Q : What is the nature of the mind? ********************************** What is called 'mind' is a wondrous power residing in the Self. It causes all thoughts to arise. Apart from thoughts, there is no such thing as mind. Therefore, thought is the nature of mind. Apart from thoughts, there is no independent entity called the world. In deep sleep there are no thoughts, and there is no world. In the states of waking and dream, there are thoughts, and there is a world also. Just as the spider emits the thread (of the web) out of itself and again withdraws it into itself, likewise the mind projects the world out of itself and again resolves it into itself. When the mind comes out of the Self, the world appears. Therefore, when the world appears (to be real), the Self does not appear; and when the Self appears (shines) the world does not appear. When one persistently inquires into the nature of the mind, the mind will end leaving the Self (as the residue). What is referred to as the Self is the Atman. The mind always exists only in dependence on something gross; it cannot stay alone. It is the mind that is called the subtle body or the soul (jiva). What the sages sought they have found at last. No more questions have they to ask of life. With self-will extinguished, they are at peace. LEVELS OF SPIRITUAL QUALTIES Men may be divided into four classes: those bound by the fetters of the world, the seekers after liberation, the liberated and the ever-free. Among the ever-free we may count sages like Narada. They live in the world for the good of others, to teach men spiritual truths. Those in bondage are sunk in worldliness and are forgetful of God. Not even by mistake do they think of God. The seekers after liberation want to free themselves from attachment to the world. Some of them succeed and others do not. The liberated souls, such as the Sadhus and Mahatmas, are not entangled in the world, in 'woman and gold.' Their minds are free from worldliness. Besides they always meditate on the Lotus Feet of God. Suppose a net has been cast into a lake to catch fish. Some fish are so clever that they are never caught in the net. They are like the ever-free. But most of the fish are entangled in the net. Some of them try to free themselves from it, and they are like those who seek liberation. But not all the fish that straggle succeed. A very few do jump out of the net, making a big splash in the water. Then the fishermen shout, 'Look! There goes a big one!' But most of the fish caught in the net cannot escape, nor do they make any effort to get out. On the contrary, they burrow into the mud with the net in their mouths and lie there quietly, thinking, 'We need not fear any more;ÍŸ we are quite safe here.' But the poor things do not know that the fishermen will drag them out with the net. These are like the men bound to the world. A person begins with dissatisfaction. Not content with the world. he seeks satisfaction of desires by prayers to God; his mind is purified; he longs to know God more than to satisfy his carnal desires. Then God's Grace begins to manifest. God takes the form of a Guru and appears to the devotee; teaches him the Truth; purifies the mind by his teachings and contact; the mind gains strength, is able to turn inward; with meditation it is purified yet further, and eventually remains still without the least ripple. That stillness is the Self. The Guru is both exterior and interior. From the exterior he gives a push to the mind to turn inward; from the interior he pulls the mind towards the Self and helps the mind to achieve quietness. That is Grace. Hence there is no difference between God, Guru and Self. ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi ~ Talk 198 #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams  #vedanta #life #motivation

Advice on Sadhana- straight pointing Blanca Schlamm who was later Swami Atmananda recorded her experiences with Anandamayi Ma. Here the teaching phase begins when Blanca had resigned her job as a teacher in a Krishnamurti school in order to stay full time with Ma for one year. 5th July, 1946 Asked Her again about sadhana. She said: "When you find that the happiness and pain of the world are not worthwhile, you turn within to the Atma, which although you don't really know, you still aspire to. This intense aspiration alters the rhythm of your breath and puts you in a state of 'dhyan’ that turns one deeply within. That also is not the true Atma nor is the shunya (state of emptiness) generated through the 'dhyan', but that is how you start. Don't give any thought to anything else. Remember that all thought of the world binds you. Do only the minimum that is necessary: eating, dressing, walking, and for the rest be immersed in the search for Him. In what form He will appear to you, you don’t know; but don't worry about anything else. Don't mix with the Ashram people. You are only here to see Me and for the rest keep to yourself. Don't talk and laugh with others. Accustom the mind to contemplate Atma all the time, whatever you may do outwardly.” Death Must Die, p. 246 #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #anandamayima #Anandamayi

17th August 1948 10-15 a.m. Mr. Rappold, an American devotee opens his eyes from meditation in which he seems to have been deeply sunk and raises his voice: Rappold: Bhagavan, what should a devotee do at the time of death? Bhagavan: A devotee never dies, rather he is already dead. (Then he stops and waits for a competent translator. Devaraja Mudaliar enters. Bhagavan completes the answer.) What should a devotee do at the time of death? What can he do? Whatever a man thinks in his lifetime, so he does in his last moment – the worldly man thinks of his worldly affairs and the devotee of devotion and spiritual matters. But a Jnani having no thoughts of any kind remains the same. His thoughts, having died long ago, his body also died with them. Therefore, for him, there is no such thing as death. Again, people fear death because they fear losing their possessions. When they go to sleep they do not have such fear at all. Although sleep resembles death in leaving all possessions behind, it causes no fear in their hearts because of the knowledge that the next morning they will enter into their possessions once again. The Jnani, having no sense of possession, is entirely free from the fear of death. He remains the same after death as before it. - S.S.Cohen, Guru Ramana, p. 110 #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

Doubting all, refusing all, unwilling to learn through another - it is the fruit of your long 'sadhana'. It took you where you are - now. You began as a child and you will end as a child. Whatever you have acquired in the meantime you must lose and start at the beginning. The child kicks. Let it kick. Just look at the kicking. And if you are too afraid of society to kick convincingly, look at that too. I know it is a painful business, but there is no remedy - except one - the search for remedies must cease. If you are angry or in pain, separate yourself from anger and pain and watch them. Externalization is the first step to liberation. Step away and look. The physical events will go on happening, but by themselves they have no importance. It is the mind alone that matters. If you deal with society you must accept its ways, for its ways are your ways. Your needs and demands have created them. Your desires are so complex and contradictory - no wonder the society you create is also complex and contradictory. You want immediate results! We do not dispense magic here. Everybody makes the same mistake: refusing the means, but wanting the ends. You want peace and harmony in the world, but refuse to have them in yourself. Follow my advice implicitly and you will not be disappointed. I cannot solve your problem by mere words. You have to act on what I told you and persevere. It is not the right advice that liberates, but the action based on it. Just keep quiet. You have nothing else to do. My Guru did the same. He would tell me something and then say: 'Now keep quiet. Don't go on ruminating all the time. Stop. Be silent.' All that needs doing can be done in peace and silence. There is no need to get upset. In the ultimate reality, there’s nothing as we know it, as we conceive it. As long as you’re able to voice it, it’s false. As long as you can think about it, it does not exist. Reality is silence, not words. ~ Robert Adams. Everything is perfect just the way it is. If it doesn't appear that way to you, it's not because it's not perfect. It is because you have your ideas since childhood of what right and wrong, good and bad is. Therefore some particular situations make you feel very upset. Some particular situations make you feel happy. They're both impostors. Your real nature is bliss. That bliss is omnipresent. If you see your Self as bliss, you will see everything in the universe as bliss, from the mineral kingdom to the human kingdom. You will no longer look on them as kingdoms. You will see the one bliss shining through all. Wake up! Understand who you really are. You are not limited to a body. You are not the body that appears. You are that which you have always been, sat-chit-ananda. Robert Adams đŸ’•đŸ„° You think about your bodily comforts. You think about food, lodging, work and money, health and whatever. It's these very thoughts that keep you away from your highest good. If you were able to stop your mind from thinking, a mysterious power would take over and you would find that you're in a better position than you've ever been in your life by not thinking. ~Robert Adams #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

