A subtle toxic tennis story that serves up enough to make this an interesting match. This movie has an equivalent of ups and downs. The stories pacing is very interesting as the time frames shift back and forth which gave it a decent ending. Showed the competitiveness of the sport but also the personal drama side of it with career and desires. The cast were great but Zendaya was the highlight of the movie as she gave off a lot toxic energy they was frustrating in the best way. The movie also had great cinematography but can’t speak the same for the music score The 80s Eurobeat soundtrack was consistently playing almost over every scene with the ad on of too much slow motion scenes. That and the back and forth time jumps was too repetitive that drags on the story for too long. challengers • A @challengersmovie 👀 in theaters 🎾 how fitting that this movie that centers around tennis served (ha) as the tiebreaker (haha) in my feelings towards challengers’ director luca guadagnino! he has simultaneously directed one of my favorite movies (call me by your name) and one of my least favorite movies (bones and all) in recent years, but challengers tips the scales in his favor because what a fascinating movie this was - well worth the wait! 🎾 this movie is not at all about threesomes and love triangles like the trailer leads the audience to believe. it’s all about tennis, literally and figuratively, and each individual’s relationship to tennis, serving as a mirror for how they move through the world and their relationships to others. I loved how individually motivated and messed up all these different characters were - SO well written. our three leads all amazingly brought to life their respective characters! so many mind games and power moves, it was thrilling to watch all the complex social dynamics unravel throughout the movie 🎾 I think this is the best tennis movie I’ve ever seen! it captures the intensity and excitement I always feel whenever I’m playing or watching tennis - STRONG sound effects, INTENSE soundtrack to raise your blood pressure, and SO many great shots of the ball whizzing by the camera so closely, I flinched multiple times thinking I was about to get hit! 😅 how immersive! 🎾 I will say that during the final match, luca had a little bit too much dip on his chip because we switched between like 100 different pov shots - a nice birds eye view of the match, audience pov, then player pov, then some awkward go pro-looking racquet pov, then suddenly the court was transparent and we were looking up from below the court at them playing, and then TENNIS BALL POV. we literally became the tennis ball, flying back and forth and spinning every which way 🙃 it kept on escalating and just when I thought there weren’t any other possible povs to explore, luca would prove me wrong 🎾 #challengers #tennis #tennismovie #zendaya #lucaguadagnino #mikefaist #joshoconnor #moviereview #sitv #screeningintothevoid

Challengers 9/10 I’m pretty sure I burned calories watching all these games in stress!!! I don’t know if I can call “Challengers” a sports film because it’s much more than that thanks to its very mature script and terrific execution!! When I use the term “Immersive” to describe a film, it’s usually sci-fi adventures like “Avatar” or “Dune” but this one was able to grab my attention and build this very unique tension since its opening scene in a very odd way!! Luca Guadagnino used so many different techniques in each and every sequence and the result should’ve been chaotic but luckily the director knew exactly what he wanted to present and all these decisions paid off especially in the climax that felt like a roller coaster of emotions and thrills!! The nonlinear narrative was a genius choice that added a whole new dimension to the plot and served as the fuel to the uncanny excitement that was felt during the last few scenes!!! Credits should be also given to the three main cast members who delivered very strong performances but of course Zendaya was the center of attention in all her scenes!! Today’s movie is Challengers - Despite its beautiful cinematography and impressive soundtrack, the film struggles to make a lasting impact due to its slow pace and confusing storyline. The direction and editing are particularly weak, making it hard for viewers to follow the plot or connect with the characters. While the soundtrack by Trent Reznor is excellent and adds depth to the film, it isn’t enough to make up for the overall lack of clarity. MY TAKE ON TENNIS FILMS, Part 2 In 1979 we begin to see the Hollywood formula for tennis movies become apparent through the making of naughty “rom-com” (romantic comedies) with tennis themes just as the sport increased in popularity. “Racquet” was released in June 1979. It featured actor and game show host Bert Convy as fictional tennis pro Tommy Everett at a California country club owned by Bobby Riggs. Björn Borg makes an appearance at the end of the film as Everett’s opponent at an exhibition match. The first part of the film has plenty of naughty bits, so it’s not recommended for children. Also in 1979 was the release of “Players” starring Ali MacGraw and the son of Dean Martin. Dean Paul “Dino” Martin was actually a real tennis player who in 1978 played in the qualifying draw at Wimbledon. He got the role of “Chris Christensen” over Vincent Van Patten, another actor who once played pro tennis and actually beat Dino Martin on the courts. Guillermo Vilas appears throughout the movie as the Wimbledon opponent. Another pro tennis player who starred in a fictional film was Canadian Carling Bassett. She was actually the lead in a 1982 film that was somehow titled “Spring Fever” but was all about the national junior tennis championship in Florida. Film critic Roger Ebert gave this movie 1.5 stars because the naughty movie poster picture does not appear in any scene of the film! The tennis comedy continued in 1990 with “Nobody’s Perfect”, which stars actor Rob Lowe’s little brother Chad as a small college tennis player who is persuaded by his buddy to wear a wig and women’s clothing in pursuit of a young lady on the women’s team. Vitas Gerulaitis makes an appearance at the start of the film as the men’s team coach, but in the final credits his name is misspelled as “Geruliatis” Finally there’s the popular movie “Wimbledon” in 2004 starring Kirsten Dunst and Britain’s Paul Bettany. Once again the romantic comedy theme helped make it gross 7.1 million dollars in just its opening weekend at the North American box office. For tennis movies, I prefer accurate portrayals of real tennis legends, such as “King Richard”. I dislike rom-coms. #tennismovie
