The Secret Book of Flora Lea 🌿 I absolutely loved this novel! It takes place during WW2 when the children of London were evacuated to the English countryside and then it follows up 20 years later. It’s a story about the bonds of sisterhood, the horrors of war, and the power of stories to comfort and change lives. It has references to Alice in Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Tolkien and the inspiration is visible throughout the book. There’s also a mystery to be solved that can go either way up until the end. This book has everything I like in a story, mystery, history, some romance, good storytelling, fairy tales, and the English countryside. 🌿🧚🏻

The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry and served with porridge and monkey bread . Hazel is working in a bookshop in London in 1960 when a package arrives. It is a children’s book with valuable illustrations by an American author. The thing is, the story is the exact story she told her 5 yr old sister in 1940 when they were evacuated for the war. Her sister disappeared that year but now the story is back. The story is told in the two timelines , 1940 and 1960 as Hazel tries to figure out how the story survived and if her sister did too. I enjoyed this one. A book about books is always a good thing. I liked Flora and I was curious where the story would go. I did think it dragged at times ( or maybe I was just trying to read when exhausted!) and it reminds me of The Library of Lost Things that I read last year. But still an enjoyable read . ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 There is a lot of porridge in the story. They eat it every morning. So, I made oatmeal with bananas and brown sugar. And what pairs nicely with oatmeal? Why cinnamon bread of course! I made monkey bread muffins. Which are pretty much muffins coated in brown sugar, butter and cinnamon. They are delicious! We’ve had crazy cool and gray weather here and this was perfect for a cold morning. Enjoy! #thesecretbookoffloralea #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #readingandeating #booksandfood #porridge

“Not very long ago and not very far away, there once was and still is an invisible place right here with us. And if you are born knowing, you will find your way through the woodlands to the shimmering doors that lead to the land made just and exactly for you.” The ultimate story package of historical fiction, fantasy, magic, mystery, family, friendship and love. #bookstagram #thesecretbookoffloralea

☀️MINI BOOK HAUL☀️ It’s a beautiful holiday weekend in the DC area! We took ourselves out to dinner last night as a treat and while my husband and daughter got ice cream, I headed over to @peoplesbooktakoma , which is celebrating its first anniversary this June and I’m embarrassed to say that I had never visited. However, the selection is fantastic and I’ll be sure to throw my support their way more often! I picked out THE SECRET BOOK OF FLORA LEA by Patti Callahan Henry and THE DEAD ROMANTICS by Ashely Poston. It was a complete #bookstagrammademedoit moment and I’m looking forward to adding them to my summer TBR! Title: The Secret Book of Flora Lea Author: Patti Callahan Henry Pub Date: April 2, 2024 (Paperback) ★★★★★ I read and absolutely LOVED this book. It was the perfect blend of historical fiction with mystery elements and I could not put this one down. I cannot recommend it enough and can’t wait to read more by this author! BOOK• DESCRIPTION In the war-torn London of 1939, fourteen-year-old Hazel and five-year-old Flora are evacuated to a rural village to escape the horrors of the Second World War. Living with the kind Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son, Harry, in a charming stone cottage along the River Thames, Hazel fills their days with walks and games to distract her young sister, including one that she creates for her sister and her sister alone—a fairy tale about a magical land, a secret place they can escape to that is all their own. But the unthinkable happens when young Flora suddenly vanishes while playing near the banks of the river. Shattered, Hazel blames herself for her sister’s disappearance, and she carries that guilt into adulthood as a private burden she feels she deserves. Twenty years later, Hazel is in London, ready to move on from her job at a cozy rare bookstore to a career at Sotheby’s. With a charming boyfriend and her elegantly timeworn Bloomsbury flat, Hazel’s future seems determined. But her tidy life is turned upside down when she unwraps a package containing an illustrated book called Whisperwood and the River of Stars. Hazel never told a soul about the imaginary world she created just for Flora. Could this book hold the secrets to Flora’s disappearance? Could it be a sign that her beloved sister is still alive after all these years? 💬QOTD: How are you spending your day today? Any reading or other fun plans?