- Robert, can you describe a devotee? -"Humility, total humility. A devotee is a being who has come through many lifetimes with a master. He or she is totally different than a disciple or a seeker. A devotee doesn't want to think about anything else anymore. The truth, the teaching, that is all they care about. They have finished running around the world. Finished going into this teaching, that teaching. Going and seeing Baba-Loo on Sunday and Baba-Hari on Wednesday and Baba on Thursday. I always give the example of Ramana Maharshi and the person pulling the fan. One of his devotees was Jo, he was pulling the fan for thirty-five years. He sat there and pulled the fan for Sri Ramana. He wanted nothing, cared for nothing. In the West, it sounds like a stupid person. But it's far from being stupid. One day he was pulling the fan, he was about 80 years old and he dropped dead. And Sri Ramana looked and he said"he will not come back again, he's totally realized". The West has not had a good understanding of a devotee. Remember there are many teachers, teachers all over the place. But where can you find a good devotee?. So I would say a quality of devotee is total humility, total love, unbounded love, total joy in what they're doing. They are not stupid people. In the Western mind they might appear to be sort of stupid. For they care about nothing but serving the master, taking care of the teacher, that is all they care about. Maybe they know something we don't. Something to think about. So the (true devotee 's) quality is humility, total humility. Nothing like "I want this" or "I want that" or "I want to become this "or "I want to become that". They have totally surrendered to the Self in the form of the guru. There is a lot to this" Robert Adams November 8th, 1992 #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

The wise person, therefore, does really not look to change anything. They become quiet. They have patience. They work on themselves. They watch their thoughts, watch their actions and observe themselves getting angry, observe themselves getting depressed, observe themselves getting jealous and envious and the rest of it. Little by little they realize, "That's not me. That's hypnosis. That's a lie." They do not react to their condition. To the extent that they do not react to their condition, to that extent do they become free. They no longer care what anybody else is doing. They compare themselves with no one. They compete with no one. They simply watch themselves. They observe themselves. They see the mental confusion. They don't run around shouting, "I am absolute reality. I am God. I am consciousness." Rather, they see where they're coming from and they leave everyone else alone. Such a being unfolds at a fast rate. It makes no difference what predicament such a being is in. It doesn't matter, for such a being is already free. When the mind rests in the heart, that means when the mind does not go out any longer and identify with the world, when the mind rests in the heart there is peace, there is harmony, there is pure being. When you allow your mind to go out of yourself it begins to compare, it begins to judge, it begins to feel offended, and there is no peace. There’s no rest. How do you begin? Well, first you realize the place that you're in right now, whether you think it's good or bad, whether you think you're happy or sad, whether you think you're rich, or poor, or sick, or healthy, the place where you’re in right now is your right place. That's a beginning. You stop trying to be someone else. You stop trying to change your life. You’re in your right place, right now, just the way you are. If you can become happy and peaceful in the place where you are right now, all of a sudden you will find circumstances will change in your favor, and then again you will be in your right place. Whatever change comes along as far as your body-mind is concerned, you’re in your right place. The more you can see that, the more you can look at what I just Continues

Visitor: “Are we One with Christ?” Robert Adams: "We are One with Christ, we are One with eternity, we are One with consciousness...we are One with Christ, it's true! We have always been One with Christ. So , when Christ says: “It is not you who have chosen me, it is I who have chosen you” (John 15.16), this is ultimately true because there is only Christ. There is only the Self, consciousness, reality. Everything is reality, everything is Christ. Christ cannot help choosing you because you are all that is! There is only One without a second and You Are That" August 8, 1991. đŸ„°đŸ„€đŸŒ» You are the Answer Oh there are things that you have to give up physically also. If you find you’re on drugs, you drink too much, if you have bad habits, you have to work on yourself to an extent. You work on yourself by practicing self-inquiry. Who needs these habits? Who needs to get high on drugs? Who needs a drink to relax them? Who needs to be entertained by the TV or the radio, or anything else? Who needs these things? Realizing all the time it was the ‘I’. The ‘I’ was fooling you all of these years. By making you believe that if you find the right mate, if you find the right guru, if you find the right book, if you find the right state to live in, right country, the right friend you will be happy. Keep going deeper and deeper, further and further, beyond everything. Do not settle for anything except the ultimate. Keep watching yourself, keep observing yourself, and keep going deeper. You can go as deep as you like; it's up to you. ~Robert Adams There is absolutely nothing in this world, or anywhere else, to worry about. No matter how things may appear in your life, all is well. You are divinity itself, just the way you are. Now when you start to think about just the way you are, you spoil it, for you say to yourself, "How can I be divinity? I'm this and I'm that." Who told you to think? Your thoughts will do it to you all the time. You simply remain in that moment. In that moment all is well. In that moment you are free. In that moment you are filled with joy. As soon as you start to think about that, you spoil it. The secret therefore is to stay in the moment. Never leave the moment. You become spontaneous. You never dwell on the past and you never concern yourself with the future. For if you are truly in the moment, the moment becomes your tomorrow, and your next week, and your next year. ~ The Collected Works of Robert Adams. #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

"As you get yourself out of the way, the same power that grows the grass, that causes the ïŹ‚owers to bloom, that grows oranges on orange trees, will take care of you. You have nothing to fear." ~ Robert Adams Self-realization comes when you no longer think about it when you no longer want it. When you totally surrender to the Sage saying, not my will but Thine be done. Keeping the Sages form and face before you all the time. The Sage realizes when you're ready, then grace comes, liberation comes, but do not think of these things. Your job is to develop tremendous humility. When I speak of developing humility, I'm not speaking of you becoming a stepping stone for people. Real humility is strength, power. Real humility means nothing bothers you anymore. Nothing has the power to disturb you, to upset your equilibrium. You have tremendous compassion. You develop loving-kindness for everything, for the mineral kingdom, for the vegetable kingdom, for the animal kingdom, for the human kingdom. You're stepping out of your humanhood, taking a step forward in eternity. Not comparing yourself with other people. Not trying to do anything to anybody else. You simply see the Sage in your heart all of the time and then you finally become the Sage yourself. ~Robert Adams #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

The mind is habituated to carrying out instructions in order to reach somewhere or to discover something phenomenally. However, real understanding occurs in the heart, which is not trying to accomplish anything. It only reveals the ever-present and timeless Truth we are. Attempting to understand consciousness with your mind is like trying to illuminate the sun with a candle. We expect to find something when searching for the Truth, but the Truth is not an object. It is the subject in front of whom is seen the illusory object-self searching for the Self it already is. It is like the lie hides the Truth, but only from the lie, for Truth cannot be hidden. The person has come into manifestation for a certain purpose. That purpose will be accomplished whether he considers himself the actor or not. (Bhagavan in 'Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi', Talk 643) You think that you are the body or that you are the mind. But there are occasions when you are free from both. For example in deep slumber, you create a body and a world in your dream. That represents your mental activities. In your waking state you think that you are the body and then the idea of forest and the rest arise. Now, consider the situation. You are an unchanging and continuous being who remains in all these states which are constantly changing and therefore transient. But you are always there. It follows that these fleeting objects are mere phenomena which appear on your being like pictures which move across a screen. The screen does not move when the picture moves. Similarly, you do not move from where you are even when the body leaves the home and mixes in society. Your body, the society, the forest and the ways are all in you; you are not in them. You are the body also but not this body only. If you remain as your pure Self, the body and its movements need not affect you. ~ Ramana Maharshi #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

One should not get angry. If someone insults you, you should take it as an insult to the body. Keep your mind (attitude) completely free of anger. To merely repress an impulse of anger (and keep quiet) is not an indication of absence of anger. Absence of anger implies absence of any reaction to an anger-provoking stimulus. If anything happens against your mind's liking and there is a surge of anger, it indicates a habit of wanting to dictate to others. (...) All is untrue in this world. How then can one thing evoke anger? Even that thing is untrue. This is the way one must think. One should recognize all the causes of anger in the mind. Book "Amrut Laya" The highest fortune of a Yogi is when detachment (the complete understanding that all this is false) gets rooted in him. This Maya or Illusion is so peculiar that it gives nothing to the one who begs and gives (all) to the one who does not ask. Everyone has developed a fondness for worldly objects, but the more detached one is, the happier he becomes. THERE IS NO PEACE OF MIND Q: I seek peace of mind. I got disgusted with all the cruel things done by the so-called Christians in the name of Christ. For some time I was without religion. Then I got attracted to Yoga. M: What did you gain? Q: I studied the philosophy of Yoga and it did help me. M: In what way did it help you? By what signs did you conclude that you have been helped? Q: Good health is something quite tangible. M: No doubt it is very pleasant to feel fit. Is pleasure all you expected from Yoga? Q: The joy of well-being is the reward of Hatha Yoga. But Yoga in general yields more than that. It answers many questions. M: What do you mean by Yoga? Q: The whole teaching of India -- evolution, reincarnation, karma, and so on. M: All right, you got all the knowledge you wanted. But in what way are you benefited by it? Q: It gave me peace of mind. M: Did it? Is your mind at peace? Is your search over? Q: No, not yet. M: Naturally. There will be no end to it, because there is no such thing as peace of mind. Mind means disturbance; restlessness itself is mind. Yoga is not an attribute of the mind, nor is it a state of mind. Q: Some measure of peace I did derive from Yoga. M: Examine closely and you will see that the mind is seething with thoughts. It may go blank occasionally, but it does it for a time and reverts to its usual restlessness. A becalmed mind is not a peaceful mind. You say you want to pacify your mind. Is he, who wants to pacify the mind, himself peaceful? Q: No. I am not at peace, I take the help of Yoga. M: Don't you see the contradiction? For many years you sought your peace of mind. You could not find it, for a thing essentially restless cannot be at peace. Q: There is some improvement. M: The peace you claim to have found is very brittle any little thing can crack it. What you call peace is only absence of disturbance. It is hardly worth the name. The real peace cannot be disturbed. Can you claim a peace of mind that is unassailable? Q: l am striving. M: Striving too is a form of restlessness. Q: So what remains? M: The Self does not need to be put to rest. It is peace itself, not at peace. Continues

