The California Horse Thieves: Jedediah Smith’s Legacy When Jedediah Smith became the first European to cross the Sierras in 1827, he didn’t just open a route—he sparked a horse-stealing frenzy. Smith’s tales of immense Californian horse herds at the Mountain Man Rendezvous became legendary. Horse demand had never been higher in the desolate American frontier. With beaver pelt prices falling, a wave of desperate, wealth-crazed trappers and adventurers began venturing deep into California, utilizing the expertise of native scouts to raid sprawling mission and ranch herds of Southern California as they sowed chaos across the region. After wintering their stolen treasures in the fertile grounds of the Central Valley, they’d make the perilous journey across the deserts of Nevada, stopping at what is now Las Vegas to resupply at that rare oasis on their way to Santa Fe. The ensuing decade saw a dramatic increase in horse raids, not just by Americans but also by Californian natives, who adopted these new raiding techniques. This surge in horse theft escalated tensions between American settlers and Mexican authorities, setting the stage for the Mexican-American War. “A Port at the Edge of the World III” dives deep into the beginnings of this era, with “A Port at the Edge of the World IV,” soon to be released, expanding on it further. (Episode IV is looking to be more of a monster than the last, folks—stay tuned!) #JedediahSmith #CaliforniaHistory #HorseThieves #TheSavageWestPodcast #AmericanWest #HistoricalPodcast #AmericanHistory #manifestdestiny

On this day in 1952: At Woomera, a guard named Mr. GM Newell witnessed a baffling event while waiting for the bus. As the desert sun set, he and two companions spotted an intensely bright light in the sky. Positioned about 45 degrees above the horizon, the light moved in a peculiar West North Westerly direction, seemingly parallel to the ground. Despite overcast skies and earlier rainfall, the light illuminated the clouds with the intensity of a full moon, casting a surreal glow over the countryside. Newell described the light as resembling a meteor in color and size, about one-third the size of a full moon. The phenomenon persisted for approximately 15 seconds before fading into the distance. Manhattan is the veritable center of the universe. But in 1626 it was purchased for what equates to 24 dollars worth of spoons, hatchets…and of course “wampum”. (Albeit a century and a half before the “dollar” actually came into existence.) 🤔 Come discover the fascinating story of the place we now know as “New York”, starting in 1609, when a rogue Englishman, on temporary assignment for the Dutch, hijacks his employer’s 65-foot yacht, five thousand miles off-course, in pursuit of the shortcut to China. But it was neither the river nor this strange, green island called “Manna-hata” that caused any European to care to return to this place, but rather the thick, shiny beaver 🦫 skins that some of his crewmen had casually traded away their buttons and spoons for. Yes - this story is a bit complicated. This is our lost American history - the incredible story of the ISLAND of Manhattan. #climbaboard #historyiscool 😎 🇳🇱 🎙️ 🇺🇸 Click the link in bio to listen to the full episode. #Manhattan #NewYorkHistory #HistoricalPodcast #DiscoverThePast #TrueStories #EngageYourMind #DiscoverManhattan #MustListen #BePartOfHistory #podcastcommunity #americanhistory

Unternehmen Rösselsprung, part 1. Preperations for capturing Tito. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2ZpFmFYmlgnKLKvkO5Dbfz?si=LzLPyi6bSy26jK9MrPY-fw In this episode, we'll journey through the complex landscape of Yugoslavia during the war, a terrain rife with shifting allegiances and relentless resistance. We'll revisit the initial resistance led by the Serbian nationalist Chetniks, and how Josip Broz Tito's Communist Partisans emerged as a formidable force against the Axis powers. This growing strength, especially after Italy's withdrawal from the war, compelled the Axis to devise a drastic countermeasure. Our narrative will thread through the inner workings of German intelligence, the Abwehr and the SD, as they orchestrate the deployment of elite units like the SS-Fallschirmjäger-Bataillon 500. This gripping tale of warfare and strategy unfolds amidst the rugged terrains of Drvar, where meticulous planning meets the raw force of survival and resistance. As we dissect the preparations behind this mission, you'll gain an understanding of the high stakes involved and the critical objectives: to capture or kill Tito and dismantle the Partisan command and its Allies. #SpecialForcesWW2 #UnternehmenRösselsprung #MilitaryHistory #WW2Operations #Tito #PartisanResistance #AirborneRaids #WarStrategy #HistoricalPodcast #CombatTactics #WorldWar2Heroes #MilitaryIntelligence #AxisVsAllies #HistoryPodcasts #WarStories #EliteForces #WW2SpecialOperations 🔗 Stay connected with us: Website: https://worldwar2-sof.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ww2.sof Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WorldWar2SOF Threads: https://www.threads.net/@ww2.sof Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SpecialForcesinWorldWar2 Spotify: Special Forces in World War 2 Podcast

👹👹😈👿👹😈👹👹👹👿👿😈😈👹👹👹👹 In 1883 a group of men, led by Nathaniel Kinney formed a group to protect Taney County citizens against the actions of the “outlaws” who had come into the area. They got their name, “Bald Knobbers” because they met on the bald area on top of one of the areas mountains and were known for the distinctive masks they wore. They accomplished their initial objective and as a result, gained a lot of, what these days we call “political power”. Unfortunately, along with that power, they became a law unto themselves even to the point where Kinney shot one of the “anti-Bald Knobber” leaders in “cold blood” and it was deemed “self-defense.” Their vigilante tactics lost them public support and the original Taney County Bald Knobbers were dissolved under the supervision of the Missouri Governor’s office. Ironically, even though the Bald Knobbers he started had been disbanded, Kinney himself was assassinated by an assassin hired by an “anti Bald Knobber” group and his assassin was acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. 📰Source: https://www.bransontourismcenter.com/info/ 📰 📰 📰 📰 #baldknobbers #ozark #ozarkmountains #1883 #outlaws #history #historicalnewspaper #vintage #podcast #historicalpodcast #vintagenews #missouri #branson #arkansas #vintagenewsandchampagneviews
