May 13 of 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the first flight of an absolute Cold War legend; the English Electric Canberra. The Canberra was created as a replacement to the DeHavilland Mosquito. In that, the Canberra was as worthy an heir as could be to the Mosquito legacy. Equal in in mission flexibility as the Mosquito, the Canberra had a remarkable longevity. It entered service in 1951 and the last Royal Air Force examples were retired in 2006. If one factors in the American built variation of the Canberra, the B-57, three of the aircraft still remain in service with NASA as the WB-57 variant. Here are a couple of pictures I took of a Canberra B.2 preserved the air museum at Berlin-Gatow, Germany in 2016. 75 years ago today was the first flight of the English Electric Canberra. Canberra went on to have steller military career seeing service in various conflicts. It wasn't retired by the RAF until 23rd June 2006 and its final operator, the Indian Air Force until the 11th May 2007. This was 57 years, 11 months, 29 days after its first flight. RAAF Government Aircraft Factories Canberra Mk.20 bomber (A84-232) at the Avalon Air Show 2011 (non-flyer). This aircraft was delivered in 1956 and saw combat service with No.2 Sqn during the Vietnam War, deployed with the USAF 35th Tactical Fighter Wing based at Phan Rang Air Base, South Vietnam from 1967 to 1971. Before retirement it was used to conduct photographic cartography surveys in 1972-1973. It has been a gate guard at Avalon Airport since those days and was in bad shape before being externally restored back to Vietnam era markings for the RAAF 90th anniversary and the 2011 air show. VH-ZSQ, RAAF 100SQN’s Canberra bomber, flown by ACM Mark Binskin, AC. Seen flown on day one and day two of the 2024 Airshows Downunder Shellharbour airshow. Binskin joined the Navy in May of 1978, after completion of his flying training he was posted to the NAS HMAS Albatross, and became the first pilot to undergo an exchange with the RAAF to fly the Mirage. Binskin was made CAF in July 2008, VCDF in July 2011, and was made CDF in 2014 until his retirement in July 2018. ACM Binskin remains a Airforce Reservist, flying for 100 SQN, RAAF. The RAAF 100 Sqn Temora Historic Flight English Electric Canberra seen during flying displays at Airshows Downunder Shellharbour 2024. This aircraft was a Royal Air Force TT.18 type Canberra Bomber which originally entered service in 1955 and was retired from RAF service in 1991. It was acquired by the Temora Aviation Museum in 2001 and repainted to represent a 2 Sqn RAAF Canberra as it appeared during the Vietnam War. It was part of the collection of aircraft donated by the museum to the RAAF in 2019. Today I have been reflecting on Australia’s contribution to the Vietnam War. 18th August is Vietnam Veterans Day in Australia and 2023 marks 50 years since the end of our nation’s involvement in the conflict. In honour of the 60,000 veterans who served and, particularly for those who made the ultimate sacrifice, today is a time of reflection. I am revisiting a few of my paintings which have represented the Vietnam War from an Australian perspective. Thanks to all who have served or continue to serve. To round out the Vietnam War trilogy this is “Night Spectres”. I have shared this painting before, and it is actually one of my personal favourites. It was originally painted for the 2005 RAAF Heritage Awards and received Highly Commended. More recently the image was adapted for the RAAF Centenary medallions in 2021 from @airforce_shop_aus . 2 SQN RAAF with Canberra bombers was the only RAAF fixed-wing strike capability in South Vietnam during the war. It earned an enviable reputation for pinpoint accuracy and was employed on night bombing operations early in the conflict. Temora's well preseverd English Electric Canberra TT.18 making a pass at Avalon in some typical Melbourne Weather. It served with 2 Sqn in Vietnam as part of USAF 35th Tactical Fighter Wing. Arrived at Phan Rang Air Base 16/04/67 after a 2 hour flight from Butterworth, Malaysia. On 09/02/71 WNGCDR John Downing and SQNLDR B A Johnson were providing close air support for troops engaging the enemy. On the last of 5 bombing runs the aircraft was hit in the nose by shrapnel from one of its own bombs, narrowly missing the crew, partially severing the elevator cable s and embedding itself in the IFF panel. Their actions that day saw Downing and Johnson awarded the American DFC ( which suprisingly they never recieved!). On 07/04/71 this time crewed by FLGOFF S Fenton and PLTOFF Murphy 234 provided close air support to an US Army Infantry company in contact with a large enemy force. Despite the close proximity of friendly forces and heavy ground fire 6 single drop bombing runs were made without any US casualties. The enemy suffered 80 lost and retreated. The heroics of these actions influenced the Temora Aviation Museum's choice of identity for their Canberra. In July 2019, it was handed over to Temora Aviation Musuem and has only recenlty started flying again. Amazing to see a flying Canberra . VH-ZSQ /A84-234 . On 9th December 1957, a jet powered, high altitude English Electric Canberra bomber hit the ridge just below Carnedd Llewelyn in Snowdonia. The plane was smashed into a thousand pieces on impact and both crew members were killed instantly. A rare English Electric Canberra TT.18 on display at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Florida. First flown in 1949, the Canberra is a British first-generation, jet-powered medium bomber intended to replace the Mosquito. Built as a B.2 (first production version) in 1954, she served with Royal Air Force 540 Squadron. This aircraft flew photoreconnaissance missions over Russian missile sites before being allocated to 57 Squadron. The aircraft was one of 22 converted to TT.18 (target tug) configuration for the Royal Navy in 1974. After retirement she was acquired by a civilian owner in the US in 1994 and carried on flying until 2000. After several years of being stored in Florida, the Canberra was taken on by the VAC in 2011. In June 2006, the RAF retired the last of its Canberras, 57 years after its first flight. The aircraft was given the name “Canberra” after the capital of Australia in January 1950 by virtue of Australia becoming the aircraft’s first export customer.