SUBJECT- OBJECT RELATIONS IS MERELY BHAVANA D: Since Sri Bhagavan says that the Self may function at any of the centers or chakras while its seat is in the heart, is it not possible that by the practice of intense concentration or dhyana between the eyebrows this center may itself become the seat of the Self? M: As long as it is merely the stage of practice of concentration by fixing a place of controlling your attention, any consideration about the seat of the Self would merely be a theorization. You consider yourself as the subject, the seer, and the place whereon you fix your attention becomes the object seen. This is merely bhavana. When, on the contrary, you see the Seer himself, you merge in the Self, you become one with it; that is the Heart. - Maharshi's Gospel CONVERSATIONS WITH ANNAMALAI SWAMI THE SELF IS POWER Q: Can 't some use be made of this energy (of the Self)? What can one do with it? AS: Shakti is the Self and the Self is shakti. When you know that you are not the body or the mind, how can you do anything? In that state, there will be no ‘I’ to instigate any activity. In that state, everything will happen automatically. Water in a lake sustains many life forms: fish and plants inside the water; trees, plants and animals along the shoreline. If you are filled with the energy of the Self, that energy flows out of you and nourishes everyone in your vicinity. You don't have to direct this power outwards. If you have done enough tapas this energy will flow of its own accord. Shakti is the shanti of the Self. If you do tapas and if you don't dissipate your energy through sensory indulgence you will feel the power of the Self accumulating inside you. You can also feel it radiating outwards to the people around you. You don't lose your power when you radiate it naturally like this because the power of the Self is infinite. You only lose it if you move your attention away from the Self and get involved in pointless mental and sensory excesses. To know that which is foreign [to one’s Self] without knowing the Self which is the knower of those things that are known — how can this be knowledge and not ignorance? Upon knowing the Self, which is the foundation both for knowledge and for its object [the world], knowledge and ignorance will indeed cease to exist. ||Reality in Forty Verses. Verse 11|| 🕉 SRI RAMANA MAHARISHI Sadhana is only to get rid of this illusion Though Bhagavan was teaching us so clearly that sakshatkaram means only the good state and the good ideas beyond the owner's thoughts, I felt it a great pity that we were not able to understand it. While I was thus thinking, someone asked, "That state of exalted thought and existence which is above the owner's mental plane is natural and possible only for people like Bhagavan, but is it possible for ordinary people like us without sadhana?" Bhagavan said, "Certainly it is! Sadhana is necessary but for what purpose? His Self is there at all times and at all places. So there is no need to try and get it from somewhere else. Sadhana is only to get rid of the bodily and other illusions which are in the way of the self standing up as Self. This delusion arises only by thinking that this bodily world is real, instead of looking at the Self, which is real. Sadhana is only to get rid of this illusion. Otherwise, why should there be sadhana for the Self to attain its own Self? He who has realised his own Self does not recognize anything else." "All sadhanas are for getting rid of the delusion that you are the body." — Letters From Sri Ramanasramam, No.63 & 68 #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

