.. The Tasmanian branch of Australiana held an excellent afternoon event at Willow Court / the Barracks at New Norfolk followed by a visit to a historic c.1828 house owned by one of our members that has been beautifully respected and gently repaired. New Norfolk Tasmania was settled by Europeans around 1807 following the closure of Norfolk Island as a prison in 1807. The new town was proclaimed โElizabeth Townโ by Gov. Macquarie after his wife but the locals would not accept the name. Gov. Arthur visited in 1827 and ordered that all invalid convicts be relocated to New Norfolk. The Barracks was already housing convicts, the infirm and military personnel. Invalids were formally housed and admitted to the hospital in June 1827. The iconic sandstone Willow Court Barracks were completed by 1831 and replaced earlier timber structures. The site takes its name later in history due to two large willow trees that once stood in the forecourt that were planted by Lady Jane Franklin. Only a portion of the 1831 buildings survive and it is yet to be determined what all the rooms were used for. The site was finally closed as a hospital for the mentally ill in late 2001. Willow Court is owned by the Derwent Valley Council while other sections of this very large site is in private hands. Some later buildings have been repaired and repurposed, some of the materials and treatments are of concern. The 1831 building has had repairs but more work is required and a clear plan that is cohesive to the whole site, town and tourism is essential. The replanting of two Salix babylonia as a nod to the sites name and to the sad history of this would be prudent. A fascinating afternoon for the 30 local and interstate members of Australiana. Finnish Lutheran Church by Architect Frederick Romberg of Grounds, Romberg & Boyd. The slight adjustment off the cardinal orientation to align with parallel edges of the site; has bathed this square plan with magnificent sunlight that illuminates the congregation between 10 to 11:30. The autumn sunlight then tracks to the back of the church to gesture towards tea time. The play of natural light welcomes in the divine presence of the sun and fills the space with the sacred. John has devised an adapted Tupperware with rubber grips fixed to a paintbrush extension pole in order to replace the light bulbs that recreate the light effect during darker overcast days. Its a stroke of genius from a modest man who with love maintains this brilliant architecture. Thank you to the Finnish congregation who warmly hosted me and shared their traditional tea time delights that were so nummy. #finnishlutheranchurch #canberraarchitecture #frederickromberg #groundsrombergboyd #canberraheritage #australiandesign #australianheritage #australianarchitecture
On this day in 1826: Thomas Jeffries and Matthew Brady faced their final moments together as they were hanged for their crimes. The duo's joint execution marked the end of their notorious reign as bushrangers in Australia's colonial history. Jeffries and Brady had terrorized the countryside with their daring robberies and violent escapades, earning them a fearsome reputation among settlers and law enforcement alike. Their capture and subsequent trial captivated the public, highlighting the struggle for law and order in the fledgling colony. As the nooses tightened around their necks, Jeffries and Brady paid the ultimate price for their actions, serving as a cautionary tale for those who would follow in their footsteps. Their execution signaled a victory for justice and a stern warning to those who dared to defy the law. The hanging of Jeffries and Brady remains a significant event in Australian criminal history, symbolizing the end of an era of lawlessness and the triumph of order over chaos. On this day in 1838: A grim chapter unfolded in South Australia's history as Michael Magee met his fate at the end of a hangman's noose. Magee's execution, marred by botched procedures, marked a grisly affair that shocked the young colony. His crime: the wounding shooting of Samuel Smart, South Australia's inaugural sheriff. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the challenges of law enforcement in the burgeoning colony. Magee's act of violence against a prominent figure underscored the tensions and lawlessness prevalent in early South Australia. The botched execution further exacerbated public outrage and raised questions about the colony's justice system. Magee's demise serves as a somber reminder of the violence and turmoil that characterized South Australia's formative years. It stands as a cautionary tale against lawlessness and the fragility of order in frontier societies. On this day in 1988: Melbourne's underworld was rocked by the assassination of Victor Pierce, a notorious figure deeply entrenched in illicit activities. Pierce, synonymous with drug trafficking and armed robbery, met his demise in a hail of bullets outside his South Yarra residence. His murder, emblematic of the ruthless power struggles within Melbourne's criminal milieu, sent shockwaves through the city. Pierce's demise underscored the pervasive violence endemic to organized crime in Australia during that era. In its aftermath, law enforcement intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks and bring perpetrators to justice. The brazen nature of the attack highlighted the impunity with which criminals operated, prompting a significant crackdown on gang-related activities. On this day in 1801: The new governor, Governor Philip Gidley King, ordered any First Nations people seen near Parramatta, the Georges River or Prospect could be shot on sight, and others to be driven as far back from settlers as possible. This, of course, led to a resurgence and direct confrontations between the locals and the settlers. First