Daiichiji Daigokuden Hall This was the largest palace building at the Nara Palace. It was used for the most important ceremonial occasions of state. It was rebuilt to its former glory in 2010 to commemorate the 1300 anniversary of Nara becoming the first permanent capital of Japan. Major parts of the complex are also being reconstructed. When it's finished, it'll look amazing. 👀 #heijo #平城京 #daigokuden #japanesehistory #visitjapan #わたしは奈良派 #平城京 #jgrv_member #colore_de_saison #japan_daytime_view #perfexionpics #visitjapanjp #total_japan #nara #m_v_shoz #ptk_japan #histrip_japan #jalan_travel #otonatbi_japan #大極殿

The Culture of Japanese Fascism is a collection of essays about art, literature, architecture and more in Japan in the build up to WWII. Was Japan fascist? This series of essays largely leaves this question unanswered, but argues persuasively that aspects of Japanese culture at that time were indeed fascist. Like many other nations, Japan struggled to navigate the transition to capitalist, industrialized, modernity. In Japan, there was the added challenge of adapting to a more Westernized political and cultural world. Many artists, authors, and influential thinkers were overcome by nostalgia and nationalism. They sought refuge in stories of the Japanese countryside and traditional ways of life. Like fascists in Germany, Japanese culture clung to myths about the country's past and invented a specific, essentialized notion of what it meant to be Japanese. It was said that Japanese people had a unique spiritual connection to the land. That their nation was destined to expand and "civilize" other parts of Asia. They were encouraged to discard Western notions of individualism and give themselves unreservedly to the nation and emperor. These developments are elaborated in great detail through studies of literature, cinema, plans for an international exhibit, etc. There's even a chapter on Japanese dog breeds: They were promoted as having intrinsically Japanese characteristics and described as superior to other breeds. Some of the essays describe the mixed results of efforts to create a unified fascist culture or aesthetic. The architectural plans for the National Diet Building (where Japanese parliament meets) are one such example. Some people wanted it to use design elements immediately identifiable as Japanese. However, others wanted it to use a neoclassical style to be recognizable to other nations as a sign of Japan's adoption of modern political forms. This shows the mix of pride in a mythologized "Japaneseness" and the inferiority complex experienced by those who perceived Japanese culture as losing out to Western culture. A few of the essays were quite challenging, but I learned so much about Japan in the early 20th century and fascism more generally.

-𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙒𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙩- The book we introduced in this week's Monday quiz was: 𝙆𝙤𝙠𝙤𝙧𝙤 by 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙨𝙪𝙢𝙚 𝙎ō𝙨𝙚𝙠𝙞🎉 Sōseki is known as one of Japan's greatest novelists. His lifetime (1867-1916) closely coincided with the Meiji period, a time of rapid changes for the Japanese society. This period incorporated a clash of the old Confucian moral code and Western individualism, which also strongly influenced Sōsekis writing and inner struggles. In Kokoro he explores themes of identity and alienation in these times of cultural change for Japan. The Japanese word "Kokoro" ( 心 ) can be translated as "the thinking and feeling heart" and states a contrast to a purely rational cognition.🫀 We hope you enjoyed this week's quiz. Congratulations to everyone who guessed correctly! Discovering the longest sword and largest mirror in ancient Japan ⬇️ In January 2023, the finds from excavations within the Tomio Maruyama burial mound in Nara city caused a media sensation: they had unearthed the longest sword ever discovered in the country. This extraordinary artefact is well over 2m in length, making it doubtful that the sword could have been brandished by a single individual in ceremonies, let alone combat. It was joined in the tomb by a mirror that is also the largest known in Japan, and further distinguished by it's graceful decoration. Last issue, in the second in a two-part series on Japanese tombs, we examined what the combination of these objects might signify, and how the story is developing. ☆ ☆ #historiajaponesa #hikeshi #hikeshispirit #bomberos #bomberosjaponeses #japón #japon #japan #periodoedo#épocaedo #historias #tradiciones #historiadejapon #japanesehistory #instajapan #insta_japan #insta_of_japan#火消し #historygram#江戸時代 #edoperiod #edo

