Ripley E05: „Lucio“. Tom gefällt es sowohl in Rom als auch in seiner neuen Rolle als Dickie sehr. Er findet ein wunderschönes, gut gelegenes Apartment, das er gleich für 2 Monate im Voraus bezahlt, und er mag es, Marge weiterhin mit Briefen hinters Licht zu führen. Auch beginnt er zu malen. Dass dann Freddie auftaucht und misstrauische Fragen stellt, macht die Sache unnötig kompliziert. Als sich die Angelegenheit hochschaukelt und Freddie droht, die Polizei einzuschalten, sieht Tom sich ein weiteres Mal zum Äußersten genötigt. Dieses Mal ist es schwieriger, die Leiche loszuwerden. Auch wenn Tom sich unerwartet gezwungen sah zu handeln, geht er doch wieder sehr gründlich und durchdacht vor, und ist beinahe die ganze Nacht damit beschäftigt, seine Spuren vollständig zu beseitigen. CURRENTLY WATCHING: “Ripley” on Netflix @ripleynetflix 🖤 Let me start by saying, this series is excellent and if you haven’t watched it you should do so immediately. I was instantly captivated and binged all 8 episodes in a few nights. To be honest, I wasn’t originally excited to watch this series because I love the 1999 movie “The Talented Mr. Ripley” with Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow. How could anything top that? Fortunately, @jessnellgraves wrote about this series in her Substack recently, and she convinced me to tune in. Here’s the thing: The movie and the Netflix series portray the same story, based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 book, but they’re VERY different. While the movie was awash in sunny gelato hues, this series is dark, mysterious, and a little spooky. It’s filmed all in black and white which lends to the darker undertones and gives it a classic, film noir vibe. “Ripley” also expands on the story in the movie, so although I was familiar with the narrative, the series still manages to be incredibly suspenseful and feels fresh. The acting is fantastic too: Andrew Scott is spelling-binding as Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn is a perfect Dickie Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning gives Gwyneth a run for her money as a more stoic, suss Marge Sherwood. I also loved Eliot Sumner’s portrayal of Dickie’s snobby friend, Freddie Miles, and John Malkovich’s cameo as a Château Margaux-sipping “art dealer.” This stylish series is chock-full of eye candy, from the stunning, wanderlust-inducing Italian scenery to the characters’ gorgeous dwellings and quiet luxury wardrobes. I’m coveting Dickie’s Hermes typewriter and Ferragamo loafers, as well as Tom’s crystal ashtrays, all of which play prominent roles in the story. (Oh, and that Picasso, of course.) I can’t recommend this series enough. I’m already itching to rewatch it (along with the OG movie). Who else has seen it?? 👀

TV REVIEW: 6.2/10 “TOO SLOW TO RIP-LEY THROUGH THIS SHOW” We know Joe Goldberg of You and Oliver Quick of Saltburn, but we now are getting a series about one of the most notorious fictional con artists, Tom Ripley. Ripley gets hired by a wealthy man to convince his vagabond son to return home from Italy. In order to get the life he wants, Tom Ripley must spin an elaborate web of lies and outrun the truth. The truth comes in many forms in this show, one being the thorn in Ripley’s side, Marge, played by Dakota Fanning. She’s onto his every move and questions his lies, but Ripley is too prepared, having rehearsed every conversation before it happens. Keep in mind this is in black and white and is told in a neo-noir style, personally we did not find this to be a bingeable show. We found the episodes to drag on a bit, especially when murder cover ups were taking place, this showed you every excruciating detail as if you were there with him. So there is a divide in our house….. I’m loving the Netflix version of The Talented Mr Ripley. The cinematography, the film noir, Hitchcock tones. It’s sophisticated and elegant. It gets under your skin. The Brilliant actors, amazing scenery are all incredible. Granted it’s a slow burn but in my opinion it’s worth it. Now my husband, however, does not understand my excitement at this fabulous series, that said, he does intend to see it through so it can’t be all bad. Highsmith schafft in „Der talentierte Mr. Ripley“ eine Welt, in der man nie sicher sein kann, was als Nächstes passiert. Tom Ripley’s moralischer Abstieg ist irgendwie beängstigend, aber auch fesselnd. Der Roman bringt einen dazu, über moralische Grenzen und die dunklen Seiten in uns selbst nachzudenken. Übrigens: Die beste Adaption ist in meinen Augen die Netflix-Serie „Ripley“ mit Andrew Scott. Seine Verkörperung ist düsterer als im Roman beschrieben. Das Drehbuch von Steven Zaillian, der 1994 den Oscar für das beste adaptierte Drehbuch“ für Schindlers Liste bekam, ist in meinen Augen schon fast gelungener als die Romanvorlage. A warm welcome to all the new followers!! I guess it's because of Ripley 👀 Let' talk about it and especially about Dickie-Tom relationship. What's your take on it? I've read the book and I liked how they showed Dickie potentially more into Tom than I envisioned his character. In the past I only saw Tom obsessed with him, but not Dickie. Dickie was for me only "using" Tom for amusement, and when the problems surpassed the amusement he wasn't interested anymore. In this adaptation, I think Dickie was very fond of Tom, and didn't want to ask him to leave but it was more a necessity because of external factors (Marge, his father) and because he was afraid of the closeness of the relationship with him, and the meaning behind this closeness. Steven Zaillian joins forces with Andrew Scott as our beloved Tom Ripley and introduces an 8 episode mini series produced by Netflix. . . Ripley follows Tom Ripley, a low-key grifter who gets hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to convince his son, Richard Greenleaf, to return to New York. However, Ripley in Italy improvises and is inspired by another idea. . . Tom Ripley is presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity - a fully funded trip to Italy in exchange for a task that seems easier than it actually is. He hardly remembers who Richard Greenleaf is or cares about his well-being but he’s up to the task. When Tom lands in the gorgeous city of Atrani, he understands exactly why Richard never wants to go back to America, cause let’s be real, who would? Astonished by Richard’s carefree lifestyle, the pretty girlfriend and the money he’s got, Ripley plots a different path for his acquaintance now friend but is there ever a perfect master plan? The 8 episodes are beautifully shot in black and white, an interesting choice by Zaillian but Robert Elswit’s cinematography does not disappoint. Italy remains as stunning as ever even in the absence of colour. Now Ripley’s lies and misconduct grow and intensify the general mood by the minute - it’s gripping, tense, daring and cold blooded. I have to especially mention episode 5 that exhausted me in the best way possible and I now consider one of the best TV episodes of all time. The downside of it all though is that past episode 5, the storytelling becomes rather slow and somewhat redundant. The eight episode structure is a long stretch and this could’ve easily been reduced to six. With so much charisma and style, Andrew Scott plays Ripley incredibly well and delivers a terrific performance (I would take him over Matt Damon as Ripley any day). Emmy nomination incoming no doubt. I especially loved Maurizio Lombardi’s serious performance with an underlying humorous touch. . . I quite enjoyed Ripley and I hope you do too. It’s available on @netflix worldwide.