Nations people, primarily the Eora people, and settlers alike were killed in the fighting, some just trying to protect their families and their homes. Australian colonial cedar cabinet/bookcase that carries some intrigue ! Does it have the integrity of an original โwholeโ or is the bookcase top a later addition to the earlier bottom cabinet ? There are arguments for both cases. The bottom features a stylised fleur-de-lis applied panel .. would it not have been applied to the upper section also. The moulding between the top and bottom doors is ever so slightly different. However the backs to both upper and bottom parts seem contemporaneous โฆ both featuring 15โinch wide pine boards with exact similar wear. Does the fleur-de-lis design signify an ecclesiastical provenance ? Unquestionable though is the glorious cedar graining on the bottom door panels and warm original 19th century patina. Any thoughts, theories and feedback is welcomed. #australiana #australianantiques #australianheritage #australiancedar #australiancedarfurniture #cedarbookcase #cedarcabinet

On this day in 2021: Tragedy struck when Clinton Gage, aged 9, lost his life in a dingo attack on Fraser Island/K'gari. While out for an early morning stroll with his younger brother Dylan and a friend, they encountered a male and female dingo. Despite attempting to retreat to their campsite at Waddy Point, the dingoes pursued them relentlessly. In a desperate bid to escape, the children ran, but Clinton tragically fell victim to the aggressive animals and was fatally mauled. This incident marked the first lethal dingo attack on a human since the infamous death of nine-week-old Azaria Chamberlain at Ayerโs Rock in 1980. The devastating loss of Clinton Gage underscored the ongoing risks posed by wildlife encounters in Australia's natural environments, prompting renewed attention to dingo management and safety measures on Fraser Island. On this day in 1985: Wendy Waine was killed in her unit on Darlinghurst Rd, Darlinghurst. Evidence suggests she likely met her demise between approximately 3:15 am and 9:00 pm. The circumstances surrounding her murder remained shrouded in mystery, prompting investigations into potential suspects and motives. Wendy's tragic end, as a member of the transgender community, underscored the vulnerability of marginalized groups to violence and discrimination, especially by the law enforcement community of Sydney. Her death highlighted the urgent need for reforms in police practices and attitudes towards marginalized communities. The dismissal of her case further exacerbated feelings of injustice and vulnerability among transgender individuals, who often face heightened risks of violence and discrimination in all aspects of their lives. The case highlighted the urgent need for societal acceptance and protection of transgender individuals, emphasizing the importance of combating prejudice and ensuring equal rights and safety for all. On this day in 1952: At Woomera, a guard named Mr. GM Newell witnessed a baffling event while waiting for the bus. As the desert sun set, he and two companions spotted an intensely bright light in the sky. Positioned about 45 degrees above the horizon, the light moved in a peculiar West North Westerly direction, seemingly parallel to the ground. Despite overcast skies and earlier rainfall, the light illuminated the clouds with the intensity of a full moon, casting a surreal glow over the countryside. Newell described the light as resembling a meteor in color and size, about one-third the size of a full moon. The phenomenon persisted for approximately 15 seconds before fading into the distance. While some speculated it could be rocket activity, Newell remained convinced it was unlike any rocket launch he had seen. The incident sparked intrigue and speculation, contributing to the ongoing fascination with unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and extraterrestrial phenomena. On this day in 1999: John Camilleri, convicted for his role in the tragic murders of Lauren Barry and Nichole Collins, received a life sentence from the Supreme Court. The sentencing followed a horrifying trial that unveiled the gruesome details of the girls' final moments. After a series of chilling events, including the girls being bound, assaulted, and forced to walk through rugged terrain, Camilleri ordered them to remove their clothing to eliminate evidence. Subsequently, they were gagged, tied, and separated, setting the stage for their tragic end. The sentencing of Camilleri to life imprisonment without parole provided a semblance of justice for the victims and their families, ensuring he would never walk free again. .. .. ANZAC Day 2024 Melbourne - Shrine of Remembrance Located in Kings Domain St Kilda Road Victoria Australia The Shrine of Remembrance was built to honour the people who fought in World War 1 but now honours all Australians who have fought in war. In 2024 the Shrine marks its 90th anniversary. The design for the shrine was selected by competition among Australian artists and architects. 83 designs were submitted, and the winning design was by two Melbourne returned-soldiers architects, Philip Hudson and James Wardrop. The money required to build this expensive monument was raised through public sponsor within 6 months. The Shrine was officially opened in November 1934 before a crowd of 300,000 people. Melbourneโs population back then was almost 1 million people. 300,000 was the single largest public turnout at that time. The circumstances surrounding Vollmer's passing were nothing short of sensational, taking place amidst an exorcism attempt on a pig farm in north-western Victoria. The subsequent trial unfolded with extraordinary elements, including testimonies of supernatural occurrences and attempts to expel demons.
