💥Day 12 ✅💥 HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! Woke up today with an ambitious goal, to get to Erldunda! Set off early around 7:40am and fought the cold air, fingers honestly felt like they were about to fall off! Scenery had changed a bit with Rocky Mountain ranges. Head winds and hills pretty much sums up the day. Couple hours in, we crossed the border!! Met the same caravaners for the fourth time, pretty much a guaranteed water fill up at this point! Took a picture and we were off! 20km to Kurlgera, where I had few options of meals so I went with the same bet of a couple meat pies. Bumped into a dozen…. (Slightly tipsy) cow boys haha. Then the true battle began! 73km to Erldunda! After water stops, snack stops, distance checking stops. I made it!! 140km for the day! There’s a camel somewhere in that last photo. I’ve pitched tent and going to have a couple meals tonight, I’m starving! 💥Day 10✅💥 Woke up today, with a little bit of a sleep in before I cracked on and started chipping away at the Km’s. Got a startle by a couple galloping horses and saw a very persuasive sign! “give us ya shoes” after nearly handing them over, I thought I still have a hell of a long way to go, so i pedalled on. 40km to Cadney for a picture with the 50m long trucks I have to deal with and a couple hot pies. One of the guys in the pub mentioned to me about that oversize load “earthmover” today and how everyone had to get off into the shoulder. Over the UHF intercom the truckie goes “biker up ahead, don’t worry he’s wearing hi-viz… you can’t miss him”. Knowing that made me feel a bit happier haha. Not much at all for the next 70km. Met some really cool German bike packers in marla! Been travelling since march. As you can see I was pretty excited. Got some snacks from Marla and an Outback Burger at the pub with the Germans. Pitched tent next to a dead snake. Had a swim and shower! Pub energy is buzzing as 50 odd army guys are coming for the night! Boy is it going to get rowdy hahha! 118km done and off to bed early I reckon! Onto day 11. Also we hit 1000km for the trip! 💥Day 9✅💥 Not needing to pack up camp this morning, I stayed in bed an extra few minutes before I headed to the bat cave for breakfast! Stacked pancakes with eggs and bacon was the special so I thought, why not! Went down a treat with my kids OJ. Ended up hitting the road at 8:40am, crossed the dog fence and 2 minutes later a baby snake slithered across the road, I did a U-turn so I could take a photo but nope he was too quick! Maybe it was the bat cave brekkie or I’m getting to like the smell of fresh roadkill but I was feeling good this morning. My knees have finally eased up after the last 6 days of them feeling like stuck hinges. Today was just long roads, not many cars and the odd emu running across. I feel like I’ve become a transport system for the flies! Like they just hop on my shoulder and swap places with their mates at each dead animal! Had to grab out the fly net, as they snuck under my glasses and got in my eyes.. it got very annoying! Now hidden behind some bushes still swatting flies, that’s a rap for today. Im now eating a creamy carbonara that I added too much water to and a cappuccino with a side of fly. 113km on the clock. Onto day 10. Just got my Woomera engineer’s boots back from @rmwilliams. This is the second pair I bought, after wearing out the first. Wore them all through the US on my honeymoon back in 2000, walked miles in them, danced in them and wore them when I worked on the car. I wore through the sole and they’ve sat in the bottom of the wardrobe for years. Cost more to fix them than to buy them, but they should last another 25 years at least. #rmwilliams #woomera
💥Day 8✅💥 We made it to the Opal Town! Coober Pedy! After waking up at 3 in the morning to a loud car and people slamming doors and walking around, I managed to get back to sleep not until 5am where some foxes were sniffing around my tent and howling all morning!! I got up early made some peanut butter oats and a coffee before I set out on a mission to get to Coober! Legs feeling alive and mind switched on I peddled and peddled making great time. A quick protein refuel and some honey nuts got me through the morning. Snagged a photo of the best named mine! Realised that playing in your backyard can lead you down a death hole. Then just like that 90 odd km out I hit Coober Pedy for an iconic photo. Checked in on work and they mentioned that Michael just hit town…. Scrubbed up quick and hit the pub for a burger and a “local” tour, where Michael showed me the breakaways, the dingo fence and fell in love with a German Doctor. Hahaha sleeping underground tonight! 