Humility One’s greatness increases to the extent one becomes humble. The reason why God is Supreme to such an extent that the whole universe bows to Him, is His sublime state of humility in which the deluded ego never rises inadvertently. (494) For a wise aspirant who seeks to gain true greatness, it is best to pay his homage [namaskarams] to others until complete egolessness is achieved. On the other hand, it is indeed dangerous for him to accept homage from others. (495) Sadhu Om: The wise aspirant mentioned here is only he who aims at Self-realization. Since the ego subsides by doing namaskarams to others, it is pointed out to be ‘best’, and since the ego waxes by accepting namaskarams from others, it is pointed out to be ‘indeed dangerous’. - The teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi. N. Maharaj: Question: Why is half humanity male and half female? Maharaj: " For their happiness. The impersonal (Avyakta) becomes the personal ( Vyakta) for the sake of happiness in relationships. By the grace of my Guru I can look with equal eye on the impersonal as well as the personal. Both are one to me. In life, the personal merges in the impersonal. " Q: How does the personal emerge from the impersonal? M:" Twe two are but aspects of the one Reality. It is not correct to talk of one preceding the other. All these ideas belong to the waking state. " Q: What brings in the waking state? M;" At the root of all creation lies desire. Desire and imagination foster and reinforce each other. The fourth state (turiya) is a state of pure witnessing. detached Awareness, passionless and wordless. It is like space unaffected by whatever it contains. Bodily and mental troubles do not reach it- they are outside, 'there', while the witness is always 'here'. " Q; What is real, the subjective or the objective? I am inclined to believe that the objective universe is the real one and my subjective psyche is changeful and transient. You seem to claim reality for your inner, subjective states and deny all reality to the concrete, external world. M:" Both the subjective and the objective are changeful and transient. There is nothing real about them. Find the permanent in the fleeting, the one constant factor in every experience. " Q: What is the constant factor? M:" My giving it various names and pointing it out in many ways will not help you much, unless you have the capacity to see. A dim-sighted man will not see the parrot or the branch of a tree, however much you may prompt him to look. At best, he will see your pointed finger. First, purify your vision, learn to see, instead of staring, and you will perceive the parrot. Also, you must be eager to see. You need both clarity and earnestness for self-knowledge. The nature of the Self cannot be thought of. We can never contemplate on ourselves. A simple remedy for this is to treat your consciousness as the Guru. It is pleased when it is worshipped this way. Convince yourself by saying that you are Brahman. Follow that as the Guru’s word. There is nothing as perfect as Self-realization. There is nothing as imperfect as body-consciousness. The Guru’s word is ‘I am formless, sinless, pure consciousness’. A true devotee should never give importance to what people say. He should be firmly rooted in his Self-realization. !!! The consciousness is acting as a whole. No doer is there. We look at ourselves as doers, and therefore we want to witness it, which cannot be done. Therefore, abide in the words of the Guru, which are: You are the all-pervading subtle principle, subtler than space. Identify yourself with that. The trouble is, all of you want to derive some benefit from your concepts and ideas. Don't employ any thoughts for your use. Without recourse to thought, understand and remain. What is love? Is it not a state of being rather than a state of mind? Must you know that you love in order to love? Did you not love your mother unknowingly? Your craving for her love, for an opportunity to love her, is it not the movement of love? Is not love as much a part of you, as consciousness of being? You sought the love of your mother, because you loved her. You were unhappy all your life because you did not go down to the very roots of your being. It is your complete ignorance of yourself that covered up your love and happiness and made you seek for what you have never lost. Love is will, the will to share your happiness with all. BHAGAVAN AND THE BABY SQUIRRELS In the roof of the Old Hall, squirrels would build nests. Once, some new-born squirrels dropped on Bhagavan’s sofa. Their eyes remained yet unopened and the size of each baby may not have been more than an inch; they were very red in colour with fresh flesh, absolutely tender to touch. The mother squirrel ignored them. Now what to do? How to feed and attend to such tender things? The baby squirrels were in the palm of Bhagavan. Bhagavan’s face glowed with love and affection for them. While there was a question mark in the faces of those who surrounded Bhagavan, He Himself was happy and cheerful. He asked for some cotton to be brought. He made a soft bed for them. He also took a bit of cotton and squeezed it to such a tiny end, the end portion looked like a sharp pin. He dipped it in milk and squeezed milk into the tiny mouths. At regular intervals, Bhagavan repeated this act of compassion. He tended them with great care and love till they grew up and ran around. They did not run away, only ran around their ‘Mother’. You want something like a round-the-clock ecstasy. Ecstasies come and go, necessarily, for the human brain cannot stand the tension for a long time. A prolonged ecstasy will burn out your brain, unless it is extremely pure and subtle. In nature nothing is a standstill, everything pulsates, appears and disappears. Heart, breath, digestion, sleep and waking, birth and death - everything comes and goes in waves. When I say: remember 'I am' all the time, I mean: 'come back to it repeatedly'. No particular thought can be mind's natural state, only silence. Not the idea of silence but silence itself. When the mind is in its natural state, it reverts to silence spontaneously after every experience or, rather, every experience happens against the background of silence. Now what you have learnt here becomes the seed. You may forget it - apparently, but it will live and in due season sprout and grow and bring forth flowers and fruits. All will happen by itself. You need not do anything, only don't prevent it. The Self is God. 'I am' is God. 'Is God apart from the Self?' - this question arises because you are holding on to the ego self. It will not arise if you hold onto the true Self. For the real Self will not and cannot ask anything. If God be apart from the Self he must be a Self-less God, which is absurd. God, who seems to be non-existent, alone truly exists, whereas the individual, who seems to be existing, is ever non-existent. Sages say that the state in which one thus knows one's own non-existence [sunya] alone is the glorious supreme knowledge. You now think that you are an individual, that there is the universe and that God is beyond the cosmos. So there is the idea of separateness. This idea must go. For God is not separate from you or the cosmos. The Gita also says: "The Self am I, O Lord of Sleep, In every creature's heart enshrined. The rise and noon of every form, I am its final doom as well." [Bhagavadgita, X.20] Thus God is not only in the heart of all, he is the prop of all, he is the source of all, their abiding place and their end. All proceed from him, have their stay in him, and finally resolve into him. Therefore he is not separate. All happenings are only in body consciousness. Personalities only exist in body consciousness. The usual knowledge is concerned only with the body image. You are not the body; you are the consciousness. There is no imprint of personality. It is the manifest consciousness which is functioning. This dynamic, manifest consciousness is always in a fluid state. What will happen, no one can say. This dynamic consciousness does not have any concept that something good or bad is going to happen to it; it is just happening. No one is doing it. The message "I Am" is there. The mind-flow is also there; it is not a personality, it is the consciousness. The very idea that you are the body is ridiculous; the consciousness is experiencing its manifestation. A rare being will realise this. The worldly life of a 'jnani' means the total functioning of consciousness. Normally, a person who is always thinking of others as personalities will not think of others simply as a function in consciousness. The play of the consciousness will not come down to an individual level. It is quite different. When you are stabilized in your own Self, then there is no otherness. You are everything. If you abide in your Self, you are like space and there is no duality left. You are as expansive and as subtle as the space, and that is liberation. You are not conditioned by any name or form. If you are like space, what is the point of going elsewhere? The space which is here is also everywhere else. Spirituality is not a child's play. My sentences will tear to pieces the doubts of anyone who listens to them. All you can do is to bite off, chew and swallow. All else is unconscious and automatic. Listen, remember and understand - the mind is both the actor and the stage. All is of the mind and you are not the mind. The mind is born and reborn, not you. The mind creates the world and all the wonderful variety of it. @bumlehri The disease is simple and the remedy equally simple. It is your mind only that makes you insecure and unhappy... Stop misusing your mind and all will be well with you... give up all concern with the past and the future and live entirely in the now. ~ Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. That which makes you think you are a human is not human. It is but a dimensionless point of consciousness, a conscious nothing; all you can say about yourself is ‘I am’ . You are pure being-awareness-bliss. To realize that is the end of all seeking. You come to it when you see that all you think yourself to be as mere imagination and stand aloof in pure awareness of the transient as transient, imaginary as imaginary, unreal as unreal. It is not at all difficult, but detachment is needed. It is clinging to the false that makes the true difficult to see. Once you see that the false needs time and what needs time is false, you are nearer the Reality, which is timeless and ever in the now. Eternity in time is mere repetitiveness, like the movement of a clock. It moves from the past into the future endlessly, an empty perpetuity. Reality is what makes the present so vital, so different from the past and future, which are merely mental. If you need time to achieve something, it must be false. The Real is always with you, you need not wait to be what you are. Only you must not allow your mind to go out of yourself in search. When you want something, ask yourself: do I really need it? And if the answer is no, then just drop it. đŸŒș Nisargadatta Maharaj #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

When one begins to die, hard breathing sets in; that means that one has become unconscious of the dying body. The mind at once takes hold of another body, and it swings to and fro between the two, until attachment is fully transferred to the new body. Meanwhile there are occasional violent breaths, and that means that the mind swings back to the dying body. The transitional state of the mind is somewhat like a dream. The interval between one's death and reincarnation may be long or short, but a 'jnani' does not undergo any such changes; he merges into the universal being. In fact, there is neither birth nor death. One remains only as what one really is. This is the only truth. If there is birth there must be not only one rebirth but a whole succession of births. Why and how did you get this birth? For the same reason and in the same manner you must have succeeding births. But if you ask who has the birth and whether birth and death are for you or for somebody distinct from you, then you realise the truth and the truth burns up all 'karmas' and frees you from all births. It is the ego that is the cause of all the world and of the countless sciences whose researches are so great as to baffle description, and if the ego is dissolved by enquiry all this immediately crumbles and the reality or Self alone remains. It is you who think that you will be reborn. But you are not the body and you have no birth and death. Examination of the ephemeral nature of external things leads to dispassion [vairagya]. Hence enquiry is the first and most important step. When it becomes automatic, it results in indifference to wealth, fame, ease, pleasure and so on. The "I" thought is traced to the source of the "I" in the Heart, which is the final goal. However, if the aspirant is temperamentally unsuited for Self-enquiry he must develop devotion. It may be to God or Guru or mankind in general or ethical laws or even an ideal of beauty. As any of these takes possession of him, other attachments grow weaker and dispassion develops. Attachment to the object of devotion grows until it dominates him completely, and with it grows concentration [ekagrata] with or without visions and direct aids. If neither enquiry nor devotion appeals to him, he can gain tranquility by breath control. This is the way of yoga. If a man's life is in danger, all his interest centres round the one point of saving it. If the breath is held, the mind cannot afford to jump out at its beloved outer objects and does not do so. Therefore there is peace of mind as long as the breath is held. Since all one's attention is concentrated on the breath, other interests are abandoned. Then also, any passion results in irregular breathing. A paroxysm of joy is in fact as painful as one of grief, and both result in disturbed breathing. Real peace is happiness, and pleasures do not produce happiness. If the aspirant is unsuited to the first two methods by temperament and to the third on account of age or health, he must try 'karma marga', the path of good deeds and social service. His nobler instincts are thus developed and he derives impersonal happiness from his actions. His ego becomes less assertive and its good side is enabled to develop. He thus in course of time comes to be suited for one of the three former paths. Or his intuition may be developed by 'karma marga' alone. 6-9-45 Afternoon A visitor asked, “What should one, who is an absolute beginner, do in this (i.e., spiritual) line?” Bhagavan: The very fact that you put this question shows you know what to do. It is because you feel the want of peace, that you are anxious to take some steps to secure peace. Because I have a little pain in my foot, I am applying this ointment. Visitor: What is the method to be adopted for securing peace? B: The conception that there is a goal and a path to it, is wrong. We are the goal or peace always. To get rid of the notion that we are not peace is all that is required. V: All books say that the guidance of a Guru is necessary. B: The Guru will say only what I am saying now. He will not give you anything you have not already. It is impossible for anyone to get what he has not got already. Even if he gets any such thing, it will go as it came. What comes will also go. What always is will alone remain. The Guru cannot give you anything new, which you have not already. Removal of the notion that we have not realised the Self is all that is required. We are always the Self. Only, we don’t realise it. The Asramam compounder asked some questions about his experiences during meditation. Bhagavan explained that the Self is the one reality that always exists and it is by its light all other things are seen. We forget it and concentrate on the appearances. The light in the hall burns, both when persons are present there and when they are absent, both when persons are enacting something as in a theatre and when nothing is being enacted. It is the light which enabled us to see the hall, the persons and the acting. We are so engrossed with the objects or appearances revealed by the light that we pay no attention to the light. In the waking state or dream state, in which things appear, and in the sleep state, in which we see nothing, there is always the light of consciousness or Self, like the hall-lamp always burning. The thing to do is to concentrate on the seer and not on the seen, not on the objects, but on the Light which reveals them. - Day by Day with Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry

