In the process of conscious learning, over and above the world of things, we are told we must also learn of the things beyond the world; but before trying to know the things beyond, we must know the controller and support of the universe called God, so that other things may be known with His help. Who is God and how is He to be propitiated? We are told that this is to be achieved by forming friendship with saintly persons and by regularly and devoutly carrying out their instructions; but then, we are told, it is a matter of rare good fortune that one comes across such a saintly soul, and when one comes across such a person, by rare good fortune, the saintly soul tells us, “You yourself are God. Think of Him alone, meditate on His being. Do not engage yourself in thinking of anybody else.” For a while I used to deal with various matters and perform activities such as knowing and learning with the idea that I was a human being, born of the “I” consciousness; next I started meditating on myself as God in order to know myself. Now I know that I am the knower of whatever I remember, perceive, or feel; hence, ignoring all that is remembered, perceived, or felt, I contemplate on the nature of the knower. I am sitting in a secluded place where none can see me, with my eyes half closed. Whatever I remember, perceive, feel or experience comes into being from within myself. My meditation is my torch and what I see is its light, all that I see and remember is just the light of my meditation. Now I do not feel the necessity to meditate anymore, for the nature of meditation is such that it is spontaneous. THE 'I AM'- ILLNESS, HAS COME UPON MY 'TRUE NATURE' "Whatever the state is when we did not know anything, that is our True State, that is 'Reality'. ... In that state, we did not even know our own existence! Then - Spontaneously, came the message, or thought, or the knowledge: 'I AM'. This knowledge - 'I AM', started the sense of duality - 'subject and object', 'sin and merit', and the entire gamut of 'inter-related opposites'. Whatever was before the knowledge 'I AM,' is Truth; whatever is subsequent to the knowledge, or Consciousness of 'I AM', is false! Understand this basic fact: 'I-AM-ness'; The Sense Of Presence, has been given various laudatory names; like Maya, Prakriti, Ishwara etc., but nevertheless IT is 'an illusion' - 'Pure Ignorance'! Sleep and Ignorance Mr.C. sat near the Master's couch and read aloud the following verse from Vivekachudamani: "The blissful sheath (Anandamayakosha) has its fullest play in deep sleep, whilst in the dream and waking states it has only a partial manifestation, occasioned by the experience of agreeable objects. "In sushupti (deep sleep) one enjoys a whole ocean of bliss like a king; whereas in the other two states the range of bliss is as wide as are the classes of men, from the king down to the penniless. " Mr. C.: Sushupti is often characterised as the state of ignorance. Bhagavan: No, it is the pure State. There is full awareness in it and total ignorance in the waking state. It is said to be ajnana (ignorance) only in relation to the false jnana (knowledge) prevalent in jagrat (waking). Really speaking, jagrat is ajnana and sushupti, prajnana (wisdom). If sushupti is not the real state where does the intense peace come from to the sleeper? It is everybody's experience that nothing in jagrat can compare with the bliss and well-being derived from deep sleep, when the mind and the senses are absent. What does it all mean? It means that bliss comes only from inside ourselves and that it is most intense when we are free from thoughts and perceptions, which create the world and the body, that is, when we are in our pure Be-ing, which is Brahman, the Self. In other words, the Be-ing alone is bliss and the mental superimpositions are ignorance and, therefore, the cause of misery. Wake up! Give up all your foolish habits ============================= Everything is God, or karma. God is karma. You're giving up your karma as you let go of everything mentally. It is only then that you will shine. For you have always shone, you have always been consciousness, but you got so caught up in the world that you have forgotten who you are. Remember who you are. Remember. Who were you before you were born? If you sit still the answer will come to you. Before you were born, I-am. You have always been I-am. All of your births, all of your deceases, everything that prevails cannot eliminate the I-am. You are I-am. When you sit in the silence it will come to you. You will see how the body came to be, and how the body goes, and a new body comes to be, and a new body goes. But you are alive. The real you persists. Nothing can ever destroy it. Water cannot drown it. Fire cannot burn it. Whatever happens to the body in this world cannot eliminate the I am. It has nothing to do with your age, or whether you are well or sick, or rich or poor. It is the Self. It has always been and it will always be. It is you. You never were a human being. You just have forgotten your real nature and you're living the mortal dream. I ask you to awaken. I ask you to awaken now. Feel your-self awakening. Feel your body melting, dissolving. Yet no real change is taking place, for there's nothing to change. You see, there's no real body that has to be transformed. We're not speaking of transformation. You're not transforming your body into a body of light, or into consciousness, or into absolute reality. What appears to be your body is the Self, pure awareness. This appears to be your body. And the body you look at in the mirror does not even exist. If your body really existed you would have a very hard time with it, to get rid of it. Your body, like the world, the universe, what we call God, has no real existence by itself. It is the Self which permeates the universe. Everything is the Self. That is why everything is sacred. Mr. Phillips, an Englishman who used to be a missionary and is now a teacher and who has been about 20 years in Hyderabad, came this morning. He said: “I lost my son in the war. What is the way for his salvation?” Bhagavan was silent for a while and then replied. “Your worry is due to thinking. Anxiety is a creation of the mind. Your real nature is peace. Peace has not got to be achieved; it is our nature. To find consolation, you may reflect: ‘God gave, God has taken away; He knows best’. But the true remedy is to enquire into your true nature. It is because you feel that your son does not exist that you feel grief. If you knew that he existed you would not feel grief. That means that the source of the grief is mental and not an actual reality. There is a story given in some books how two boys went on a pilgrimage and after some days news came back that one of them was dead. However, the wrong one was reported dead, and the result was that the mother who had lost her son went about as cheerful as ever, while the one who had still got her son was weeping and lamenting. So it is not any object or condition that causes grief but only our thought about it. Your son came from the Self and was absorbed back into the Self. Before he was born, where was he apart from the Self? He is our Self in reality. In deep sleep the thought of ‘I’ or ‘child’ or ‘death’ does not occur to you, and you are the same person who existed in sleep. If you enquire in this way and find out your real nature, you will know your son’s real nature also. He always exists. It is only you who think he is lost. The mind exists in two states: as water and as honey. The water vibrates at the least disturbance, while the honey, however disturbed, returns quickly to immobility. You may have chronic fever and shiver all the time. It is desires and fears that make the mind restless. Free from all negative emotions it is quiet. You think you are coming and going, passing through various states and moods. I see things as they are, momentary events, presenting themselves to me in rapid succession, deriving their being from me, yet definitely neither me nor mine. Among phenomena I am not one, nor subject to any. I am independent so simply and totally, that your mind, accustomed to opposition and denial, cannot grasp it. I mean literally what I say: I do not need to oppose, or deny, because it is clear to me that I cannot be the opposite or denial of anything. I am just beyond, in a different dimension altogether. Do not look for me in identification with, or opposition to something: I am where desire and fear are not. Now, what is your experience? Do you also feel that you stand totally aloof from all transient things? Set your intellect aside. Don't use it in these matters. Why do you talk of action? Are you acting ever? Some unknown power acts and you imagine that you are acting. You are merely watching what happens, without being able to influence it in any way.