The Secret Book of Flora Lea 4.5 ⭐️ This was such a beautiful story of a woman who lost her sister as a child and still yearns to find out what happened to her. Set in and after WWII, Hazel comes across a story that matches one she made up for her lost sister as a child. While she searches to find out if the sister is still alive, she reconnects with those she left behind after the traumatic incident. This book was beautifully written. The multiple timelines and voices were really well done. Definitely a solid historical fiction book!

It’s very unlike me to read two WWII books in the same month but here we are! I chose this book because I needed to make one more purchase to get free shipping from @bookoutlet (girl math) I didn’t love this book but I also just read The Nightingale so I think it just had big shoes to fill. The really important parts felt rushed whereas other elements were slow and could have been removed. “The Secret Book of Flora Lea” 📚 by Patti Callahan Henry (2024). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed this book, loaned to me by @murrayle. It’s a different kind of WWII novel - the horrors of the war in the background, two sisters are sent to live with strangers in the countryside to escape the expected bombings in London (yes, this was a real thing called Operation Pied Piper). Hazel, 14, creates a mystical place called Whisperwood, to distract Flora, aged 4. Their adventures turn to horror when Flora disappears, presumably drowned in the Thames River. In 1960, we see Hazel still obsessed with finding Flora. When a first edition book about Whisperwood shows up at the bookstore where Hazel works, the search intensifies. Henry does a superb job of connecting the events of both decades and deftly works in some of the unseen horrors of war. The romance is not too shabby, either, and is a backdrop to Hazel’s journey. #thesecretbookoffloralea @pattichenry #wwii #operationpiedpiper #england #fairytails #sisters #retiredlibrarian #readinglife #historicalfiction

The Pied Piper operation of WW2 had children evacuated from London and into the countryside for safety reasons. This book follows Hazel and Flora - two sisters who were evacuated. Flora goes missing. Later on, Hazel discovers a book about their secret world they created and the hunt for Flora begins again. Very interesting and good book. #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry #historicalfiction #worldwar2 #operationpiedpiper

~ Review ~ Patti Callahan Henry’s The Secret Book of Flora Lea ⭐️: 3.25/5 🗣️ I know I didn’t rate this book too high but I honestly did like it. My biggest thing was simply that it felt too long. There were parts of the book that really felt like they were dragging and it took me a long time to finish it, BUT I really liked the characters and the overall magical atmosphere it created. 💜 Read if you like a bit of mysticism and a book where you feel transported into the world of the characters ❎ Skip if you’re in a rush, this one took me a while to get through and could have been at least 50 pages shorter #books #bookstagram #readmorebooks #booklove #booknerd #bookworm #patticallahanhenry #thesecretbookoffloralea

✨Booksta Review Week Review #5✨ 📚: The Secret Book of Flora Lea - Patti Callahan Henry Genre: Historical fiction Swipe for synopsis ⭐️: 4/5 I texted my bestie while reading this one and told her I was struuuuuggggglinnnnggggg. 😂 It was a bookclub book though so I really wanted to try and finish it. It took a solid 30-40% before I found myself LOVING this one. It is one of the rare instances I am glad I pushed through and finished the story. Once I got to know the characters more I really loved the second half so much and was invested in figuring out what was the truth and what was going on!! I loved the whimsical side the fairy tale brought to the story. The author did a good job with the twist - I did not seeing it coming!! I also enjoyed the dual timelines and POVs!! Mondays after #indiebookstoreday, it’s hard to decide what to pick for #coffeeandcurrentlyreading! My 16-y/o daughter and I had so much fun visiting five independently owned bookstores in the Oklahoma City and surrounding small towns! I bought two books, my daughter picked two books and we received a free book with purchase! We took along her boyfriend to celebrate our favorite day and he also purchased two books. I think she’s turning him into a reader! The coffee cup is perfect for this Monday after a stormy weekend in Oklahoma. Fortunately, I only experienced a long power outage, so thank goodness for my Kindle! But, the weather was loud keeping me from good sleep as my dogs fear thunder. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of destruction across my state this weekend so people will need a lot more than coffee in the upcoming weeks. Coffee always helps though! #oncemorewithfeeling #allsystemsred #themurderbotdiariesseries #weyward #abookshopinberlin #thesecretbookoffloralea #bookstagram