Questioner: Don't we have to discard all knowledge? Maharaj: You must have a thorough knowledge of this consciousness, and having known everything about the consciousness you come to the conclusion that it is all unreal, and then it should drop off. Having listened to these talks, sit and meditate, "That which I have heard, is it true or not?" Then you will understand that this is also to be discarded. The principle which can pass judgment on whether the world is or is not, that principle antedates the world. That by which everything is known, whether it is or is not - who knows this? When I say Parabrahman, then you say that you understand. Names are merely an instrument for communicating. Do you understand what I am driving at? Q: The jnani knows that this is all an illusion, that there is no path; but if from within the illusion, one is convinced that there is a path, and there's somewhere to go, does it make sense to use techniques to get to that further illusion? M: Illusion - is it a word or not? Q: It's a word that relates to a concept. M: That is also a name only, is it not? Q: Yes. M: So what illusory word do you want that will satisfy you? - Consciousness and the Absolute. The final Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj To know one's real Self is bliss, to forget is sorrow. .......................................................... All suffering is born of desire. True love is never frustrated. How can the sense of unity be frustrated? What can be frustrated is the desire for expression. Such desire is of the mind. As with all things mental, frustration is inevitable. ............................................. Only when wrongly applied are desire and fear destructive. By all means desire the right and fear the wrong. But when people desire what is wrong and fear what is right, they create chaos and despair. 🕉 Nisarga Yoga: The Self Knowledge Teaching of Nisargadatta Maharaj #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta

Q: How is one to be free from the ‘I’-sense? M: You must deal with the ‘I’-sense if you want to be free of it. Watch it in operation and at peace, how it starts and when it ceases, what it wants and how it gets it, till you see clearly and understand fully. After all, all the Yogas, whatever their source and character, have only one aim: to save you from the calamity of separate existence, of being a meaningless dot in a vast and beautiful picture. You suffer because you have alienated yourself from reality and now you seek an escape from this alienation. You cannot escape from your own obsessions. You can only cease nursing them. It is because the ‘I am’ is false that it wants to continue. Reality need not continue — knowing itself indestructible, it is indifferent to the destruction of forms and expressions. To strengthen, and stabilize the ‘I am’ we do all sorts of things — all in vain, for the ‘I am’ is being rebuilt from moment to moment. It is unceasing work and the only radical solution is to dissolve the separative sense of ‘I am such-and-such person’ once and for good. Being remains, but not self-being. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj I AM THAT, Chapter 63 Notion of Doership is Bondage #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

Questioner: How to deal with people? Maharaj: Why make plans and what for? Such questions show anxiety. Relationship is a living thing. Be at peace with your inner self and you will be at peace with everybody. Realize that you are not the master of what happens, you cannot control the future except in purely technical matters. Human relationship cannot be planned, it is too rich and varied. Just be understanding and compassionate, free of all self-seeking. Questioner: Surely, I am not the master of what happens. Its slave rather. Maharaj: Be neither master, nor slave. Stand aloof. Questioner: Does it imply avoidance of action? Maharaj: You cannot avoid action. It happens, like everything else. Questioner: My actions, surely, I can control. Maharaj: Try. You will soon see that you do what you must. Questioner: I can act according to my will. M: You know your will only after you have acted. Questioner: I remember any desires, the choices made, the decisions taken and act accordingly. Maharaj: Then your memory decides, not you. Questioner: Where do I come in? Maharaj: You make it possible by giving it attention. - Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

Food is one item that keeps this energy - consciousness - in good order. What is born is the waking and sleep states and the concept of time and consciousness. Once this consciousness is conscious of itself, it takes on certain items as its own, because of conditioning, and others as not its own, and it will fight for and try to protect those which it considers its own. When consciousness realizes its potential power, its universality, the "me" and "mine" concept is lost. This universal consciousness is known as God, which is the Almighty, the Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent, all the attributes. These attributes are given to God in consciousness, not to the Absolute. The Absolute is without attributes. Pay no attention to thoughts. Don't fight them. Just do nothing about them; let them be, whatever they are. Your very fighting them gives them life. Just disregard. Look through. Remember to remember: 'whatever happens - happens because I am'. All reminds you that you are. Take full advantage of the fact that to experience you must 'be'. You need not stop thinking. Just cease being interested. It is disinterestedness that liberates. Don't hold on, that is all. The world is made of rings. The hooks are all yours. Make straight your hooks and nothing can hold you. Give up your addictions. There is nothing else to give up. Stop your routine of acquisitiveness, your habit of looking for results and the freedom of the universe is yours. Be effortless. What needs doing, do it. Don't resist. Your balance must be dynamic, based on doing just the right thing, from moment to moment. Don't be a child unwilling to grow up. Stereotyped gestures and postures will not help you. Rely entirely on your clarity of thought, purity of motive and integrity of action. You cannot possibly go wrong. Go beyond and leave all behind. ANNAMALAI SWAMI REMEMBERED Self-correction: ‘The sun is simply bright. It does not correct anyone.’ Bhagavan taught that one should reform oneself rather than find fault with others. In practical terms, this means that one should find the source of one's own mind rather than make complaints about other people's minds and actions. I can remember a typical reply that Bhagavan gave on this subject. A devotee, who was quite intimate with Bhagavan, asked him, ‘Some of the devotees who live with Bhagavan behave very strangely. They seem to do many things that Bhagavan does not approve of. Why does Bhagavan not correct them?' Bhagavan : 'Correcting oneself is correcting the whole world. The sun is simply bright. It does not correct anyone. Because it shines the whole world is full of light. Transforming yourself is a means of giving light to the whole world. ' Once, while I was sitting in the hall, someone complained to Bhagavan about one of the devotees who was sitting there: 'He is not meditating here; he is just sleeping.' Bhagwan : 'How can you know that?', 'Only because you yourself gave up your meditation to look at him! First, see yourself and don't concern yourself with other people's habits.' Bhagavan sometimes used to say: 'Some people who come here have two aims: they want Bhagavan to be perfect and they want the ashram to be perfect. To achieve this goal they make all kinds of complaints and suggestions. They don't come here to correct themselves; they only come here to correct others. These people don't seem to remember the reason why they came to Bhagavan in the first place If they do one namaskaram to us they think that the ashram is then their kingdom. Such people think that we ought to behave like their slaves, only doing whatever they think we ought to do.’ Excerpt from - Living by the Words of Bhagavan #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #nonduality #livingbythewordsofbhagavan

YOU CAN ONLY SEE WHAT YOU PROJECT, ... FROM YOUR LIMITED POINT OF VIEW ! "Everything you say, everything you do, everything you see, everything you feel, is from 'your point of view'. You can only see Truth to the level that you have risen yourself. What you are - is what you see! As long as you're still feeling conditions. Your feelings become hurt. You're able to look at people and judge them. You feel the world pressing in on you. You see others as reality. You have not arrived yet - you're not cooked! When you're Totally Cooked, everything becomes like a movie. You Realize that your body that appears to be a body is also a part of the movie! But you are aware that you have no body. You never had a body! Even when you were not illumined, you were not the body. Only you're able to see that now. IN TRUTH, THE SELF IS ALL THERE IS ! JUST KEEP HOLDING ON TO 'THE SELF' ! "Seeing the world, the Jnani sees The Self which is the Substratum of all that is seen; the ajnani, whether he sees the world or not, is ignorant of his True Being, the Self. Take the instance of moving pictures on the screen in the cinema show. What is there in front of you before the play begins? Merely 'the screen'! On that screen you see the entire show, and for all appearances the pictures are 'real'. But go and try to take hold of them. What do you take hold of? Merely the screen on which the pictures appeared. After the play, when the pictures disappear, what remains? The screen again. So with The Self. That alone exists, the pictures come and go. If you hold on to The Self, you will not be deceived by the appearance of the pictures. Nor does it matter at all if the pictures appear, or disappear. Ignoring The Self; the ajnani thinks the world is real, just as ignoring the screen he sees merely the pictures, as if they existed apart from it. If one knows that without 'The Seer' - there is nothing to be seen; just as there are no pictures without the screen, then one is not deluded. The Jnani knows that the screen - and its pictures, are only The Self. With the pictures The Self is in ITs 'manifest form'; without the pictures IT remains in 'The Unmanifest Form'. To The Jnani it is quite immaterial if The Self is in one form or the other. He is always The Self. But the ajnani - seeing The Jnani active, gets confused ..." ~ Bhagavan ~ (Thank you, Sandra Maa Heber Percy) #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

