THE GOOD STUFF THE BIG 3- This is a 2-hour and 10-minute movie that is largely a movie between three characters. Zendaya, MIke FaIst, and Josh O’Connor carry the film easily, they are given a lot to do and these characters are very well-written. Their performances are all extraordinary. I went into this kind of thinking that it was going to be a movie that was made to showcase Zendaya specifically by design… but it’s not quite that way. I love Luca Guadagnino and this hasn’t changed anything. Was it my favorite of his films? No. Was it still great? Absolutely. The real star of this film is the cast. Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor are all stellar. They do a great job really diving into each era of their relationships and how they have changed as people throughout the full story. Guadagnino does a great job bringing out their full emotions and making the story feel coherent even though it does jump around the timeline a bit. The ending was the only major moment of disappoint for me. Was it a fine conclusion the story, sure. I just didn’t love it and wanted a more realistic and concrete finale. It didn’t bring down the film too much though. I don’t think everyone can or will enjoy this. There’s not a lot of action, but the writing is very engaging and does feel solidly paced. But if you don’t or won’t watch a 2+ hour long drama and be entertained, don’t rush to watch this at all.

I am a big tennis fan, so movies about tennis, no matter how dodgy they may seem, pique my my interest. This, of course, did more than that, because of its exciting director, Luca Guadagnino, and a trio of fun stars, leading with one of my up-and-coming favourites, Josh O'Connor, alongside Zendaya and Mike Faist. The trailer suggests a playful love-triangle situation, but the movie plays out in unexpected ways, with a focus that isn't always very sharp. It's in these areas of ambiguity that the movie is both interesting and frustrating, because it's not very obvious what you should feel towards this trio of characters. They are all burdened with privilege, agendas and cravings, in different ways. While I was thoroughly engaged and entertained by the rhythmic scenes, ridiculous tennis and Trent Reznor's soundtrack, the love triangle had a strange preformative veneer to it that didn't really feel true. “Challengers”. Il nuovo film di Luca Guadagnino è davvero figo. Dopo la visione di “Bones and All”, ammetto di essere partito leggermente prevenuto nei confronti di questa nuova pellicola, ma la sua visione è stata del tutto soddisfacente. Il trailer mi ha ingannato, perché ero convinto di trovarmi di fronte ad un semplice film con il classico triangolo amoroso tra belle facce che attirano il pubblico. È stato molto di più. Quello che ho maggiormente apprezzato riguarda la bella caratterizzazione dei tre personaggi e lo sviluppo delle loro relazioni: la protagonista della storia per me e l’amicizia tra Patrick e Art, mentre l’antagonista è il personaggio di Zendaya. Tutti e tre, nel corso del minutaggio, sviluppano dei tratti psicologici differenti, che lo spettatore riesce a riconoscere ed è stimolato a cercare di capire come proseguirà la storia. Il tennis gioca un ruolo molto importante, perché non è soltanto un semplice sport, ma è la chiave di volta che serve proprio a contraddistinguere ancora di più la psicologia dei protagonisti. Sembra quasi che quella partita, il suo esito, sia l’unica cosa che conti, ma l’adrenalina è innescata invece proprio dal fatto che non importa, alla fine, chi sia il vincitore, quello che importa davvero è essere liberi da qualsiasi manipolazione o restrizione. La regia è impeccabile, insieme ad un grandissimo montaggio, che organizza i vari vari salti temporali nella maniera giusta per proseguire nei risvolti successivi del racconto. Unita al montaggio, è una musica che mi è molto piaciuta, sicuramente non originale, ma in quel determinato contesto riesce ad aumentare ancora di più la tensione per lo spettatore. Insomma, un film maturo che si pone un obiettivo chiaro e che riesce a perseguirlo in maniera sicuramente non scontata. Luca Guadagnino è ormai diventato uno dei nostri registi che più gode di considerazioni ad Hollywood. Potremmo sicuramente non apprezzare tutti i suoi film, o contestarne i difetti, ma di questa cosa gliene va dato atto. È un bene, sia per lui, sia per il nostro cinema.

Cosa succederebbe se una relazione si basasse sulla più grande passione di un membro della coppia? Challengers ci racconta come la tennista Tashi Duncan, interpretata da una Zendaya in stato di grazia, basi il suo rapporto a tre solo sul "vedere del buon tennis". La ragazza non mostra mai di provare per i due ragazzi un vero sentimento di amore, anzi viene respinto, vuole soltanto sfogare la sua passione facendo da coach a entrambi. Se da un lato Art si dimostrerà accondiscendente, dall'altro Patrick preferirà non sottostare a lei. Viene così sollevata una riflessione su come a volte in una relazione ci si adegui all'altro/a, quando invece sarebbe meglio rimanere sè stessi, nonostante i propri difetti e con la consapevolezza di essi. Si parla dello sport come qualcosa capace di creare, distruggere e ricongiungere rapporti. Inoltre anche i meno avvezzi al tennis rimarranno catturati dalle partite. Guadagnino mette in gioco una regia molto dinamica, valorizzando gli sguardi e soprattutto le movenze dei personaggi, conferendo così un ottimo ritmo al racconto. La pellicola coinvolge dall'inizio alla fine, grazie anche a un montaggio clamoroso, che non rende mai confusionari i salti temporali, e una colonna sonora molto energica, per quanto un po' troppo sparata a tratti. Il finale l'ho trovato eccessivamente stirato, capisco la volontà di dare pathos, però potevano arrivare al punto prima, per i miei gusti.