#coffeeandcurrentlyreading or more like coffee and wish i was reading here😂🤭 The Secret Book of Flora Lee by Patti Callhan Henry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thanks to my book bestie @sondra.garcia for another great book! While this is a historical fiction it had a little but of everything mystery, romance, coming of age, sisterly bonds. My favorite qoute from the book: "To be waited for, what a wonder. Hazel thought, to have someone expectantly bide their time for her was absolutely glorious." QOTD: Do you look for quotes or highlight books? I never did until I started reviewing books, now I'm always looking for those profound thoughts! When a woman discovers a rare book that has connections to her past, long-held secrets about her missing sister and their childhood spent in the English countryside during World War II are revealed. #thesecretbookoffloralea #bookofthemonth #12recs12friends #wwii #historicalfiction

It's a historical fiction mystery fairytale ✨️ The Secret Book of Flora Lea// Patti Callahan Henry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 This book was recommended to me by an old coworker, and it was such a good read! I love historical fiction, and this was such an interesting take on a World War 2 era story. This story tells the story of 2 sisters, Hazel and Flora, who leave London during WW2 to the English countryside. To cope with being away from home, Hazel creates the story of a secret land only the 2 sisters know. One day, Flora disappears into a river, and Hazel carries the guilt of Flora's disappearance. 20 years later, a book about this secret land is found by Hazel, and she stumbles down a path of secrets about her past. Overall, it was a really good read, and it's one that I, too, will be recommending to others #bookstagrammer #bookreview #book #bookinstagram #historicalfiction #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry

Two sisters are sent by their mother from London to the British countryside during World War II so they will be safe. When the youngest, Flora Lea, disappears and is thought dead, older sister Hazel blames herself. Twenty years later, Hazel discovers a book containing stories she used to tell Flora when they were children. Could Flora be alive? Thus begins a search to find out what really happened to Flora. The book has some charming moments, and I enjoyed the setting. After the big reveal concerning Flora, you expect the book to quickly wrap up, but it continues, making it way too long. 3/5 stars #bookstagram #bookworm #audiobook #thesecretbookoffloralea

📚BOTM Backlog: One...of Many📚 Q: What BOTM book(s) have been on your backlist so long that you want to get to soon? More generally, what books on your TBR have been on there for a long time? (You can get to them soon, I know you can!) Am I still a member of #BOTM? Yep! Do I have way too many books on my TBR? Yep! Have I left every big blue box of happiness unopened since September? Yep! Whoops. I posted this on a story recently, to the incredulity of many of you, haha. I already had a BOTM backlog and knew that if I opened any more, I would get so daunted - so here's to making a dent in these as we continue through 2024! This is only one of many, starting with the oldest on my backlog ("The Good Left Undone," from April '22. Two years, aaah!) and continuing through about May '23 or so. There are plenty more, don't worry, and this also doesn't include any used books through BOTM from 2021 or previously. So, do you see any in this stack that I must prioritize? Any you've really enjoyed? Any that you wouldn't mind buddy-reading in May or June, perhaps? (I already have "Ghost Girl, Banana," "Zorrie," and who knows how many others on deck...thanks for putting up with me, everyone). Regarding other reading updates, my mom and I are buddy-reading "James" and enjoying it so far! (She was digesting Barbra Streisand's memoir for the first few months of '24 and gave it a solid 8/10). I also just started "Pachinko," another one that's been on my TBR forever. Though it is quiet and atmospheric, I devoured nearly 100 pages last night. Tender and elegant so far. And in the thriller category, I'm going through Kubica's "She's Not Sorry" (I liked her "Local Woman Missing" last year). That's all for now! Keep me updated on your reading life, and until next time, happy reading! 🌻Book Review 🌻 Set in WW2 England, Hazel and her younger sister, Flora, are sent to the countryside to avoid the catastrophes of the Blitz. Even though the girls desperately miss their mother, they find joy in the home of Bridie and Henry Aberdeen. Bridie is a loving mother to Henry and understands that Hazel and Flora need space and special care during their separation from their recently widowed mother. Several years older than Flora, Hazel delights her younger sister with magical tales of Whisperwood. And then, one day, Flora disappears along the Thames, which reshapes Hazel’s world. Hazel blames herself, turning away for only a moment when her sister disappears along the riverbank. Fast-forward twenty years, and a guilt-ridden Hazel works at a rare bookstore when she finds a book about Whisperwood. How could anyone possibly know the story other than her and Flora?? The story navigates between timelines to reveal what happened on that tragic day on the Thames and whether Flora survived. I loved the magic and mystery in The Secret Book of Flora Lea and how each puzzle piece is revealed, which had me guessing quite a bit. I recommend it to readers who enjoy stories about siblings and love. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 #bookrecommendations #bookreview #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry #historicalfiction #worldwar2 #booksaboutbooks #operationpiedpiper #mysterybooks #fantasybooks #booksofinstagram #booksofig #bookreader #bookreviewer #bookworms #bookworm #bookish #booknerd #booklover #bookcommunity #bookworld #reader #readersofinstagram #readersofig #readmorebooks #readmore #literature #bibliophile