Troubles arise only when there is a second to oneself. If the Atman be realized to be only unitary, there is no second and therefore no cause for fear. ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi Major Chadwick - I was reminded of Sri Ramakrishna who said that so long as one single desire remained unfulfilled one had to go on being born to fulfil it. He said he himself, once, had wanted to wear a silk cloth and gold ring and sit and smoke a hookah. One day he asked Mathura Nath to obtain these things for him. When he had been given them he sat on the banks of the Ganges (river) dressed in the silk cloth with his gold ring conspicuously on his hand and smoking hookah. Then he told himself, "Now I am dressed in a silk cloth, look at my gold ring, yes, and I am smoking a hookah." He continued for some time enjoying these. After a while he got up, threw his ring into the river, tore off the silk cloth, stamped and spat on it and broke the hookah. He had now fulfilled his desire and he no longer had any wish to do these things again. - A Sadhu's Reminiscences of Ramana Maharshi Sri Ramana Maharshi đŸ™đŸœ đŸȘ·From “Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi”, Talk 227.đŸȘ· As Bhagavan was descending the Hill, one of the workers, just outside the Asramam stopped work and was about to prostrate before the Master. The infinite consciousness alone exists everywhere at all times. What appears to be, is but an appearance. When the appearance is realised as appearance, that which IS, is realised. Either realise that 'I am not and these experiences are not mine' or know that 'I am everything': you will be free from the lure of world-appearance. Ramana Maharshi Existence IS Eternal Awareness đŸȘ· ******************************* 4th January 1937 Visitor : How can the terrible fear of death be overcome? Bhagavan : When does that fear seize you? Does it come when you do not see your body, say, in dreamless sleep, or when you are under chloroform? It haunts you only when you are fully “awake” and perceive the world, including your body. If you do not see these and remain your pure self, as in dreamless sleep, no fear can touch you. If you trace this fear to the object, the loss of which gives rise to it, you will find that that object is not the body, but the mind which functions in it and through which the environment and the attractive world is known as sights, sounds, smells, etc. Many a man would be too glad to be rid of his diseased body and all the problems and inconvenience it creates for him if continued awareness were vouchsafed to him. It is the awareness, the consciousness, and not the body, he fears to lose. Men love existence because it is eternal awareness, which is their own Self. Why not then hold on to the pure awareness right now, while in the body and be free from all fear? - S.S.Cohen, Guru Ramana #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams  #vedanta #life #motivation

The person has come into manifestation for a certain purpose. That purpose will be accomplished whether he considers himself the actor or not. ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi (Talk 643) Eternal Existence Grief exists only so long as one considers oneself to be of a definite form. If the form is transcended, one will know that the one Self is eternal. There is no death nor birth. That which is born is only the body. The body is the creation of the ego. But the ego is not ordinarily perceived without the body. It is always identified with the body. It is the thought which matters. Let the sensible man consider if he knew his body in deep sleep. Why does he feel it in the waking state? But, although the body was not felt in sleep, did not the Self exist then? How was he in deep sleep? How is he when awake? What is the difference? Ego rises up and that is waking. Simultaneously thoughts arise. Let him find out to whom are the thoughts. Where from do they arise? They must spring up from the conscious Self. Apprehending it even vaguely helps the extinction of the ego. Thereafter the realization of the one Infinite Existence becomes possible. In that state there are no individuals other than the Eternal Existence. Hence there is no thought of death or wailing. ~ Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, Talk No. 80 What is your idea of a Guru? You think of him in human shape as a body of certain dimensions, complexion, and so on. A disciple, after Realization once said to his Guru: ‘I now realize that you dwelt in my innermost heart as the one Reality in all my countless births and have now come before me is human shape and lifted this veil of ignorance. What can I do for you in return for such a great benefit?’ And the Guru replied: ‘You need not do anything. It is enough if you remain as you are in your true state. Unless the illusory nature of the perception of the world as an objective reality ceases, the vision of the true nature of the Self, on which the illusion is formed, is not obtained. Ramana Maharishi BECOME THOUGHTLESS IN THE END ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~đŸȘ· On her return to Ramanasramam, Ethel's questions were principally about security and gratification, but a question to Bhagavan on meditation struck her. Q: What is the method for meditation and how can one become thoughtless? Bhagavan: To have only one thought, no matter what, instead of ten thoughts, is the way to become thoughtless in the end. - A Woman's Work, Ethel Merston meeting Bhagavan, p. 174 Q. Where from does the ego rise? A. Soul, mind, ego are mere words. There are no true entities of the kind. Consciousness is the only truth. [Talk 244] From 'Conscious Immortality', ch. 12 YEARNING FOR DARSHAN ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I used to visit Bhagavan regularly when I worked in Madras. On one of my visits I missed the connecting train in Villupuram. I was very disappointed because the next train was not due for many hours. I told the stationmaster, who was a friend of mine, about my problem and he very kindly arranged for me to travel on a goods train that was going through Tiruvannamalai. The train was not due to stop in Tiruvannamalai, but the driver slowed down so I could jump off. Unfortunately, as I was alighting from the train, I fell over and wounded myself. I started to limp towards the ashram, but the path was not clearly visible. I ended up scrambling through some bushes and thorn trees that added to my injuries. I arrived in the ashram in a very disreputable state. When Bhagavan asked me where all my cuts and scratches had come from, I told him what had happened. 'Why all this haste?' he asked. 'In order to see you,' I replied. Bhagavan made all my troubles worthwhile by saying, ‘The yearning for darshan matters more than the darshan itself.'" - Rangan, The Power Of The Presence, part 1, p.38 #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace

If asked, ‘Which of these three is final liberation: With form, without form, or with-and-without-form?’ I say, Liberation is the extinction of the ego which enquires ‘With form, without form, or with-and-without-form?’ ✅ Reality in Forty Verses. Verse 40. Upadesa Saram. Verses 16-23. It is true wisdom For the mind to turn away From outer objects and behold Its own effulgent form. When unceasingly the mind Scans its own form, There is nothing of the kind. For everyone This path direct is open. Thoughts alone make up the mind; And of all thoughts the ‘I’ thought is the root. What is called mind is but the notion ‘I’. When one turns within and searches Whence this ‘I' thought arises, The shamed ‘I’ vanishes And wisdom’s quest begins. Where this ‘I’ notion fades, Now there as I, as I, arises The One, the very Self, The Infinite. Of the term, ‘I’ the permanent import Is ‘That’. For even in deep sleep Where we have no sense of ‘I’ We do not cease to be. Body, senses, mind, breath, sleep — All insentient and unreal — Cannot be ‘I’, ‘I’ who am the Real. For knowing That which Is There is no other knower. Hence Being is Awareness And we are all Awareness. 🕉 The Essence of Instruction. ✅ The Collected Works of Sri Ramana Maharshi #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