💥Day 7 ✅💥 One week just like that!!! 121km on the legs today! Had breakfast and said goodbye to the Germans. This morning was a little bit fresh, but I was excited to get out on the road to see more of the exact same landscape for the next 8 hours. Got presented with an example of how rough it is out here, with a rolled over, torn to pieces commodore wagon with a bold statement written on it. Stopped up 50km out for lunch and met some caravaners who gave me some biscuits and filled up my water, thankyou! Cycled over the RFDS airstrip and then about 90km into the ride a Landcruiser pulled up next to me asking if I needed any water! Of course I took them up on the offer and we got a picture and no that crack in the windscreen wasn’t from hitting me, they hit an eagle about 20km before, “I patched it with some jumper leads, it’ll make us till Coober” hahaha. Kept pedalling away reaching my goal of 100km and then sort out a sleeping spot. There was nothing but low weedy grass and a few trees for 20km I’ve now settled at a rest stop about 90km from Coober, where I’ll have a shower and get a room!! On this day in 1952: At Woomera, a guard named Mr. GM Newell witnessed a baffling event while waiting for the bus. As the desert sun set, he and two companions spotted an intensely bright light in the sky. Positioned about 45 degrees above the horizon, the light moved in a peculiar West North Westerly direction, seemingly parallel to the ground. Despite overcast skies and earlier rainfall, the light illuminated the clouds with the intensity of a full moon, casting a surreal glow over the countryside. Newell described the light as resembling a meteor in color and size, about one-third the size of a full moon. The phenomenon persisted for approximately 15 seconds before fading into the distance. While some speculated it could be rocket activity, Newell remained convinced it was unlike any rocket launch he had seen. The incident sparked intrigue and speculation, contributing to the ongoing fascination with unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and extraterrestrial phenomena. 😮 Watch your step! 🚨 There could be snakes, salt surfaces hot enough to melt your shoes or bombs, take your pick. Aside from that, salt lakes are absolutely beautiful, although I’m a bit biased being a lover of the stark beauty of arid regions. Lake Hart, located in South Australia. It is by no means the largest salt lake in Australia (that being Kati-Thanda/Lake Eyre) but is vast enough to make the horizon look like a blur. The continent of Australia is ancient, and there was once a vast but shallow inland sea throughout a lot of the interior. As it receded, deposits of salt were left in many places like Hart. Evaporation outpaces precipitation here so there’s no chance of it going. Named after John Hart, a colonial South Australian politician, it’s about 4,300 square km and can be visited as you pass along the previously discussed Stuart Highway. Abandoned vehicles baked by the sun and remnants of an I’ll fated commercial salt mining business makes it an interesting place. Human history spans back tens of thousands of years but the location of the lake being close to the town of Woomera, a military base means past a certain point it’s a no go zone. We are the only country that has knowingly nuked its own people. We can't even say citizens because indigenous people were not counted as citizens at the time nuclear tests were conducted in Australia. An unknown number of indigenous people were killed and impacted by radiation near the test sites of #maralinga . Bones of dead children were also stolen to test for levels of strontium. It's possible that more than 68 babies were killed in Woomera as a result of the nuclear fallout. WOOMERA 🚀🚀 Needed a top up on water on our way to the Red Centre and we came across this sneaky little town. We were surprised to see across the road from the public toilets and water fill up point, that there is a Rocket park that displays all of the military testing of rockets that occurred in this area. So cool and fascinating for the kids to see, from the lifesized rockets to remains of debris from unsuccessful missions. During my recent trip to the southern part of Australia, I stumbled upon a remote and enigmatic town that left me in complete awe. It was a town that was known to be a Prohibited Area, where any unauthorized entry or venturing off the road without permission was strictly forbidden. This area, known as the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA), is under the control of the Royal Australian Air Force and is used for testing war materiel. 🗺 Despite the strict regulations, I couldn’t contain my excitement as the town held an air of mystery and intrigue that had me completely captivated from the moment I arrived. The WPA is one of the largest military testing ranges in the world, covering an area of over 122,000 square kilometers. It is home to a variety of military installations, including airfields, missile testing ranges, and other top-secret facilities. 🚀As I explored the town, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and curiosity, knowing that I was in a place that very few people had ever been able to visit. The landscape was stark and desolate, with vast stretches of red earth and rocky outcroppings that seemed to go on forever. Despite the eerie silence of the surrounding desert, I felt a sense of energy and vibrancy in the town, as if it was alive with the secrets and mysteries of its past. 🚙 My visit to this mysterious town in the Woomera Prohibited Area was a thrilling and unforgettable experience that left me with a sense of wonder and amazement.