With the release of “Challengers” last week, there has been a lot of discussion about tennis themed movies. On Instagram @balanced_tennis is currently grading tennis films and @tennisyellow has recently reviewed Challengers. I have not seen Challengers and never heard of Zendaya until this film’s trailers appeared on Tennis Channel. What I can say about Challengers is that it’s a fictional portrayal of pro tennis with naughty bits; a Hollywood formula which has historical precedent. As a tennis historian, I shall now offer an overview about the history of tennis themed movies. The first film about tennis was titled “The Art Of Tennis And How To Play It” by Britain’s Parkstone Film Company in 1924. It was a silent film distributed to cinemas and showcased specific strokes as demonstrated by Joan Austin (Bunny’s sister) as well as her doubles partner Evelyn Colyer and Davis Cup player Patrick Wheatley. Hollywood’s first tennis movie was a talkie love triangle comedy in 1930 called “Crazy That Way” starring Joan Bennett. Unfortunately this is classified as a “lost film” and we can’t enjoy it. In October 1946 a Hollywood gossip columnist named Erskine Johnson mentioned a potential film about Alice Marble, who would possibly be portrayed by actress Ginger Rogers. That same column also had an unrelated blurb about director Ida Lupino. The Alice Marble movie never materialized, but in 1951 Ida Lupino directed a fictional tennis movie called “Hard, Fast and Beautiful”. It’s the story of a chain smoking mother and pipe smoking father whose daughter, Florence, is a tennis prodigy who got started by hitting balls off her home’s garage door. Actress Sally Forrest was cast as Florence Farley and was advised on tennis strokes by Eleanor Tennant, Alice Marble’s former coach. Also in 1951 was the release of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense film involving a tennis player who meets a psychopath as two “Strangers On A Train”. The Patricia Highsmith novel on which the film was based actually featured an architect instead of a tennis player, so this almost was not going to be a tennis movie. Challengers is a movie that I recall seeing the trailer for last year and pretty much having no interest in. I had not seen any of Guadagnino’s movies (still haven’t other than this) and I don’t really seek out love triangle movies either. I didn’t mind that it looked like a tennis movie. I’ll watch a sports movie if it looks good. I totally suck at tennis though. It’s a sport I wish I could have been better at in high school. Anyway, I got a bit more excited the closer to release we got. Not sure why. So I treated myself out this week on a sunny day to a sports movie called Challengers and it ended up being very appropriate. I thankfully ended up really liking the movie too. I can see why people like tennis. There’s something very fun but also very tiring, sweaty and personal about it. It makes sense for a movie about a love triangle taking centered around tennis. And these people love their tennis, maybe more than they love each other. They mention on a handful of occasions how they “only talk about tennis” even when they’re so obviously not. Tashi wants to see some amazing tennis, Art wants Tashi, and Patrick kind of wants both? They’re conflicting people in a conflicting situation and I found myself having a hard time rooting for any of them. Even when I started to sort of side with one of them, they’d do something kind of despicable or just downright awful. It’s the kind of drama you can’t look away from though, and I don’t mind a movie with detestable characters. I don’t have to ~like~ anyone to be having a good time. I actually watched it in IMAX just out of sheer curiosity. I don’t know that you’d necessarily be missing out if you just watch it in standard digital, but I will say that the soundtrack and sound design is very tight. . Challengers (2024) Directed by Luca Guadagnino Watched: 29/04/2024 Rating: 8/10 Challengers is ambitious and goes to some strange places throughout, and most of its big swings pay off. It’s about three people who are all involved with tennis, and the complex friendships/relationships between the trio. It takes place over an extended period of time and tells its story in a non-chronological way that’s always surprisingly easy to follow. It looks fantastic, too, and the score - while sometimes a bit much - is memorable. I love how cinematic tennis looks here. In a way, it reminded me of Tokyo Olympiad, which is an artistic and beautiful documentary film about the 1964 Olympic Games. I’m not usually crazy about watching sports, but that documentary and Challengers both find ways to make sports look unique and far more dramatic than any ordinary broadcast. Like the score, the visuals of Challengers sometimes feel like a bit much (some of the slow motion is slooooooow), but it gives the film a unique voice, which is appreciated. Speaking of slow, that’s my main complaint - I wish Challengers was a little shorter, because there were some patience-testing scenes. The slow-burn feel doesn’t work as well for this story as it’s worked for some other Luca Guadagnino films in the past, but many sequences here soar nonetheless. It’s visually inventive and the acting from the three leads is top-notch. I had eagerly been waiting for the movie Challengers to finally be released and today it opened in theaters. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, known for Call Me by Your Name, Challengers features actress Zendaya as a fiercely competitive tennis prodigy involved in a love triangle. There is tension throughout the movie, and the extraordinary techno soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross only adds to that. This is not a clichéd sports story meant to be inspirational, but rather a tale of ambition and backstabbing. There was plenty of product placement throughout the movie, but, if anything, it made the scenes feel more realistic.
