Well here I am in the woods. I should really be exploring but he thinks I look good in a patch of sunlight with the bluebells in the background. Going a little further down the Foraged Alcohols path. This one is thanks to Fiona Millington Photography who brought back some Trouspinette, a wine based aperitif from the Vendee region of France for us to try. It is made with white wine and the fresh hawthorn leaves that are emerging at the moment. It’s flavoured is like a white vermouth which gave Mrs Feralscience the idea of making a Martini. Not traditional but delicious. I shall definitely be out picking for this in the next week or so. Then it will be time to try the red Trouspinette as the blackthorn leaves emerge. Looking forward to delivering a foraged alcohols course with Lizzy Maskey and Pippin & Gile in the autumn and hoping for a second course nearer me. #feralscience #outdoorcpdtraining #foraging #forageddrinks #winemaking #traditionaldrink #traditionaldrinks #vendée #hawthorn #infuseddrink

A great clip showing Kate throwing her kylie during the tuning part of the workshop . This one started from a plywood blank and I took the group though the shaping process using axe, knife and later sanding to get the wing to provide lift without it trying to return. They are an interesting technology with aerodynamics far more advanced than we would credit for a Palaeolithic hunting tool, though it’s sustained use in many cultures suggests that it is effective. It is also the only thrown object that does not follow a projectile arc when it is thrown. #feralscience #ancienttechnology #primitivetechnology #experimentalarchaeology #neanderthal #EXARC #archaeology #kylieboomerang #throwsticks #rabbitsticks #IOL #iolbushcraft #iolbushcraftconf23 #flighttoy #physics #physicsoflight #bushcraft #bushcraftskills

Apple time again. This year I don’t have to take over the kitchen for quite as long. Looking forward to being able to justify a scratter and press, maybe next year? Managed to yield 40 litres of clear juice and a bit less of racked off sludge. SEBDA conference 2023. It was a real honour to be able to present a workshop on the approach I take with Feral Science. Yesterday I focussed on what is usually the most hated of the three sciences for students- physics. In the workshop we compared the lab investigation into Hooke’s Law (the springs experiment) with my approach that uses hazel for the spring. We discussed the benefits to students of an uncertain outcome, removing complex equipment and the freedom to fail at a task. These small differences in approach remove barriers to learning for students with SEBD, SEMH or SEN needs. It went so well I’ve already been asked back for next year. #feralscience #outdoorlearning #outdoorscience #sebd #semh #specialeducationalneeds #asd #autism #physicspractical #gcsephysics #secondaryscience

This was not something I would have anticipated doing with @feralscienceltd until recently. I am presenting a workshop today for the SEBDA conference (Social, emotional and behavioural difficulties) on how an outdoor learning approach can help with the engagement and stickability of science. It is not the sort of building that usually has someone arrive with hazel poles but I am hoping that I can convince them that outdoor science should be a tool that helps learners. #feralscience #semh #sen #birminghamuniversity #outdoorscience #outdoorlearning #engagementinlearning #scaryconference

Crème de Mure round two. After the reaction from the last batch at the @wildernessgathering we had to give this a second go while we still have the brambles. It’s a variation on the previous ; brambles in a bottle of red for two days in the fridge, bring to a simmer with probably more sugar than you should consume before adding vodka. The first batch was all rum and possibly the better for it, this batch was vodka and rum blend but with less sugar. Both different, both delicious ( even in mid afternoon which is arguably not the intended time for consumption) If anyone out there has a go, let me know. #feralscience #traditionalliqueur #traditionalliqueurs #bramblefruit #blackberries #blackberry #foragedfood #forageddrinks #foraging #foragingwithmydog

Finally got to the point where the Meadowsweet ferment is far enough through to rack it from its ferment lees and bottle it with sugar for the second ferment, the one that will give it its fizz. It’s hard to be sure how much to add but at least I can (mostly) trust the bottles as they have already been tested by fizzy drinks. I am hoping for a Prosecco style fizzy wine, it is already a lovely flavour and tastes pretty much how the flowers smell. The sugar for the fermentation came from a blend of honey and sugar as pure honey ferments can be tricky. Final alcohol should be around 11% and should be ready in about 4 weeks. Meadowsweet has a long history of being used in this way as it’s name is a corruption of “mead sweet”. #feralscience #homebrew #winemaking #winemaker #methodtraditionelle #prosecco #foragedferments #meadmaking #bottleconditioned #meadowsweet #honey #ec1118 #anaerobicfermentation #gcsebiology

There is no extra cost for the bushcraft activities. If you are not currently a member you can find out more about the club and join via the website: www.nearlywildcamping.org What is Feral Science? Science is about practical skills. This is one of the things that drew me to the subject in the first place; it has the privilege of being the most practical of the core subjects taught in school. We are familiar with the school science lab and, however difficult students find the subject, there is pleasure in a practical investigation. However there is an aspect of science that coaches us into the incorrect assumption that it must be done in a lab. The way that the sciences are scheduled in schools misleads us into thinking that they are separate disciplines and conceals the overlapping areas, allowing students to believe that the knowledge they must acquire for each subject is separate and distinct. I believe that science is an approach: it is the thought process that asks a question and then seeks to design a way of answering this with data. If all goes well the data will support a number of statements or conclusions which can then be compared back to the original aims. This does not need a lab, in fact it might be better applied to more ‘real world’ situations. . #nearlywildcamping #bushcraft #feralscience

Unusual start to my day. Driving on local roads during rush hour a hedgehog was crossing the road ahead very slowly. I stopped to block the traffic, got out and lifted what instantly became a spikey ball to the verge at the side of the road. It was not obviously injured. Driving the same road soon after I was pleased not to see any hedgehog. It made me think: was I right to pick up a wild animal? What were the alternatives? Boomerangs - know your materials. Plywood is great in many respects and it has helped me learn alot in a short time about the aerodynamics of kylies but it does have its limitations. Anywhere where there is a bend, there are simply not enough layers of lamination to make the kylie strong enough to survive a heavy impact. The other thing I have learned is do not throw where there are trees - wood seems to have an unknown ‘magnetic’ effect. On the good side she is able to find both bits when they do break, this look says it all “Can’t you just throw both bits?” . . . #kylieboomerang #diyboomerangs #throwingsticksforthedog #woodcarving #boomerangmaking #feralscience #plywoodboomerang

Dog and boomerang vs bramble bush. Probably a draw as dog did recover both pieces from the tangle, the boomerang definitely lost. Lessons learnt: don’t cut ply on a 45 degree angle and don’t thin out the middle of the kylie. It does conserve rotation but seems to affect strength. It may also have added a bit too much lift causing the trip into the brambles in the first place. #feralscience #kylieboomerang #flighttoy #boomerang #throwstick #primitivetechnology #huntingtechnology

Back in @bradgate_park_trust but this time in the rain. Firelighting became competitive, the girls won, knots and tarps was a draw and everyone managed to do fire by friction and traditional flint and steel. All really enjoyed it, in spite of the damp conditions. #feralscience #bradgateparktrust #bushcraft #firelightingintherain #outdoorlearning

Set up and ready for my first session of half term at @bradgate_park_trust. We will be learning some bushcraft skills and using them to reinforce curriculum science. Spaces remain on Thursday’s session for those interested. #feralscience #bradgateparktrust #bradgateparkleicester #halfterm #outdoorscience #secondaryscience #outdoorlearning #learningoutsidetheclassroom #learningoutdoors #learningoutside