"What a fairy tale is meant to do," she said, "if it's meant to do anything at all, Tolkien says, is give us new perspective on our world, the consolation of a happy ending. A recovery of sorts. Like we leave that world to see ours anew."⁣ ⁣ I had no idea that this was the same author as Once Upon a Wardrobe (which I read in 2022 and loved) but after learning this, it can absolutely see the similarities.⁣ ⁣ Summary ⁣ The story encompasses two sisters who are evacuated from London during the Blitz. The younger sister goes missing during that time and is never found. In 1960, while working at a rare books shop, the older sister discovers a children's book that mirrored a story she used to tell her sister. A story no one else knew.⁣ ⁣ Historical fiction + mystery = A home run. I loved every second of this book. I recommend not losing momentum with this one, it is a story that will completely immerse you in the best way possible.⁣ ⁣ Recommended format: I listened and read and would recommend both, I don't see a way not to enjoy this one.⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry #bookreview #historicalfiction #tonisbookreviews #readersofinstagram #ilovebooks #notjustaprettybook #dogsofinstagram

✒️ AUTHOR BACKLIST ✒️ Do you ever read a book and suddenly you need to read everything by that author? Do you try to go through their entire backlist or just stick with recent ones?  If I absolutely love a book I will definitely check out the backlist. I'd say about 8 out of 10 times I love the rest as well! Occasionally older books won't hit the same, or it's clear they're (for me) a one-hit wonder. But the rest of the time this is how I discover favorite authors and I love devouring everything they've written!  Here's a small selection of books I read in the last several months whose authors I knew I absolutely had to read more of. Some I already have or am working through their backlist (and loved.) Hopeful for the others! ☺️ QOTD: Who is an author you just had to read their backlist? #backlistbooks #authorbacklist #mustreadbooks #croatianbookstagrammer #literaturelover #fantasyfanatic #historicalfiction #historicalromance #ruthlessvows #rebeccaross #lovepractically #nicholevan #theladiesrewritetherules #suzanneallain #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry

And she finished her book club book w 20 minutes to spare! Are you in a book club? And if so, do you usually finish right before or days before?! For April we read, The Secret Book of Flora Lee. It was a story of heartbreak, love, loss, books, and a little bit of magic. It’s the story of two sisters, Hazel and Flora Lee, who have to evacuate London during Operation Pied Piper. During this time Flora Lee disappears never to be found again. Hazel blames herself since she should have been watching her little sister. Fast forward 20 years and Hazel is working in a bookshop where she finds a story about Whisperwood, a made up place that she use to tell her sister about to calm her. But the only people that knew about this place were her and Flora Lee. Does this mean that Flora Lee is alive?! Hazel embarked on a journey to find out what really happened to her sister, and to try to find the woman who wrote the story about the made-up land that no one else knew about. 4/5✨ #bookstagram #aprilbookclub #thesecretbookoffloralea #readmorebooks #californiabookstagram #fourstars #bookbooksbooks #hpsbookclub #girlswhoread #mustread

Hi everyone! I hope you all are doing well. I have finally finished The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry and it is definitely a contender for my top five favorite books of the year! It is beautifully written and lyrical. The mystery kept me hooked all the way to the end and even after I didn’t want it to end! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry @pattichenry “Telling stories is one of the greatest powers that we possess. It's like a dream you can fill with what you want. And the knight doesn't always have to save the princess; sometimes she saves herself.” If I could rate this book a million stars, I would! It has been sooo long since I’ve been transported away by a book and absolutely in love with a story. Henry pairs the destruction and horrors of war with the innocence and wild imagination of childhood. She masterfully captures an array of emotions including sorrow, love, and pain. This is a wonderful book and I’m truly said it’s over. #bookstagram #booksta #bookish #bibliophile #floralea #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry #worldwartwobooks #fiction #historicalfiction #whisperwood #fivestarread #bookpages #literature #magicalbooks

📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Don't let others take away good stories so they can feel better about themselves." "My God, they'd been carrying the same burden. The same bloody weight of guilt. They could have, she realized, been carrying it together all this time." "I don't want to be scared anymore, but I also don't want to do things because they are safe." What a stunningly beautiful and captivating read. I was held in its thrall from beginning to end and the hype is well deserved. It was intriguing and moving, heartbreaking and hopeful, unfolding with honesty and empathy all the while showing the power of stories and creativity in preserving truth, identity and healing. It's about loss and grief, healing and growth. Of childhood and adulthood. Of love - first love, familial love, friendship, and second chances. What we settle for in order to be "safe", and what happens when we let go and hope for more. It was written with such tenderness, honesty and beauty, I was absolutely captivated! #croatianbookstagrammer #literaturelover #bookishaesthetic #bookrecommendations #booksandcoffee #booksandteacups #historicalfiction #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry

🌳📖 Review: The Secret Book of Flora Lea 📖🌳 By Patti Callahan Henry The RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 The RECAP: London, 1939. The blitz has started in earnest, and in an effort to save the children of the city, the government of England launches the Pied Piper campaign, to shelter children with host families in the countryside. Fourteen-year-old Hazel and her young sister Flora live a charming, magical existence with Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son Harry…until one day when Flora vanishes while playing near the river. Twenty years later, Hazel unwraps an illustrated book called Whisperwood and the River of Stars, the magical land she created just for Flora. Hazel’s past becomes her present as she vows to find out if this book holds the truth about Flora and her disappearance. The REVIEW: I love the transporting nature of truly well-done historical fiction, and this book does just that. I knew very little about Operation Pied Piper, and learning about it from a child’s perspective was eye-opening. But The Secret Book of Flora Lea is about more than the history of 1940 and 1960. It is about sisterly and motherly love. It is about romantic love that transcends time and absence from one another. Above all, it is a story about the power of stories to heal and give hope to us all. I loved it. Patti Callahan Henry is a true storyteller, and her writing was beautiful. The narration of the audiobook was also excellent. The RECOMMENDATION: If you love historical fiction that transports you to another time and place, and if you love books about books, this one is a must read. ❓It is snowing here this morning. I think Mother Nature is confused. 😐 What is the weather where you are? #bookfluencer #bookreview #bookphotography #patticallahanhenry #bookofthemonth #historicalfiction #thesecretbookoffloralea #wwiifiction #mystery #romance #historicalfiction #momswhoread #explore #bookrecs #bookrecommendations #bossbabepresets

The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ————————————————————————————————————— Hazel’s sister goes missing and is presumed dead but the discovery of a new book gives her hope that she might still be alive. This was a sad but magical tale about grief, stories, and the way we live our lives. IT was very informative about Operation Pied Piper and its aftermath. The characters were all very likeable. I saw a lot of myself in Bridie. The author did a good job of keeping the mystery of what happened to Flora a secret. I was only 25% right in my prediction of what happened to her. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending. It didn’t quite seem genuine to the rest of the story. #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry #utsbmarchreads

The Secret Book of Flora Lea is a treasure: moving, surprising, & deeply evocative of an England that everyday walked the tightrope between heartbreak & hope. — @chrisbohjalian , #1 @nytimes bestselling author of The Lioness & The Flight Attendant “The Secret Book of Flora Lea is a beguiling blend of hope, mystery, & true familial love. It exposes the deep wounds of a family tragically separated because of war. Told in an utterly fresh way with dual timelines & a host of unforgettable characters, this is a story that is both necessary and satisfying through the last page. Powerful & spellbinding!” — @sadeqasays Sadeqa Johnson, @nytimes bestselling author of The House of Eve #thesecretbookoffloralea #patticallahanhenry #historicalfiction #ohenrymagazine #grandoverresort #lbtheloverofbooksauthorchat #sarahmccoy
