AUTHORS THAT INSPIRE ME: EPISODE 2 This week's installment: @nghivowriting! I first heard about Nghi Vo in late 2020 when I saw an article about books w/ nonbinary protagonists. The only two books on that list that piqued my interest were two novellas: Vo's The Empress of Salt & Fortune & Becky Chambers' A Psalm for the Wild-Built (spoiler: Becky Chambers will absolutely be getting an installment in this series at some point). When I first read Empress, I did not immediately fall in love, but I thought it was very interesting. It was unlike any fantasy I had previously read & I loved how successfully such a short book executed the slow reveal. By chance, the next book in the series came out in Dec. of that same year & I moseyed around to it by the first week of Jan. This was the book that caught me. Where Empress was an intriguing mind puzzle, When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain leaned hard into a more emotional resonance that was incredibly effective. Higher stakes for the protagonist, a mythological sapphic romance, & talking tigers is what does it for me, apparently. While it is an incredibly close call, I would still put Tiger at the top of my Nghi Vo book ranking list (yes, I have a list). Vo followed up the first two novellas of The Singing Hills Cycle w/ two full length novels - The Chosen & the Beautiful (a Great Gatsby retelling that is infinitely better than the original - though, admittedly, I think the original is dull as hell) & The Siren Queen (I cannot tell you how upset I am that the movie franchise that gives the novel its title is fictional - I want to watch them SO BAD). Then, SURPRISE! She decided to just...keep writing Singing Hills! As of this past Monday, there are 5 novellas in the series w/ 3 more confirmed for future publication. & 2 other novellas not a part of that series. I am very excited. My wallet, not so much. Vo's writing just...hits such a beautiful sweet spot for me. Her work is unique, very queer positive (& just generally delightfully diverse), incredibly engaging, & all around wonderful. You should read her books so we can geek out about them together. Also, I am a sucker for signed copies. Tags in comments.

BOOK REVIEW "The Talented Mr Ripley", Patricia Highsmith My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Goodreads Average Rating: 3.94 This short novel has so many features I enjoy in fiction: an intelligent but morally grey protagonist, an atmospheric setting (in this case, locations across Italy), a long con, and plenty of psychological drama. I also really enjoy the way in which this functions as a crime novel told from the perspective of the criminal, making the reader complicit in desiring the eponymous protagonist to evade justice as he engages in a complex and nail-bitingly precarious game of cat-and-mouse with the other characters. I have to say, however, that I don’t love the book quite as much as Anthony Minghella’s utterly compelling 1999 film adaptation. 2024 Series #25 RIPLEY - ★★★★ (2024) As much as I like the famous 1999 version of The Talented Mr. Ripley, I was never fascinated by it, so I was intrigued to see a new adaptation while also having my doubts about it. Especially considering the miniseries format. But how good it feels when the result dispels your fears and the result is an entertaining and rewarding experience. On the artistic side alone, the decision to film it in black and white and giving it such a slow pace - which I admit can feel too slow at times - is in the interest of satisfying a more focused audience rather than one that is looking for the novelty or just some background noise. I heard that many people were upset with that decision, but I understand that many new generations can't watch anything from the last 60 years and a series that looks and feels that way is not for them, but Ripley enhances its story and gains a voice of its own because of those decisions. And what about Andrew Scott. His performance is fascinating. Many people recognize him for his Moriarty in Sherlock and The Priest in Fleabag, but this will have to be considered one of his best roles in the years to come. While I can agree with the coldness that can be felt in this adaptation, I think that was a very wise choice. Between Ripley's brutality, cynicism, selfishness and nerve, a more slick or romantic style like in the '99 film would have clashed with Andrew Scott's performance. The series is cold because Ripley is depicted that way, but it does not exemplify a coldness that is intended to repel the audience, but rather embodies the empty and stolen life experience of its protagonist. Since the day it was released on Netflix I've heard very little about this series from the audience, and currently all the attention is being stolen by Baby Reindeer, but I sincerely recommend this show. Ripley was all about doppelgängers and doubling, so we whipped up a layered drink that we’re calling the Tom Dick and Margie. We started w a base layer of crème de cassis (for the darkness underneath), a homemade apple-cello layer* and a limoncello layer (the doppelgängers), and then in honor of all those martinis they drank, we topped it off w a thin pour of gin! To get the layering, pour each liqueur slowly over the back of a spoon ending with the gin. Siempre que encuentro unos de sus ejemplares sé que será una buena opción. * Tom Ripley vive tranquilamente junto con su mujer en París de forma lujosa y alejado en parte de su pasado hasta que un antiguo socio americano le propone cometer un par de crímenes recibiendo a cambio una cuantiosa recompensa. El mismo Ripley no quiere verse involucrado en ningún asesinato, para no volver al foco del mundo criminal, por lo que mediante el chantaje propone que haga este trabajo un conocido suyo el cual le ofendió unos meses antes. Este conocido engañado por los diferentes amigos de Ripley se verá inmerso en un juego de asesinatos donde también interviene la mafia y que le será difícil salir victorioso. * Se trata de la tercera parte de la serie dedicada al personaje de Tom Ripley, el cual leí su primera novela “El Talento de Mr. Ripley” (Post Nº 58) que me fascinó y se convirtió en uno de mis libros favoritos del género. * Como es habitual en los libros de la autora, consigue que te adentres en la mente de los personajes y hacerte sentir casi sus mismos sentimientos, por lo que como ya consiguió con su anterior libro, acabas odiando sobremanera a Ripley pero a veces también acabas pensando como él. * Actualmente se ha puesto de moda la serie sobre este personaje que ha producido Netflix y está teniendo muy buena acogida. Sinceramente, también sé que hay pelis dedicadas a Ripley, pero creo que es muy difícil profundizar tanto en su psique como lo hacen los libros. NOTA: 7