THE HEART IS THE SELF - Sri Bhagavan's experience D: How then shall I understand Sri Bhagavan’s statement that the experience of the heart center is at a particular place in the chest? M: Once you accept that from the true and absolute standpoint, the heart as Pure Consciousness is beyond space and time, it will be easy for you to understand the rest in its correct perspective. D: It is only on that basis that I have put the question about the position of the heart. I am asking about Sri Bhagavan’s experience. M: Pure Consciousness wholly unrelated to the physical body and transcending the mind is a matter of direct experience. Sages know their bodiless, eternal Existence just as the layman knows his bodily existence. But the experience of Consciousness can be with bodily awareness as well as without it. In the bodiless experience of Pure Consciousness the Sage is beyond time and space, and no question about the position of the heart can then at all arise. Since, however, the physical body cannot subsist (with life) apart from Consciousness, bodily awareness has to be sustained by Pure Consciousness. The former, by its nature, is limited to and can never be co-extensive with the latter which is infinite and eternal. Body consciousness is merely a monad-like, miniature reflection of the Pure Consciousness with which the Sage has realized his identity. For him, therefore, body consciousness is only a reflected ray, as it were, of the Self-effulgent, Infinite Consciousness which is himself. It is in this sense alone that the Sage is aware of his bodily existence. Since, during the bodiless experience of the heart as Pure Consciousness, the Sage is not at all aware of the body, that absolute experience is localized by him within the limits of the physical body by a sort of feeling-recollection made while he is with bodily awareness. - Maharshi’s Gospel, The Heart is the Self #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality

When you sit quiet and watch yourself, all kinds of things may come to the surface. Do nothing about them, don't react to them; as they have come so will they go, by themselves. All that matters is mindfulness, total awareness of oneself, or rather of one's mind. — Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

So long as consciousness feels the need of anything, you will be compelled to do it. When consciousness leaves, there will be no more bondage. You can never isolate yourself from the consciousness unless consciousness is pleased with you and gets rid of you. Consciousness opens the gate for you to transcend consciousness. There are two aspects: one is conceptual, dynamic consciousness which is full of concepts, and the other is transcendent consciousness. Even the concept "I Am" is not there. Conceptual, qualitative 'Brahman', the one that is full of concepts, is the outcome of the functioning body. This consciousness is dead to me; it is gone. I have transcended that. So whatever is, is that other consciousness, that one which is without concepts. The principle that is conceptual and full of qualities, which I transcended, was like a very big ocean. Now it is mostly dried up, just the dregs remain. Only a very little bit is still there, only a few particles. What is pervading and prevailing is without concept or quality. What remains is talking to you now. Where is the question of birth or death for that remaining principle? You, with your wisdom, are stuck here; you are sticking to certain concepts. If you had no concepts, why should you come here? You study only those concepts which arise from within you. Those concepts which you do not like will not occur to you. You will be involved with only those subjects or matters which you like. Find out the nature of your thoughts. Are they spiritual? I abide in the state where there is no mind. Q: We are told that various Yogic powers arise spontaneously in a man who has realized his own true being. What is your experience in these matters? M: Man’s fivefold body (physical etc.) has potential powers beyond our wildest dreams. Not only is the entire universe reflected in man, but also the power to control the universe is waiting to be used by him. The wise man is not anxious to use such powers, except when the situation calls for them. He finds the abilities and skills of the human personality quite adequate for the business of daily living. Some of the powers can be developed by specialized training, but the man who flaunts such powers is still in bondage. The wise man counts nothing as his own. When at some time and place some miracle is attributed to some person, he will not establish any causal link between events and people, nor will he allow any conclusions to be drawn. All happened as it happened because it had to happen; everything happens as it does, because the universe is as it is. Q: The universe does not seem a happy place to live in. Why is there so much suffering? M: Pain is physical; suffering is mental. Beyond the mind there is no suffering. Pain is merely a signal that the body is in danger and requires attention. Similarly, suffering warns us that the structure of memories and habits, which we call the person (vyakti), is threatened by loss or change. Pain is essential for the survival of the body, but none compels you to suffer. Suffering is due entirely to clinging or resisting; it is a sign of our unwillingness to move on, to flow with life. As a sane life is free of pain, so is a saintly life free from suffering. Q: Nobody has suffered more than saints. M: Did they tell you, or do you say so on your own? The essence of saintliness is total acceptance of the present moment, harmony with things as they happen. A saint does not want things to be different from what they are; he knows that, considering all factors, they are unavoidable. He is friendly with the inevitable and, therefore, does not suffer. Pain he may know, but it does not shatter him. If he can, he does the needful to restore the lost balance — Continues

Whatever has a beginning must have an end. In the timeless all is perfect, here and now. ............... It is the changing that dies. The immutable neither lives nor dies; it is the timeless witness of life and death. You cannot call it dead, for it is aware. Nor can you call it alive, for it does not change. ...................... Emptiness remains, awareness remains, pure light of the conscious being remains. Maharaj: The ‘I am’ makes you step away from the reality. To realize, don't take the body as yourself, no body, no name. Try to just be; that is your true self. At this moment without taking yourself as body and name, can you describe yourself? This body is because of the five elements, the words flow and you say, ‘my mind’, this body and mind are not you, it is because of the five elements and three gunas and Purusha and Prakriti. In all they are ten and with the advent of these ten comes about your beingness, the knowledge that ‘you are’, but you are not these ten. The five elements make up the body while the three gunas make activity possible. When you know that they exist and you are separate from them, then you lose body and mind. Visitor: When there is no body and mind, is one everything? Maharaj: Taking yourself to be the I amness( as an individual entity) is misery, this gone, you are all pervasive and not confined to the body. Visitor: No effort needed to understand? Maharaj: No effort, but because of your tendencies, you cannot remain without making efforts, where is the effort required? You know that ‘you are’. You take food to sustain the body and its activities, that you came to know that ‘you are’ is the misery, but the food cycle goes on, so unknowingly the effort goes on, although you may not want it to. This beingness is because of the five elements, you have no control although you take food ‘to be’. Beingness comes spontaneously and will go spontaneously, yet you protect it and so it continues. How did this beingness appear? This has appeared unknowingly, did you make effort? What are you then? Because of the five elements, you know ‘you are’, without them you are not, so what are you? At the moment, take yourself to be the beingness, don't separate it from the world. You, beingness and the world are one, but you are not the body, you are because of your beingness(Sattva) if it goes, the world goes. Visitor: I have created the world? Maharaj: Yes, unknowingly you have created it, unknowingly and effortlessly will it go, both are simultaneous – with beingness the world is. This beingness itself is the ‘Bhagvan Contd

Watch your thoughts as you watch the street traffic. People come and go: you register without response. With some practice you will find that your mind can function on meny levels at the same time and you can be aware of them all. It is only when you have a vested interest in any particular level, that your attention gets caught in it and you black out on other levels. Even then the work on the blacked out levels goes on, outside the field of consciousness. Do not struggle with your memories and thoughts; try only to include in your field of attention the other, more important questions like, 'Who am I?', 'How did I happen to be born?', 'Whence this universe around me?', 'What is real and what is momentary?', etc. No memory will persist if you lose interest in it; it is the emotional link that perpetuates the bondage. You are always seeking pleasure, avoiding pain, always after happiness and peace. Don't you see that it is your very search for happiness that makes you feel miserable? To seek there is no need; you would not seek what you already have. You yourself are God, the Supreme Reality. To begin with, trust me, trust the Teacher. It enables you to make the first step - and then your trust is justified by your own experience. In every walk of life initial trust is essential; without it little can be done. Every undertaking is an act of faith. Even your daily bread you eat on trust! By remembering what I told you, you will achieve everything. I am telling you again: you are the all-pervading, all-transcending reality. Behave accordingly: think, feel and act in harmony with the whole and the actual experience of what I say will dawn upon you in no time. No effort is needed. Have faith and act on it. Please see that I want nothing from you. It is in your own interest that I speak, because above all, you love your-self, you want yourself secure and happy. Don't be ashamed of it, don't deny it. It is natural and good to love oneself. Only you should know exactly what you love. It is not the body that you love, it is Life - perceiving, feeling, thinking, doing, loving, striving creating - it is that Life you love, which is you, which is all. Continues

