We hopped in the car and loaded up the Woolly Bear Saturday for a last second trip to see some northern lights. Armed with only our trusty weather and dispersed camping apps we found ourselves a last second spot in Wyoming with the perfect clear sky view for the evening. Our spring break road trip and camping adventure had us heading west! 😁 Our initial spring break plans changed about a week before we left due to weather so we set our sights on someplace warmer which had us heading to the Big Bend area. Due to last minute planning for this trip, accommodations in the parks were already booked. But we found an electric spot at Jackass Flats through hipcamp and it was about 30 min from both the national and state parks. The place is located on a ranch with horses and donkeys in the Chihuahua Desert. It is remote enough that it still provides a dark sky for viewing the brilliant stars at night, which we all loved. This place provided an affordable place to rest our heads and a safe place to keep our tent & trailer during our outings. The RV camp sites were fairly close to each other but we had friendly neighbors on both sides. Our setups kinda showed the evolution of camping... From a ground tent to a rooftop tent on a trailer to an RV. 😅 There is also a store at the entrance of the property called Little Burro Country Store (no gas). The nearest gas station is in Study Butte about 20ish minutes away. Location: Site 16 (RV spot) with electric and water. Bathrooms: There were no bathrooms, only port-a-potties which the girls didn't want to use (they were a little gross), so it gave us a chance to use our instant privacy toilet and tent. Weather: Cold and crisp in the morning then hot as summer in the afternoon. (Low 40s to 90! 🥵) Wildlife observed: Horses 🐎, beetle 🪲 and dogs. Trees: No trees on the campsite. So a shade structure is needed. Very little vegetation so the sites were dusty. Hikes: Not here but we did at the national park. After we completed the off-road course we made a one night stop at the KOA in Bryan to rest our heads for the night. 🏕️ The off-road course was all day and we were too tired to start our trip out west towards Big Bend. From the looks of the grounds (staked trees and bright concrete), this looked like a very new KOA. The girls were excited that this location had a pool but it was too chilly to swim. But they loved the playset! It was very nice. And funny enough we found more red admiral butterflies at our campsite like at the off-road course. Location: Site 902 (RV spot) and it was a back in site so it was towards the back which made it a bit further from the camp store & bathrooms. Bathrooms: Clean and were individual rooms with toilet & shower (required a code). Had cool light up mirrors. Weather: Cold and crisp! Wildlife observed: Some red cardinals 🐦 and admiral butterflies 🦋. Trees: No trees on campsite. New small trees throughout the grounds. So a shade structure is needed. Hikes: Not this time. The girls favorite part: Pretending to take a shower when we all went to brush teeth before bed.