The @netflix series adaptation of #thetalentedmrripley is stacked when it comes to to talent both in front of and behind the camera. Andrew Scott shines and mesmerizes as the titular #ripley fully engaging and captivating the audience. The supporting cast is no less harrowing nor entertaining, especially Dakota Fanning as Marge, a nearly perfect foil and obstacle to Scott's Thomas Ripley. Furthermore, the set design and music show a unique vision that is enhanced by the choice to have the series be in Black & White. Honestly, the one factor against it is its runtime as a series. There is just frankly too much time spent with these characters and story that hinders several character choices and developments. This is one of the rare cases where more does not equate to more as both film adaptations do a better job in presenting the narrative with the same sense of dread and anxiety and no lulls or downturns that this series ends up having. 3/5🖼 #review #netflix #adaptation #television #televisionseries #miniseries #thriller #crimeshow

Ripley är en mycket sevärd thrillerserie på Netflix. Tempot är långsamt och säkert för långsamt för vissa. När jag kom in i det lugna tempot och vant mig vid att allt är i svartvitt har jag svårt att sluta titta. Det är riktigt bra och det är såå vackert foto. Trappor, skulpturer, små detaljer, utsikter, ja varje sekvens är som en tavla (i vissa lägen mycket skrämmande motiv). Tom Ripley är en skapelse av Patricia Highsmith. Jag har inte läst boken men har nu, efter att ha sett serien Ripley, tittat på filmen The talented Mr Ripley med Matt Damon i huvudrollen. CURRENTLY WATCHING: “Ripley” on Netflix @ripleynetflix 🖤 Let me start by saying, this series is excellent and if you haven’t watched it you should do so immediately. I was instantly captivated and binged all 8 episodes in a few nights. To be honest, I wasn’t originally excited to watch this series because I love the 1999 movie “The Talented Mr. Ripley” with Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow. How could anything top that? Fortunately, @jessnellgraves wrote about this series in her Substack recently, and she convinced me to tune in. Here’s the thing: The movie and the Netflix series portray the same story, based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 book, but they’re VERY different. While the movie was awash in sunny gelato hues, this series is dark, mysterious, and a little spooky. It’s filmed all in black and white which lends to the darker undertones and gives it a classic, film noir vibe. “Ripley” also expands on the story in the movie, so although I was familiar with the narrative, the series still manages to be incredibly suspenseful and feels fresh. The acting is fantastic too: Andrew Scott is spelling-binding as Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn is a perfect Dickie Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning gives Gwyneth a run for her money as a more stoic, suss Marge Sherwood. I also loved Eliot Sumner’s portrayal of Dickie’s snobby friend, Freddie Miles, and John Malkovich’s cameo as a Château Margaux-sipping “art dealer.” This stylish series is chock-full of eye candy, from the stunning, wanderlust-inducing Italian scenery to the characters’ gorgeous dwellings and quiet luxury wardrobes. I’m coveting Dickie’s Hermes typewriter and Ferragamo loafers, as well as Tom’s crystal ashtrays, all of which play prominent roles in the story. (Oh, and that Picasso, of course.) I can’t recommend this series enough. I’m already itching to rewatch it (along with the OG movie). Who else has seen it?? 👀
