♡ 𝓙𝓮𝓷𝓷𝓲𝓯𝓮𝓻 & 𝓡𝓸𝓫𝓮𝓻𝓽 ♡ •Jennifer Jones and her first husband, Robert Walker, are photographed with their two children at home in New York, 1944. ❤️ In 1937, Jones began studying at the American Academy for Dramatic Arts in New York City where she was introduced to Robert Walker, an up and coming actor who she instantly took a liking too. The two courted for a few months before getting engaged and on January 2, 1939, the couple eloped at a local courthouse. In 1940 the couple welcomed their first child, Robert Jr., and one year later on March 17, 1941, they welcomed a second child who they named Michael. In 1943, Jennifer began work on, “The Song of Bernadette,” a biographical film which became a standout success, leading to an Oscar win the following year. In contrast, Walker’s career was not doing as well and this led Jones to approach producer David O. Selznick about giving him a role in her next picture, “Since You Went Away.” Selznick agreed however this plan backfired when he and Jones began an affair during production, leading to Jennifer separating from Walker soon after. In 1945, Jones officially divorced Walker and went on to make two more films with Selznick before they married in 1949, welcoming a daughter five years later. Following the divorce, Walker went on to marry John Ford’s daughter, Barbara, however when that marriage ended after only a few months, he wed his final wife, Hanna Hertelendy in 1949. The couple remained married for three years before Walker’s tragic death in 1951 following an accidental combined drug and alcohol intoxication. He was only thirty-two. Jones went on to stay with Selznick until his death in 1965 and following his passing, she married once more before passing away in 2009 at the age of 90. Sadly, all three of her children have also passed away.

This is my second “accidental” book that was sent to me in error a few months ago, and I’m so glad it was. It was the perfect little thriller with an awesome story. The different storylines had me hooked from the beginning and I had to keep reading to answer the multitude of questions that kept popping into my brain. Reading about the unthinkable is never easy. The author wrote characters that had experienced great loss in a tasteful way that wasn’t insensitive or making a mockery of those unfortunate situations. It was hard not to relate to the women in this story and think of what my life would be like after suffering that kind of loss. You almost can’t blame them for wanting revenge. Semi broke out in March until I got pulled back in and April was a non-starter, bar some very short audiobooks. But I think I found the book that pulled me out of it. KILL FOR ME KILL FOR YOU takes inspiration from Strangers on a Train, one of my favourite movies - two strangers meet, share stories about the people in their lives they want to kill and end up swapping murders. But this book was so twisty, it didn't get boring or predictable, and I audibly gasped at one of the big reveals. I can't recall anything I didn't like in this story. I highly recommend this one if you want to break out of a slump. Been watching a lot of Hitchcock and of course, the Netflix Ripley, which I think was partially inspired by film noir (and another Highsmith), and realised I have four of the books he adapted. Of course, two of them are Daphne du Maurier! Marnie is a strange one, a really interesting character and premise but ultimately of its time and quite misogynist. As a fan of Kate Carlisle’s Bibliophile series, I was thrilled about the crossover with Brooklyn Wainwright cameoing. There are also themes of suspense to parallel the Alfred Hitchcock/ Strangers on a Train connection in the plot. Finally, I loved the closed circle/train aspect of the murder! With the release of “Challengers” last week, there has been a lot of discussion about tennis themed movies. On Instagram @balanced_tennis is currently grading tennis films and @tennisyellow has recently reviewed Challengers. I have not seen Challengers and never heard of Zendaya until this film’s trailers appeared on Tennis Channel. What I can say about Challengers is that it’s a fictional portrayal of pro tennis with naughty bits; a Hollywood formula which has historical precedent. As a tennis historian, I shall now offer an overview about the history of tennis themed movies. The first film about tennis was titled “The Art Of Tennis And How To Play It” by Britain’s Parkstone Film Company in 1924. It was a silent film distributed to cinemas and showcased specific strokes as demonstrated by Joan Austin (Bunny’s sister) as well as her doubles partner Evelyn Colyer and Davis Cup player Patrick Wheatley. Hollywood’s first tennis movie was a talkie love triangle comedy in 1930 called “Crazy That Way” starring Joan Bennett. Unfortunately this is classified as a “lost film” and we can’t enjoy it. In October 1946 a Hollywood gossip columnist named Erskine Johnson mentioned a potential film about Alice Marble, who would possibly be portrayed by actress Ginger Rogers. That same column also had an unrelated blurb about director Ida Lupino. The Alice Marble movie never materialized, but in 1951 Ida Lupino directed a fictional tennis movie called “Hard, Fast and Beautiful”. It’s the story of a chain smoking mother and pipe smoking father whose daughter, Florence, is a tennis prodigy who got started by hitting balls off her home’s garage door. Actress Sally Forrest was cast as Florence Farley and was advised on tennis strokes by Eleanor Tennant, Alice Marble’s former coach. Also in 1951 was the release of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense film involving a tennis player who meets a psychopath as two “Strangers On A Train”. The Patricia Highsmith novel on which the film was based actually featured an architect instead of a tennis player, so this almost was not going to be a tennis movie. I sit on a lot of trains. This weekend I headed to Cambridge and took my booklets for a workshop on #Bute with me to sew. And then two lovely ladies sat down. They were from Australia and researching their family stories. Those who know me well will not be surprised to hear that we struck up a conversation and spent the journey nattering away. 🦋Emily’s Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I have been a Hitchcock fan because my dad had me watch all the movies as a kid. Strangers on a Train is one of my all time favorites and this book had a lot of those qualities. I will say when I first started reading this book, I left thought I was reading an episode of Law and Order: SVU. Which if you know me I love Olivia Benson. This book is written from the perspective of four different people. At times I like that type of book but I felt like it was a little too much. I thought there was a little too much fluff where some of the chapters could have been condensed down a bit. However, this book did have short chapters which I’m a big fan of. With multiple perspectives I did have the thought that this book was a split timeline and that the characters I was reading from are most likely unreliable. I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read it but who doesn’t like an unreliable narrator? Let’s makes the book more interesting. Throughout the book you’re waiting to see what happens next with the pact, and then the question of WHO is Mr. Blue Eyes. The ending of this book still left an air of mystery and leaving me thinking WHAT just happened and questions for the unforeseen future. This was a quick read and I kept turning the pages to find out what was going to happen, which is always a great quality for a mystery/thriller, however, I wish there was a little more too this one. Summary: Two women meet by chance. Both reeling after traumas from their families being torn apart. Both wanting revenge upon the men who did it. They come up with a plan, Kill for me, I’ll kill for you. In another area of the city, Ruth is attacked in her home by a man with piercing blue eyes who disappears into the night. Throw Momma From The Train- Larry Donner is a writer with a severe case of writer’s block due to the hatred he feels for ex-wife Margaret because she took his last novel and received all the praise for it. He’s now teaching writing at a community college where he meets a student, Owen. Owen lives with his overbearing domineering mother that verbal abuses him and fears he’s going to send her to retirement home. He also has daydreams of killing his mother but lacks the conviction to carry it out. Owen and Larry become friendly and after Larry tells Owen to see Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” for inspiration in his writing, Owen come up with the idea to kill Margaret and have Larry kill his mother for him, giving them perfect alibis.
