I’ve read a few horror/ghost stories this year and I think a major part of this genre are the lulls. Thrillers better not have too many lulls or the tension is broken and the effect is ruined. But I think ghost stories are meant to mess with the reader and so I’ve forgiven No One Goes Alone for the parts where I was like, “Get on with it already!” I really enjoy reading seasonally and this fit right in with my fall vibes. Book thoughts: No One Goes Alone Finished this one up last week. It is Larson’s first fiction work and only on audio. Even though it was fiction I greatly enjoyed Larson’s afterward where he explained how this book came about and his attempt to include as many real life characters and references as possible. Hello friends 🤍 I found a new (to me) author I absolutely need to binge on! This is my first Erik Larson read and I’m hooked. Thank you to @prhaudio for access to this exclusive audiobook. Rating: ★★★★☆ There needs to be something said for authors who can so wonderfully blend fiction and non-fiction in a story that is both riveting and holds some vein of truth. And that is what Larson did with No One Goes Alone. Set in the very early 1900s, on the Isle of Dorn, a group of researchers converge to the single house on the island to study psychical phenomena. The group varies among believing and non believing in supernatural phenomena, so we get a really rounded approach to the subject. This house was known for multiple disappearances and the leader of the group, William James thinks that this is the perfect setting for their expedition. It doesn’t take long for their individual ideals to be expressed and for them to begin to experience the unexplainable. There is one thing for sure, Erik Larson was right when he said that ghost stories are best told aloud. The narration in this book was phenomenal. This was engaging and spooky. The setting that is painted for us is eerie and completely it’s own character in this tale. The audio format worked well with the ghost story plot. While there are a lot of characters, it was fairly simple keeping them straight after a few chapters. This is historical fiction and uses real people and events and felt true to the 1900s time period. I thought the author did a great job of weaving the facts and fiction together. 👻 I was really interested in the spooky and mysterious activities happening on the island, but found myself zoning out for the extensive scientific explanations. Someone more interested in the research might find it fascinating, but I definitely would have preferred to have less detailed scientific facts. I also struggled a bit with the MC who was a somewhat whiny man who needed constant attention to feel included. I enjoyed the spooky tone but would have loved a bit more to the ending which left a lot of unanswered questions. The narrator does an excellent job and it was a great listening experience, but I was surprised to only hear one the whole book as it seemed a perfect set-up to include more narrators in this character driven story. Happy Monday, Friends 🖤 I’ve been a bit absent these last few months and there’s a reason. My husband’s brother, my brother-in-law, is terminally ill. He is a 10-year survivor of renal cancer but in the last two months, his oncologist has found he has metastases to his lung, liver, mesentery and adrenal gland on his remaining kidney. It’s one of those things that I thought long and hard about sharing in a public forum but decided it’s ok to share what’s going on in my personal life. All of us are, after all, people – with real life problems and lives that we’re living. So, if I seem a bit off to you or I’m not posting as regularly as usual, just know that myself and my family are struggling right now to not only spend as much time with him as possible but also taking him to a lot of appointments and looking at treatments that may prolong his life. Since we live in a rural area, this means a lot of driving! With that being said, I want to extend my most sincere thanks to @PRHAudio for this gifted spooky box and audiobook! What a joy it was to come home to something so special! This Boo Bag put a smile on my face and the headphones are fabulous! I put over 600 miles on my car last week alone taking my brother-in-law to various appointments and to the hospital down state. It's engaging and entertaining, never boring! No One Goes Alone is different. It's actually fiction this time. Yep, Larson just released his fictional debut!! But, it's only available via audiobook because, "ghost stories are best told aloud." No One Goes Alone has the same intelligent writing Larson is known for, although I found the ghost story element to be quite the sloooow burn. It felt like gothic historical fiction thanks to the 1905 timeframe, the isolated setting, and Julian Rhind-Tutt’s narration, but I was left wanting much, much more in the ghost department. I’ve really enjoyed many of Larson’s nonfiction works and No One Goes alone, his first foray into fiction, was just as enjoyable. This book reminded me a lot of Stuart Turton’s 7 1/2 Deaths if Evelyn Hugo and The Devil and the Dark Water mixed a bit with Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. It has all the right elements for a spooky mystery: secluded island, mysterious occurrences, and suggestion of an enigmatic larger battle between good and evil. I really enjoy when ghost stories take on a touch of the mythic. I also enjoy a ghost story that doesn’t creep me out too much and keep me from sleeping! This book struck just the right balance for me - just scary enough without giving me nightmares. How about you? I’m really stretching my genres this month. I’m so proud of myself 🥲 This is an audio-only ghost story by genius Erik Larson. (Because ghost stories are best listened to by a fire with brandy according to Larson!). I did not listen with brandy but there was a fire. It was spooky, there were a couple times I was making sure there were no ghosts in my house, but overall not TOO terrifying! It was really short which was helpful but I would have liked a little bit more of a tied-up ending. I guess that probably doesn’t happen with ghost stories. Anyway, this was a good listen for the season! I don’t really think you can go wrong with Erik Larson. The idyllic setting belies an undercurrent of danger and treachery, with raging storms and unnerving discoveries adding to the sense of menace. As increasingly unexplainable events unfold, the now-stranded investigators are unsure whether they can trust their own eyes, their instincts, one another - or even themselves. Thoughts: The pacing starts off a little slow as we are introduced to the set of characters and their reasoning for being on this research investigation. But as they settle into the house and weird happenings begin, I really grew to love the pacing and the setting. It’s an old timey ghost story and very atmospheric. I enjoyed the listen. Erik Larson, the noted nonfiction author, takes his first steps into fiction with this audio-only story that borrows heavily from Arthur Conan Doyle and Shirley Jackson to weave a somewhat creepy, intellectual ghost story. === Fans of Larson’s nonfiction - most notably “Thunderstruck,” which also happens to be my least favorite of his works - will appreciate the Easter eggs he weaves in as well as the politics and etiquette of post-Victorian era England, but unfortunately, it’s all just rather boring with more chatting than action. === There were a few truly creepy passages that had me turning on lights before entering dark rooms, but it was clear Larson struggled with how to pace a story like this one. Big reveals are presented, reacted to and then we move on. === For an audio-only story, the production is also rather disappointing. Julian Rhind-Tutt does a decent job of giving each character a unique voice, but why this wasn’t a full cast production that played like a radio serial is beyond me. Book Review (85): No One Goes Alone by Erik Larson. Thank you @prhaudio for my copy of this audiobook. Erik Larson does fiction?? Yes, this is his first crack at it and it’s a ghost story - available only on audio. It’s 1905 and a group of researchers set out on an expedition after mysterious disappearances on a North Atlantic island. We know Erik Larson for his historical non-fiction…The Devil in the White City, The Splendid and the Vile, and my favorite of his, In the Garden of Beasts. I’ve come to expect these masterful works from him, research that’s epic in scope…sometimes almost too much of that, really. So of course a fictional project is going to be different and this IS different. It’s got that period feel, early 1900s, British characters…but I was expecting something more historical. A ghost-infused historical fiction, I guess. And it is that, really, but I didn’t care much for it. Maybe I just don’t like ghost stories? I couldn’t keep track of the cast of characters until nearing the end of the book, and it wasn’t til the very end that I felt invested in the story at all. I did like the end, though, and the author’s note was great. So a bit of redemption for all my negative feelings! Rating: ⭐️⭐️💫 I’m very interested to hear if other readers enjoyed this one!