Ishida Mitsunari (born 1559 - November 6, 1600) was a Japanese warrior and a military commander of the late Sengoku period of Japan. He became well known because of his defeat in the famous Battle of Sekigahara. This defeat allowed the Tokugawa Family to become the undisputed rulers of Japan. During his early life, Toyotomi Hideyoshi visited a temple where Mitsunari served a cup of tea. Hideyoshi was very impressed with his tea serving skill and he was offered to work under Hideyoshi. Under Hideyoshi, Mitsunari got promoted as Hideyoshi continued to win was and conquer new territories. He had clerical jobs because he was good at calculation and management. However, Mitsunari was not very good at fighting and because of that, he did not have a good relationship with other barbaric samurai. When Hideyoshi died because of an illness, Mitsunari was left with the responsibility to protect the Toyotomi Clan. However, as time passed, the people who previously worked under Hideyoshi started to act selfishly against Mitsunari. Since Mitsunari did not have the best relationship against Ieyasu and his peers, he had been attacked several times. Ieyasu gained more power within the Toyotomi clan. In 1600, the Battle of Sekigahara broke out. It was between Ieyasu, who was gaining power to beat the Toyotomi clan and unify Japan, and Mitsunari, who tried to protect the Toyotomi clan. Some people from the Toyotomi clan switched to Ieyasu's side because they were growing tired of Mitsunari sticking to Toyotomi's ideas. In terms of numbers, Mitsunari was superior, however some samurais betrayed him in the middle of the battle. The Battle of Sakigahara was popular, but also it was the shortest battle in history, settled in just one day. He ended up losing and was arrested and transported to Kyoto. He, however, had no regrets as he continued to fight for the Toyotomi clan until the end. Mitsunari was beheaded on November 6, 1600. His head was displayed publicly afterwards on Kyōto's Sanjō Bridge. You can purchase Ishida Mitsunari's wearable armor model at : https://japan1ban.com/products/y-055-ishida-mitsunari-standard

Were you asked to pay entrance fee? That's the "evidence of genuine". Hikone Castle is one of the only 12 castles which castle tower (天守閣 / Tenshukaku) has remained since it was built in Edo era. The castle tower of Hikone is also one of the five that are registered as the National Treasure of Japan. Approx 95 % of Japanese castles, which were particularly built much in Sengoku era as the military bases, were abolished in Edo era owning to the policies of Tokugawa Shogunate - the daimyo (大名: feudal lords) were allowed to have only one castle per a province or per his territory(一国一城令 / Ikkoku Ichijo Rei). Also the constructions of new castles was prohibited, and they were required to get shogunate's permission, in order to renovate their castles (武家諸法度 / Buke Shohatto). Tokugawa intended to limit daimyo's military power, and the policies at the same time led to lowering the role of castles as a military base, and strengthening the role as a government office. The political function of castles was also lost after the Abolition of the han system in Meiji era. The feudal lords (called 知藩事 chihanji at that time) were offered to move to Tokyo, and the castles lost ther owners.

Kaiju United is devastated by the loss of Akira Nakao. Best known for his roles in 6 Godzilla films across the Heisei and Millennium series, Nakao brought Commander Takaki Aso, leader of G-FORCE, to life in "Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II" through "Godzilla Vs. Destoroyah." Akira also portrayed the villainous Tokugawa Muneharu in the show Abarenbō Shōgun for twenty years.

There are so many tourist destinations everywhere in Japan largely thanks to the numerous samurai processions that took place between 1635 and 1867 ☺️. The samurai government back then was basically a feudal system where a shogun ruled over 250 or so regions that were each ruled by a samurai lord. Samurai were experts in warfare. Allowing samurai lords to accumulate financial power was considered a threat to the regime. So, to drain their savings, the central government mandated all samurai lords to parade to Tokyo and then back every two year, just to say hi, and bye, to the shogun. The size of the parade was determined in accordance to the production capacity of the region each samurai lord ruled: the smallest was a party of 50, and the biggest was a party of 4000! The biggest such procession traveled 464 km (288 miles) on foot. That’s 4000 people walking for 13 nights, costing a grand total of 2.1 million dollars 😫! And that’s just one way. “If we could travel a night less, we’d save 160,000 dollars…!” samurai lords thought. So while they paraded slowly in the city where onlookers came to watch the spectacle (so that they’d look posh), they made their men power-walk in the countryside where no one would catch them trying to cut corners 😂. Thanks to these samurai lords dropping off travel fees everywhere in Japan, the domestic tourism industry grew and thrived thoroughout. Something to think about when walking through the old shopping streets of Naritasan, where some of the processions took place 😌. Hi, I’m Kyota, the author of Amazon Best Sellers [Folk Tales of Japan] and [Underdogs of Japanese History].