The Self is self-effulgent. One need give it no mental picture, anyway. The thought that imagines it is itself bondage, because the Self is the Effulgence transcending darkness and light; one should not think of it with the mind. Such imagination will end in bondage, whereas the Self spontaneously shines as the Absolute. This enquiry into the Self in devotional meditation evolves into the state of absorption of the mind into the Self and leads to Liberation and unqualified Bliss. The great sages have declared that only by the help of this devotional enquiry into the Self can Liberation be attained. Because the ego in the form of the ‘I-thought’ is the root of the tree of illusion, its destruction fells illusion, even as a tree is felled by the cutting of its roots. This easy method of annihilating the ego is alone worthy to be called bhakta (devotion), jnana (knowledge), yoga (union), or dhyana (meditation). ~ Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi’s WORDS OF GRACE. Q: When a truth-seeker earnestly practises his Yogas, does his inner Guru guide and help him or does he leave him to his own resources, just waiting for the outcome? M: All happens by itself. Neither the seeker, nor the Guru do anything. Things happen as they happen; blame or praise are apportioned later, after the sense of doership appearing. Q: How strange! Surely the doer comes before the deed. M: It is the other way round; the deed is a fact, the doer a mere concept. Your very language shows that while the deed is certain, the doer is dubious; shifting responsibility is a game peculiarly human. Considering the endless list of factors required for anything to happen, one can only admit that everything is responsible for everything, however remote. Doership is a myth born from the illusion of ‘me’ and ‘the mine’ Q: How powerful the illusion? M: No doubt, because based on reality. Q: What is real in it? M: Find out, by discerning and rejecting all that is unreal. ~ I AM THAT Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

"The mind will subside only by means of the enquiry 'Who am I?' The thought 'Who am I?', destroying all other thoughts, will itself finally be destroyed like the stick used for stirring the funeral pyre. If other thoughts rise one should, without attempting to complete them, enquire 'To whom did they rise?' What does it matter however many thoughts rise? At the very moment that each thought rises, if one vigilantly enquires 'To whom did this rise?', it will be known 'To me'. If one then enquires 'Who am I?', the mind will turn back to its source [the Self] and the thought which had risen will also subside. By repeatedly practising thus, the power of the mind to abide in its source increases." Questioner: I have so many questions to ask that it is chaotic. Maharaj: Your questions are regarding the concepts of others. Ask questions only regarding yourself. Q: I don't know my Self, how can I reach that point, how can I come to that? M: The fact that you do not know your Self is very appropriate; you are not the body, nor the name of the body, therefore how can you know your Self? Q: How can I experience my Self? M: Is it because of the body that you do not see your Self? Q: Perhaps because "l am". M: I am leading you in that direction. You are; because you are, your world is. You are lost in the names and titles imprinted on that world. Give up the habit of labelling whatever you are. Be what you were prior to the label or title, be that. Q: Is it intuitive, not of the mind? M: Don't employ the mind, do nothing. Q: Should you not be aware? M: That awareness will be there provided you are. You must give up all you have read and heard, and just be. Don't be carried away by concepts. Truth is eternal; whatever you can grasp is unreal. Even your experience that you are is not your true nature. You, as the Absolute, are not this "I Amness", but presently you have to abide in your "I Amness". Q: I feel afraid. M: Because you have assumed something as "I Am", which actually you are not, that is why you are afraid. Suppose you find a diamond ring on the road and you pocket it. Since it is not yours, a fear overcomes you. When you put on an identity that is not yours, you are afraid. When you are the pure "I Amness" only, there is no fear. Presently you are this "I Am", but this "I Am" is not the truth. Whatever you are prior to the appearance of "I Am", that is your true nature. ~ Consciousness and the Absolute The final talks of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj Edited byJean Dunn #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

11. KNOW WHAT ? The continuous process of getting to know the environment goes on from the birth of the “I” consciousness. Though the “I” consciousness is automatic, hence effortless, one has to learn to do various things; one also must learn about one’s own person and its care. Some things are mastered of necessity, and of one’s liking; others which are not essential must also be learnt. In the process of conscious learning, over and above the world of things, we are told we must also learn of the things beyond the world; but before trying to know the things beyond, we must know the controller and support of the universe called God, so that other things may be known with His help. Who is God and how is He to be propitiated? We are told that this is to be achieved by forming friendship with saintly persons and by regularly and devoutly carrying out their instructions; but then, we are told, it is a matter of rare good fortune that one comes across such a saintly soul, and when one comes across such a person, by rare good fortune, the saintly soul tells us, “You yourself are God. Think of Him alone, meditate on His being. Do not engage yourself in thinking of anybody else.” For a while I used to deal with various matters and perform activities such as knowing and learning with the idea that I was a human being, born of the “I” consciousness; next I started meditating on myself as God in order to know myself. Now I know that I am the knower of whatever I remember, perceive, or feel; hence, ignoring all that is remembered, perceived, or felt, I contemplate on the nature of the knower. I am sitting in a secluded place where none can see me, with my eyes half closed. Whatever I remember, perceive, feel or experience comes into being from within myself. My meditation is my torch and what I see is its light, all that I see and remember is just the light of my meditation. Now I do not feel the necessity to meditate anymore, for the nature of meditation is such that it is spontaneous. In its process, it gives rise to innumerable forms and names and qualities....and what have I got to do with it all? Now I am convinced beyond doubt that this meditation Cont'd

THE 'I AM'- ILLNESS, HAS COME UPON MY 'TRUE NATURE' "Whatever the state is when we did not know anything, that is our True State, that is 'Reality'. ... In that state, we did not even know our own existence! Then - Spontaneously, came the message, or thought, or the knowledge: 'I AM'. This knowledge - 'I AM', started the sense of duality - 'subject and object', 'sin and merit', and the entire gamut of 'inter-related opposites'. Whatever was before the knowledge 'I AM,' is Truth; whatever is subsequent to the knowledge, or Consciousness of 'I AM', is false! Understand this basic fact: 'I-AM-ness'; The Sense Of Presence, has been given various laudatory names; like Maya, Prakriti, Ishwara etc., but nevertheless IT is 'an illusion' - 'Pure Ignorance'! So far - in this process, you will have noticed, there is no question of 'an entity'; with an independent existence! You are 'That'; Which is 'prior' to the arrival of 'I-AM-ness'. What has come upon Your True Nature - is like 'an illness', or 'an eclipse', for a certain duration; at the end of which; the physical form will 'die', and will be buried or cremated - and will thereafter, mingle with the five elements, of which it was made." ~ Nisargadatta ~ (Thank you for Sharing, Venkat Ramana) #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #peace #love #bliss #inspiration #healing #satchitananda #meditation #Nisargadatta #nisargadattamaharaj #Ashtavakra #spirituality #Spiritual #robertadams #vedanta #life #motivation

THE FASTEST, AND BEST WAY, TO 'AWAKEN' IN THIS LIFETIME "I give the best - and fastest teaching, to Awaken in this life, and that is Silence: ... 'Absolute Silence'! <-- Even if there is noise going on in your lives - turmoil, bodily dysfunctions, recession; whatever is going on in the world - abide in 'Silence'. True Devotees know this already: They are aware of the world - but this is secondary. They sit in The Silence by themselves, whenever they can. They may sit with the Sage at certain times, but they Realize that The Silence, is the fastest way to Awaken. These devotees are actually the very backbone of every Spiritual organization. So, try to understand this: The fastest and best way to Awaken, is Not Self-Enquiry, is Not Observation, or being 'The Witness'. Those things are for the disciples - or for seekers, but for the devotee the fastest and and best way, is 'The Silence'. Keeping the mind quiet, keeping the mind peaceful. Not fighting the mind! When fighting the mind, it's like beating a cow with a stick, try to take the cow where the mind wants him to go. Looking at the mind in Quietness - without even troubling to change any thought, is like coaxing the cow with some grass, so the cow will follow wherever the 'I' wants him to go. When the 'I' learns to sit in The Silence - in The Quietness, then everything will happen by itself, everything will take care of itself, everything will happen by itself. The idea is not to care or be concerned about thoughts - whatsoever; It does not matter what type of thoughts come into mind - it makes no difference what thoughts come into mind! Do not 'try' to observe them, or be 'The Witness' to them, or try to change them, or even to ask: "To whom do they come?" Merely sit with a smile, and allow what happens, to happen. Allow what is going to happen to take place - without any interference. Just Be Still. So that is the fastest - and best way, to Awaken in this lifetime." ~ Robert Adams ~ #ramana #ramanamaharishi #sriramana #selfenquiry #atmavichara #iamthat #ahambrahmasmi #selfrealization #enlightenment #moksha #nirvana #advaita #nonduality #robertadams