The Next Episode #4📺 Avec « Ripley », nouvelle adaptation du fascinant roman de Patricia Highsmith, après celles de René Clément (Plein Soleil, 1959) et d’Anthony Minghella (The Talented Mr. Ripley, 1999), Steven Zaillian signe l’une des meilleures mini-séries que l’on ait vu depuis des lustres…sans doute depuis « The Night Of » (2016) qu’il avait co-écrite et co-réalisée. À la différence de l’excellent thriller de Minghella et son esthétique papier-glacé, Zaillian revient aux sources du film noir, avec un rythme plus lent, une atmosphère lourde et une attention aux détails presque monomaniaque. L’exquise composition des plans, le montage à la serpe ainsi qu’une photo noir-blanc à tomber de Robert Elswit concourent à faire ressortir l’aspect machiavélique du récit et la complexité tortueuse du personnage de Tom Ripley. Il y a dans ces huit épisodes un sens du cinéma que l’on ne trouve plus dans la production télévisée actuelle et Dieu que cela fait du bien. En témoignent notamment deux longues séquences de meurtre où Ripley éprouve toutes les peines du monde à couvrir les traces de ses méfaits, des morceaux de bravoure qui évoquent immédiatement les mises en scène élaborées de Hitchcock. « Ripley » frappe par son approche réfléchie et subtile, illustrant à merveille l’adage « Less is More », à l’image de l’interprétation parfaite de l’ensemble des comédiens, emmenés par un Andrew Scott énigmatique à souhait. The camera absorbs Andrew’s tiniest moments and flickers of madness like a sponge and it’s a sight to see. Episode 5 in particular is a masterclass in tension building and actors flirting with subtext in a scene. My hands felt like they’d taken a shower. Throughout the show, I’ve never seen this much detail go into cleaning up a murder (I won’t say whose) - the fatigue, the adrenaline, the methodical disposal, everything that can go wrong for a newbie, etc. It’s so disturbing yet comical 4. The Best B&W Cinematography You’ve Ever Seen: While I do wish at least parts of the show weren’t black and white because the cinematography captures Italy out of all places, the stylistic decision to keep the entire visual palate of the show in black and white works very well. It’s an aesthetic masterpiece.

Piękni młodzi ludzie, piękne Włochy, piękne kłamstewka - sukces murowany. Tom Ripley pokazuje, że kłamstwo ma całkiem długie nogi. Gdy pojawia się możliwość podróży do Włoch, by sprowadzić do domu syna potentata statkowego - nie marnuje tej okazji. Misternie tka swój plan na zmianę statusu społecznego, i wykorzystania pozycji rodziny Greenleaf. Film pełen niepokoju, który kontrastuje z pięknymi włoskimi widokami. Twarze na ekranie też piękne, młodziutcy Matt Damon, Jude Law i Gwyneth Paltrow. Byłam szczerze zaskoczona obecnością Cate Blanchett, jakoś do tej pory zupełnie mi umknęło, że ona też odgrywa tam mniejszą, choć kluczową rolę w tej całej układance. A Philip Seymour Hoffman dopełnia tą fantastyczną piątkę. Postać Ripleya jako niezwykle inteligentnego, obsesyjnego, manipulacyjnego kłamcy jest fantastyczna. Matt Damon pokazał, że Ripley jest faktycznie “utalentowany.” Jestem bardzo ciekawa czy Ripley Andrew Scotta również będzie miał w sobie to coś, choć znając inne wspaniałe kreacje Scotta - raczej nie mam wątpliwości.
